welcomef rom the President

Dear Friends,

The MHA Fall Convention & Trade Show provides health care leaders unparalleled professional and personal development. Bring a colleague and gain valuable insights from top performers on best practices and strategies for advancing a culture of health in Montana.

“People, Passion and Performance” is the motivating theme for this year’s high quality educational and networking event. Attendees will learn how to advance their personal and professional goals, turn inspiration into new

thoughts and ideas and engage with their peers to tackle key challenges affecting health services and outcomes across the state.

Don’t miss this opportunity to boost your capacity to create an impact and more efficiently respond to the needs of your organization and community.

Also, we have fun. The MHA Convention is Montana’s largest gathering of health care professionals. The premier event attracts hundreds of your colleagues alongside national and international speakers, performers, industry experts and potential business partners. The MHA Trade Show is the largest of its kind in MT, showcasing cost-effective and visionary products, technologies and solutions designed for forward-thinking providers of outstanding patient care.

This year’s keynote will captivate your attention and leave you equipped to tackle a variety of challenges. Ben Nemtin is a #1 New York Times best-selling author and the star of MTV’s The Buried Life. Fed up with the monotony of day-to-day life in college, Ben and his friends set out on a two-week road trip with a camera and a borrowed RV to complete a list of “100 things to do before you die.” For each item they accomplished on their list, they helped a stranger cross something off his/her own list. Over the years, Ben and his friends have crossed off nearly every item on their list, and have encouraged millions of others to believe that anything is possible.

Can he convince you? Join us in Billings to find out.

Dick Brown // President/CEO

Ben Nemtin Ben Nemtin is the #1 New York Times bestselling author of What Do You Want To Do Before You Die, the star of the MTV show The Buried Life and an internationally renowned keynote speaker. As the co-founder of The Buried Life movement, Ben’s message of radical possibility has been featured in major media including The Today Show, The Oprah Winfrey Show, CNN, FOX, ABC, CBS, NBC News, and more. Oprah Winfrey called Ben’s life work “truly inspiring.”

In university, Ben was hit with a crippling depression that forced him to drop out of school and retreat into his parent’s house. He felt buried by school, by work, and his own mind. In an attempt to feel more alive he made a list of ‘100 things to do before you die’ with his three friends. They decided that for every bucket item they accomplished, they

would help a complete stranger accomplish something on their list.

They called their mission The Buried Life, after a poem which articulated their feelings perfectly - they felt buried. The foursome borrowed an RV, bought a second-hand camera so they could film the journey and hit the road for two weeks one summer to tackle their list. What happened next was a mix of luck and magic. People started to hear about their quest and wanted to help. Total strangers stepped up to assist them with their bucket list and others reached out asking for help with their biggest dreams.

That two-week road trip started a movement that fueled Ben and his friends to continue to check things off their bucket list and help others for the next decade. Ben has learned that by doing what you love, you inspire others to do what they love.

Ben Nemtin has shown audiences from 200 to 20,000 how to dream bigger, achieve more and energizes them to unbury the life they want. Ben delivers a high-octane message that motivates people to shake off mediocrity, live up to their greatness and give back to others.

THe BoNUS SeSSIoN:A year from today, will you be a better leader… or not? The answer affects every aspect of our lives. Who are you BECOMING? introduces four pillars the greatest leaders all have in common and a simple formula for enhancing these pillars in your own life and organization. A favorite of audiences across the country, Jonathan shares “The Simplest and Most Effective Leadership Development Plan,” borrowing powerful and practical lessons from the greatest people developers in all walks of life. What is the greatest leadership advice ever given to a U.S. president? What success formula do world-class 7th grade teachers and Viktor Frankl have in common?

Jonathan will also introduce the core elements of Emotional Intelligence, which are key to developing effective relationships both personally and professionally. This program is full of incredibly memorable stories, real-life scenarios, and a four-part process to take your EQ to the next level. This program applies to you, whether you lead a company, non-profit, team, family, or just yourself. CNE NHA CPHQ

THe oBjecTIVeS:1. Learn and begin to apply the “Simplest and Most Effective Leadership Development Plan” for yourself, your family, your clients, and your team.2. Practice the simple formula that guides emotional responses and allows us to dramatically influence the emotional state of ones self and others.

THe PReSeNTeR:Jonathan Fanning is the author of Who are you BECOMING? and has been coaching leaders – from Fortune 500 executives to sole proprietors – for over 15 years. If you are familiar with TED talks, Jonathan was voted the best speaker at a recent TED conference. A traumatic car accident and several other “Frying Pan” moments in the middle of Fanning’s career as a management consultant to Fortune 500 companies triggered a quest for a deeper sense of purpose, meaning, and significance. “Who are you BECOMING?” and “Who are you helping others to BECOME?” became central to Jonathan’s life, businesses, and speaking. He has also built several successful

businesses, including a national children’s fitness franchise and Entrepreneur Adventure, which helps young people experience business start-up and ownership. He has inspired and challenged audiences with his message in 49 states and on 3 continents.

This session will address 3 topics of national focus that demand compliance with evidence-based guidelines: hand hygiene (HH), antimicrobial stewardship (AMS), and sepsis. HH is widely known to be the most important intervention to prevent healthcare acquired infections (HAIs), yet compliance nationally remains low. Recent CDC data shows that only about 40% of acute care facilities have formal AMS programs in place. Sepsis awareness has been a national initiative since the mid-2000s but sepsis continues to be the #1 cause of readmissions, the most expensive condition treated in U.S. hospitals, and has a mortality rate 8 times higher than any other diagnosis when diagnosed during an inpatient admission. In this session we will discuss what an effective team looks like, review evidence-based strategies to drive compliance, and provide tools to aid in developing formal HH, AMS, and sepsis programs at your facilities with the goal of providing safer patient care, reducing mortality, and driving improved patient outcomes. This session explores the integrative healing benefits of utilizing animals in health care settings. CNE NHA

B7 - ImPlemeNTINg TRAUmA INFoRmeD cARe PRAcTIceS - PART 1John Richardson-Lauve, ChildSaversTrauma has an impact on lives long after the event has occurred. From the Adverse Childhood Experiences Study (ACEs), we have learned how the high prevalence of childhood trauma affects health outcomes across the lifespan. If we learn the signs and symptoms of trauma and effective ways to mitigate it, we can have a greater impact as health professionals. One of the first steps in this solution is assuring a “trauma informed” foundation for all staff in a healthcare system. In a comprehensive approach, anyone touching the life of a person who may have been touched by trauma needs to understand the basic principles of the impact of trauma and the hope of building individual and community resilience. Participants will learn resilience-building strategies to support post-traumatic growth and will be able to identify at least two interventions they can utilize in the course of their work. CNE NHA

Clinicians and hospital staff face devastating impacts from being involved with medical errors, especially in organizations without support systems in place. Moreover, only 64% of staff who responded to the 2016 Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture’s hospital comparative database felt that reported mistakes led to positive changes. To help healthcare leaders achieve total system safety across the continuum, ACHE and the Institute for Healthcare Improvement/ National Patient Safety Foundation Lucian Leape Institute developed a guide for “Leading a Culture of Safety: A Blueprint for Success.” This Blueprint is designed to help leaders shape, create and sustain the organizational culture needed to ensure patient and workforce safety and inspire healthcare leaders on the journey to zero harm. The challenge for healthcare organizations post EHR implementation is setting the data foundation necessary to move into the world of value-based, consumer driven care. A proper data foundation sets the stage to close the “data to information gap” by properly integrating, enriching, harmonizing data and ensuring its quality. In this presentation, Shawn will share key strategies that can accelerate getting any organization’s data house in order to prepare for the future of analytics. As working professionals, we could all use a little jolt from time to time. This session may be the only time all year when you take a moment to reflect on the things you need to do to reignite the passion that brought you into the workforce in the first place. World-touring entertainer and actor Mark J. Lindquist offers a keynote that is as entertaining as it is enlightening as he sends you out the door on fire.

Participants will gain an awareness of the mental roadblocks that stand in the way of progress; this progress can be in our personal lives, the workplace, or in the pursuit of our passions.

Audience members will gain an understanding of the importance of a workplace culture that is dedicated to the development of an individual’s strengths. The quickest way to reignite a person’s passion for what they do is to develop a culture that honors the strengths of the individual and allows them to make major contributions to the organization within their strength zone.

Members of your team will leave with an expanded vision for their future within your organization. Many of us feel “stuck” from time to time as we progress through our working lives. Whether it is your first week on the job or you are a CEO of the organization, individuals will leave this session with a new vision for the future that will propel them out of the rut and into an exciting journey toward a passion-filled life in all areas, at work and at home.

More importantly though, improved outcomes help patients remain at home as an active participant of the family, community and world at large. By understanding outcomes and identifying how best to monitor and utilize the information, agencies will enhance their value to patients, families and health care partners.CNE

F6 - RURAl PHYSIcIAN RecRUITmeNT AND ReTeNTIoN PlAYBookSharon Thompson, Jackson Physician Delivering on the promise of a rewarding practice and balanced lifestyle for physicians and advanced practice providers can seem like an insurmountable challenge. Learn how to develop effective recruitment practices -- and create the culture -- that focus on taking care of the provider, freeing them to take care of their patients. This session will explore actionable tactics that support physicians in their rural practices, and in turn, increase the success of recruiting new doctors and families to their communities and maintain their own well-being in remote, rural locations. Interactive learning will keep participants engaged in identifying what they can take home to address their most pressing challenges. CNE

F7 - mANAgINg woRkPlAce coNFlIcTTim Bleigh, Spacelabs HealthcareThis course covers the essential communication tools that will enable anyone to recognize, defuse and minimize conflict in the workplace. It starts with developing an understanding of the causes of conflict and the reasons that we react and behave the way we do. We then define the emotional intelligence and responses that will prevent conflict from escalating and strategies for mitigating further conflict and stress. CNE NHA

F9 - mISSIoN: HPV cANceR FRee - BRINgINg THe U.S. UP To SPeeD!American Cancer SocietyMission: HPV Cancer Free campaign has two goals: 1) Increase HPV vaccination rates for preteens, and 2) Eliminate gender disparities and reduce geographic disparities in HPV vaccination rates. The United States lags behind other developed countries in protecting our children against HPV cancers. No one should face a diagnosis of cancer that could be prevented. If we vaccinated all of our 11-to-12-year-olds, we could see a generation of HPV cancer-free adults. The presentation will focus on implementing key interventions and strategies to raise HPV vaccination rates. Health systems can reduce future suffering, lower costs associated with treatment, and ultimately help save patients’ lives. CNE NHA

F10 - PReVeNTINg INVolUNTARY DIScHARgeS FRom SNFS AND AlFS LaDawn Whiteside, I-MediateMediation is an innovative approach to resolve conflict as an alternative to complaint investigations, fair hearings and litigation. Mediation is used to: Prevent resident discharges, decrease the number of discharge appeals, meet current state/federal requirements for discharge planning and arbitration, decrease the number of complaints filed with the state agency, and enhance customer service. The new interpretations and regulations change the risk management of a nursing facility regarding discharge. Typically, a discharge notice is issued when the facility has run out of solutions and/or fears survey repercussions. Mediation can be used as an informal method of working together to create a solution, which helps everyone involved. CNE NHA
