Atthisjoyoustimeofyear,youareallbusycelebratingtheritualsortraditionsthatyouandyourfamilyhavesharedyearafteryear.Thesetraditionsarecomfortableandfestive. Maybeit’shangingafavoriteornamentontheChristmastree,orunpackinganheirloom,orenjoyingafavoriteholidaydessertpreparedfromthesamerecipethatwaspasseddownthroughthegenerations.Repeatingthesametreasuredtradi-tionsmakestheholidaysevenmoremeaningfulandbondsuswithfamilyandfriendswhosharethem. Sometimes,theholidaysgiveusthegiftofalittlebreathingroom—timetostepoutofourdailyroutinesandthinkofthebiggerpicture.Webegintoimaginenewadventuresfortheyearaheadandgearupmentallyfornewchallenges.Weareinspiredtosetnewgoalsandseekwaystostretchandstrengthenourabilities. ForallofusinvolvedintheJuniorLeagueofShreveport-Bossier,wefindourselvesatasimilarplacethisholidayseason:valuingourpastandlookingahead.WeupholdourtreasuredtraditionsandreaffirmthevaluesthathavemadetheJuniorLeagueanorganizationthathasmadealastingimpactontheShreveport-BossierCommunity.Atthesametime,we’realllookingaheadtotransformingandpositioningthisorganizationforabrightandstrongsecondeightyyears. Iwasborn,May4,1923(yesthatmakesme89yearsyoung),inShreveport,LAandhavelivedhereallmylifewithtwoexceptions:1.Atagenine,wemovedtoDallasforDaddy’sjobwiththerailroadindustry;butheHATEDitsowemovedbackinlessthanayear.2.WhenImar-ried,ImovedtohishometownofKeatchiewherewelivedthefarmlife.NowIresideinSouthHighlandswithmygrandson,hiswifeandchild. Myeducationbeganinaprivateschoolhere,onthecornerofHighlandandWyndotteStreet,calledPleasantHall.Thisschoolhaslongbeengone,justasMrs.Pleasantherself.A.C.SteerewasrightdownthestreetfrommyfamilyhomeonOckleyDrivewhichwasconvenientfortheremainderofmyelementaryyearsfromfourthgradegoing.MyfondestmemoriesofearlyeducationcomefromC.E.ByrdHighSchool;bothPollyandJustinfollowedthere.MycollegecareerbeganatCentenary,andthenIfinishedmydegreeinEnglishLiteraturewithaminorinTrigonometryatTulaneUniversityofLouisianaatH.SophieNewcombMemorialCollege. In1948ImarriedJohnYoungMorgan,anat-torneyfromKeatchie,Louisiana.Wewereblessedwithalovelydaughter,PollyDeckerMorgan,in1951.Johnpassedawayfromcancerin1960.PollyandImovedbacktoShreveportandlaterin1969Ire-marriedtoMiltonPopeBurkeIII.Sadly,hepassedawayin2003. PollyDeckerMorgan(1951-1992)gavemeapreciousgrandson,JustinCaldwellOwenin1980.JustinmarriedEllaVoriesBridges(theassistanteditoroftheParishscopethisyear)fiveyearsagoandtheynowhaveatwo-and-a-halfyearoldson(mygreat-grandson),Shepherd‘Shep’CaldwellOwen.Shepwasnamedaftermysweetdaddy,Samuel‘Sam’ShepherdCaldwell.Iamsothank-fultohavetheminmylife. YouaskedifIwouldliketoseemyfamily,specificallymygranddaughter-in-law,continuetoservethecommunitythroughtheLeagueorotherways.I’mveryproudofmygranddaughter-in-lawforherinvolvementintheJuniorLeagueand

thecommunity,butfranklyIdon’tcarewhatshechooses.Whatevershewantstodo,that’snotmybusiness. Isupposemostpeopledon’tknowmypassionfordogs.I’vealwayshadadog.WhenIlivedinKeatchie,peoplewouldjustdropdogsoffinthecountry(cruel),soIatonetimehadNINEdogs.MybeloveddogPedroisaChiweenie.Hewasal-readynamedwhenIadoptedhimfromtheCaddoAnimalShelter.Mybiggestpetpeevewouldhavetobepeoplewhodon’tlikedogs. Whataremyhobbies/interests?Television!Ilovetelevision...anyandallshows.IrememberlovingtheradiobeforewehadTVs.DuringmyactiveJuniorLeaguedays,myfavoritehobbiesincludedgoingtoTheStrandanytimethedoorswereopen!MyfavoritemovieofalltimeisGone With The Wind.“Franklymydarling...”ClarkGablewasthebestlookingthing! Mydaddy,SamS.Caldwell,wasthemostinfluentialpersoninmylife;heenforcedinmeto“alwaysspeakthetruthevenifithurt.”HewasmayorofShreveportforthreeconsecutiveterms,1934-1946.Hewasknownforhishonesty.HecampaignedagainstJimmyDavisduringthe1944Louisianagovernor’srace.IhatedpoliticssimplybecauseIdidn’tlikeany-onetosayanythingbadaboutmydaddy.

Duringmyhighschoolyears,myfavoritewaytospendmydayswereworkingasmydaddy’ssecretaryafewdaysaweekwhilehewasmayor.TheoldCityHallisnolongerthere.Mostofyouprobablyaren’tevenawaretherewasan“Old”CityHall.ItisnowanemptyparkinglotdownthewayfromTheStrand. IjoinedtheLeagueintheearly1940sandthe“placement”(thoughIdon’trememberthembeingcalledthat)I’mmostfondofwasbeingachauffeur.Backthenagreatdealofpeopledidn’townacarandiftheydidgaswasrationed,duetothewar,somyfamilyhavingacar(ortwo)andwithDaddybeingmayor(somehowthatmeanthewasallowedmoregasoline?)myjobwastohelpthecommunityintakingpeoplewheretheyneeded.Examplesincludethegrocerystore,hardwarestore,etc. IhavenoticedadefinitechangeinthediversityoftheLeagueinthesepast80years,butmymostfa-voritepartoftheJuniorLeague’s80yearsinShreve-port-Bossieristhatwearesteadyinourmissiontopromotewomeninthecommunity.It’sbeensuchanhonortobepartoftheJuniorLeagueShreveport-Bossierforthepast70+yearsthatIwasevenaskedtobeamember.MyhopefortheLeagueisanother80wonderfulyearsgivingtoourcommunityinwayswedon’tevenforeseeasaneedyet.

JLSBhasastrategicgoalto“bealeadingforceinthebettermentofourcommunity,primarilythroughprojectsthatenhancethelivesofwomenandchil-dren.”ThenewJLSBDomesticViolenceEducationplacementencompassesthespiritofthisstrategicgoalinaconcreteandpowerfulway. Domesticviolenceisasilentepidemicthatim-pactseverydemographicofthiscommunity.Weallknowthatdomesticviolenceisdevastatingtothewomenwhoarethevictims,butitisequallydetrimentaltotheirchildren.Childrenwhowitnessdomesticviolenceexperiencedif-ficultiesintheirdevel-opment.Worseyet,theyoftencarrywiththemahorriblelessontaughttothembytheabuserintheirfamily:thatitisnormaltousecoercivepowerandviolenceasawaytoinfluencetheonesyoulove.*Thisperpetuatesthecycleofviolencebecausestatisticsshowthatboyswhowitnessdomesticviolencearetwiceaslikelytorepeatthebehaviorwiththeirowndomesticpartner.Thiscyclemuststop. JLSBhaspartneredwiththeProvidenceHousetobealeadingforceineducatingourcommunityaboutthewiderangeofservicesofferedtoassistvictimsof

domesticviolence.TheProvidenceHouseprovidesasafeandsecureemergencysheltertowomenwhofleetheirabusivepartners.Whileatthesafehousewomenhaveaccesstocounselingservices,jobandhousingassistanceandlegaladvocacy.However,theProvidenceHouse’smissiontoenddomesticviolenceextendsbeyondthewallsofthesafehouse.Staffis

availabletoassistvictimsindevelopinganindi-vidualized“safetyplan”toimplementwhentheyareleavingtheirabusivespouseorpartner.Theyalsoofferassistanceinfilingtemporaryrestrain-ingorders.JLSBmemberswillhosteducationalmeetingsthroughoutourcommunitytogetthewordoutaboutthewiderangeofservicesofferedbytheProvidenceHouse.Wecurrentlyhaveplans

topresenteducationalworkshopstochurches,profes-sionalorganizationsandcommunitygroups.
