The above advertisement is triggered when a prospect places their mouse cursor over the keyword or key phrase that is hyperlinked within an article (the keyword is “cars” in this particular example). If the advertisement raises the prospect’s curiosity, he or she may click on the ad and you will be charged whatever bid price you have placed for that keyword. The different PPT traffic sources all offer different ad formats that can range from static text banners all the way to advanced video ads that can really engage your prospect. So the prospect will see whatever ad format that you have created for that campaign. In my experience, ads that contain some graphics generally outperform static text banners.

Pay Per Text Strategies

PPT traffic is pretty straight forward, but there are a few things you should be aware of before you start bidding on keywords and key phrases so that you don’t end up losing a lot of money. Keyword Tracking The first thing to do when you set up ad campaigns on a PPT traffic source is to always track right down to the keyword. Almost all of the PPT networks have the ability for you to place a keyword token at the end of your destination URL so that they can pass the keyword that generated the click and action (lead or sale) to your reporting system. This is absolutely crucial because you want to adjust the bids by keyword depending on the return you make on each keyword. You may even want to delete a money losing keyword altogether. One of the things I noticed is that you can get a lot of traffic by bidding on single word key phrases. But you have to be careful that you take into consideration that your ads may show up in irrelevant content. For example, if you were bidding on the music artist “Prince” because you wanted to promote music ringtones, you may show up in irrelevant content. An article that is about Prince Charles would trigger your ad because the word “prince” appears regularly and the article is not relevant. Another example is bidding on the keyword “home.” Most people will assume that this is a link back to the homepage of the web site that they are currently on and this could result in thousands of unqualified clicks. This was a hard lesson and cost me hundreds of dollars when I inadvertently bid on the keyword “home.” Precise Ad Writing You should still bid on single word key phrases because they have a lot of traffic, but just be prepared for non-qualified prospects to click on your ad. You can try to discourage this by writing a very precise ad that includes negative qualifiers such as “must be 18+” or even a price point (i.e. $3.95 for shipping). I have noticed that two-word and more keyword phrases bring the best conversions when it comes to CPA offers. This is obviously because the prospect is better qualified and the longer the keyword phrases, the better the conversions. Now the key here is to get as much traffic as possible, so what I do is bid on thousands of keywords and then write a very precise ad to qualify the traffic.

I don’t need to worry if my click-thru rate is bad because there are no quality score issues on most of the PPT networks. You just need to be one of the highest bidders in order to have your ads shown. What I normally do when getting started is copy my already profitable PPC campaigns on Google Adwords and Bing Ads and duplicate them on the PPT networks. In most cases, you have already optimized your keywords and ads on the PPC search engines, so you have a good chance of being profitable right from the start when you move them over to PPT networks. If you don’t have any PPC campaigns to copy over, then you will have to do some trial and error testing on the PPT networks until you find something that is profitable. Rotate Similar Offers One of the quickest ways to find a profitable offer is to rotate multiple related offers until you find one that generates the highest earnings per click (EPC). For example, if you were bidding on the keyword “credit card”, you should rotate more than one credit card offer until you can determine which offer makes you the most money. I usually wait about 100 clicks on each offer until I declare a winner based on the highest EPC. When you switch all the traffic to the one winner, you will see your commissions or sales skyrocket. You will need to have a rotating script or software program to auto rotate the offers. Here is a sample PHP script: <? $offers = array( "offer1.html", "offer2.html", "offer3.html", etc. etc... "offer 10.html" ); shuffle($offers); include($offers[0]); ?> This simple PHP script will rotate the offers randomly and you can run it until you find an offer with the highest EPC. There are software tools available online such as Adtrackz, Prosper202 or PPV Dominator that can auto rotate offers for you.

Mass Bidding You could bid on thousands of unrelated keywords at the minimum bid and hope that you get enough conversions to make the campaign profitable. Remember that you are only charged when someone clicks on your ad. You could get millions of free impressions and with a qualified ad, get enough conversions to make the campaign profitable. I once managed to do this promoting a MyPCBackup CPA offer and bidding on very generic keywords like “download.” This strategy generally works best for offers paying higher that $5 per lead. Also, I only recommend that you do this on a PPT network where you can get traffic for less than $0.03 depending on the country that you are targeting. In the next section, I will introduce you to the different PPT networks.
