Dear members and friends of Northwoods STaR Ministries:
Advent/Christmas greetings to you all! This has been a year of change!
We started out the year as two two-congregation parishes and ended up the year as
one four congregation parish: “Northwoods STaR Ministries. Voters at the January/
February congregation meetings at First Lutheran Westboro, Ogema, Prentice, and
Zion Lutheran Brantwood voted overwhelmingly to join together as one parish while
also maintaining the individual identities of all four congregations. The Parish Council
made up of two members from each of the four congregations along with the new
parish secretary/treasurer Tracy Raab then spent the next few months putting togeth-
er the details of the new parish. Though there were some tense moments causing us
to delay the three needed votes that would officially get NSM going, on July 2 all four
congregations voted almost unanimously (only 1 total “nay” among all the congregations) to begin August 1.
On August 13 we had a joint service at Pioneer Park in Ogema at which we celebrated the ordination of 1st Oge-
ma member Sara Bishop, whom I had supervised as an intern at Püha Vaimu (Holy Spirit) Lutheran Church in Tal-
linn, Estonia 2016-17. Pastor Sara is now serving as Assistant Pastor there in Tallinn. Northwest Synod of Wisconsin
Bishop Rick Hoyme also installed Pastor Rick Hall as Lead Pastor of NSM, me as Associate
Pastor, and Luther Seminary student Quinlan Koch as Intern Pastor.
There were other joint services, too. On June 25 we had a great joint service at Lion’s
Park in Prentice hosted by 1st Prentice including a picnic. On July 16 we had a joint ser-
vice and picnic at Somo Lake hosted by Zion Brantwood.
And then on October 29 we celebrated the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation, 50
years of ordination by Pastor Michael Meier, and the joint Confirmation of this year’s con-
firmands from our congregations at 1st Ogema. 1st Ogema hosted the service and 1st
Prentice hosted the meal for Pastor Michael and Toni (at 1st Ogema). One bonus is we
had Bishop Rick Hoyme with us twice this year and also Bishop’s Assistant Greg Kauf-
mann!
From a ministry standpoint, the sad part of this year is the resignation of Lead Pastor Rick
Hall to accept a call to a congregation in North Dakota. It is with much sadness and a
variety of other feelings we bid him goodbye in October. But Bishop’s Assistant Greg
Kaufmann quickly found us an interim Pastor, Lowell Bolstad, who will be our Interim Lead
Pastor and lead us through whatever is reflection and planning is needed for as long as
needed until we of Northwoods STaR Ministries call and receive a new pastor (or pastors).
Vacation Bible School was a great success as usual. First Prentice hosted VBS in July with
counselors from Luther Park Bible Camp leading. First Ogema hosted VBS in August
adults and teens from the congregations leading. Though there was some talk about
having only one VBS in the future, I’m betting we will keep two because they offer different kinds of VBS and also
options for when to attend VBS. And, of course, children could choose to go to both.
This fall we began our eighth year of “University Style Confirmation.” At the moment our numbers of confirma-
tion age children are small, which makes it even more important that we’re doing it together.

CYF (Christian Youth Fellowship) at 1st Prentice is growing again thanks partially to
the presence of Intern Pastor Quinlan, who, along with a couple parents, accom-
panies interested students from school to church each Wednesday. For those of
you unfamiliar with this, CYF is sort of like Sunday School, only on Wednesdays.
With 4 congregations, there have been even more festivals and suppers, including
the first annual Summer Festival at Lion’s Park, the lasagna supper, fall suppers at
three congregations, and hunters’ suppers. All were well attended and delicious.
These offer food and fellowship to hundreds of people from our communities. They
also offer the opportunity for many people to volunteer their time and talents in giv-
ing, preparing, serving, etc.
I completed my service on the Synod Council and the Executive Committee of the Synod Council in May. One of
my goals is to continue to reduce my pastoral obligations until I am actually working only the 11-16 yours per week I
am currently called to work. That has been difficult this year because of first the lack of a local intern and then
Pastor Rick’s departure. But with the arrival of full time Interim Pastor Lowell in mid-November, I should now be able
to begin to work less and get the time off I am supposed to receive. My prime responsibilities will be supervising
Intern Pastor Quinlan, preaching and leading worship (but less), and other leadership activities as requested by
the Parish Council. Interim Pastor Lowell and Intern Pastor Quinlan will be doing the majority of pastoral ministry.
I also continue to participate in a support group called CARE, which meets in north suburban Chicago monthly
including two overnight retreats per year. I’ve been a part of this group since 1981. It’s a long way to go but more
than worth it. This group has kept me going in life and ministry with its listening and wisdom. This year with all the
ministry changes and personal changes, this group has been especially important to me.
It’s been an interesting year trying to learn how to actually work only part time after 36 years of working 60-70 hours
per week. But the way we arranged the year—with me gone in January and off May-July—has helped me actually
slow down.
Going backwards in time, in February Jo and I were able to attend and participate in the ordination of our 2015-16
intern Linda Strader in Jacksonville, Illinois. It was a great honor to be able to lead the worship for that service. Pas-
tor Linda is now the pastor of a newly formed three-point parish in Central Illinois. Just think, our ministry with her
helped prepare her for that! From the ordination we continued our journey down to Big Bend National Park, Texas,
for a couple weeks of hiking and relaxation.
Our daughter Rachel is in her second year at Luther Seminary studying to become a pastor. So far, she loves it. Our
congregations just keep helping send pastors into the greater church.
Personally, it’s been a trying year. Jo was diagnosed with breast cancer just before Christmas last year and has
spent the year up through October in treatment—chemo, surgery, radiation. To make things worse, the treatments
have made her heart less stable. But for the most part, since the radiation was completed in October, things are
looking up. No evidence of any cancer left at this point.
There’s more, of course—about our church experiences and our personal life—but I’m out of space. You can fol-
low our lives on Facebook or just ask. And, thank you for being part of our lives and our ministry together.
In Christ, Pastor Bob & Jo Giese

be available soon on line or on Facebook, or ask Pastor Bob or Jo for a copy.)

Dear Friends of the Northwest Synod of Wisconsin,
The year was 1986 and it was a beautiful December morning in our new home in Minnesota. We had recently
moved and I was preparing my Christmas Eve message for my new congregation. But I was having difficulty fo-
cusing on the task at hand. Each time I attempted to pen relevant and impressive thoughts, my eyes were di-
verted to a photo on my desk; a photo of a baby with thick dark hair and deep brown eyes. Although we had
never met, she had been named and she was loved.
Her name was Laura and Lutheran Social Services had assured us that she would soon be on a plane that
would fly her from Seoul, South Korea to the Minneapolis airport and then into our arms. But for now, she was in
a crib in an orphanage in a faraway land. And that made me sad…
I was sad because this little one would spend her first Christmas alone… or as alone as one can be in a room
filled with cribs. But she would not be held in the arms of loving parents and surrounded with gifts. And that was
sad. And it made me feel alone.
But I had a sermon to write… so back to the words in my Bible and back to the story they told.
“Immanuel” - God with us. This word is first written in the book of Isaiah and then again in the Gospel of Mat-
thew. Both times it is written as a promise that God will be with us, and God will never leave us. It is a promise
that a baby will one day be born and that baby will fulfill the promise of God’s presence with God’s people.
Oh my goodness…could this be true? Could God’s promise not be an ancient one, but one that was being ful-
filled, even as I attempted to write a message of hope to my new people? Is God really with us?
Her first Christmas; wrapped in cloths and lying in a hard bottomed crib in the center of a faraway orphanage.
And God is with her. God had knit her together in her mother’s womb, and God would never leave her. And her
name was Laura. And she was a child of God.
I remember this beautiful December morning often. I remember it when I am feeling alone. I remember it be-
cause I need to believe that God is with me. And that God will never leave me. And I believe it.
This will be my last Christmas message to you as your bishop. Next year at this time, you will read words from a
new bishop but the promise will not change. God is with you. His name is Immanuel and the promise is real.
Have a blessed Christmas and… go to church! God will be there!
Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel. Isaiah 7:14b
