1 The Vicarage Bishopsteignton Dear Friends, Never mind the Muffin Man, do you know the Ice Saint . . . who lives down Crediton way? Blame Climate Change for throwing you off track if you didn’t connect ice with our local saint’s feast day of 5 th June. In the Middle Ages, when hard frosts persisted through till now (“Ne’er shed a clout till May is out.”), the Festival of the Ice Saints was celebrated to offset the gloom, and Boniface’s was the final day. But rather than ice, we’d do better to think of fire for him, as he challenged Thor, the god of the heathen tribes of Germany where he was a missionary, to strike him dead with a thunderbolt as he laid an axe to the sacred oak tree – and the rest is history! This year 5 th June is also the Sunday after the Ascension, and the Sunday before Pentecost – when we remember the Holy Spirit coming as tongues of flame on the disciples praying in the Upper Room, setting them on fire for their resurrected Lord, Jesus. As contemporary Devon Christians, may we be fired up this Whitsun and, in the week immediately following it especially, by the Holy Spirit and also by the successor to Boniface,: the present Bishop of Crediton, Bishop Bob, who is with us again in the Team, taking part in the evening series, “I will build my Church”. This Team Week of Faith Renewal will take place in St Michael’s and will be an opportunity for us all to fan, or rekindle, the flame that sparked our life of faith. With love, Stephen. I WILL BUILD MY CHURCH - a week of faith renewal The point of the week is the exploration of some of the building blocks of the Christian faith: Baptism, The Cross, Resurrection, Eucharist and Commission; and my hope and prayer is that we shall all be enthused afresh and have our understanding deepened. Each evening’s meeting will begin with worship at 7.30pm, though refreshments will be available from 7.00pm. In the context of worship our guest speakers will be giving us food for thought and food for the soul. Each evening there will be an opportunity to reflect on what we have heard. Please make a note of the dates: We begin on Monday 13th June and there will be a meeting each evening until and including Friday 17th June. The series of meetings, part of the programme for Bishop Bob on tour in the Kenn Deanery, will take place at St Michael the Archangel, Teignmouth – The Church by the Sea. All are most welcome! IDEFORD VILLAGE FETE

Saturday July 23rd 1pm - 4pm Ideford Millennium Green Thank you to those who have already offered to help with the fete this year. If you haven’t got round to it yet, please make that call now. We are still looking for help with the following: Teas Teas will be served in the village hall from 2pm until 4pm. It is planned to have a rota of helpers, so that no one has to be in the hall all afternoon. If you would be willing to go on the rota - please call Jane now - before you forget! Ice Cream If you are a ‘whizz’ with an ice cream scoop, please call Jane as she is looking for someone to run the ice cream and cold drink stall - a freezer is available. Draw Tickets If you would be happy to sell draw tickets on fete day please give Jane a call. This could be the job for you if you don’t want to be standing at a stall all afternoon as it can be done sitting down! Setting Up & Taking Down! Help will be needed on the Friday evening to set up the gazebos, and to take them down and ensure the Green is left clean and tidy after the event on Saturday afternoon. This is definitely a case of ‘the more, the merrier’ (or should that be ‘easier’!). General If you don’t feel you want to take on responsibility for a stall, why not offer to help someone else. It’s always good fun, a chance to meet new faces as well as making money to support our Village Church. If you’re a star in the kitchen and could make cakes or jam for sale on fete day, please give Jane a call. During the next few months we’ll be asking you for books, bric-a-brac, toys, bottles etc. The next fete planning meeting will be on Monday June 13th at 7.45pm at Home Orchard.

Please contact Jane with your offer of help on 01626 859571 or e-mail: [email protected]

Thank you!

Please Note: If stall holders want any requests or information to appear in the July newsletter, the deadline is Wednesday June 15th.

,IDEFORD MILLENNIUM GREEN During the last few months, dog faeces and debris from ripped up rubber balls has been found on the green. Up until now, people have respected the green and dog owners have taken rubbish home and used the dog waste bins. Not only is the rubbish and faeces unacceptable, but tragically has resulted in the death of a much loved pet dog. The dog swallowed some of the ball debris and unfortunately could not be saved. Please, if you see anyone leaving debris or not using the bins — remind them that the green is for everyone to enjoy. You might also like to inform the chair of Trustees, Anthony French. We would also like to extend our sincere condolences to Mrs Diana Forster on the loss of her dear companion Jo-Jo.
