As part of our UK sustainability strategy, we are involved in a number of key activities, including:

• Achieving ISO14001 certifi cation for all of our factories.

• Investing in newer and more effi cient environmentally-friendly plant and equipment at all our sites.

• Evaluating the use of waste heat generated by local energy production.

• Using materials from alternative, recycled or secondary sources (MARSS) in our production processes.

• Complying with all relevant environmental legislation, such as the Producer Responsibility Obligations (Packaging Waste) Regulations, the Duty of Care Regulations, and the Hazardous Waste Regulations.

• Working closely with Local Authorities to develop award-winning environmental projects.

• Taking an active interest in education by supporting local educational partnerships.

Customer Service is one of the key focus areas of our business and we are proud to offer additional services to help our customers achieve success.With our new Mixed Load Options service we can help solve stock, storage and delivery problems for builder’s merchants and house builders alike.

We understand that it is not always possible or convenient to have full loads of facings, specials and engineering bricks on site, so have developed our Mixed Load Options to offer a combination of products, all on one load, to suit your individual needs.

Encompassing facing bricks*, Baggeridge Blues, Red Class B Engineering Bricks and the seven most popular types of specials in both Smooth Red and Smooth Blue from six host factories within the UK, the load options are endless.

The new service enables you to keep your stock and storage under greater control and gives you the opportunity to increase your stock offering with a wide selection of bricks, but without the problems of bulk delivery or storage for each product.

In addition to convenience, you can be assured that you are reducing your carbon footprint. By using just one delivery, you are helping to cut down the amount of vehicles on the road, making the Mixed Loads Option the greener choice, every time.

Special shaped bricks

The full range of special shaped bricks to BS 4729 is available to match most of our products, and non-standard shapes can be made to meet specifi c applications.

A selection of popular special shapes is also available ex-stock includingcommonly used non-standard specials to our own specifi cation (pages 60-69).

Quality assurance

All bricks manufactured in the UK are produced under BS EN ISO 9001 Quality Management Systems independently certifi ed by CICS.

Colour consistency

State-of-the-art manufacturing technology allows us to optimise colour consistency, to minimise the problems of colour banding in fi nished brickwork, although we would not discourage established good site practice of mixing from a minimum of 3 packs.

Packaging

Most products are strap-banded and packed in heavy duty plastic sleeves for maximum protection in transit and on site.

All our facing bricks are manufactured in accordance with the European Standard Specifi cation for clay masonry units, BS EN 771-1, published in 2003. (British Standard 3921: 1985, Specifi cation for clay bricks, was formally withdrawn in April 2006 and specifi c terms & defi nitions are no longer applicable).

Range

The difference between the smallest and largest units, determined by the above test measurements, provides a fi gure for Range.

Different categories are based on formulae, and for UK work sizes, Table 2 is applicable.

Notes: For a product of R1 range, the difference in length, for example, between the smallest and largest bricks tested should not exceed 9mm, and for classifi cation the product must meet all requirements for the stated category. For on-site measurement guidance please refer to the following section.

Size Tolerance BS EN 771-1 : 2003 requires a manufacturer to declare a particular size category for each product based on individual brick measurements. Different categories take into account the wide range of brick types and variation in acceptable appearance related to different manufacturing methods.

Size categories are based on formulae (to consider the differently sized products within EC Member States), and for the standard UK work sizes, the following table is applicable.

Notes: T2 bricks are classifi ed as having the tightest tolerance. To determine the Tolerance applicable, measurements, using accurate instrumentation, are taken for each of 10 bricks sampled randomly from the consignment against their length, width and height. The mean fi gure is calculated by addition of each specifi c measurement (for height two measurements in transverse directions are taken to provide an average), divided by 10. This fi gure should not deviate from the work size by the declared ( ) Tolerance category shown in Table 1. For a product of T2 tolerance, the mean fi gure for the length should therefore fall between 211mm and 219mm.

As stated opposite, product Standard BS EN 771-1 : 2003 requires a manufacturer to declare a particular size category, based on individual brick measurements.

The use of delicate instruments is not practical however when dealing with issues on site, and in 2003 the British Standards Institution published a document suitable for on-site appraisal of brick units. This Publicly Available Specifi cation 70 (PAS 70), provides both guidance on appearance of facing bricks and practical on-site testing methods for size, using a conventional retractable steel rule as a viable alternative to the long jaw calliper method referred to in the European Standard.

PAS 70 has two procedures for measurement, the simpler of which (Procedure A), is used to determine the size tolerance of the brick consignment delivered to site. 10 individual bricks are selected at random from the consignment. For determination of tolerance, bricks are set out on suitable level ground and the overall measurement taken for the 10 bricks as illustrated to the left. This overall dimension is then divided by 10 to provide the mean fi gure; this is rounded to the nearest whole number and the difference between this fi gure and the work size is compared to the Tolerance categories in Table 3.

Notes: The individual fi gures in PAS 70 are 1mm less than those in the European Standard BS EN 771-1 for each category (See Table 1) and appear to be more stringent. This allows for the recording of whole millimetres using a retractable steel rule, but provides suffi cient confi dence that the categories indicated by the on-site test would be confi rmed by the more exacting measurements taken under laboratory conditions using certifi ed long jaw callipers.

PAS 70 also provides guidance on measurement of individual bricks should a dispute arise with regard to variation in individual brick sizes. Procedure B is used to determine the range, or difference between the smallest and largest bricks within the selected sample of 10 bricks.

Two measurements should be taken for each dimension, (as opposite) to provide a mean fi gure for each brick. The difference between smallest and largest units identifi ed is compared with the Range category (see Table 4).

As with tolerance, the individual range fi gures in PAS 70 are 1mm less than those in BS EN 771-1 in each case, and for classifi cation the product must meet all requirements for the stated category.

Useful on-site guidance

Appearance

BSI document PAS 70 provides general guidance on appearance.In practice it is not possible to write a universally applicable defi nition of acceptable appearance of facing brickwork, as this will vary signifi cantly with each type of clay brick. The appearance of brickwork is dependent on the choice of brick type, colour range, texture, mortar type and joint profi le, and workmanship. It is established good site practice to mix bricks from within a consignment, and to avoid unnecessary colour banding within elevations.

On-Site Principle of Assessment

It is sometimes necessary to assess the acceptability of minor defects such as cracks, chips, surface blemishes and variation in texture of clay facing bricks when delivered to site.

It is suggested in PAS 70 that samples from deliveries of bricks are compared with a previously constructed reference panel of an appropriate size (not less than 1m²) and suitably located on site.

This reference panel should be representative of what can reasonably be expected to be delivered to site and should be large enough to encompass known and acceptable variations of colour and texture in the particular brick type.

Brick panels should be viewed from a distance of 3 metres, which is suffi cient to reliably compare the aesthetic characteristics of the bulk delivery of facing bricks with the approved reference panel.

The professional team has many years’ experience in masonry detailing and product applications, and can provide essential technical support to achieve design objectives.

From facing brickwork and special shaped units to intricate paving designs, the department can provide that added refi nement to imaginative detailing.

In addition to the ‘standard’ facing brick products, the Company offers a comprehensive range of imperial and purpose made sizes to suit specifi c period detailing and architectural features, and the department offers advice on bond patterns and mortar selection.

Complex design details can be illustrated effectively with the use of AutoCAD software, and customers recognise the benefi ts of early involvement in the design process. From plinth detailing to eaves and corbel features, we can offer design advice and have an extensive drawings library of unique components for particular applications.
