figurada del inglés
La pronuncación en inglés no es fonética como el español, y eso lo hace un idioma dificil de leerse en voz alta. Por eso, hemos hecho nuestro mejor esfuerzo para proveerte con una guía que se puede pronunciar como si estuvieras leyendo en español. A lo largo de tu pasaporte de inglés, la pronunciación figurada se representa entre paréntesis, por ejemplo:

Hay varios sonidos en inglés que son difíciles de representar con el alfabeto español. En esos casos hemos creado algunos símbolos para representarlos. Recuerda que ésta es sólamente una guía de pronunciación y que el sonido de las palabras es aproximado. Ten siempre las orejas bien abiertas para poder escuchar una pronunciación más exacta. No te olvides de preguntarle a tu maestro/a o a alguien que sepa inglés.
• El sonido th algunas veces se pronuncia como la "z" (zeta) de España, por ejemplo en la palabra "jueves" (Thursday = {zersday}). En otras ocasiones, se pronuncia como una "d" (de) suave, por ejemplo en la segunda "d" de la palabra "dedo." (they = {dey})

• "ss" significa que las "s"o la "z" deben de zumbar como imitando el sonido de un mosquito o de una abeja. (does = {dass})
• "k" se pronuncia como el sonido del "c" fuerte en español. (cat = {kat})
• "sh" se pronuncia como si estuvieras pidiendo silencio mientras que el "ch" se pronuncia igual que en español. (shop = {shop}mientras que cheat = {chit})

Introduction to this book's Pronunciation Guide for Spanish Speakers (A note for teachers)
Unlike Spanish, where each letter has one distinct sound, English pronunciation is not always easy to determine from the spelling of a word. To make pronunciation easier for your students, we have tried our best to provide a consistent pronunciation guide throughout this book. Remind your students that this is only a guide. Encourage them to keep their ears open or to watch people's mouths so they can adopt a more precise pronunciation.
There are several sounds in English that do not exist in Spanish. To represent these sounds, we have developed a unique set of symbols:
• The pronunciation for letter combination th is represented in two ways. To represent the voiced th, we have chosen the letter "z" as it sounds when pronounced by Spanish speakers from Spain. (Thursday = {zersday})
To represent the unvoiced th, the soft "d," such as the second "d" from the Spanish word "dedo" has been used. (they = {dey})
• "ss" has been used to represent the English "z" or "s" when it sounds like "z." We recommend imitating the sound of a mosquito or a bee. (does = {das})

• The letter "k" is not used in the Spanish alphabet. We have used it to represent the hard "c," "k" and "qu" sounds. (cat = {kat})
• Spanish does not have the English "sh" blend. In the pronunciation guide, "sh" represents the sound one would use when asking for silence while "ch" represents the "ch" blend as in the word "chair." (shop = {shop}while cheat = {chit})

About Frontier College
Frontier College fights poverty and isolation through the
power of literacy.
We work with people who would otherwise be missed by
the formal school system or who need extra support to
achieve their learning goals. With young children, we
work preventatively, to instill a love of reading to ensure
that they do not grow up to be non-reading adults.
Through an extensive volunteer network across Canada,
Frontier College promotes, supports and teaches literacy
to children, teens and adults.
With almost one in four adult Canadians experiencing
reading difficulties today, Frontier College is needed more
than ever. With over a century of innovative
programming behind us, Frontier College will continue its
role as a leader in the literacy movement by doing what it
has always done – reaching out to people wherever they
are and responding to their learning needs.

Sobre Frontier College
Frontier College lucha contra la pobreza y el aislamiento a
