Excursions Being Organized
The following are to announce excursions being organized by member(s)that are
available to members and others
MAY 16-17 TRIP BEING PLANNED TO SEE AN UNSPOILED SLICE OF THAILAND
If you're interested in seeing a relatively unspoiled slice of traditional Thailand, join Pat Koester on a two-
day tour of Samut Songkram and Petchaburi provinces on those dates.
Samut Songkram, a farming area sometimes referred to as "the Venice of the Orient," is just southwest of
Bangkok, about a three-hour ride from Pattaya. The first day will include a klong (canal) boat tour, a visit
to a Thai temple with exquisite Thai crafts (mother of pearl, wood carving, etc.), a visit to a palm sugar
farm, and the Amphawa floating market. The second day will feature the Khao Luang Cave, which
consists of a number of caverns filled with beautifully illuminated golden Buddha images, several chedis
and many stalactites hanging from the ceiling; the Phra Ram Ratchaniwet Royal Palace, and a visit to an
artist community famous for Banjarong porcelain and bone china.
The cost of the trip, including an overnight stay at a three or four-star hotel on the river (double
occupancy) is 5,100 baht per person. If we have 38 people, one lucky PCEC member will win a free trip!
There will be an additional cost for a single room. If you are interested, please send Pat an email with the
subject line "Samut Songkram Tour" at [email protected], and she will send you
more information.

Club Announcements
The following announcements are of particular interest to Club members regarding Club activities and
benefits
A NEW CLUB LOGO COMING SOON
The Logo Committee presented their selected design from the many that
were submitted to the Board at their Sunday, March 9 meeting. The Board
approved the design and it is now in the hands of a graphic designer to
make a professional copy that is suitable to be placed on signs, banners,
website, etc. Many thanks to the Logo Selection Committee consisting of
Board members Pat Koester, Roy Albiston, and Lawrie McLoughlin plus
two members, Ian Frame, and Tom Loughney. Once the final copy is
received from the graphic designer, the Club’s new logo will be revealed to all, along with the
name of the person who submitted the winning design. The new logo will be published in the Club
Newsletter and presented at the next Club meeting following its completion by the graphics
designer. It will then be rolled out over the next few months on the Club’s website, Newsletter,
Banner, Signs, and other items.
REMINDER: TO BE ABLE TO VOTE DURING THE JULY ANNUAL GENERAL
MEETING, YOUR MEMBERSHIP MUST HAVE BEGAN ON OR BEFORE APRIL 1,
2014 – The Club’s Annual General Meeting will be on Sunday, July 6, 2014. The
terms of several Board members will be expiring. We will be announcing
procedures for making nominations for members to fill the vacancies in the near
future. If there are more candidates then there are vacancies, the By-Laws require
an election; BUT, in order to vote at the Annual General Meeting, Article III of the
By-Laws require that Club membership must have commenced on or before the
first day of April preceding the Annual General Meeting. To read the Club’s By-
Laws, click here.
INTERESTED IN TEACHING ENGLISH? The Teaching English Group
met March 11, 2014 and set the details of the program for the first session of
2014. The name of the group will be the Banglamung District Cross Cultural
Volunteer Group. Teaching will start after Songkran on April 21st, with 24
classes being held on Tuesday and Thursday of each week from 6 to 8pm
(except for holidays). Teaching will be free to Thai students. Classes will be
advertised by email and fax to about 29 companies and agencies in Pattaya,
There are three classroom locations under consideration by the Group. Teaching authorization
cards are being prepared by the Banglamung District Chief Officer. If you are interested in helping
with the teaching, please list yourself on the "Interested in Teaching English?" sign-up sheet, or
contact Richard at [email protected] or by phone at 089-244-9523.
CHANGES COMING TO THE NEWSLETTER – What with introducing a new
logo, perhaps it is time to do away with the old “full newsletter” that you have to
click on the button to see in the MailChimp generated newsletter. Darrel is working
on a template so that the Newsletter will be the email you receive – there will still
be some “clicking” involved if you want to “read more” about some of the items
that will be presented if the reader is interested in more information. We don’t have a firm target
date for the change over, but it should closely coincide with the roll out of the new logo.

PATTAYA CITY EXPATS CLUB NEWSLETTER March 14, 2014
Last Week’s Meeting
“Our mission was so top secret that we flew without uniforms or identification of any kind,” Mike
Cavanaugh said last Sunday when he told fellow club members the story of the “Ravens,” a group of
fighter pilots known as Forward Air Controllers (FACs) who flew small, propeller-driven airplanes during
the Vietnam War in an effort to disrupt the North Vietnamese supply lines along a portion of the Ho Chi
Minh trail that ran through Laos.
The North Vietnamese were using a corridor in Laos parallel to the Vietnamese border to move their
supplies because the demilitarized zone between North and South Viet Nam was simply too narrow (only
a couple of kilometres wide.)
The fighting in Laos involved the North Vietnamese Army and U.S., Lao, Thai, and South Vietnamese
forces directly and indirectly.
The reason the mission of the Ravens was so secret was that the U.S. had agreed at the 1962 Geneva
Conference to keep Laos neutral. At the time he was accepted, he knew he was volunteering for
something; but did not know what. He turned in his AF Uniform and ID information, was sent to a base in
Laos where they wore civilian clothing and black jump suits when flying with no identifying insignia. He
even lost his name, being identified as Raven 48 throughout his time there.
When Mike was flying his missions in 1969, near Long Thien in Laos, there were only eight ravens there
at the time.In all, there were about 150 Ravens. One-third were killed in battle; another third have since
died. Of the 50 or so Ravens still alive, Mike is the only one living in Southeast Asia. About 35 Ravens
attend a reunion that is held each year.
No Raven was ever captured.
Mike said that he was the first one to fly the T-28 aircraft, which the Ravens used on their missions. The
pilots flew very close to the ground. Mike said that he considered anyone who flew above him to be an
astronaut, and anyone who flew below him to be suicidal.
Mike said that on a typical day, he would get up before dawn, eat, fly a combat mission at dawn for three
hours in his armed T-28, come back for lunch, fly out again for four hours as a FAC in the O-1 Bird Dog,
come back for a one-hour break, and then fly again for three more hours – a total of 10 hours of flying in a
day.
Mike said that he flew more combat hours in one week than he had done in a month when he was on tour
in Viet Nam.(Mike volunteered for four tours of duty in Vietnam, Laos and Thailand.)
Mike said that the Ravens had to cook for themselves. But they got tired of this, so when visiting Udon
Royal Thai AFB, they “kidnapped” a cook of Mexican extraction and brought him back to do the cooking
which improved morale and pleased the cook, who enjoyed the lack of military officiousness. Mike
recounted that one morning the cook didn’t feel like making breakfast for him at the early hour he wanted
it prior to his morning mission. So Mike took him along in the cockpit of his plane when he went on that
morning’s mission. The next morning, the cook woke him with “how do you want your eggs?”.
The mission of the Ravens was to support indigenous forces in Laos in their fight against invading forces
from North Vietnam. In that context, Mike met and worked closely with General Vang Pao, the leader of
the Hmong forces in Laos that fought alongside the Royal Lao government against the communist Pathet

“secret war.”
Pao was recruited by the CIA in 1962. Mike said that the CIA picked the Hmong people to work with
because they were not directly connected to the Lao government. Mike described Pao as an “amazing
man.” When Pao’s son-in-law was shot down and killed, Mike was the one who had to break the news to
the General. Mike said that in 1975, when the Americans pulled out, they left the Hmong high and dry;
Pao was able to come to the USA where he lived and continued to be the leader of his Hmong people.
However, he was later indicted for violating the US Neutrality Act for doing what the US Government
had helped him do most of his career. Although the charges were later dismissed, he died of a broken
heart recently at age 81.
Today, the Hmong are remaining there are persecuted by the communist government of Laos. Mike said
that it was heartbreaking to leave so many of them behind, even though a lot of Hmong families were
resettled in the U.S. as was General Pao.
The story of the Ravens was told in a book by Christopher Robbins, “The Ravens: The Men Who Flew in
America’s Secret War in Laos.” The author has since died, as have five of the eight Ravens profiled in the
book. Mike is one of the remaining three. The book is now out of print.
The Ravens’ mission was so hush-hush that even the U.S. Air Force did not even know of their existence.
During one testy conversation Mike had with someone from the Air Force, the person said “I am going to
talk to your commander” – to which Mike replied, “Good! Let me know who he is!”
In 2003, Mike was one of four Ravens to participate in the making of a documentary on the Ravens.
Mike said he was an unorthodox officer who liked to do things his own way. He violated all the rules.
“There were rules we were supposed to follow, Mike said, but no one checked, so in practice there were
no rules. It was heaven!”
Referring to the Vietnam War, Mike said that it was simply “dumb” – “They knew where we were, but
we did not know where they were. In addition, we couldn’t fly at night time which is when the Viet Cong
and the North Vietnamese fought their war.”
Mike Cavanaugh was a Raven Forward Air Controller in Laos in 1969 and is now a retired U.S.Air
Force colonel, having left the air force in 1987. His decorations include the Silver Star, five Distinguished
Flying Crosses, Bronze Star, 28 Air Medals, and the Vietnam Combat Ribbon. Visit the Raven’s
organization website where the officially call themselves the Edgar Allan Poe Literary Society, Inc. at:
http://www.ravens.org. Visit here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OEqqB_4vH8E for a video of a T-
28 in action over Laos. For more history on the Ravens, visit
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raven_Forward_Air_Controllers where Wikipedia notes that: “The
screening system tended to select experienced Forward Air Controllers who were the most aggressive
available pilots for directing close air support, as well the least amenable to being restricted by
regulation.”

NOTE: These are activities organized by club member(s) and not by the PCEC. If they are operated
in accord with the Club’s adopted Activities Policy, the PCEC will facilitate their activities by
providing information at the meetings, on the website, and/or in the Newsletter.
Club Activities
The PCEC offers an opportunity for everyone to become involved in mid-week informal groups covering
many interests. If you have an interest or idea to start a new group, please discuss it with a member of the
Governing Board and we will help you publicize it. The groups usually meet as scheduled, but it is always
a good idea to contact the host to be sure of the date, time, and location.
GENEALOGY SPECIAL INTEREST GROUP (BUILDING A FAMILY TREE) -- Their aim is
to share information on how to go about building a family tree. Ian Frame is coordinating the Group.
The Group does not have regular meetings, but rather keeps up to date on their mutual interest
through distribution of a Newsletter. This newsletter aims to provide genealogy related articles,
historical photographs, and useful Internet links. Any member having genealogy related information
to share, or specific queries, merely forwards it to the Genealogy Newsletter by email to
[email protected]. Meetings will only be convened if members feel that there is a need to
address a specific issue.
RAISING AWARENESS GROUP – Meets Mondays at 1pm in the Markland’s 3rd garage floor

words with which you allow your life to be controlled – and how an understanding of the use of those
words can change your life, and people’s perception of you. If you have any questions about the
Group please contact Bruce at 080-053-6360, or by email at [email protected]. If you have
any questions about how to get to the Markland or the Meeting Room, please call Richard Smith at

A SOURCE IN BANGKOK FOR CPAP MACHINES USED TO TREAT SLEEP APNEA–
Positive airway pressure (PAP) is a mode of respiratory ventilation used primarily in the treatment
of sleep apnea, for which it was first developed. CPAP is an acronym for "continuous positive
airway pressure." If you have need of a machine or replacement machine, member David
Anderson advises that there is a supplier in Bangkok that can provide these machines at much less
than you would pay ordering them from a Hospital or from one of the major pharmacies that have
them. His understanding is that if you got your sleep study done here in Thailand, just have that
doctor call this Sales Manager and set up pickup or delivery. If you got your old machine in
another country; you may have to have a Thai doctor call in the request. The contact person is
