Patriot League Notebook League Schedule Opens Saturday; Catch the Action on All-AccessAfter nearly two months worth of games, the Patriot League schedule finally opens up on Saturday. Lehigh visits American in a matchup of teams that have captured the past three League titles, while Army goes to Colgate, Lafayette is at Holy Cross and Bucknell visits Navy to round out the slate. Almost every regular and postseason Patriot League game will be streamed on high-speed broadband on Patriot League All-Access, available through www.patriotleague.org for a monthly fee of $7.95. The Patriot League has already been producing free content on All-Access with the magazine-format video Webcast “Sidelines: Inside the Patriot League” as well as weekly highlight segments for men and women’s basketball.

Bucknell/Navy Tips Off CBS College Sports Network SlateThe League opener in Annapolis between Bucknell and Navy will be shown at 8 p.m. Saturday on CBS College Sports Net-work, the first of 12 Patriot League contests (nine regular season, three postseason) shown on the network this season. Most of those are part of the Patriot League’s package with the network, which begins on Jan. 16 when Holy Cross visits Bucknell at 2 p.m. CBS College Sports Network is available through cable operators as well as on DIRECTVChannel 613 and Dish Network Channel 152.

Enjoying the Holidays and the New YearPatriot League teams had a busy time between Christmas and New Year’s, and many enjoyed themselves on the court as the eight squads combined for a 10-8 record in last week’s games. Bucknell won all three of its games, while American and Lehigh each won a pair of contests. Army, Lafayette and Colgate earned a victory as well. With a 4-1 record on Monday and Tuesday, Patriot League teams are 14-9 since Christmas and 7-3 in the New Year.

Sunday SurpriseSunday was best known as the final weekend of the NFL regular season, but in Patriot League circles the first set of contests in 2011 turned into the most exciting of the entire season thus far. Bucknell provided the top theatrics, as Mike Muscala hit a turnaround jumper off a full-court inbounds pass from Joe Willman as time expired for a 62-61 win at Richmond. Muscala’s shot received exposure on Youtube as well as blogs on national sports websites. That was just part of Sunday’s drama, as Lafayette went to double overtime to beat Fairleigh Dickinson while Holy Cross and Navy each fell by just two points.

Bison Building Momentum for Patriot League SeasonBucknell completed its non-League schedule with a 9-7 record by defeating Richmond on Sunday, an amazing finish considering the Bison were looking at a 2-6 record and a slew of road games heading into December. The Bison have won seven of their past eight games, including four of five on the road with just a close four-point loss at Boston College right before Christmas. Mike Muscala leads the team and ranks seventh in the Patriot League with 13.8 points per game, but the Bison have a group of options with seven players in the top 35 in the League in scoring. Darryl Shazier leads the League with 5.6 assists per game.

American Does Damage Out WestAmerican headed out to California last week and showed why it was the preseason favorite in the Patriot League. The Eagles beat Fordham and Delaware by double digits on their way to the title at the 44th annual Cable Car Classic, hosted by Santa Clara. Vlad Moldoveanu was named MVP, and on Monday also earned Patriot League/Anaconda Player of the Week honors, for averaging 24.0 points and 5.5 rebounds in the two games. The Eagles completed a difficult eight-game road trip with a 4-4 record, and have their most non-League wins since the 1982-83 season by completing the slate at 10-5 after beating Brown on Monday.

Plenty of Similarities Between Bison, EaglesAmerican and Bucknell look like mirror images heading into the League schedule. The Eagles have 10 wins and the Bison nine against a tough non-League schedule, as American played four games against BCS-level opponents and two versus ranked foes while the Bison have taken on three BCS-level squads and a top 10 team. Six of American’s first seven wins came against a team it lost to a year ago, while Bucknell has been on its own revenge tour of late with eight of its nine wins versus teams that defeated it last season. But the biggest similarity in the numbers starts with defense. The Eagles lead the Patriot League in scoring defense at 61.9 points per contest, with the Bison not far behind by allowing 65.0 points per game.

Patriot League Notebook 1,000-Point Scorers Coming Soon?No active Patriot League players have crossed the 1,000-point threshold, but that will likely change soon with a number of players getting ever closer to the mark. Lafayette senior Jared Mintz leads all active players with 969 points, which means he would hit the mark on Saturday against Holy Cross if he manages his season average of 16.4 points per game in the next two contests. The next player is a sophomore, as Lehigh’s C.J. McCollum is up to 939 career points. A trio of juniors in Holy Cross’ R.J. Evans (879), Colgate’s Yaw Gyawu (868) and Lafayette’s Ryan Willen (842) follows. An additional nine play-ers have 700 or more career points, and five in that group are also juniors.

More Statistical LeadersWhile Mintz is approaching the Patriot League record book, the active leaders in rebounding and assists already have their name in the charts. Holy Cross senior Andrew Keister has moved up to 20th in Patriot League history with 599 career rebounds, 47 away from making the top 10. Bucknell’s Darryl Shazier is 11th with 402 career assists, a mark that is 33 shy of the No. 10 position. Shazier passed the 400-assist plateau in Sunday’s win at Richmond. Right behind him is Navy senior O.J. Avworo, who is 20th in League annals with 333 assists.

Long-Range MarksmenTwo of the top three-point percentages in Patriot League history currently belong to players who are still making their mark on the court. Lafayette junior Jim Mower maintains the top spot all-time with a percentage of 43.6 (146-335) with Holy Cross senior Andrew Beinert slipping to fourth at 41.6 percent (151-of-363) from beyond the arc. Beinert also has the lead for three-pointers made among active Patriot League players.

Patriot League Teams Taking Tough LossesPatriot League teams are just 12-23 in games decided by five points or less this season, accounting for a third of the losses in an overall non-League mark of 48-69. Colgate, Navy and Holy Cross have been burned the most with four losses within five points. The Mids also own an eight-point overtime loss to Maryland-Eastern Shore, while all four of the Crusaders’ close losses were within three points. Bucknell, Lehigh and Lafayette and each have three losses by five points or less

Common OpponentsPatriot League teams played multiple common opponents and had a loaded schedule against certain conferences during the non-League portion of the schedule. Patriot League teams played five games against St. Francis (Pa.), with American, Lehigh and Lafayette all posting wins as the League went 3-2. The count is up to four games versus Dartmouth, as Army split a season series, Bucknell won at home and Colgate lost on the road. The Raiders will play the rubber match at home on Jan. 17. League squads went 3-0 against NJIT and combined for a 2-1 record against Binghamton, and have also played three games against New Hampshire, Wagner, Stony Brook, Long Island and Columbia, with a fourth to come against theLions this week. Two Patriot League squads have faced off against 18 different opponents, with a pair of squads so far beating Longwood, Marist, Cornell, Mount St. Mary’s and Brown. Most of those teams play in one of a handful of conferences where the Patriot League has faced off with numerous times this season. Patriot League teams have combined for seven games or more against five different leagues, with the top effort coming in a 4-3 record against the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC).

Patriot League on the WebThe Patriot League continues its extensive coverage of men’s basketball in the 2010-11 season. On the sidebar of the men’s basketball page, links are available to the 2010-11 Patriot League media guide, releases that are updated daily during the week and preview the weekend, daily recaps, news articles from around the League and any videos produced by the Patriot League multimedia staff, including content from Patriot League Men’s Basketball Media Day and the Patriot League’s “Road to the Championship” series.
