The Vicarage Bishopsteignton Dear Friends, Is this piece of epic poetry familiar to you?

‘As I was coming down the stair I met a man who wasn’t there. He wasn’t there again today. I do so wish he’d go away!’

I only ask because, with Easter having been at the end of last month, for the first time that I can remember, Ascension Day is not in May: the day for remembering of Jesus not being there, isn’t here… It’ll be Thursday 2nd June 2011, in fact. Have you noticed that it’s always a Thursday? I can remember when it was a school holiday, and it still is in France… But in this month we have most of the 40 days (hence the Thursday) that passed between Jesus’ resurrection and his ascension, his ‘going up’ to reign in glory, as the culminating act of his work on earth. So, what was of such importance that he delayed his ‘coronation’ for 40 days after his resurrection from the dead on that Sunday morning that we call Easter? Well, you’d think perhaps putting in place a fool-proof plan for the effective development of his successful mission to bring back the rebellious human race into a right relationship with the creator God? And how did he do that? Strange as it may seem, by teaching the disciples – that mixed bunch of people, just like us, about how to live as citizens of his new Kingdom on earth: the living out of the prayer that he had taught them to pray. Not just equipped with his teaching though, but also with his Holy Spirit, given at Pentecost, 50 days after Easter (which often is in June…) For us now this can be every day of every month, as we are filled afresh with his Spirit to enable us as his disciples here to live our lives as citizens of his kingdom, and ambassadors of his reconciliation to the people around us. Jesus said to his doubtful disciples that it was good that he wasn’t going to be there, in one place, so that through his Spirit in his followers, he could be everywhere – including here ! Thank you for your generosity last year when you gave and raised £506 in all. It would be wonderful if we could raise more this year. 1,200,000,000 people live in extreme poverty not only with minimal money but without the life chances of education, decent work, adequate health care, personal security, or political freedom. They have no power to determine their own future. If you would like to get involved, please contact me on 854869, we are always glad of more collectors too. It is a very rewarding task when people give so readily. Envelopes will be coming out shortly so please put something in straight away and have them ready for your collector. Ollie Lucas MORNING PRAISE On Sunday May 29th at 10am please join us at St Mary’s for a Morning Praise Service. We hope that parishioners of all ages will come along and take part in this family friendly service, which hopefully will include hymns, readings, drama and music. THE LONG AND THE SHORT OF IT Years ago I found I could not resist the book: How to become ridiculously well-read in one evening. Edited by E O Parrott, and styled ‘a collection of literary encapsulations’, the idea of the book was to publish creatively - written brief summaries of the major works of fiction. The book itself claimed: “this superbly efficient book allows one to savour the wealth of great literature without the time-consuming tedium of having to read it”! It certainly did what it said on the cover as works such as Dylan Thomas’ Under Milk Wood were reduced to just eight lines of poetry, and major works by Shakespeare to just a page or so! If pushed, could you summarise the key elements of the Christian faith in five words? That is the promise of the I will build my Church our Week of Faith Renewal in June. Four guest speakers will tackle the essentials of our faith under just five headings – Baptism, Cross, Resurrection, Eucharist and Commission. Admittedly, we immediately need to pair these headings with a further word in order to begin to tease out meaning and significance. Thus our topics for the evenings of Monday 13th to Friday 17th June become:

Baptism and Grace (The Ven Penny Driver) Cross and Reconciliation (Canon Andrew Godsall) Resurrection and Healing (Bishop Bob Evens) Eucharist and Thanksgiving (Bishop Bob Evens) Commission and Outreach (Canon Anna Norman-Walker)

Our guest speakers will be helping us explore these major topics in the space of this one week, giving us the opportunity to go deeper into these essentials so that we can be encouraged and our faith revitalised. You may also like to think about those you know on the fringes of our church families who would benefit from a concentrated look at Christian basics and invite them along. The meetings will be at St Michael’s – The Church by the Sea. Simple refreshments will be available around 7.00pm, and each evening meeting will begin with a time of worship at 7.30 followed by input from the speaker and with a chance for us to respond in some way. Please try to make these evenings a priority in your plans for June! Ideford Music Festival 15th - 17th July 2011 There will be a series of music events held around the village from Friday 15th – Sunday 17th July. It starts with an evening of guitar music from Jason Carter on Friday and ends with another concert from the cellist, Orlando Jopling, on Sunday evening (hopefully as spell- binding as last year’s concert). On Saturday, there will be an informal evening of music covering a wide range of styles and we would really welcome local musicians’ contributions. Saturday July 23rd 1pm - 4pm on Ideford Millennium Green Plans are well under way for this year’s big event, but your help is still needed - the clue is in the heading - ‘Ideford Village Fete’ - a fete for the whole village. I know it seems a long way off yet, but as I sit writing this, it is only 13 weeks!! If you haven’t got round to offering your help yet, please look through the following list and then give Jane a ring. Teas Teas will be served in the village hall from 2pm until 4pm, and we are looking for someone to organise a rota of helpers so that no one has to be in the hall for the full two hours. If you are that person or if you would be willing to go on the rota - please call Jane now - before you forget! Ice Cream If you are a ‘whizz’ with an ice cream scoop, please call Jane as she is looking for someone to run the ice cream and cold drink stall - a freezer is available. Toy Stall A great one for a young family to take on - your children can have fun ‘testing’ the toys during the afternoon. Bottle Stall This always makes lots of money on fete day, so why not give it a go. If you’re not sure how to start - don’t worry, previous stall holders will give you some hints. Draw Tickets If you would be happy to sell draw tickets on fete day please give Jane a call. This could be the job for you if you don’t want to be standing at a stall all afternoon as it can be done sitting down! Setting Up & Taking Down! Help will be needed on the Friday evening to set up the gazebos, and to take them down and ensure the Green is left clean and tidy after the event on Saturday afternoon. This is definitely a case of ‘the more, the merrier’ (or should that be ‘easier’!). General If you don’t feel you want to take on responsibility for a stall, why not offer to help someone else. It’s always good fun, a chance to meet new faces as well as making money to support our Village Church. During the next few months we’ll be asking you for books, bric-a-brac, toys, bottles etc.
