Stanford For lo, I raise upBarber Adagio for stringsBritten Agnus Dei (from War Requiem)Moore Prayers of Dietrich BonhoefferElgar Elegy for stringsHaydn Missa ‘in Angustiis’ (Nelson Mass) with Katharine Fuge, soprano

Stanford’s exciting anthem For lo, I raise up that bitter and hasty nation is a true chorister favourite, whilst the Agnus Dei of Britten’s War Requiem also uses the poetry of Wilfred Owen. The prayers of Dietrich Bonhoeffer offer a modern slant on imprisonment whilst Haydn’s Nelson Mass is subtitled ‘In time of war’. However the music alternates between the dark mood of war and the rejoicing that comes with a victory.

‘In war and in peace’

2014 sees the 100th Anniversary of the outbreak of WW1 and the 70th anniversary of the D-day landings – the former saw Europe plunge into darkness and the latter saw the start of the ascent from another dark period into light. The Festival programme is designed to show that, from darkness can come peace and light.

His Requiem is an enduring work that is sung regularly across the world. It is based on plainsong themes and ends with the sublimely beautiful and restful In paradisum. Duruflé was a great friend of the organist and composer Jehan Alain and the main theme in the Prelude and Fugue is based on musical notation of the letters A-L-A-I-N. Alain was destined to have been possibly the most innovative composer of organ music in France in the 20th century but sadly lost his life in Saumur in 1940 at the age of 29.
