Greetings to you all, dear friends. We have actually been out here for almost 3

months, and here in south western Uganda, in

Kabale, for almost 9 weeks. Life is certainly

quite different to home! Cooking is a limitedexperience, on two gas rings, but these two

gas rings are a real blessing! The laundry is a

challenge, to coin a common phrase used

here! No washing machine in sight, - only 3

large plastic bowls! And plenty of muscle

    power!

The bathroom is wonderful though - all mod

cons in there, but the shower is less of a

shower and more of a dribble! So shower

routines, and hair washing is all akimbo! In

fact Jane has taken to washing her hair in one

of the afore mentioned plastic bowls, as this is

somewhat more successful! But the bliss of

having a proper flushing toilet cannot be

    highlighted enough!

Almost daily power-cuts and the occasional

    water-cut provide their own frustrations.

We brought out with us a little clip-on readinglight each, in preparation for the lack of

electricity. The fun that we have had with

finding the most enterprising place to clip

them on has been quite a laugh! The best

The house where we are staying is right in the

middle of Kabale, and life here is certainly not

quiet. It is very colourful, very noisy, many

motor-bike taxis and even more push-biketaxis.

We are getting to grips with a new spirit of

boldness! We certainly need it here, in our daily

encounters. There are two price systems here

in Kabale - the Kabale price and the mzungu

    (white-man) price, where everything doubles.

So, going in strong with what we know to be

the actual price is the new norm! And to be fair,

when the market trader, petrol cashier orwhomever else, realises that we know, they

give in and enjoy a giggle about it!

Some wonderful news that we have is thatwe visited Justina, the lady who we raisedthe money for her land and her own house. What we found when we arrived wasnothing short of a miracle! The house iscompleted apart from the mud floor, butmore amazing was what surrounded thehouse - an acre of fully grown vegetablecrops, young banana trees, her goat with

twin kids and her chickens havingmultiplied. We were so taken back, andeven more so when Justina greeted us,and just cried and cried as she hugged us,and she praised God, her Jesus who hasbeen so faithful to her and answered hercries for help. Just this week we haveheard that she now holds prayer meetings at her home, and that recently she had a group of 10there for a whole weekend in fellowship and prayer, and that she said that it really was ok becauseshe has the food to feed them with from her garden! Amazing!

    Some wonderfulnews...

The roads are something else down here. More

pothole than road in a lot of cases. Each

journey is an adventure - potholes, major

roadworks, crazy African drivers and roaming

animals. No two journeys are ever the same!

We seem to have made friends with the flag

ladies, who are the Ugandan equivalent to

roadwork traffic lights, and in fact one of these

ladies almost caused an accident when she

waved her green flag at us to greet us, and the

lorry in the incoming traffic thought that she

was signalling for him to move! Oops!

No two journeys are ever the same!

As you know, we came out to Uganda withWorldshine Ministries, and have been acrossthe the school in Rwentobo a number of times. In our weeks of being here, and during thosevisits, we really began to feel that we were notin the right place. To say we have had sometough times is not an overstatement. It hasbeen hard. We have both really felt like packingour cases and coming home a number of times - well, to be honest there isn't too much topack, as a lot of our stuff is still in suitcases aswe haven't bought the furniture to unpack in to.

But, joking aside, it has been hard. And threeweeks ago we reached the point where wewere so close to making the decision to giving

up and coming home. But God wasn't havingany of it. In His timing, He chose that momentto begin to make some very clear revelations tous about the work He has in store. And,through a week of turnabout we were remindedof our original calling to serve the poor and theneedy, to reach the lost.

We were led to a young man here called Didas, who has a small project on the shore of LakeBunyonyi, and through a visit to

his project weheard about thepeople who liveon the far side ofthe lake and wefelt incrediblydrawn to visitthem. So we did,and found a veryvery poor people, living almost in isolation; a people that time hasforgot, a lost community.

They live in one of the most beautiful placesthat we have ever seen, but the contrast of thesurrounding beauty with the starkness of theirpoverty is just so hard to see! We met people

that are the poorest we have met yet inUganda. One

family of 6 (3 oftheir childrenhave alreadydied) live in twotiny rooms, allsharing onesingle woodenbed frame withno mattress, noblanket, just ragsas a cover, and

had nothing else to speak of. There are manyothers like them. And so we have a new workto do!

We hope to remain a small part of theWorldshine school at Rwentobo; howeveralongside this we aim to set up the ButengaCommunity Project, with the hope to help thesepeople to help themselves to help theircommunity. More next time...
