In spring 1975, for one month she studied with Saito Sensei in Japan. She moved to Iwama in 1980 and continued studying with Saito Sensei for 3½ years in Iwama. She continued many sojourns to study with him until Saito Sensei passed in May 2002. She is currently the head instructor of Sunset Cliffs Aikido. Pat Hendricks began studying Aikido in 1974 while a student at Monterey Peninsula College in California under Stan Pranin. In 1976 moved to Iwama, Japan, where she became uchi-deshi and a student of Saito Sensei for two years. Over the next 25 years Pat Sensei returned regularly to Iwama as uchi-deshi under Saito Sensei. She still returns to this day. In 1984 she founded the Aikido of San Leandro dojo. At the All-Japan Demonstration in Tokyo in 1992, Pat Sensei was very honored to have been the sole uke for Saito Sensei's demonstration, the first time a Caucasian, less a female aikido-ka, participated as uke for such a high-ranking teacher at such a high profile event. Kim Peuser, 7th Dan, began training in Aikido at the Aikido Institute Oakland in 1974. He was Chief Instructor at the dojo from 1988-1995 and again from 2002 to 2008. He has trained extensively in California, and under Morihiro Saito Sensei, 9th Dan, of the Iwama Dojo in Japan. Peuser Sensei is the on the Board of Directors of Aiki Integrated Arts and is a Director of the Takemusu Aikido Association. Howard Hoa Newens Sensei, 7th Dan, has trained and taught Aikido since 1967. Throughout the years, he studied with Sensei Dang Thong Phong, 6th dan, Seiichi Sugano, 8th dan, and the late Morihiro Saito, 9th dan. Newens Sensei is the former head of Aikido Institute Oakland. In addition to directing Aikido Institute Davis, he currently serves on the board of Takemusu Aikido Association a non-profit corporation dedicated to promoting Aikido. He has also trained in Wu Tai Chi and Chi Kung since 1987. Newens Sensei has published a comprehensive series of Aikido DVDs entitled Aikido Curriculum and a new book “Aikido Insights" that presents the insights gained after forty-four years of training.
