Stacking the deckWith the help of Deere machines, Trex® recycles billions

of plastic grocery bags into decking products

CORRECTION

On page 5 of our May 2013 issue, we included a caption about how John Deere

K-Series Dozers and G-Series Motor Graders can be ordered from the factory with

an expertly installed Topcon grade-control system. Unfortunately, the accompa-

nying crawler photo depicted a different grade-control system. While John Deere

crawlers and graders can still be ordered grade-control ready to accept the system

of your choice, we intended this photo to show a Topcon system. We regret the error.

K-Series Dozers and G-Series Graders are available with the Topcon inte-grated grade-control option so they’ll roll off the dealership trailer with a 3D-MC2 grade-control system ready to go to work for you.

ne billion pounds of plastic bags, wraps, and film were recycled in the U.S. in 2011. That’s a 55-percent increase since 2005.

A primary market for this material is the composite-lumber industry. We recently paid a visit to Trex Company’s mate-rials-processing center in Winchester, Virginia. The company is the country’s largest manufacturer of wood-alternative decking, railing, and fencing products.

Each year Trex turns millions of pounds of recycled and reclaimed plastic and waste wood into their products. Each year the company purchases 300 million pounds of polyethylene and an equal amount of waste wood — material that would have been dumped in a landfill.

A better product is in the bagTrex recycles approximately 1.3 billion plastic grocery bags annually. Stack after stack of the bags and other polyethylene

film fill the floor of the cavernous recy-cling plant, creating a psychedelic-colored maze. Like the ’60s film said: Plastics.

The facility is a constant blur of activity as forklifts move bales of materials around, eventually bringing them to a sorting operation, where a John Deere 135D Excavator opens them and fluffs the materials so they are easy to sort. It then loads the material onto conveyor belts, where it is hand-sorted. Non-polyethylene material is removed before the remainder is processed into plastic pellets, which are used in the manufacture of the composite deck boards.

The recycled plastic is mixed with recycled wood to make a product that is 95-percent recycled. “There’s a synergistic relationship

It’s in the bag. Darren Garrison and his team process 300 million tons of polyethylene each year with the help of a John Deere excavator.

between the plastic and wood — one protects the other,” says Darren Garri-son, materials processing manager. “The result is a high-end product that looks good and lasts a long time.

“I’m pretty proud of the fact that we recycle hundreds of millions of pounds of materials that would otherwise go into a landfill. People have this preconception of recycled products as somehow inferior — if you have recycled paper, it’s not as white. But Trex manufactures a premium product that’s better than most decking products. That’s pretty neat.”

Putting more productivity

within reachThe John Deere 135D runs 16 hours a day, five days a week. Though moving plastic isn’t a heavy-duty application, that’s still a lot of hours. “We haven’t had any reliability issues with this machine,” says Garrison. “And uptime is very im-

portant to our operation. Any lost time we don’t get back. If people are standing around not doing anything, we can’t get that production back.”

The excavator replaced a skid steer with a grapple attachment. “A skid steer wasn’t the most efficient way to do it. The environment was very harsh on the machine because it was running around so much. We’d spend loads of money on maintenance costs to keep it running.”

Trex approached its local John Deere dealership about an alternative solution. The dealer suggested using an excava-tor, which could remain stationary and not have to constantly “trolley” around. “It was like a light switch went on. Our production jumped significantly. The 135D is perfect for what we need it to do.”

That’s the advice a college graduate received in a classic late 1960s movie. Fast-forward four decades and it looks like pretty good advice.

Maintenance costs have dropped dramatically. “We haven’t had to spend really any money on it except for routine preventive mainte-nance. Fuel costs are a lot lower, as the machine isn’t tracking back and forth.”

’Linked in to preventive

maintenanceAs part of the John Deere WorkSight™ suite of construction-technology solu-tions, JDLink™ gives Garrison 24/7/365 access to valuable information on the 135D through an easy-to-use website, including machine-hour and maintenance tracking. Trex’s dealer, James River Equipment, uses JDLink to provide the company with alerts of any diagnostic trouble codes and to issue timely remind-ers to ensure preventive maintenance is on schedule.

“Our dealer will call to tell us they got an alert that our excavator is running hot,”

says Garrison. “We’ll go out and check the machine and, sure enough, there will be plastic film blocking the grille. This really helps us address an issue before it becomes a major problem and repair. And the dealer also lets us know when we have scheduled planned preventive maintenance, so we can make arrange-ments to work around it.

“With dependable machines and the support of our dealer and JDLink, our John Deere experience has been great. We’ve been really happy.” >>

JONESESthe

[ You’ll need an 850K Dozer ]

Master crawler craftsman. Danny Jones Sr. and his 850K Dozer are an unstop-pable combination.

6 The Construction Review

Danny Jones Sr., owner of Jones Bulldozing of Astoria, Illinois, has 40 years of seat time in a crawler, and it shows. When we visited, he was putting his John Deere 850K through its paces. And it was an impressive show. Jones is a man passionate about his craft.

“He’s the best operator I’ve ever seen,” says his son, Danny Jones Jr. “I’ll find myself being not quite

as productive at times because I’ll stop and watch him (laughs). He’s an inspiration.”

Crazy-good crawlerFather and son benefit from a host of production-boosting advantages that allow them to do more without a lot of extra effort. “It’s hard to put in words what Deere’s done with these dozers,” says Jones Jr. “It’s crazy.”

State-of-the-art electronic controls en-able complete command of an arsenal of hydrostatic advantages including power turns, counterrotation, and infinitely variable travel speeds. Independent track control speeds up or slows down each side — for smooth, full-power turns.

“With hydrostatic control, if you make a turn with a load, you’re not disengaging one track,” explains Jones Sr. “Unlike conventional dozers, this gives power to both tracks, so you can make a smoother turn to carry your load. It’s just awesome.”

The Joneses also appreciate the deceler-ator feature. “You can slow both ground speed and engine rpm, or ground speed

Pushing the boundariesThe unassuming Joneses are the last family in the world who try to “keep up with the Joneses.” The elder Jones, for example, recently won the Conserva-tionist of the Year Award by the Fulton County Soil and Water District. “My dad is so modest that if I had told him, he wouldn’t have showed up at the meet-ing where they presented the award,” says Jones Jr. “I had to keep it a secret. But he’s not so humble that he doesn’t proudly display the award in the cab of his 850K (laughs).”

Jones Bulldozing specializes in soil-con-servation work by carving ponds, dry dams, and terraces into broad swaths of Illinois farmland, as well as installing field tile and clearing land as needed. When we visited, father and son were installing 18 terraces to control erosion by slowing soil movement and runoff.

Jones Jr. joined forces with his dad about 10 years ago. “I helped him out a lot as a kid and always had a passion for it. I wouldn’t want to do anything else, and I plan to keep it going.”

The younger Jones represents the fourth generation of a company founded in the 1940s by his great grandfather, who started a rock quarry. “Business has been good over the years,” he says. “A lot has changed, some for the worse — fuel has gotten more expensive. But mostly for the better — the equipment has gotten so much easier to use and maintain.”

“The equipment has changed a bunch,” adds Jones Sr. “Everything used to have clutches and manual transmissions. At the end of the day, you were pretty tired. Today our 850K is quicker, more powerful, and much more comfortable. It’s amazing!”

The first time they used their new 850K, they couldn’t believe the productivity they were getting. “We were running an older dozer at the time, and we were pretty far behind on a job,” recalls Jones Jr. “Dad called me at the end of that first day and told me he had completed the job with the new Deere. I was stunned. I thought it would take several days.”

And they weren’t even tapping the machine’s full potential. A few weeks later the dealer provided real-time ma-chine utilization and health data via the JDLink™ machine-monitoring system. “Our 850K is even more productive than we first realized,” says Jones Sr. “Our dealer told us we could run it even harder. JDLink displays all kinds of charts and graphs, showing us exactly where the machine has been working and what it has done, along with fault codes to help with preventive maintenance. It really helps us improve productivity and reduce daily operating costs.”

GooD As GoLDDanny Jones Sr. and his son Danny Jr. of Jones Bulldozing, Astoria, Illinois, went on a Gold Key Tour at the John Deere Dubuque Works and received their 850K as it came off the assembly line. Both were struck by the pride everyone at the plant took in their workmanship.

“That was probably the neatest thing I’ve ever experienced,” says Jones Jr. “Attention to the customer is unlike anything I’ve seen on a factory tour. You walk down the assembly line and feel like you’ve known everyone for 100 years. They are very friendly and take a ton of pride in what they do. We were very, very impressed. We’ll be staying with Deere for a long time.” >>

only,” says Jones Jr. “It helps maintain traction without losing engine power and hydraulic response.”

Generous hydraulic flow and precise metering ensure powerful and quick blade response, while providing the natural “feel” that enhances any operator’s grading ability. “The controls are so simple,” says Jones Sr. “It’s unreal how easy they work. Very little effort is needed to control the blade.”

The power/angle/tilt (PAT) blade’s heavy-duty ball-and-socket C-frame joint resists material buildup for long-term grading precision. “With other blades, the dirt will break up and come out the sides before it reaches the top. These blades channel the dirt all the way to the top and keep it in the middle. It’s a fantastic design that is much more efficient.”

And creature comforts boost operator productivity and take the sting out of a long day. “It’s just a really nice cab,” says Jones Sr. “It’s quiet. The seat is comfortable. Visibility is outstanding. You can’t beat it.”

Royal treatmentJones Bulldozing switched to Deere after a competitor essen-tially turned its back on them. “They wouldn’t return our phone calls or be there when we needed them,” recalls Jones Jr. “With Deere, it makes no difference if you have one dozer or 100.

They treat you like kings and will bend over backwards for you. They’ve been absolutely wonderful. Hands down, you couldn’t ask for better dealer support.”

Reliability was another key selling point, and the 850K has been bulletproof, according to the Joneses. Designed and built by a quality-conscious workforce in Dubuque, Iowa, it is loaded with uptime-boosting enhancements, like the V-cool design and standard hydraulic reversing fan.

“They’ve really got those features figured out,” says Jones Sr.

“A compartment isolates the coolers from dust and engine heat. Guards and side shields keep trash out, with perforations serving as a filter. You can run the reversing fan at preset inter-vals or whenever needed to blow everything out.”

Father and son also love the auto-shutdown feature. “You just hit a button, and it’ll display how many minutes it will take for the engine to cool down to a safe temperature before shutting down. This helps protect your engine.”

Heavy-duty double-reduction planetary final drives are mounted independent from the track frames where they’re effectively protected from shock loads. “Great feature,” says Jones Sr. “You don’t get any vibration or shock like on the old crawlers. We just don’t have any trouble with these. They help us keep maintenance costs down.”

The Anderson brothers are driven to succeed

On Saturday nights during the summer, you’ll find Kevin and Jason Anderson trading paint at the 1-35 Speedway in Cameron, Missouri. Both have competed in the International Motor Contest Association for 10 years. Between the two, they’ve won over 40 races and have amassed too many top 10 finishes to count.

Together the brothers have also built a successful business, Kansas City’s Missouri Organic, recycling thousands of cubic yards of waste

that otherwise would have been landfilled, burned, or dumped illegally.

10 The Construction Review

“We recycle food waste into compost, a natural plant food and soil amendment, and we recycle yard waste into mulch as well as compost,” says Kevin, the company’s vice president of sales and marketing. “It’s a good feeling to know we’re creating products from materials that would have been wasted. That really makes it worth getting up every day. I’m really proud of our environmental consciousness.”

Need for speedAway from work and the racetrack, Kevin and Jason are adrenaline junkies. Before he decided to turn his attention to Missouri Organic, Kevin had aspirations

of becoming an airline pilot. The two still enjoy the occasional “$100 hamburger” — aviation slang for short trips in small private planes.

Jason, the company’s operations manager,

recalls a recent jaunt: “After we landed at a nearby airport, the flight stick came

completely out of the floor, wires and all. The mechanic told us he could do a quick job that would probably get us home or a full repair job that would take longer. We thought it would be prudent to wait around for a proper repair (laughs).”

Missouri Organic has been flying high, too, growing at a rate of 20 to 30 percent a year since Kevin and Jason’s father, David, founded the company in 1992. Dad started out as a one-man operation, taking in woody materials and splitting and selling firewood.

Over the years, the business has evolved into organic recycling. Missouri Organic collects 17,000 tons of food waste to make about 27,000 tons of compost an-nually. The food waste is collected from cafeterias and commercial food compa-nies. According to a study by Franklin & Associates, over 170,000 tons of food waste is landfilled annually in the Kansas City metropolitan area.

The company also recycles about 350,000 tons of yard waste into com-post and mulch. Missouri Organic grinds about 150,000 yards of brush to produce about 40,000 cubic yards of colored mulches every year. Yard waste is also composted and added to topsoil mixes.

Gentlemen, start your enginesThe company has owned John Deere wheel loaders for over a decade. “Our first was a 624H,” says Jason. “They’re great-quality loaders. We’ve never had any problems with them.”

“IT’S A GOOD FEELING TO KNOW WE’RE

CREATING PRODUCTS FROM MATERIALS THAT

WOULD HAVE BEEN WASTED. THAT REALLY

MAKES IT WORTH GETTING UP EVERY DAY.”

— Kevin Anderson, VP of Sales & Marketing, Missouri Organic —

Missouri Organic, of Kansas City, Missouri, is backed by the best “pit crew” in the business. “If there’s ever an issue — and there rarely is — our John Deere dealer is right there to take care of us, so we’re up and running almost 100 percent of the time,” says Kevin Anderson, vice president of sales and marketing. “Deere has always stood right behind us.”

Excellent reliability and product support are major reasons the company has gone with John Deere from the start. “We had a big ice storm in Kansas City in 2001, and the local dealership mobilized every piece of equipment they had to keep our operation up and running. That told us a lot about Deere and their dedication to their customers. We’ve been committed to them ever since.”

“THE 624K DOES PRETTY MUCH

anything we ask it to — it’s

PERFECTLY SIzED FOR THE JOB.”

— Jason Anderson, Operations Manager, Missouri Organic —

Today the company runs numerous 624K Loaders, as well as a Deere excavator and skid steer. The 624Ks are constantly on the prowl, feeding the grinder, moving topsoil or compost, shuttling mulch, and loading trucks.

The 624K’s PowerTech™ diesel delivers impressive torque reserves that top out at a whopping 57 percent, which helps maintain good boom and bucket speed in and out of the pile. “The 624K does pretty much anything we ask it to — it’s perfectly sized for the job. It has plenty of lift and bucket capacity with its seven-yard bucket. It can load our trucks up fast so they can get down the road to make deliveries.”

The 624K’s spacious, quiet cab boasts plenty of legroom and fatigue-beating ergonomics, including convenience features such as seat-mounted loader controls. Up front, an enhanced multi- function monitor displays operating, diagnostic, and maintenance info on a color LCD screen. “Our operators find them exceptionally comfortable and easy to run, which means they’ll be more productive for longer periods of time.

The more comfortable our operators are, the more likely they’ll come to work every day and get the job done as efficiently as possible.”

Generous tinted glass and a low-profile console allow a commanding view of the work ahead. “The cabs were designed with visibility in mind. You can see all the way around, 360 degrees, with few obstructions.” >>

IntroducIng the

75g and 85g

12 The Construction Review

Looking for the right machine to

add to your lineup? consider a

John deere 75g or 85g excavator.

Like a good utility infielder, they’ll fill in wherever they’re needed. Neither too big nor too small, these versatile excavators are just the right size for a wide variety of tasks. Optional rubber track pads or heavy-duty rubber belts let them work on paved surfaces and even cross curbs without causing damage. These, plus numerous track-width, arm, bucket, and other options let you spec your excavator to the way you work.

And their reduced-tail-swing configurations allow them to maneuver nimbly in and around congested jobsites. The 85G brings even more maneuverability to the plate, with an independent swing boom that lets you work even closer to curbs, walls, around structures, or in the midst of traffic. Both machines will be a hit on the jobsite — without hitting fences or important structures.

Inside their spacious comfortable cabs, easy-to-navigate enhanced LCD monitors let operators easily dial-in a wealth of machine info and functionality. And durable EPA Final Tier 4/EU Stage IV diesels meet rigid emission regulations, so you can put them to work, everywhere there’s work, including nonattainment areas.

Power hitterThe 75G and 85G will put your operators at the top of their game. Both boast the same no-compromise hydraulic-man-agement system and exceptionally smooth controls our bigger excavators are known for. Pinpoint metering combined with reduced tail swing take the worry out of working close.

Plus two productivity modes allow you to choose the digging style that fits the job. Power delivers a balance of speed and fuel economy for normal operation. Economy reduces top speed and helps save fuel.

New rotary control is a hitThe G-Series’ multi-language LCD monitor and rotary dial pro-vide intuitive access to a wealth of information and functions. Just turn and tap to select work mode, access operating info, check maintenance intervals, source diagnostic codes, adjust cab temperature, tune the radio, and much more.

Operators will also appreciate the comfortable fabric-covered adjustable suspension seat and ample legroom in the spa-cious, well-appointed cab. The wide expanse of front and side glass, narrow front cab posts, large tinted overhead hatch, and numerous mirrors provide virtually unrestricted all-around visibility. And as always, low-effort joysticks, a highly efficient

HVAC system, and an abundance of other conveniences pro-vide everything your operators need to do their best work.

Go the distanceLike you, our 75G and 85G are always willing to go the distance, delivering unsurpassed reliability with job-proven digging struc-tures and hydraulic, electrical, and undercarriage components. Their highly efficient cooling systems keep things running cool, even in high altitudes or tough environments.

And although it is the machines’ small stature that originally earned them a tryout, it’s their reduced daily operating costs that have really grabbed their fans. Daily and periodic mainte-nance is quick and easy. Large hinged doors provide wide-open access to service items. Lube banks, filters, and checkpoints are grouped for added convenience.

Large fuel tank and 500- and 5,000-hour engine and hydraulic oil-service intervals decrease downtime and expense. LCD monitor tracks scheduled maintenance intervals and issues reminders. Should a problem arise, it provides diagnostic infor-mation to assist in troubleshooting and decrease downtime.
