STEWARDSHIP involves sharing talent. God has given each individual unique skills and talents so that together we can do the work of our Lord. Put your faith and love into action. Volunteer for things that interest you. Build lasting friendships and become part of the family of Saint Cecilia Parish. Check the directory just to the left or con-tact the parish office at 871-5757, ext. 202, and we can put you in touch with the people with whom you should chat.

Parish Lenten MissionI love the momentum our parishes have going, and Lent is the perfect time for all of us to focus on our spiritual growth. Every year we have this chance to look within ourselves. It is a time for reflection and penance.

Our annual Lenten mission offers an opportunity for reflection and repentance. This year, St. Cecilia Parish will be hosting the mission.

I am happy to announce that my good friend and brother priest Fr. Earl Fernandes will be leading our Lenten mission: Conversion, Repentance, and the God who is Love. The dates are Feb. 25-27 at 7 PM each evening.

Fr. Earl will be giving a very powerful talk each of the three nights of the mission. The first night, he will discuss the need for intellectual conversion and the pontificate of Pope Francis. The second night he will examine the need for personal conver-sion — fostering an authentic personal relationship with Jesus. The mission will conclude with the path to personal conversion leading to penance and reconciliation through the Church and the sacraments.

I would love for you to share this information with your family and friends. It is so important to give that personal invitation. If you know of anyone in your life right now who is seeking some need for a conversion, I ask that you tell them about our mission.

Amen? Amen!

Credo (I Believe)What is Catholic social teaching?

“Catholic social teaching is a central and essential element of our faith. Its roots are in the Hebrew prophets who announced God’s special love for the poor and called God’s people to a covenant of love and justice. It is a teaching founded on the life and words of Jesus Christ, who came ‘to bring glad tidings to the poor … liberty to captives … recovery of sight to the blind’ (Luke 4:18-19), and who identified himself with ‘the least of these,’ the hungry and stranger (cf. Matthew 25-45). Catholic social teaching is built on a commitment to the poor. This commitment arises from our experiences of Christ in the Eucharist.” – From Sharing Catholic Social Teaching: Challenges and Directions, www.usccb.org

A Gospel Reflection by Father Jason Williams

MARK 1:12-15

“Jesus was tempted by Satan, and the angels ministered to him.”

Only by reflecting on the meaning of Jesus’ temptations can we understand the reality of the mission he comes to fulfill. It seems odd that it is the Spirit that drove Jesus out into the desert. God wills that Jesus undergo this time of trial because his triumph over temptation now will give him strength to remain faithful even unto the Cross. Satan tempts Jesus in every way possible, yet Jesus refuses to give in to Satan. We believe that Jesus is fully human and fully divine, so in a real way Jesus fights Satan and is victorious over temptation in his humanity – in our humanity. This victory at the beginning of his public ministry foreshadows the definitive victory he will accomplish on the Cross and through the Resurrection, both of which also involve not only his divinity, but more importantly his humanity. Jesus came as man to save all, and if he weren’t truly man, then our humanity wouldn’t actually be redeemed. The way we can obey his call to repentance and faith in the Gospel – the way we can share in his work of salvation – is to let his divinity give life to our humanity. Figuring out how we can better let God do that is the great opportunity that the Church lovingly offers us each year during Lent.

CHILI COOK-OFF: Thanks to all of those who participated in this year’s chili cook-off hosted by St. Margaret-St. John (photo 1). It was a fun night with good food and a fun trivia game. 1 8TH-GRADE/STAFF VOLLEYBALL GAME: We ended Catholic Schools Week with our annual staff and 8th graders volleyball game (photos 2-3). The younger students cheered for the teams as the 8th graders teamed up with teachers and other staff members for a fun game during their last year. 1 THROAT BLESSING: We had a lot of people come on Sat-urday, the Feast of St. Blaise, as well as after the weekend Masses for throat blessings (photo 4). 1 CHURCH CLEANING. A big thank-you to parishioners Kaziah and Sarah Pearson (photo 5) for spending time cleaning our church. They were even willing to scrape gum off of the pews! For that service to the Church, they are assured innumer-able amounts of purgatory reduction time. 1 WELCOME, CHILD OF GOD: Welcome, Welles McGee, son of Patrick and Mary McGee (photo 6). Welles was baptized Feb. 4. 1 THE APOSTLES’ CREED: During Lent, we will use the Apostles’ Creed instead of the Nicene Creed at our Sunday Masses. The Apostles’ Creed may be used at any Sunday Mass, but the Church particularly recommends its use during Lent. Why? Because the words of this ancient Creed (photo 7) have been used for centuries as the basis of our baptismal promises, and the season of Lent puts a strong focus on baptism. During Lent we prepare those who will be baptized at Easter while readying ourselves to renew our own baptismal promises on Easter.

Fast and Abstinence Guidelines for LentPersons ages 18-59 are to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. When fasting, you are allowed one full meal a day. Two other light meals are permitted, but eating between meals is not permitted. Liquids are allowed at any time.

Persons ages 14 and up are to abstain from eating meat on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and all Fridays of Lent.

We have confessions every weekday at St. Cecilia following the 9 AM Mass. “Confession heals, confession justifies, confession grants pardon of sin, all hope consists in

confession; in confession there is a chance for mercy.” -St. Isidore of Seville

A fundraising dinner hosted by our 8th-grade class will take place on Thursday, March 1, at 6 PM in St. Cecilia Commons. Our faculty and staff have a terrific menu pre-pared for the evening.

The cost is $30 per person with proceeds from the night going to assist 8th graders with
