From the Pastor’s Desk...

On this first Sunday of Advent, the first day of the new liturgical year, the reading is hardly comforting. It is, in fact, rather disturbing. Luke’s gospel paints for us the undoing of the order of creation. Cosmic forces are unleashed and the world of nature disintegrates. Amid the chaos, the Son of Man appears. Luke tells us to stand erect and raise our heads, for our redemption is at hand.

Although the tone of the reading seems dismal, a message of hope is nonetheless contained in this reading. Through the tribulations of world events, even those of today, our posture need not be that of fear or anxiety. We prepare for the birth of a Savior and the coming of the Son of Man as one who brings redemption. Remember, if you will, other scripture passages of similar tone. There we are reminded that we know neither the hour nor the day, so stay awake, sober, and alert for the appearance of our God.

Every generation seemingly believes that there never existed any such anxiety or misery as in the present day. The Christian is conscience-bound to remain hopeful, not pessimistic. There are unusually harsh voices proposing some pretty drastic and cruel measures to deal with the dilemmas we face today. We must not give in or sink to such a low level. When Jesus Christ comes, He brings light and hope, not darkness and despair. Let all people everywhere prepare to welcome the coming of our God!

Have a Good Week!

Fr. Bill Arnold

Thank You for Your Faithful Support! To all Holy Spirit Parishioners who donate so generously to the parish, many thanks. May God reward your generosity.

Please Remember in Your Prayers Shirley Vesco, age 86, a longtime member of Holy Spirit Parish, who died at home on November 21, 2018. The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated for her on Tuesday, November 27th, here at Holy Spirit, and burial followed at St. Joseph Cemetery. Shirley was a faithful and dedicated member of Holy Spirit. Please remember her husband, Carl, and her family in your prayers. Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her. May her soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

Pancake Breakfast! The whole parish is invited to a pancake breakfast TODAY Sunday, December 2nd, after

the 11:00 a.m. Mass. There is no charge for the breakfast, but a freewill contribution/offering will be accepted to help the parish provide a few Christmas needs for people who turn to us for help. The Pancake Guy from Kris Kakes will be flipping pancakes for us! Sausage, juice, coffee, and hot cocoa go with the breakfast. Come and enjoy!

Secret Santa Shop Opens Today, December 2nd, after the 11:00 am Mass, for the children of Holy Spirit School and Parish. This event enables the children to do their holiday shopping “on their own” under adult supervision and in the comfortable and safe environment of the church. Join us in the parish hall for our pancake breakfast and

shopping! It is a great opportunity to buy gifts for family and friends, and support the school.

Whitehall Community Kids Christmas: Again this year we are participating in the Whitehall Community Kids Christmas! The Giving Tree is adorned with many gift tags for 25 kids in our community. The gifts that we are fulfilling are mostly needs such as clothing and outerwear, but we are also given a list of toys they would like to open on Christmas morning, too! Please consider taking a tag or two the next few weeks to help support this wonderful holiday giving experience.

Additional Holy Spirit Information

Happy First Sunday of Advent! Holy Spirit School is preparing for the Lord’s coming throughout the month of December. We have begun our Annual Fund Drive and truly appreciate any

donation. Our Secret Santa Shop opens TODAY, Sunday, December 2nd and will remain open all week. Shopping hours are Sunday after 11:00 a.m. Mass and Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. Thank you for your continuous support and prayers. Amy Chessler, Principal

Tuesday, December 4 – Grief Support Group – 7:00 p.m. – Chapel

Please Come and Help Decorate Your Church! We need help to decorate the church for Christmas. On Monday, December 17th, we will begin “fl uffi ng” the Christmas trees. We will decorate after the 11:00 am Mass on December 23rd. We would appreciate any help you can give

on those days. Please call the Parish Offi ce at 614-861-1521 and talk to Pat if you are available to assist.

Volunteers Needed: The Advent Wreath will be blessed and the candles lit at each one of our weekend liturgies during Advent. We need families or groups of individuals to assist with this at Mass. Instructions will be given on the procedure.

Please look for the sign-up sheet in the welcome center.

RCIA Dinners Needed: Do you love to cook? Are you looking for a way to support our evangelization efforts? Each session of our RCIA program begins with dinner for the participants, their sponsors, and the

team members (approximately 10 people). Sessions are on Monday evenings and we need volunteers who can donate/prepare meals from Advent through Pentecost. This is a great way to meet our candidates and catechumens and welcome them to our parish. Please contact Mark Butler at 614-861-1521, ext. 12 for more information or to sign up.

Shared Parish EventsAdvent Video Series! Be one of the fi rst to see the new installment in Bishop Robert Barron’s Catholicism video series! Come join us for the premiere of the fi rst episode of Catholicism: The Pivotal Players, Volume 2, from 6:30-8:00 p.m., TONIGHT, Sunday,

December 2nd. This episode explores the life of “St. Augustine – The Teacher.” The video will be shown in the Holy Spirit Parish Offi ce and light refreshments will be served. Small group discussions will be held after the video presentation. For more information, please call 614-861-1521 or e-mail [email protected].

Additional St. Philip InformationSt. Vincent de Paul Society Collection: Our St. Vincent de

Paul Society is asking for your help. During the months of November and December, we will be collecting new, queen size blankets to give our Food Pantry clients, as we did last year. We also have had a special request for large diapers, sizes 5 and 6. There will be boxes at the side doors and a place in the vestibule where you can drop these items off. Once again, thank you in advance.

Mail Service Issues: Lately we have had some parishioners who did not receive their monthly envelopes. If you did not receive yours, please just place your contribution in a plain envelope with your name and address. They will be properly tabulated to your account. This can be especially worrisome as we come to the end of the tax year. All contributions received by December 31st will be applied to your account and will be refl ected in your year-end tax statement.

Holy Spirit St. Vincent de Paul News: The support from our parish for our Thanksgiving collection (white and orange envelopes) was overwhelming. We extend our heartfelt gratitude for the overfl owing generosity that was shown! We collected over $6,000.00! These funds were used to provide a wonderful Thanksgiving meal on the afternoon of November 17th in our parish hall. We provided approximately 200 meals (including those who dined with us, carried out, or had meals delivered). Additionally, the funds collected will help restock our food pantry and provide rent/utility assistance to our neighbors during the upcoming winter months. It is diffi cult to describe the gratitude shown on the faces of those whose lives are touched by your generosity!

Altar Servers, Eucharistic Ministers, Lectors: We need your help for the Vigil Mass of the Immaculate Conception on Friday, December 7th, at 7:00 p.m. If you can help, please email your availability to [email protected], or call 614-861-1521.

Christmas Flower Memorials: Christmas fl owers are placed in the sanctuary each year in memory of deceased family and friends. A minimum contribution of $15.00 is asked for up to three names. Envelopes are included in your packets or you may use the form below. Place your contribution in the weekly collection by December 10th. A list of names and donors will be published in the Christmas bulletin.

Support the Retirement Fund for Religious next week. The Church owes a great deal to members of religious orders who, for years, staffed our schools and parishes, and earned very little income for the task. They were selfl ess and dedicated. Now, in retirement, these religious orders face enormous costs for their retirement and medical expenses. Individual dioceses are not in the position to carry these expenses alone. Both of our parishes benefi ted from the work of the Sisters who staffed our schools and served as pastoral ministers. Please help “pay back” these dedicated people who built the Church in the United States. Envelopes are in your packets.
