    General Manager John CandlishHello everyone,

The last few months have been especially busy at Nazareth. Preparation for our reaccreditation dates of 30th and 31st October 2017 continues and a big thank you to everyone for your individual contributions which produce the fantastic whole.

Residents and Relatives meetings have been held as well as a Food Focus meeting – both valuable ways of receiving direct feedback from our care recipients and their representatives on how we best provide our service and what we can do to improve. Thank you to everyone who comes to these meetings and contributes – everyone’s input is useful and interesting and allow us to think differently to try to cater to everyone’s needs.

We also welcome Ray Hiskins – our new Catering Manager. Ray has significant experience in catering and in aged care, so he’s a fantastic wealth of knowledge to our team. Please welcome Ray and say hello if you haven’t already. A big thank you to Cedrick who remains with us at Nazareth and who filled the Catering Manager role so happily and so capably.

Nazareth Camberwell also chose to nominate and award six employees for their service to Nazareth – the winners were: Rosalina Oraye (PCA), Joanne Salmon (RN), Karuna Singh (Med Endorsed PCA), Renuka Sammons (Catering), Niroshan Perera (Environmental) and Amy Mackay (Reception/Admin).

A massive thank you to you all for your team spirit, your excellence in the workplace and your camaraderie. It’s really appreciated. We hope to have another employee Rewards and Recognition soon.

A reminder that Saturday November 25th 2017 will be our biggest fundraising event – our annual fete. Please bring your family and friends to this day to help the Sisters’ and the residents. Money received from this event is used for Camberwell to buy essentials for the residents – mattresses, beds etc as well as larger special projects for the house which benefit everyone.

For the football loving fans, September is an especially exciting time of year. I don’t know a great deal about football but I know there’s a fervour, particularly amongst Victorians, that reaches a fever pitch when the finals are on. Camberwell has an active footy tipping competition which has a large fan-base and I’m glad that it’s enjoyed by so many of you.

Compassion is the core value for September and October - a timely reminder to us all to have compassion for each other at all times. To act with compassion requires that we possess sympathy, understanding, care and concern for others’.

To quote Rumi – ‘Grief can be the garden of compassion. If you keep your heart open through everything, your pain can become your greatest ally in your life’s search for love and wisdom’.

Compassion is the recognition that other people’s problems, their pain and frustrations, are every bit as real as our own – often far worse. In recognising this fact and trying to offer some assistance, we open our own hearts and greatly enhance our sense of gratitude. Compassion is something you can develop with practice. It involves two things: intention and action. Intention simply means you remember to open your heart to others; you expand what and who matters, from yourself to other people. Action is simply the ‘what are you going to do about it.’ It’s not so important what you do, just that you do something.

As Mother Teresa reminds us, ‘We cannot do great things on this earth. We can only do small things with great love.’

Wishing everyone a safe and happy remainder of the year. Reaccreditation, our annual community fair and Christmas will soon be upon us. I hope you and your loved ones enjoy the coming months and thank you for everything you have given to Nazareth Camberwell and our care recipients throughout the year.

Welcome to Nazareth HouseOver the last few months we have welcomed new care recipients to Nazareth Care.

Administration Manager Tania D’Angelo-BowmanNazareth Care is currently working on the upgrade and launch of our new website. As the Administration Manager I have been involved with the input of ideas, information, testimonials, photos and images. This has involved various liaisons with RSS, co-ordinating photos of care recipients, employees, the Camberwell building, areas of the House, activities, aged care information and what our core values are.

A few of the ideas and design elements discussed for the website are:• links to general information about Nazareth Care

and our care areas• becoming a volunteer• employment opportunities• Sisters involvement• downloading of brochures • links to health government department sites and

our provided services. The website will also detail important information on the admissions process for example, what is required to obtain an ACCAS assessment, the forms required to be completed to be placed on a waiting list and enter a care facility. It will also detail and explain care fees and charges involved in aged care.

The services provided at Nazareth Care have been outlined in detail to showcase, the facility to its potential. This includes services such as, Care, Dental, Podiatry, Physiotherapy, Wellbeing Wellness Centre, social programs, hairdressing salon, our Chapel and Mass services. We hope to highlight our special events such as our annual fete and include our House newsletters.

Obtaining testimonials from employees and care recipients along with signed consent forms have been a vital part in the new website process. All photos involving employees and care recipients must be submitted with a consent form. Photos enable us to show how our core values are lived and the warmth that Nazareth House has in creating just that….. a home. This has also enabled our care recipients to get involved with the website, making them show off their home and feel part of a team and community.

Images have been designed, taken, set using artistic formats, incorporating all elements of design, such as, colour, space, depth and balance. Images, photos, text, information and links are carefully considered to enable Nazareth House to create a website specifically designed for our requirements.

We hope to be able to launch it soon for you all to view.

Receptionist Amy MackaySince walking through these doors almost 15 months ago, I didn’t expect to learn so much about life and death as I have. What drew me to Nazareth House was the opportunity to work for an organisation that served God through serving his creation. I had just come from working in a youth mental health organisation/ university research environment and whilst I found the clinicians to be quite passionate about helping young people, they seem to miss the point in that they were not all working for a collective higher purpose.

While, at Nazareth Care, I got the sense almost instantaneously, that the employees and volunteers came to work here because something within them drew them to work in a place and with people who shared the same values and ethics as they did. To work hard, for Truth, seems to be the Nazareth motto amongst those employees, care recipients and relatives whom I have shared great conversations with these last 15 months.

Being a position where I literally see people come in and go out has been at times no easy place to be. I’ve found myself questioning the meaning of my own life; am I doing it right? What else do I want to do!? Is this all there is? How much more do I want from life without becoming too selfish, since I already have so much……. how much more can I give? And to whom?

I haven’t quite received all the answers to those questions, but feel I am well on my way or at least I think I am and I have a few stripes around my hairline to prove it!

So, what’s the meaning of life I hear you ask? To LIVE it, in any way you can, want to, are able to……with as much love and devotion to the Cause of all Life.

    Well, that’s where I’m at so far……..

Wellbeing and Lifestyle Assistant - Adrian GiffinMen’s Group Outing to Williamstown Lunch at the ‘Off the Pier Fish and Chippery’This outing does not take much to persuade the men as the group look forward to our Annual Winter outing to Williamstown.Williamstown is a ¾ of an hour drive from Nazareth Care Camberwell which allows plenty of time for sightseeing and ‘Banter’ between the employees and the men.On arrival at the restaurant the men were accompanied by Nazareth Care employees into the restaurant where restaurant employees waited to welcome and direct them to their tables. Nazareth employees were very appreciative of the effort made by the restaurant employees to arrange the dining tables to allow easy access for the men to be seated. Once the group settled they tucked into the ‘tried and true’ Flake and Chips served in the old fashioned fish and chip paper and enjoyed a cold drink to complete their meal. After the men had enjoyed their lunch it was decided amongst the group to head off on a scenic drive around the beach road of Hobsons Bay. Much reminiscence shared amongst the group. The men were a little quiet on the return trip, which was testament that they had enjoyed their lunch and day out.

Weekly Mass Times - Nazareth House - Camberwell Main Chapel: Monday to Friday 6.45am - Saturday 7.00am - Sunday 10.00am St Michael’s Dining Room: Monday to Saturday 10.00am Rosary before Mass at 9.30am St Joseph’s: Monday to Saturday 9:30am

Wellbeing and Lifestyle Assistant - Estella SmithIn recognition of the Colombian Independence Music Festival.A festival was held at Nazareth Care on Tuesday 25th July 2017 in the Jacaranda room. The venue was decorated with all things yellow, blue and red, the colours of the Colombian flag to enhance the theme and ambiance of the festival.During the event the care recipients were given the opportunity to learn about Colombian culture and enjoy some of the many typical dances performed in the different festivals of Colombia. Colombia has a large number of festivals including arts festivals, music festivals, folk festivals, cultural festivals, among others which bare witness to the national love of celebration, and that we want the care recipients to experience.Australia being a multicultural society celebrates a variety of events in the communities to increase the awareness of the Colombian culture. This special event held at Nazareth Care enabled the care recipients to indulge in the culture the music and the dance of the music festival. The celebration was a wonderful success attended by a large group of care recipients, families and friends, who were treated to a special Afternoon Tea and Happy Hour in which they had the opportunity to socialise and enjoy a special afternoon.

Wellbeing and LifestyleFrom Through Road Kindergarten and Children’s Centre

From April 2016, we here at Through Road Kindergarten, began a partnership with Nazareth House (Camberwell) which allows us to visit the care recipients each fortnight. We embark on our excursions on a Monday morning with 12 children in tow. The children take turns each fortnight to walk up to Nazareth House, aged from about 18 months to 5 years, getting out in the community and giving cheerful greetings to our neighbours and shop owners! The children just love these outings, and each Monday morning the teacher’s here are asked “Are we going to Nazareth House today?” There are sighs of disappointment when it happens to be an ‘off’ week, however, the excitement is palpable when the answer is “YES!”.Creating strong community connections was the primary outcome that we were hoping to achieve with these visits, yet we have noticed so many more benefits. Many families these days reside in different countries and are not able to visit grandparents or elderly members of the family. Lives are becoming increasingly busy and care recipients may not have many visitors due to the demands of work and well life! By visiting Nazareth House we are able to provide this intergenerational connection for both the children at Through Road Kindergarten and Children’s Centre and the care recipients of Nazareth House. We have noticed an increase in the children’s empathy with each other and in the community. We discuss with the children how important it is to be more caring and inclusive using Nazareth House as an example. It benefits the children’s self esteem when they see what an impact they are having on the care recipients through the smiles they see on their faces. It empowers them to see that they can make a difference to people’s lives. Thank you to Nazareth House for this ongoing opportunity to build a more caring world and we look forward to an ongoing partnership in the years to come! From everyone at Through Road Kindergarten and Children’s Centre.

Wellbeing and LifestyleSimple Love at Nazareth House“Wisdom belongs to the aged, and understanding to the old.” (Job 12:12)As seminarian from Corpus Christi College, what a privilege it was for Christopher, my fellow seminarian and myself, to be sent to live and learn on our pastoral experience with the elderly at the Nazareth House of the Sisters of Nazareth in Camberwell, Victoria from 2nd to 21st July, 2017. During the time with the residents, the Sisters and staff, we were given a number of lifelong lessons. One of the most inspiring and memorable lessons which has shaped me and my future mission is love. The love of the Sisters reaches out to people. First of all, this love is for the residents especially for those who are dying. On the very first day, when Christopher and I started the work, we were taken around the House. We came to the room for the dying and were told that the Sisters have never let any resident die alone at any time. At this moment, my heart was moved. Then, while living in the House, I saw the Sisters continuously visiting and encouraging the last-stage residents and companying them with prayers. The Sisters not only pray with the residents when they are with them but also remember them in their daily prayers when they pass away. In addition, their love is clearly expressed through hospitality. They opened their arms widely to welcome us and created the best opportunity for us to be with the elderly to learn and have a caring experience for our pastoral mission. At first, they welcomed us with smiles and presence and on the last day, they “welcomed” us with thanks and gifts. While we were residing there, they welcomed us with constant care for our daily needs. Thank you, Sisters for your love and living example of prayer. Love is additionally manifested in the daily care of the staff particularly for the elderly. Every early morning, while all of the residents may remain in their deep sleep, some of the staff come to watch their sleep with medication gently and carefully prepared so that the sleep is not disturbed and their lives are well cared for. Moreover, others work arduously to keep the residents’ house clean all of the time. As a new day begins, the residents are assisted and provided with whatever is best for them that can be brought from their cuppa to main meals, from doing exercise to playing games, from walking to sitting and lying. At the end of the day, the residents are sleeping under the constant attention of the staff. All of those above remarkable services for the residents from the Nazareth House staff might not be maintained without their love. Thank you for your loving service.

Above all, the love of the elderly residents touched my heart when I lived there and I shed tears when I left. Every day, I came to visit some of them and listened to their stories. I came to learn the great love they have for their children and grandchildren. They are commonly thought to stay at the nursing home to have a better care. It is obvious that they do. However, their care for their children is so much greater than what might be thought of. Some of them might be presumed to be forgetful but they remember their children in their heart and prayer every day for them. They think of them, miss them and hope for them to be happy always with their children. Most of the residents share the common reason that they wanted to come to the Nazareth House to limit their joy in order for their children to have more joy, to lessen their dream for the children to dream big, to shorten their time for the children to prolong theirs with their children, to shorten their journey for the children to travel further, to carry their own burden so that their children can more easily carry their own children’s burden. Their sharing reminds me of a story that my Dad told me when I was a boy. The story is about a father feeding his baby with a spoon. He said: “every day, the father feeds his baby with a spoon, he is so happy to do that and he feels so much happier as the baby finishes the spoon of food. Every time the spoon is finished, the father smiles thrillingly and he tries to make some funny gestures by clapping his hands, making a funny face, creating animal-like sounds in order to make his child smile with him and eat some more food. This is repeated over and over as the spoon is finished the father and his child smile. One day, the father gets old and he is unable to manage his life while his baby grows up as a man. Now, the father is fed by his own son with a spoon as the son was. As the food in the spoon is eaten, there are no smiles or jokes, or any sound like before except tears from both.” As my Dad stopped there, I was unable to understand the story and I simply asked Dad: “Why do they both cry?” he nodded his head, kept silent for a little while and replied to me: “My Son, later you will understand.” Now, due to the life sharing of the residents, I may have a bit more understanding of what the story is about and how great the love of the residents is for their children and grandchildren. The love of the residents also goes beyond their family boundary. The residents show their loving care for one another. The less fragile care for the fragile with simple gestures by giving a cup of water, preparing a chair and accompanying with time, presence, prayers as well as supportive words and a sense of humour in order to create the most joyful atmosphere for others. Moreover, their love is generously extended to Christopher and me by concerning for our daily needs, which they are constantly on the lookout for.

Some of them give us one banana when they have two and one T-shirt when they have another. On my last day, I came to say goodbye to the residents. One of the residents tried to look for something to give me but he was unable to find anything to give me. Then he asked me to help him take off one of his T-shirts. At first, I thought it might be a bit hot for him and he was unable to manage to take off due to his health, however, as the T-shirt was taken off he held it for a brief time, gave it to me and said: “I want to give you my T-shirt as a gift.” I felt deep humility. Other residents gave me their tears as I said goodbye and walked away, then I looked back at them sitting in a chair at a corner of their room, it was so hard for me to leave. It was really an “easy come hard to go” experience. My heart followed and treasured their tears of love. Thank you, the residents of the Nazareth House, for your love for us. In short, what a lovely and blessed time for Christopher and myself to live and work at the Nazareth House! One of the invaluable lessons which we have had from the elderly residents, Sisters and staff is love which will never fade away in time and become our future mission. Therefore, how wise and happy for those who open their hearts to elderly people because they are “the example of love, dedication and wisdom,” As Pope Francis said. --------------------------------

My family and I have just returned from a trip to America, where we spent a month traveling around. We went to Vegas, New Orleans, Dallas and Nashville. While in Vegas we did a day trip to the Grand Canyon, which we all agree, was a highlight of the trip, along with a tour of the Dallas cowboy’s football stadium and going to Graceland. We are now looking forward to our next trip, not sure where or when that will be. I feel very lucky to have been given the opportunity to be part of the Nazareth House community and care for the care recipients, with the support of all areas of employees and the wonderful Sisters.

Getting to Know You .. Care Recipient -Patsy StaffordMy name is Patsy Stafford and I am proud to call Nazareth Care “Home” and I feel part of a Loving and Caring Family.

Every day begins with a bright smile from a employee and all my needs are attended to being big or small. Care recipients also help each other by many acts of kindness.

It is impossible to sing the praises too highly of all the employees as they are truly dedicated people.

I also find participating in the Social and Leisure sessions and conversing with our multicultural employees very interesting and stimulating.

Finally ‘Contentment’ is a gift from God. I have found it here at Nazareth Care.

Getting to Know You ..Employee - Registered NurseJoanne SalmonMy name is Joanne Salmon and I am one of the RN’s in St Josephs. I work Tuesday to Friday on the morning shift. I first came to visit Nazareth House in the early 80’s when my grandmother was a care recipient here. She died in 1984. My parents both grew up in the area and settled in Surrey Hills. I attended Siena College and in the mid 80’s came to Nazareth House as a student and participated in community service. I finished school in 1988 and started my nursing degree at Deakin University the following year. Nursing was all I ever wanted to do. In 1993 I married my husband, Brenton at St Dominic’s church. Fr Condan who sometimes visits Nazareth when in Melbourne married us. Brenton and I have two children, Mackenzie who is 16 and Georgia who is 14. I also have a stepson, Christopher who is 28. This year Christopher and his partner had their first child, a little girl named Evis. I came to work at Nazareth in 2014. I was a frequent visitor as my father; Noel was a care recipient in St Joseph’s. He had been here for four years at that time when Delia asked me to come and work here. I recall telling her I would need to check if it was ok with Noel, which of course he was. As dad had grown up in the area he was a mad Hawthorn supporter. I’m sure some of you might remember dad getting around in his electric wheelchair with his Hawthorn scarf on the back. Dad died in November 2015. I now have the pleasure of seeing dad’s brother, Neville and his wife Barb each day as they are now care recipients in St Augustine’s.

What residents/representatives say is the best thing about this home:

    • Care is good• Comfort and cleanliness• Clean, activities provided, religious

requirements met• Friendly people and Sisters – ‘very happy

here’• Providing a safe environment and regular

monitoring of care recipients to ensure needs are met

    • Run well. Safe and secure• The love and care extended to us all. It’s my

‘home away from home’ Do not want to be anywhere else’.

Some issues to be addressed:• Food – Food survey, results to be discussed

at Food Focus Group on 24th August• Increase involvement in decisions re care

(multi-disciplinary team)• Complaints process – reminder that posters

have always been displayed around the house• Air conditioning (part of significant

refurbishment)• Staffing (addressed at Workforce Planning)

Gary Hayes and I went to WHS training in May/June and have subsequently displayed a statement around the house to ratify membership of the re-configured Workplace Health and Safety Committee for a term of three years. Managers and designated employees have been busy conducting a self-assessment against the accreditation standards in preparation of our site visit at end of October. Congratulations to all employees who were nominated by their teams for the Rewards and Recognition, and all those who actually received the rewards.

TestimonialTop class care. The nurses are very good, attentive, caring and nothing is a bother for them.

On initial entry I was unsure, but the Sisters and employees were very welcoming. They were there to welcome me upon arrival with open arms.

We are very blessed with all the activities such as physiotherapy, complimentary therapies and wellbeing.

Spiritual beliefs are very well taken care of with the chapel on site. The clergy is very good, always here to take our confessions.

Whether a seasoned professional, or starting on a journey at Nazareth Care Camberwell (NZC), we are part of a team on a mission to create consistently a great environment and experiences for our care recipients and their representatives. There were 48 responses, more than previous years, (compared to 40 responses in 2016, and 16 in 2015) which we are very grateful for. Overall the satisfaction levels are high, and we welcome the opportunities we have identified for improvement, which we will be addressing. A snippet of some of the responses:

ACFI Coordinator Donna ColeThe Core values that guide and shape Nazareth Care also provide a strong foundation for the principles and function of ACFI, particularly the core value of JUSTICE.The role of the ACFI Coordinator is to provide evidence of care, and furthermore to ensure Nazareth Care receives the correct level of remuneration, from the Federal Government, for the care provided by our committed employees. The ACFI Coordinator is to capture and document all the elements of nursing care that occur every day

    • Assisting during meal times

    • Helping a resident to an activity that they really enjoy

    • Ensuring complex care issues are managed through best practice

    • Providing medication support.

All these elements of daily care require care plans and assessments to ensure individualised care programs are communicated to employees. This ensures just and correct care for each resident and this care program is then transferred to Medicare for a correct funding level. This is the aspect of my role that I enjoy the most, ensuring that all the efforts of employees that provide exceptional care is re-numerated in a just fashion.
