Inmany parts of North America, thenative people relate the cycles ofthe moon (called GrandmotherMoon by many Native Americans)to those seasons. In every year, there are thirteen of those eightdays from one new moon to thenext.
Many Native American peoplelook at the turtle’s back as a sort ofcalendar, with its pattern of thir-teen large scales standing for thethirteen moons in each year, andtwenty-eight smaller scales stand-ing for the twenty-eight daysbetween each new moon. Itreminds them that all things areconnected and that they must try tolive in balance.

Document 5The Peach Pit Game
A favorite game played at the GreenCorn Festival is the Peach Pit Game. The rules of the game are simple. Sixpeach pits are painted with a color onone side. The pits are placed in a wood-en bowl. The player raps the bowlsharply on the ground, and the pitsbounce. Points are scored on how manypits turn up the same color.
The game may go on for days beforethere is a winner. People place bets onwho the winner will be. Clans oftencompete with each other.
This game reminds the people thatmaterial wealth is not important. Playersbet with a favorite possession, such as aribbon shirt or a turtle rattle. If this islost to the other player, the belief is thatthe item will be waiting for the person inthe “next world.”
