• Co-founded major applied research project on conflict early warning, crisis mapping and humanitarian technology. Playing pivotal role in pioneering field of crisis mapping and developed applied research agenda to formalize the field. Identified critical lessons learned, best practices and innovative technologies. Drew on insights from public health, disaster management, civilian protection, strategic nonviolent action, digital activism and citizen journalism. Pursuing extensive consultations with UN field-based agencies, international NGOs and leading technology experts. • Solicited by Berkman Center to carry out two studies on impact of information revolution on democracy, authoritarian rule and social resistance. First study tests whether the diffusion of Information Communication Technology (ICT) is statistically significant predictor of protest events. Second study, co-authored with Berman Center fellow, assesses whether diffusion of ICTs has any statistically significant influence on democracy. Note that the two studies remained informal working papers.

• Collaborated with Professor Didier Sornette and Dr. Ryan Woodard to apply techniques from earthquake physics to conflict analysis. Explored statistical behavior of conflict foreshocks and aftershocks. • Directing Ushahidi’s strategic partnerships with international humanitarian, human rights and media organizations. Actively managing conceptual development of Swift River to validate multi-media crowdsourced information. Developing new tools to visualize dynamic crisis data. • Significantly scaled up the Horn of Africa’s regional early warning system. Provided technical training and analytical support to the Conflict Early Warning and Response Network (CEWARN). Developed Geographic Information Systems (GIS) guidelines for geospatial analysis. Enhanced quantitative conflict indicators and integrated environ-mental indicators. Initiated partnership with IGAD Climate Prediction and Impact Assessment Center (ICAPC). Liaised with government officials to assess capacity for national early response units. Secured USAID contract renewal to scale up network.

The Swiss Peace Foundation at the United Nations (SPF) NY, DC United Nations Representative 2003-2004

Tufts University: “Digital Democracy” Boston, MA Co-lecturer with Google colleague Spring 2009

• Designed and co-taught new 14-week undergraduate seminar. Developed syllabus and powerpoint presentations. Core topics taught included new media, citizen journalism, digital activism, role of digital technology in crises, censorship and circumvention, cybersecurity and digital technology for development. Made extensive use of multimedia including wikis, blogs, videos and Twitter. Graded all in class presentations and final research projects.

The Fletcher School: “The Art and Science of Statecraft” Boston, MA Teaching Assistant for Professor Dan Drezner Summer 2008

• Created seminar website with syllabus and all associated readings and links. The Fletcher School: “Managing Complex Systems” Boston, MA Co-lecturer with Professor Moomaw Fall 2007 • Proposed, designed, co-taught seven-week, 14-lectures graduate seminar on the application

of complexity science to the social sciences. Developed 10-page syllabus and identified reading materials including list of further readings. Core topics taught included principles of complexity science, stocks and flows, agent-based modeling and social network analysis.
