The Cross Campus Principal’s Letter

t our whole

school assembly two weeks ago, Primary stu-dents Naman and Jessica, and Secondary stu-dents Natasha and Sonal intro-duced the school to a stunning stu-dent-made film about how we use disposable plastic at Bang-kok Patana and beyond.

The four presenters were among a committed group of students from Year 5 to Year 12 who worked for the best part of a week on this project at the end of last term. They were taught and guid-ed by two talented artists-in-residence, Lara Jacoski and Patrick Belem of Bem-Te-Vi Productions, and were supported by five dedi-cated Primary and Secondary teachers. In the process, they learned a huge amount about themselves as much as they did about the topic matter and the

nature of film-making, and I don’t think I have personally been a part of such an intense, rewarding and productive example of project-based learning ever before.

The students have been inspired to continue the project in various ways, especially as this year we have set the goal high for Bangkok Patana – to eliminate as much of our unnecessary plastic waste as realistically possible.

The two minute video they screened at the school assembly (to an audience of around 2,600), is an introduction to a full 20 mi-

nute documentary, which will be shared in various ways later this term. You can watch this trailer by click on the image or by using this link: https://vimeo.com/138062076

Special mention should go to Matthew (Tawin) in Year 12 who created this trailer from the huge quantities of footage filmed. The students have

always focused on the small steps we can take to protect our planet and yet making this film from scratch was a giant step for them to take. They are an inspiration to all of us. Perhaps, as you watch this short film, you might ask yourself,

What are my small steps? James Penstone Cross Campus Principal

he Lost Property Checkpoint for Primary and Secondary students is located on the ground

floor under the clock tow-er, near the big elevator and Front Hard Court in Secondary. It is open every school day between 8.30am and 1.00pm. The checkpoint currently has

many PE/sports bags, sports shoes, uniforms, water bottles and even a tennis racket left behind by stu-

dents in the past two weeks. Please go take a look, you might find your lost belongings. If you are not sure where the checkpoint is, please contact Re-ception at the front of school. Please remember to label your items and they will be returned to you.

e are pleased to an-nounce that two train-

ers from the Freedom from Chemical Dependency (FCD) or-ganisation will return to Bangkok Patana from Tuesday 29th Sep-tember to Friday 2nd Octo-ber. Ms Marley Bennett and Mr Dave Waterman will be working mainly with Year 9 students, meeting with them every day, but will also give presentations to Years 8, 11, 12 and 13.

FCD is a non-profit organisation that provides substance abuse pre-vention education for schools. Since 1976, they have taught over a million students of all ages. Their mission is to: Encourage and support the non-use of alcohol and other illegal or illicit drugs during the growing years Empower young people to make healthy, responsible choices regarding alcohol and other drug use Teach students and adults how to recognise the early warning signs of substance abuse and to intervene appropriately

Educate students, parents, teachers, and administrators on the physiological and psychological effects of alcohol and other drugs Promote awareness of drug addiction, including alcoholism, as a progressive, chronic, and often fatal disease Provide educational communi-ties with the guidance and training necessary to implement compre-hensive, effective approaches to substance abuse prevention

The partnership between Bang-kok Patana and parents has al-ways been a vital and crucial ele-ment in the pastoral care we pro-vide. To this end an FCD session will be offered to all parents to meet and discuss common con-cerns about substance abuse pre-vention for their children in Bang-kok. Some of the topics to be addressed include: Effective ways to communicate with your child about drugs and drug use

Up-to-date facts about current drug use and trends What to say about your own experiences with alcohol and/or drug experimentation

How to spot early warning signs of trouble and effective ways to respond

This meeting will take place on Thursday 1st October at 6.00 pm at Bangkok Patana in the Confer-ence Centre. We encourage you to take advantage of this oppor-tunity to meet with the FCD edu-cators and to hear their stories.

The calendar for this academic year is available on the front of the school web-

site or click here to view it.

am delighted to formally invite you to the annual University In-

formation Evening on Wednesday, 16th September 2015 held in the Conference Centre.

The aim of the event is to provide a global overview of the university ap-plication process in different coun-tries around the world and to show how Bangkok Patana School sup-ports your child in the process. In addition, we are excited to wel-come Daniel Grayson to the event. Daniel worked for eight years as an Associate Director of Admis-sions at Tufts University which in-cluded five years focused on appli-cations from Asia. His writing has appeared in the New York Times and his work in international ad-

missions was featured in Fortune magazine.

Daniel will present on two topics; the first will be directed towards stu-dents utilising university websites in the university selection process. The second, titled “Behind Closed Doors”, will be offered later in the evening schedule and is directed towards stu-

dents and parents wanting to learn more on how the admission decision is made in US universities. We expect a number of education centres and universities to also attend. A sched-ule of events is available by clicking here.

If you are interested in attending the University Information Evening please email our Careers and Uni-versities secretary, Khun June, at [email protected] Our presentations will be available

through the school website along with the contact details of the edu-cation centres in attendance. If you have any questions about

this event please do not hesitate to contact me at [email protected] or on 02785 2200 Ext 2329.

angkok Patana School takes the safety of our school community very seriously. We have a man-

agement team that meet and discuss many different crisis scenarios and we have processes and procedures in place for these. We have strong links with the local police and the various embassies who alert us to any security con-cerns and also visit our school to review our existing pro-cedures and provide advice on security measures.

One of the areas that we practise regularly throughout the year is the Fire Evacuation and Lockdown proce-dures. In Term 1 we will have an ‘announced’ fire drill and an ‘announced’ lockdown drill where staff and stu-dents are informed about the date and time of the prac-tice in advance and we ensure that everyone knows what to do should they hear one of the alarms sound. At other times of the year we hold ‘unannounced’ drills. This ena-bles us to see how our community react to the alarm sounding when they are unprepared for it. You may hear from your child/ren in the next couple of weeks that they have taken part in a fire drill.

Please read below so you are aware of our procedures

should you be on campus when an alarm sounds. What should you do if you are on the school campus

when an alarm sounds? Lockdown Alarm

If you are on campus and hear the ‘lockdown’ alarm (like an old war time air raid siren) please follow instruc-tions from nearby staff. If you are not in a building please enter the nearest building and follow instructions from staff. In a lockdown, you should be out of sight until you hear three clear whistles from the security team or are instructed that it is all clear from a security guard or member of staff. You will not be allowed to enter or exit the campus during a lockdown. Fire Alarm

If you are on the school campus and hear a fire alarm, please act immediately and follow the Evacuation Route sign to the nearest assembly point (see example below).

Please make sure that you report to the Zone Fire Point Person who will be wearing an emergency jacket and have radio communication. They will be located in the middle of the zone area and will take your name and tell you where you need to stand. There are six zones – green, yellow, blue, white, red, and purple. Look for these signs when you are next in school to familiarise yourself with the evacuation routes.

If you are outside the school grounds during a Fire Evac-uation please note that you will not be allowed entry into school until the all clear has been given. Please follow in-structions from our Security team.

CAs It is possible that every after-

noon your child will be on a differ-ent bus number, with different stu-dents and hence a different daily route. New afternoon bus lists will not be distributed. Please note that the bus number may change at the bus parking area if buses are com-bined due to cancellations. If your child is unsure of their bus number they can ask their ECA teacher or Transport staff when they arrive at the bus parking area. The area is well staffed every afternoon at all departure times.

Changes to Transport: Every day there are many changes to our students' normal Transport arrangements. The Transport De-partment thanks you for providing this information in advance so that they can amend routing, inform bus monitors and drivers of the daily changes. Please assist us by ensur-ing that your child is aware of the change to their bus in advance to avoid confusion. The Transport De-partment is unable to ensure that messages are delivered to each stu-dent or teacher. If you have an ur-gent message that your child must

receive during the school day, please contact the Primary or Secondary Office, as ap-plicable, at these numbers: Primary - 02 785 2260, Secondary - 02 785 2310. Morning Buses: The Transport Department contin-ues to monitor the arrival time of some buses. Adjustments to pick up times may be needed and/or amendments made to routes as we still have many new enrolments and students moving residences. Parents will be contacted if their child’s bus is affected.
