In 2014, the Municipality of Santiago with the support of the “Piedra Viva” Foundation launched a landscape and architectural competition for the design of the park of San Borja, in Santiago. The new urban space, meant to become a new cultural attraction and important public space for the city, would host a pavilion and a permanent exhibition of 238 works of art created by the national sculptor Mario Irarrázabal Covarrubias.

The winning project proposes to expand the boundaries of the San Borja Museum space

connecting it to a series of preexisting highlights in the neighborhood. Continuity of pavements, sidewalks, and vegetation connect several open spaces generating a new continuous interstitial park.

Dismissed areas and preexist-ing facilities are also included in the path, creating a system that, outlining a gastronomic walk and recreational activi-ties, contributes to the revital-ization of the neighborhood. In the same way in which the new path stretches across the neighborhood, incorporating activities and open spaces

outside the boundaries of the park, the design of the new museum park itself is meant to be permeable to the city, al-lowing access from each street and encouraging crossing through the park’s paths.
