PATTERNS OF REGALIA AND JEWELS

This document sets out the patterns of Regalia, Aprons, Sashes, Jewels and Appurtenances as approved

by the Supreme Committee in accordance with Regulation 9.2(b).

DEFINITIONS AND EXPLANATIONS

The term ‘lambskin’ shall signify the same or a suitable type of white material. However, at

all times genuine lambskin is the preferred material.

The term ‘gold’ shall signify the same or a suitable type of gold-like material.

The term ‘silver’ shall signify the same or a suitable type of silver-like material.

The term ‘bronze’ shall signify the same or a suitable type of bronze-like material.

The term ‘ivory’ shall signify the same or a similar type of ivory-like material.

The term ‘mother of pearl’ shall signify the same or a suitable type of mother of pearl-like

material.

The specified width of the binding at the top edge of the Apron shall signify the total width of

the ribbon used, although only about half that width shall be visible from the front.

All ribbons used for Aprons, Sashes, Collars and Jewels may at times have small differences

in the patterns, this being due to the weaving of the same which the regalia suppliers receive

from overseas manufacturers. All measurements stated are approximate.

All breast jewels of the Order used at the investiture in each Degree may be worn by the

Companion who may wish to obtain his own jewels at his own expense.

Unless specified elsewhere in this document, all breast jewel ribbons shall be 38 mm wide.

SECTION 1

REGALIA FOR THE DEGREE OF MARK MASTER MASON

APRON:

To be of white lambskin, 400 mm wide and 355 mm long with a pointed flap 152 mm at the point.

The border along the sides and the bottom of the apron and of the flap to be of coloured ribbon being

crimson, light blue and crimson 50 mm wide on the apron and 38 mm wide on the flap. The binding at

the top edge of the Apron shall be of the same colours 38 mm wide. In the centre of the flap and in

each of the lower corners of the lambskin there shall be a rosette 50 mm in diameter being of ribbon the

same colour as the border of the apron, the button of the rosette being covered in light blue ribbon.

The Apron of an Installed Master or Past Master of a Lodge of Mark Master Masons shall be as above

except that the three rosettes shall be replaced by three silver taus (these may either be plain or have

superimposed upon them an appropriate emblem such as a Keystone of appropriate size). [PLATE

COLLAR OF OFFICE:

To be of ribbon of the same colours as the apron border, 100 mm wide with a silver cord and a beehive

in centre front, from which shall be suspended the appropriate Jewel of Office. [PLATE MM3]

JEWEL OF OFFICE:

The Jewel of Office shall be in every case a silver keystone and mounted thereon the appropriate

emblem of office (the whole Jewel to be not longer than 85 mm or wider than 60 mm at mid point) as

follows:

MARK BREAST JEWEL:

A Keystone of mother-of-pearl or ivory with a silver Lewis. On the obverse is space wherein may be

engraved the mark of the Brother, within an equilateral triangle, surrounded by a double circle bearing

the Hebrew characters as shown in the plate. On the reverse a double circle bearing the letters

H.T.W.S.S.T.K.S. The jewel shall be worn on the left breast pendent from a silver bar under which

shall be a ribbon of crimson, light blue and crimson which shall be 25 mm wide. In the centre of the

ribbon is displayed a chisel crossed with a mallet in silver. [PLATE MM20]

GAUNTLETS:

Gauntlets are to be of light blue material edged at each end in crimson 25 mm wide and trimmed with

silver braid 15 mm wide with the Jewel of Office as appropriate for the following Officers [example

MARK TOKEN:

To be a jewel of bronze, circular in shape on the reverse shall be displayed two circles within the outer

circle are the words “SON OF MAN MARK WELL”. Within the inner circle shall be displayed an

equilateral triangle on which shall be engraved the Mark of the Brother to whom the jewel is presented

together with the date of his advancement. On the obverse shall be displayed two circles, within the

inner circle an equilateral triangle, a keystone superimposed on it, in the centre of the keystone a circle

with the letters “H.T.W.S.S.T.K.S.” are engraved, a small circle and the equilateral triangle is displayed

also within. On the outer circle is engraved “United Supreme Grand Chapter of Mark and Royal Arch

Masons of New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory”. [PLATE MM22]

MARK MAN BREAST JEWEL:

The token may be worn on the left breast pendant from a ribbon in colour crimson, light blue and

crimson which shall be 25 mm wide. The crimson shall be 6 mm wide and the light blue shall be 13

mm wide. In the centre of the ribbon is displayed an hourglass in bronze. [PLATE MM23]

PAST MASTER’S BREAST JEWEL:

This jewel consists of a square, points downwards in gold from which shall be suspended a keystone

from the centre. The jewel shall be worn on the left breast pendent from a ribbon in colour crimson,

light blue and crimson which shall be 38 mm wide. The crimson shall be 9 mm wide and the light blue

shall be 20 mm wide. In the centre of the ribbon is displayed a chisel crossed with a mallet in gold.

Every Past First Principal of a subordinate Chapter is entitled to wear this jewel providing he has been

installed as the Worshipful Master of a Mark Masons Lodge. [PLATE MM24]

BATON OF OFFICE:

The Director of Ceremonies shall carry a baton made of polished wood or metal (all metal fittings are

to be in silver) on which shall be displayed his emblem of office in silver, viz.: crossed staves in saltire.

REGALIA FOR ALL BRETHREN PRESENT WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE

CANDIDATE:

The Master and all Officers present shall wear Mark Regalia. All other Brethren present shall wear

Mark Regalia, Excellent Master Regalia or Royal Arch Regalia.

APRON FOR DEGREE CANDIDATES:

During his Degree ceremony the Candidate is to wear a Fellowcraft Apron until his investiture. The

Candidate must be invested with the Mark Master Apron and Mark Breast Jewel at his investiture.

SECTION 2

REGALIA FOR THE DEGREE OF EXCELLENT MASTER

APRON:

To be of white lambskin from 400 mm wide 355 mm long, with a white pointed flap 152 mm at the

point. The border along the sides and on the bottom of the apron and the flap to be of crimson and

ribbon about 50 mm wide on the apron and about 29 mm wide on the flap. The binding at the top edge

of the apron shall be of crimson ribbon about 38 mm wide. Two gold tassels, suspended from crimson

ribbon 50 mm wide, to come from underneath the flap. The belt shall be white. In the centre of the

flap there shall be an embroidered five pointed interlaced star (or pentagram) in gold [PLATE EM1]

BREAST JEWEL:

The Jewel of this Degree is a five pointed interlaced star (or pentagram) in gold and it shall be worn on

the left breast pendent from a dark crimson ribbon 38 mm wide. [PLATE EM2]

REGALIA FOR ALL BRETHREN PRESENT WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE

CANDIDATE:

Irrespective of whether the subordinate Chapter shall have originally opened in the Mark Master Mason

Degree or in the Royal Arch Degree: the Worshipful and Excellent Master, all Officers and all

Companions present shall wear Royal Arch Regalia (note: the Excellent First Principal and Associate

Principals do not wear their robes or crowns nor carry their sceptres in this Degree). Those Brethren

present who have been received into the Degree of Excellent Master but have not yet been exalted to

the Degree of the Holy Royal Arch shall wear Excellent Master Regalia.

APRON FOR DEGREE CANDIDATES:

The Candidate must wear a Mark Master Mason Apron throughout the ceremony until invested with

Excellent Master Regalia.

SECTION 3

REGALIA FOR THE DEGREE OF THE HOLY ROYAL ARCH

APRON:

To be of white lambskin from 400 mm wide 355 mm long, with a white pointed flap 152 mm at the

point. The border along the sides and on the bottom of the apron and the flap to be of indented crimson

and purple ribbon, with the crimson points to the centre, about 50 mm wide on the apron and about 29

mm wide on the flap. The binding at the top edge of the apron shall be of white ribbon about 38 mm

wide. Two gold tassels, suspended from white ribbon 50 mm wide, to come from underneath the flap.

The belt shall be white. In the centre of the flap there shall be an equilateral triangle and within the

triangle the triple tau, all in gold, surmounted on a white background. [PLATE RA1]

The aprons of Principals and Past Principals shall be the same as above except that the apron binding,

the tassel ribbons, the background of the equilateral triangle and the belt shall all be crimson. [PLATE

RA2]

PRINCIPAL’S APRON EMBLEM:

Optional: In the centre of the Apron may be a circled emblem in crimson coloured cloth on which are

two concentric circles, in gold thread. Within the inner circle an equilateral triangle and within the

triangle the jewel of a Principal, i.e. Crown for the First, a Radiated Eye for the Second and the

Breastplate for the Third. Within the outer circle the name of the Chapter, its Number and the initials

‘U.S.G.C.” are to be displayed. The Apron emblem for Past Principals shall be as above together with

a laurel wreath surrounding the appropriate emblem, all in gold thread. The emblem may be part of a

badge that is attached to the Apron, or it may be woven directly into the Apron. [PLATE RA3]

SASH:

To be 920 mm in length, worn over the left shoulder and passing obliquely to the right side which shall

be of the usual Royal Arch style, being crimson diamonds on a purple background 100 mm wide. At

the lower end of the sash shall be a triple tau within an equilateral triangle, both in gold, on a white

background below which shall be a crimson and purple fringe 75 mm long. [PLATE RA4]

The sash of Principals and Past Principals shall be the same as above except that the background of the

equilateral triangle shall be crimson and the fringe below shall be gold 75 mm long. [PLATE RA5]

COLLAR OF OFFICE:

To be of crimson ribbon, 100 mm wide with a gold cord and beehive in centre front, from which shall

be suspended the Jewel of Office. [PLATE RA6]

JEWEL OF OFFICE:

The Jewel of Office shall be an equilateral triangle and mounted within the triangle, all in gold, will be

the appropriate emblem of office (the whole Jewel to be not longer than 55 mm nor wider than 50 mm)

as follows:

In the centre of each breastplate shall be the Hebrew word in gold

(Ref.: Exodus Ch. 39 v. 10 – 13)

BREAST JEWEL:

The breast jewel of the Order shall be of the design depicted on [PLATE RA23] in gold. It shall be

worn from the left breast pendent from a ribbon 38 mm wide, the colour of which shall be crimson for

Principals and Past Principals and white for all other Companions. The jewel consists of the Seal of

Solomon within a circle and within the seal itself a design peculiar to the Degree. On the various

diagonals of the Seal on both the obverse and reverse are certain inscriptions as detailed in the diagram

accompanying the plate. On the obverse the Companion’s name may be engraved on the vacant

diagonal; on the reverse the date of the Companion’s exaltation may be inscribed on the vacant ribbon

at the bottom right of the jewel.

ROBES OF OFFICE:

The three Principals, the Scribes and the Sojourners shall wear robes of office which shall be the

property of the Chapter. For the First Principal the robe shall be crimson colour trimmed with ermine

or crimson satin, for the Second Principal the robe shall be purple edged with gilt lace or purple satin

and for the Third Principal the robe shall be sky blue trimmed with sky blue satin. [PLATE RA24]

The Scribes and Sojourners shall wear robes of white linen which may be trimmed with the colour of

their rank, viz.: Scribes – red; First Sojourner – crimson; Second Sojourner – purple; Third Sojourner –

sky blue. [PLATE RA25]

OTHER CLOTHING AND ROBES OF OFFICE:

The Third Principal may wear a white coat being the same in length as the robe, a white cord and an

Ephod, all made of linen or cloth. The Ephod shall be coloured from within crimson, purple, blue and

trimmed with gold at the edges. A girdle or cord of the same colours as the Ephod shall be worn. A

breastplate made of cloth or metal which shall have two or four loops, for attachment of a chain or cord

to suspend the gold breastplate which shall have on it the twelve coloured plates being the same as in

the Jewel of Office. On the reverse of the breastplate two slots are provided for the insertion of the

Urim and Thummin, both being of gold. [PLATE RA26]

PRINCIPALS’ HEADWEAR (OPTIONAL):

The Principals may wear crowns or caps being made of metal and cloth, the colours of which shall be

the same as their respective robes (alternatively, the Third Principal’s cap may be in the shape of a sky

blue mitre and edged in gold). A gold metal plate which is to be in shape as rim of the mitre and which

can be fixed to it, on which is written “HOLINESS TO THE LORD”. [PLATE RA27]

Note: The wearing of headwear is option. Headwear shall only be worn if all crowns and caps are in

good repair and shall only be worn if disposable inserts or liners are available.

SCEPTRES, RODS AND BATONS OF OFFICE:

The Principals shall each have a sceptre or rod made of polished wood or metal, on the head of which

shall be displayed their respective emblem of office, viz.: First Principal – a crown; Second Principal –

a radiated eye; Third Principal – a mitre. [PLATE RA28]

The Director of Ceremonies shall carry a baton made of polished wood or metal (all metal fittings are

to be in gold) on which shall be displayed his emblem of office in gold, viz.: crossed staves in saltire.

Sojourners shall carry batons made of polished wood or metal. The batons may be in colour in part to

designate their respective offices, viz.: First Sojourner – crimson; Second Sojourner – purple; Third

Sojourner – sky blue. [PLATE RA30]

PAST FIRST PRINCIPAL’S BREAST JEWEL:

The jewel shall be of the following design: a flat metal base circular in shape on which is an equilateral

triangle, a crown being on its centre the whole being surrounded by a laurel wreath, all in gold. The

crown may have red stones set in its points. The jewel shall be worn on the left breast pendent from a

crimson ribbon 38 mm wide. The ribbon may have on it the three Principals’ sceptres in gold, from top

to bottom: From top to bottom First then Second then Third. [PLATE RA31]. Subordinate Chapters

may vary the jewel by substituting the standard design with an appropriate design peculiar to the

Chapter concerned. [example PLATE RA31A] Every Past First Principal of a subordinate Chapter is

entitled to wear this jewel. If such a jewel is worn the usual Companion’s breast jewel is not worn.

REGALIA FOR ALL COMPANIONS PRESENT WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE

CANDIDATE:

The Principals, all Officers and all Companions present shall wear Royal Arch Regalia.

APRON FOR DEGREE CANDIDATES:

The Candidate must wear a Mark Master Mason Apron or (preferably) an Excellent Master Apron until

invested with Royal Arch Regalia. If there is more than one Candidate then all Candidates must wear

the same regalia (i.e. all wear Mark Master Aprons or all wear Excellent Master Aprons).

SECTION 4

REGALIA FOR THE DEGREE OF ROYAL ARK MARINER

APRON:

To be of white lambskin 400 mm wide and 355 mm long with a semicircular flap 150 mm at the centre.

The border along the sides and the bottom of the apron and of the flap to be of rainbow coloured

ribbon, 50 mm wide on the apron and 30 mm wide on the flap. The binding at the top edge of the

apron shall be of the same colours 38 mm wide. In the centre of the flap, and in each of the lower

corners of the lambskin, there shall be a rosette 50 mm in diameter of rainbow coloured ribbon.

The apron of a Worshipful Commander Noah or Past Worshipful Commander Noah shall be the same

as above, except that one rosette in the centre of the flap shall be replaced by an emblem of a triangle,

and within it two pillars with a rainbow between them to form the letter “N”, all in gold, the formed

letter “N” should be 30 mm by 25 mm. [PLATE AM2] The emblem for a Past Worshipful

Commander Noah is the same but should be surrounded by a laurel wreath. [PLATE AM3]

SASH:

To be 920 mm in length, worn over the right shoulder and passing obliquely to the left side, shall be of

rainbow coloured ribbon 100 mm wide. At the lower end of the sash resting as near as possible to the

left hip shall be a rosette of rainbow coloured ribbon, below which shall be a gold fringe 75 mm long.

The sash of a Worshipful Commander Noah or Past Worshipful Commander Noah shall be the same

except that the appropriate emblem specified for the apron shall replace the rosette. [PLATES AM5

and AM6].

To be of rainbow coloured ribbon 100 mm wide with a gold cord and beehive in centre front, from

which shall be suspended the Jewel of Office. [PLATE AM7]

JEWEL OF OFFICE:

The Jewel of Office shall be an equilateral triangle and mounted within, all in gold, the appropriate

emblem of office (the whole Jewel to be not longer than 55 mm or wider than 50 mm) as set out

hereunder:

* The Jewel of Office for a Deacon is therefore an equilateral triangle without any additional emblem.

If an equilateral triangle is unavailable a dove within an equilateral triangle may be substituted in its

place.

¶ If an axe is unavailable an unsheathed sword pointing upwards may be substituted in its place.

BREAST JEWEL:

The jewel consists of a representation of Noah’s Ark surmounted by a rainbow and a dove carrying an

olive branch in its beak, all in gold. The jewel shall be worn on the left breast pendent from a rainbow

coloured ribbon 38 mm wide. [PLATE AM21]

PAST WORSHIPFUL COMMANDER NOAH’S BREAST JEWEL:

The jewel shall be of the design of a flat metal base, circular in shape, on which shall be the letter “N”

within an equilateral superimposed with a crown, the whole surrounded by a laurel wreath all in gold.

The jewel shall be worn on the left breast pendent from a rainbow coloured ribbon 38 mm wide.

[PLATE AM22] This jewel may be worn by any Excellent Companion who has been the First Principal

of a subordinate Chapter, who has been installed in the chair of Worshipful Commander Noah and who

has actually worked the Degree as Worshipful Commander Noah whether in his own Chapter or at the

invitation of another Chapter.

WORSHIPFUL COMMANDER NOAH’S SCEPTRE (OPTIONAL):

The sceptre of a Worshipful Commander Noah shall be approximately 250mm long, about 25mm in

diameter and to be surmounted by an equilateral triangle or tetrahedron (which may be of skeleton

form) with a side length of approximately 25mm and the apex pointing upwards. [PLATE AM23]

REGALIA FOR THE DEGREE OF KNIGHT OF THE RED CROSS OF BABYLON

REGALIA FOR THE THIRD POINT (KNIGHT OF THE EAST AND WEST)

APRON:

To be of white lambskin 400 mm wide and 355 mm long with a pointed flap 162 mm at the point. The

border along the sides and on the bottom of the apron and the flap to be of dark crimson coloured

ribbon, 50 mm wide on the apron and 38 mm wide on the flap. The binding at the top edge of the

apron shall be of dark crimson coloured ribbon 38 mm wide. In the centre of the flap and in each

corner of the lambskin there shall be a rosette 50 mm in diameter being of green coloured ribbon.

Falling from the right hand side of the flap shall be a small trowel suspended from a chain, both in

The apron of a Most Excellent Chief or Past Most Excellent Chief shall be the same as above, except

that the rosette in the centre of the flap shall be replaced by a seven pointed star, in gold, with a circular

enamelled green centre and, within this, a white equilateral triangle with gold crossed unsheathed

SASH:

To be 920 mm in length, worn over the left shoulder and passing obliquely to the right side, of dark

crimson coloured ribbon 100 mm wide. At the lower end of the sash shall be a green coloured rosette

COLLAR OF OFFICE:

To be of dark crimson ribbon, 100 mm wide with a gold cord and beehive in centre front, from which

To be of watered green coloured ribbon 100 mm wide. The Jewel of Office should not be attached to

the collar, unless the collar is two sided (dark crimson on one side, watered green on the other) and the

Jewel of Office cannot easily be removed in which case the Jewel of Office may remain attached to the

CANDIDATE’S CORDON:

Candidates should be invested with a watered green ribbon or cordon 2000 mm in length and 100 mm

wide, which is not permanently joined together (although a ‘quick release’ attachment such as Velcro is

CANDIDATE’S WAIST SASH:

Candidates should be invested with a watered pale green ribbon or cordon approximately 920 mm in

length and100 mm wide, which is not joined together and has no jewel attached and is capable of being

The jewel is a seven-pointed star, in gold, with a circular enamelled green centre with gold crossed

unsheathed swords pointing upwards. The jewel is worn from the left breast pendent from a dark

Alternatively a dark crimson ribbon with a green margin upon which are embroidered crossed swords

in gold may be attached to the button hole on the left breast. This alternate ribbon is not to be used as

part of a Candidate’s regalia.

MOST EXCELLENT CHIEF’S BREAST JEWEL:

The jewel is a gold Eastern Crown of five points beneath which is a seven-pointed star, in gold, with a

circular enamelled green centre and, within this, a gold equilateral triangle within which on a

background of white enamel are two further equilateral triangles one inside the other in gold

surmounted overall with crossed unsheathed swords pointing upwards also in gold. The jewel is worn

from the left breast pendent from a dark crimson ribbon 38 mm wide. [PLATE RCK25] Any Excellent

Companion who is the First Principal of a subordinate Chapter and who has been installed in the chair

of Most Excellent Chief may wear this jewel whilst he is working this Degree.

PAST MOST EXCELLENT CHIEF’S BREAST JEWEL:

The jewel is a gold Eastern Crown of five points beneath which is a seven-pointed star, in gold, with a

circular enamelled green centre and, within this on a gold background are three gold equilateral

triangles arranged as for the jewel of Most Excellent Chief surmounted overall with crossed unsheathed

swords pointing upwards also in gold, the whole surrounded by a laurel wreath in gold. The jewel is

worn from the left breast pendent from a dark crimson ribbon 38 mm wide. [PLATE RCK26] This

jewel may be worn by any Excellent Companion who has been the First Principal of a subordinate

Chapter, who has been installed in the chair of Most Excellent Chief and who has actually worked this

Degree as Most Excellent Chief whether in his own Chapter or at the invitation of another Chapter.

SWORD AND SWORD BELT:

Plain court sword with a red scabbard and gold or bronze fittings. Sword belt is to be of red leather

with gold or bronze fittings. [PLATE RCK27]

LANCE or SPEAR:

The pattern of lance or spear shall be at each subordinate Chapter’s discretion. The tip of the lance or

spear may be of metal or wood provided always that edges and point are blunt. The lance or spear shall

be of an overall length approximately equivalent to a Craft Deacon’s wand. [PLATE RCK28]

REGALIA FOR ALL KNIGHTS PRESENT WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE CANDIDATE:

For the First Point and the Second Point the Most Excellent Chief and all Officers present shall only

wear the Regalia specified for those Points. All other Knights present shall wear either Red Cross

Knights Regalia or Royal Arch Regalia.

For the Third Point and when opening and closing a Council of Knights of the East and West the Most

Excellent Chief and all Officers present shall wear Red Cross Knights Regalia. All other Knights

present shall wear either Red Cross Knights Regalia or Royal Arch Regalia.

REGALIA FOR DEGREE CANDIDATES:

For the First Point: Royal Arch Regalia shall be worn. For the Second Point: a Royal Arch Apron

shall be worn (the Sash having been removed during the ceremony) and a Sword. For the Third Point:

a Royal Arch Apron, the Candidate’s Waist Sash and a Sword shall be worn until invested with Red

The apron of a Thrice Illustrious Master or Past Thrice Illustrious Master shall be the same as above,

but in the centre of the apron shall be a small trowel (point of the trowel towards sinister base)

superimposed on compasses extended to 60° [PLATE CD2] (Alternatively, the central device may be

an equilateral triangle upon which is mounted a trowel (point downwards), all in gold. [PLATE

PAST THRICE ILLUSTRIOUS MASTER’S BREAST JEWEL:

The jewel consists of a skeleton equilateral triangle surmounted by an imperial crown, at the apex a

trowel (with point downwards) on a flat circle of laurel wreath. Mounted on the trowel a square with

superimposed compasses, all in gold. The jewel is worn from the left breast pendent from a dark

crimson ribbon 38 mm wide. [PLATE CD19] This jewel may be worn by any Excellent Companion

who has been the First Principal of a subordinate Chapter, who has been installed in the chair of Thrice

Illustrious Master and who has actually worked all four Degrees as Thrice Illustrious Master whether in

his own Chapter or at the invitation of another Chapter(s).

SWORD AND SWORD BELT:

Plain court sword with a red scabbard and gold fittings. Sword belt is to be of red leather with gold

TROWELS:

The pattern(s) of trowels shall be at each subordinate Chapter’s discretion. While the blade of the

SUBORDINATE CHAPTERS - MISCELLANEOUS

MINIATURE JEWELS OF THE DEGREES (OPTIONAL)

Every Companion who shall have taken the Degrees in the Royal Arch series may wear the miniature

jewels of that series. Every Companion who shall have taken the Degrees in the Lodge and Council

and in the Cryptic Council series may wear the miniature jewels of that series. These jewels are to be

the same as the breast jewels as covered in Sections One to Six. The miniature jewels may be worn

either with the Royal Arch series jewels shall be on one bar and the Lodge and Council and in the

Cryptic Council series jewels shall be on another bar, or all the miniature jewels may be worn on the

same bar. Miniature jewels are to be worn on the sash of the Royal Arch near the left shoulder.

UNITED SUPREME GRAND CHAPTER NECK TIES

Either the Grand Chapter’s original neck tie (1st pattern) [PLATE TIE1] or current neck tie (2

nd pattern)

[PLATE TIE2] is the appropriate neck tie to be worn with a suit when attending any meeting of Grand

Chapter or any subordinate Chapter (irrespective of the Degree being worked).

REGALIA FOR GRAND CHAPTER OFFICERS – PAST AND PRESENT

(EXCLUDING GRAND MARK REGALIA)

APRONS, SASHES AND ROBES

APRONS:

To be of white lambskin 400 mm wide and 355 mm long with a pointed flap 162 mm at the point. The

border along the sides and on the bottom of the apron to be of indented ribbon of the usual Royal Arch

pattern (being crimson diamonds on a purple background) 100 mm wide. The border of the flap to be

of indented ribbon of the usual Royal Arch pattern 50 mm wide with purple points to the centre. Gold

lace 15 mm wide to be on the inside and outside edge of the borders of both apron and flap. There will

be a gold fringe around the outer edge of the apron and flap between 35 mm and 50 mm in length. The

binding at the top of the apron shall be crimson ribbon 38 mm wide. Two gold tassels, suspended from

crimson ribbon 50 mm to come from underneath the flap. In the centre of the flap there shall be an

equilateral triangle, and within the triangle the triple tau, all in gold, placed on a crimson background.

In the centre of the apron shall be a Grand Officer’s apron emblem being a gold circle with an outer

diameter of 70 mm and an inner diameter of 45 mm, within the outer edge of the circle a gold

equilateral triangle 5 mm to 7 mm wide and within the outer edge of the triangle a white enamel

keystone, the last two on a circular crimson background within the inner edge of the circle. On the

circle the words “UNITED SUPREME GRAND CHAPTER – N.S.W. AND THE A.C.T” and on the

keystone, in a circle, the letters “H.T.W.S.S.T.K.S.”. All Grand Chapter aprons (with the exception of

those provided for Grand Stewards) are personal property. [PLATE GC1] [For Grand Officer’s apron

For Grand Stewards the apron shall not have any gold lace or any gold fringe on any part of the apron.

Grand Stewards aprons shall be and at all times remain the property of the United Supreme Grand

Chapter. [PLATE GC2]

For Grand Chapter Officers and Past Grand Chapter Officers who are not Past Principals the binding at

the top of the apron, the ribbon suspending the gold tassels and the background of the equilateral

triangle on the central flap of the apron shall be white instead of crimson. [PLATE GC2A]

SASHES:

To be 920 mm in length worn over the left shoulder and passing obliquely to the right side. It shall be

of the same pattern, colour and width as the border of the apron with gold lace 16 mm wide running

along the centre. At the lower end of the sash shall be a triple tau within an equilateral triangle, both in

gold, on a crimson background below which shall be a gold fringe 75 mm long. [PLATE GC3]

For Grand Chapter Officers and Past Grand Chapter Officers who are not Past Principals the

background of the equilateral triangle shall be white. [PLATE GC4]

The sash of the First Grand Principal and Grand Master and the Pro-First Grand Principal and Grand

Master shall be tri-coloured from within light blue, crimson and purple 100 mm wide and with gold

lace 16 mm wide running along the centre. At the lower end of the sash shall be a triple tau within an

equilateral triangle, both in gold, on a crimson background below which shall be a gold fringe 75 mm

The sash of the a Past First Grand Principal and Grand Master and a Past Pro-First Grand Principal and

Grand Master who shall have served in either or those offices shall be the same as that for the First

Grand Principal and Grand Master. The sash for the conferred rank of Past First Grand Principal and

Grand Master shall be the same as that for the First Grand Principal and Grand Master but without gold

lace running along the centre of the sash. [PLATE GC5A]

The sash of the Deputy First Grand Principal and Deputy Grand Master shall be 920 mm in length

worn over the left shoulder and passing obliquely to the right side. It shall be of the same pattern,

colour and width as the border of the apron with gold lace 16 mm wide running along the centre and

The sash of a Past Deputy First Grand Principal and Deputy Grand Master who has served in that office

shall be identical to that of the Deputy First Grand Principal and Deputy Grand Master. The sash for

the conferred rank of Past Deputy First Grand Principal and Deputy Grand Master shall be the same but

without gold lace running along the centre of the sash. [PLATE GC6A]

All Grand Chapter sashes (with the exception of those provided for Grand Stewards) are personal

property. Sashes provided for Grand Stewards sashes shall be and at all times remain the property of

the United Supreme Grand Chapter.

ROBES OF OFFICE:

The Grand Principals shall wear robes of office which shall be the property of the United Supreme

Grand Chapter.

For the First Grand Principal and Grand Master and Pro-First Grand Principal and Grand Master the

robe shall be of crimson colour trimmed with ermine around the collar and down the border of the robe

and also on the cuffs of the sleeves. On the shoulders shall be small rings or studs, one on each

shoulder, for attaching the chain of office. [PLATE GC7]

For the Deputy First Grand Principal and Deputy Grand Master the robe shall be of crimson colour

trimmed with ermine around the collar and down the border of the robe. The cuffs of the sleeves shall

be trimmed in crimson silk. On the shoulders shall be small rings or studs, one on each shoulder, for

attaching the chain of office. [PLATE GC8]

For the Second Grand Principal and the Third Grand Principal the robes shall be of the same design as

for the First Grand Principal and Grand Master, save that for the Second Grand Principal the robe shall

be of purple colour [PLATE GC9] and for the Third Grand Principal it shall be sky blue colour

[PLATE GC10]. On the shoulders shall be small rings or studs, one on each shoulder, for attaching the

chain of office.

CHAINS AND COLLARS OF OFFICE

CHAINS:

The First Grand Principal and Grand Master, a Past First Grand Principal and Grand Master, the Pro-

First Grand Principal and Grand Master, a Past Pro-First Grand Principal and Grand Master, the

Deputy First Grand Principal and Deputy Grand Master, a Past Deputy First Grand Principal and

Deputy Grand Master, Assistant Grand Principals, the Second Grand Principal, the Third Grand

Principal and the Grand Director of Ceremonies shall each wear a chain of office. The chains of office

of Assistant Grand Principals, the Second Grand Principal, the Third Grand Principal and the Grand

Director of Ceremonies shall be and at all times remain the property of the United Supreme Grand

Chapter: all other chains of office are the personal property of the holders of those ranks.

FIRST GRAND PRINCIPAL AND GRAND MASTER’S / DEPUTY FIRST GRAND

PRINCIPAL AND DEPUTY GRAND MASTER’S CHAIN OF OFFICE:

The chain of office for the First Grand Principal and Grand Master, a Past First Grand Principal and

Grand Master, Pro-First Grand Principal and Grand Master, Past Pro-First Grand Principal and Grand

Master, Deputy First Grand Principal and Deputy Grand Master, Past Deputy First Grand Principal and

Deputy Grand Master, shall be backed by tri-coloured ribbon, from within light blue, crimson and

purple 50 mm wide, and to be constructed of gold links of the following design and joined in the

sequence indicated:

collarette jewel of special design suspended from a gold chain. Both the collarette jewel and chain are

SUPREME COMMITTEE JEWEL:

All current members of Supreme Committee shall wear the jewel which shall be of a circular shape 46

mm in diameter with a flat base in gold. On the obverse within a circle on a light blue background 35

mm in diameter the emblem of the Order above which is a radiated Ark of the Covenant all in gold.

Below the emblem on a saltire purple ribbon is the Motto of the Order “AD MAJOREM DEI

GLORIAM” all in gold. In the outer circle is the name of the Order in gold on a crimson background

11 mm wide. The jewel shall be suspended from a tri-coloured collarette ribbon from within light blue,

crimson and purple 25 mm wide. The jewel and collarette ribbon shall be and at all times remain the

GRAND CHAPLAIN:

The jewel shall be of a circular shape 33 mm in diameter with a flat base in gold. On the obverse on a

crimson background the emblem and name of the Order all in gold. The jewel shall be suspended from

a white collarette ribbon 25 mm wide. The jewel and the collarette ribbon shall be and at all times

PAST GRAND CHAPLAINS AND EMERITUS GRAND CHAPLAINS:

collarette ribbon 25 mm wide, running along the centre of the ribbon a strip of gold Russia Braid 3 mm

GRAND LECTURERS:

The jewel shall be of a circular shape 46 mm in diameter with a flat base in gold. On the obverse

within a circle on a semi-dark green background 35 mm in diameter an equilateral triangle in white

edged in gold, in the centre of which a flaming torch in white edged and trimmed in gold. On each side

of the outer edge of the triangle are the words “Grand Chapter Lecturer” in gold. The jewel shall be

suspended from a dark green collarette ribbon 25 mm wide. The jewel and the collarette ribbon shall

be and at all times remain the property of the United Supreme Grand Chapter. [PLATE GC53]

PAST GRAND LECTURERS:

The jewel shall be the same as for Grand Lecturers. The jewel shall be suspended from a dark green

collarette ribbon 25 mm wide, running along the centre of the ribbon a strip of gold Russia Braid 3 mm

REPRESENTATIVES OF THE UNITED SUPREME GRAND CHAPTER NEAR OTHER

GRAND BODIES:

The jewel shall be the same as for Grand Chaplains. The jewel shall be suspended from an indented

crimson and blue (crimson points towards the centre) collarette ribbon 29 mm wide. The jewel and the

collarette ribbon shall be and at all times remain the property of the United Supreme Grand Chapter.

Representatives of other Grand Bodies who have been issued with a breast or collar jewel by their

respective Grand Body may wear such jewel with Grand Chapter Regalia.

MARK AND ROYAL ARCH DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD:

The jewel shall be circular 40 mm in diameter of gold. On the obverse shall be a concentric circle

made of a laurel wreath which is tied with two saltire ribbons at the bottom. An equilateral triangle is

in the centre of the circle and within the triangle are the Arms of the Order. Over the top of the triangle

is a saltire ribbon on which is the Motto of the Order “AD MAJOREM DEI GLORIAM”. In the centre

Crown. Within the centre of the two saltire ribbons at the bottom is the triple tau, and written on them

the words “SERVICE AWARD” and above these is another saltire ribbon on which is written the word

“DISTINGUISHED”.

On the reverse is engraved or stamped the name of the recipient and the date of the award. The jewel is

suspended from a dark crimson collarette ribbon 25 mm wide. The jewel and the collarette ribbon are

CHAPTER CYRUS 2013 MEMBERSHIP JEWEL (worn as a collarette jewel):

All current and past members of Chapter Cyrus 2013 shall wear the jewel which shall be oval in shape

60 mm in length and 45 mm in width in gold. On the obverse within a red border 2 mm in width shall

be in relief a representation in black and white of the mosaic pavement bounded in gold on three sides

by a low stone wall at the far end of which is a Royal Arch altar inscribed with the initials on three

lines “SKI / HKT / HAB” supporting a Volume of the Sacred Law on which is placed the Square and

Compasses. At the front of the stone walls the facing blocks are finished with, in dexter, the Seal of

Solomon in the centre of which is a triple tau whilst on the other, in sinister, is a pentagram with a point

at its centre. Supported by the two facing blocks are two Corinthian columns (including entablature),

one on either side, which in turn support blocks of stone forming an arch bearing in turn the following

signs of the zodiac and designs (from dexter to sinister): Capricorn (a goat), Aquarius (a water bearer),

Pisces (two fish), Aires (a ram standing), Taurus (a bull), Gemini (a pair of twins), a Keystone bearing

the inscription within a circle “HTWSSTKS”, Cancer (a crab), Leo (a lion passant), Virgo (a maiden

reclining), Libra (a pair of scales), Scorpio (a scorpion), and Sagittarius (an archer kneeling). Under

the arch and between the columns is a red triple tau within an open red equilateral triangle (point

upwards) which is in turn within a red circle. At the base of the jewel and below the above design shall

be the emblems of the three series of Degrees worked by Chapter Cyrus 2013, namely (from dexter to

sinister) Royal Ark Mariner, Cryptic and Red Cross Knights. Within the red border at the top shall be

the words “CHAPTER CYRUS 2013” in gold. At the base of the jewel underneath the outer border

shall be on a gold scroll with the words “FOUNDATION MEMBER” in re for those Companions

entitled to the same. The jewel shall be suspended from a dark blue ribbon edged maroon 25 mm wide.

The jewel and collarette ribbon are personal property (the recipient’s name is usually inscribed on the

BREAST JEWELS

SUPREME COMMITTEE LONG SERVICE JEWEL:

Any Member of Supreme Committee who has served as a Member of Supreme Committee for a term

of not less than 9 years may, on ceasing to serve on Supreme Committee, retain the Supreme

Committee jewel as his personal property (the collarette ribbon is to be returned to the United Supreme

Grand Chapter) and the jewel shall then be worn from the left breast pendent from a tri-coloured ribbon

from within light blue, crimson and purple 38 mm wide. The jewel is personal property. [PLATE

EGYPTIAN ROOM JEWEL:

Members of the District Grand Chapter of New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory

(Scottish Constitution) who prior to 1980 had contributed towards the fund for the restoration of the

Egyptian Room at Petersham and who had been issued with a breast jewel to acknowledge their

contribution may continue to wear such jewel. The jewel is personal property. [PLATE GC58]

UNITED SUPREME GRAND CHAPTER’S FOUNDATION MEMBER’S JEWEL:

Companions who on 18 October 1980 were members of a Chapter holding under the United Supreme

Grand Chapter and who had obtained a Foundation Member’s jewel may continue to wear such jewel.

MARK AND ROYAL ARCH ORDER OF MERIT AWARD:

The jewel shall be circular 40 mm in diameter of silver. On the obverse shall be an Arch on a

tessellated pavement, a radiant eye and an Altar in the centre of the pavement. Over the top of the Arch

is a saltire ribbon on which is the Motto of the Order “AD MAJOREM DEI GLORIAM”. In the centre

of the ribbon an open Bible with the square and compasses lying upon it. Around the Arch are four

jewels of the Order, on the left being “E.M. and R.A.M” and on the right “CRYPTIC and R.C.K.”. On

the outside is a concentric circle within which are the words “UNITED SUPREME GRAND

CHAPTER”. On the top and bottom of the circle are four saltire ribbons on which are the words

“ROYAL ARCH” in the top and “ORDER OF MERIT” in the bottom. Between the top ribbon is a

crown and between the bottom ribbon is a circle superimposed on which is an equilateral triangle and

within the triangle is the triple tau. On the reverse is engraved or stamped a sequential number (e.g.

10), the name of the recipient and the date of the award. The jewel is worn from the left breast pendent

from a dark crimson ribbon 38 mm wide. The jewel is personal property. [PLATE GC60]

CHAPTER CYRUS 2013 MEMBERSHIP JEWEL (worn as a breast jewel):

All current and past members of Chapter Cyrus 2013 who are prevented from wearing the membership

jewel as a neck jewel (by reason, for example, of being required to wear the Mark and Royal Arch

Distinguished Service Award collarette jewel) shall be entitled to wear the Chapter Cyrus 2013 jewel

from the left breast pendant from a dark blue ribbon edged maroon 38 mm wide. The jewel is personal

property.

MARK AND ROYAL ARCH SERVICE AWARD:

There is no jewel prescribed for this Award.

BARS TO BREAST JEWELS AND LAPEL BADGES

50 YEARS OF MEMBERSHIP:

Companions who have achieved 50 years of membership of the Order may wear on the ribbon of their

Royal Arch jewel a gold bar 40 mm x 9 mm with a 1 mm blue internal border and in the centre on a red

enamelled circle surrounded by a laurel wreath in gold the figures “50” superimposed and on the bar in

blue the words “Member” (left) and “Years” (right). The bar is personal property. (The United

Supreme Grand Chapter on application by qualified Companions or by Scribes Ezra on their behalves

GRAND OFFICER’S LAPEL BADGE:

A lapel badge showing the office held by the wearer may be worn on the left lapel by serving Grand

Chapter Officers at Festive Boards and on other social occasions. Lapel badges are not to be worn in

the Chapter Room. Lapel badges shall be and at all times remain the property of the United Supreme

REGALIA FOR ALL COMPANIONS AND BRETHREN PRESENT AT GRAND CHAPTER

CONVOCATIONS:

All invested Grand Chapter Officers shall wear Grand Chapter Regalia (the jewel of office worn shall

be the jewel of the office each occupies, irrespective of his rank). All other Companions and Brethren

present shall wear appropriate Grand Chapter Regalia, Royal Arch Regalia, Excellent Master Regalia

PRINCIPAL AND GRAND MASTER’S APRON:

The Mark Grand Lodge apron of the First Grand Principal and Grand Master, Past First Grand

Principals and Grand Masters, the Pro-First Grand Principal and Grand Master and Past Pro-First

Grand Principals and Grand Masters shall be of white lambskin 400 mm wide and 355 mm long with a

pointed flap 162 mm at the point. The border along the sides and on the bottom of the apron to be of

coloured ribbon being maroon, dark blue and maroon 100 mm wide upon which shall be embroidered

roses and rose leaves all in gold. The border of the flap to be of the same ribbon 50 mm wide upon

which shall be embroidered hyssop all in gold. Gold lace 15 mm wide to be on the inside and outside

edge of the borders of both apron and flap. There will be a gold fringe around the outer edge of the

apron and flap between 35 mm and 50 mm in length. The binding at the top of the apron shall be

coloured ribbon being maroon, dark blue and maroon ribbon 38 mm wide. In the centre of the flap and

in each of the lower corners of the lambskin there shall be a gold tau superimposed on which shall be a

Keystone of appropriate size in white or gold. In the centre of the apron shall be the First Grand

Principal and Grand Master’s Mark Grand Lodge emblem (as specified in the Jewels of Office below)

within an embroidered wreath of in dexter roses and rose leaves and in sinister hyssop all in gold.

GRAND OFFICER’S APRON:

The Mark Grand Lodge apron for all other Grand Officers and Past Grand Officers shall be of white

lambskin 400 mm wide and 355 mm long with a pointed flap 162 mm at the point. The border along

the sides and on the bottom of the apron to be of coloured ribbon being maroon, dark blue and maroon

100 mm wide. The border of the flap to be of the same ribbon 50 mm wide. Gold lace 15 mm wide to

be on the inside and outside edge of the borders of both apron and flap. There will be a gold fringe

around the outer edge of the apron and flap between 35 mm and 50 mm in length. The binding at the

BANNERS, SWORDS AND SCEPTRES OF THE GRAND CHAPTER

BANNER OF THE GRAND LODGE OF MARK MASTER MASONS OF NEW SOUTH

WALES:

Shaped as a shield 740mm wide with each side 950 mm in length tapering down to a point 1230 mm.

The shield is dark blue with a red border 60 mm wide the border edged on both sides with gold lace 15

mm and at its base with a gold fringe 55 mm in length. Centrally placed a representation of the chain

jewel of the Grand Master 95 mm from the top inner border 570 mm in length and 490 mm in width at

the segment of circle in black edged and decorated in gold thread, the shield in the centre of the jewel

in its proper colours. Level with the top of the jewel in dexter a representation of Noah's Ark in gold

and in sinister a white Keystone detailed and with its lewis in gold. In a semi-circle above the whole the

words "GRAND LODGE OF M.M.M. OF N.S.W." in gold thread. The banner hangs from a plain gold

rod by red material identical to that of the border and is suspended by a light blue cord which is looped

around both ends of the suspension rod and is finished with a tassel of the same material on both sides.

BANNER OF THE UNITED SUPREME GRAND CHAPTER OF MARK AND ROYAL ARCH

MASONS OF NEW SOUTH WALES AND THE AUSTRALIAN CAPITAL TERRITORY:

Shaped as a shield 640mm wide with each side 800 mm in length tapering down to a point 1000 mm.

The shield is light blue with two borders each 20 mm wide the inner border being red the outer being

purple the outside edge of the purple border edged with gold lace 15 mm wide and at its base with a

gold fringe 55 mm in length. Centrally placed on the shield on a compartment (from dexter to sinister)

of thistles, wattle and waratahs the Arms of the United Supreme Grand Chapter proper supported on

either side by two inclined shields dexter the Royal Arms of Scotland and sinister the Arms of New

South Wales. Above the whole a red scroll bearing in the centre part of the ribbon on two lines the

words "UNITED SUPREME GRAND CHAPTER / OF MARK AND ROYAL ARCH MASONS" in

gold thread. Beneath the whole a red scroll on the dexter part of the ribbon the word "N.S.W." on the

centre part on two lines the word "AND / 1980" and on the sinister part the word "A.C.T." in gold

thread; and beneath that scroll another red scroll on the centre part the words "AD MAJOREM DEI

GLORIAM" in gold thread. The banner hangs from a plain gold rod by five loops of light blue material

identical to that of the shield each loop being 70mm wide. [PLATE BSS2]

THE GREAT BANNER (CRIMSON):

The banner is a rectangle 1080 mm wide and 960 mm in length of red or crimson silk cloth edged with

gold lace of 15 mm width on three sides and with a gold fringe 55 mm in length on three sides (the top

has no fringe). In the centre is a large representation of the Arms of unknown provenance being or a

chevron sable charged with extended compasses or between three stone windows or mortared sable.

On a wreath of the colours is a Crest being a tower proper mortared, ported and windowed sable above

which is the All Seeing Eye proper irradiated or. The Supporters to the Arms are representations of

two of the Four Living Creatures proper described in the Book of Revelation ch. 4 vs. 6-10. On a blue

scroll beneath the Arms is the Motto “IN DOMINO FIDUCIA OMNIS” in gold. Encircling the Arms,

Supporters, Crest and Motto are twelve white shields depicting the twelve signs of the zodiac in their

proper colours, commencing with the shield immediately above the Crest and proceedings clockwise,

viz.: Leo (a lion couchant), Virgo (a maiden depicted as an angel), Libra (a pair of scales), Scorpio (a

‘winged scorpion’ standing), Sagittarius (a centaur as an archer), Capricorn (a ‘sea-goat’), Aquarius (a

water bearer), Pisces (two fish), Aires (a ram lying), Taurus (a bull), Gemini (a pair of twins) and

Cancer (a crab). The banner is suspended from a plain wooden rod and hangs from a gold cord which

District of New South Wales prior to the creation of the United Supreme Grand Chapter [PLATE

CEREMONIAL SWORD OF THE FIRST GRAND PRINCIPAL AND GRAND MASTER:

The ceremonial sword consists of a blade 870 mm in length and a hilt of 200 mm in length. Attached

to its blade below the guard (which is 200 mm wide) representations of the jewel of a Royal Arch

Mason and the jewel of a Mark Master Mason. The hilt is decoratively engraved gold with silver

decorations whilst on either side of the pommel is a round jewel consisting of a circle on a light blue

background 35 mm in diameter the emblem of the Order above which is a radiated Ark of the Covenant

all in gold. Below the emblem on a saltire purple ribbon is the Motto of the Order “AD MAJOREM

DEI GLORIAM” all in gold. In the outer circle is the name of the Order in gold on a crimson

SCEPTRE OF OFFICE OF THE FIRST GRAND PRINCIPAL AND GRAND MASTER:

The Baton of Office is gold and is 280 mm in length. Around the crown are representations of the

jewels of all the following Degrees conferred by the United Supreme Grand Chapter: Holy Royal

Arch, Royal Ark Mariner, Excellent Master, Royal and Select Master and Red Cross Knights save for

the Degree of Mark Master Mason. On the head of the crown is a red velvet cap upon which is a gold

circle charged with an equilateral triangle which is in turn charged with the jewel of a Mark Master
