About the ProjectChanging the Learning Landscape (HEA)

Aim: Evaluate the use of mobile devices within an educational & art and design context

Process:• 7 students given a mobile device for 1 year• Range of devices: Ipad mini, Nexus 7, Kindle Fire, Kobo Arc• Range of disciplines: Games Design, Costume, Illustration, Photography• Students required to provide feedback once a month and complete a

presentation at end of the year• If all aspects completed successfully students could then retain the device

• Other Aspects to the project (talk about another day)

Workflow• Making Notes in and outside class• Documenting with Camera: Own work, sources,

research, inspiration• Using Calendar for reminders, scheduling,

timetable, deadlines• Multiple Email accounts – personal and College• Evernote enabled notes to be stored in one place.• Blogging could happen conveniently from

anywhere.

Convenience / Ease of Access

• Easy to carry around• No need to boot up• Can use anywhere (truly mobile)• Use as a secondary device (music, training, etc.)• No barrier of screen • Collaborative tool• Long battery life• Can sync with other devices

Becoming paperless

• Allows blogs to be used as sketchbooks

• Allows collection of large number of sources

• Reduces need to print out research ideas

• Allows students to carry portfolio electronically

Discipline• Games Design

– Kindles and Nexus7– Students wouldn’t recommend for courses that use computers– Would find a graphics tablet more useful

• Photography– Useful for productivity– Useful for scanning and taking photographs– Useful for being able to display portfolio / looks professional

• Illustration– Ipad Mini and Kobo Arc– Made certain tasks easier– Useful for productivity– Useful for scanning and taking photographs– Pretty much does the same as laptop but more convenient– Should be used as an incentive to work hard

• Costume Design– Useful for productivity– Useful for collaboration– Useful for scanning and taking photographs– Would be useful for students on the course– Useful for being able to display portfolio / looks professional

Type of Device1. Ipad Mini

– Easy to use / intuitive – Good screen resolution– Good quality camera– Can sync with other apple products– Fast and quick to use

2. Kobo Arc– More affordable than ipad mini– Artistically there are limits

3. Nexus 7– Poor battery life– Storage was limited (8GB)– OS was slow (“Slower than my iphone 4s”)– No camera– Best value for money / newer generations

4. Kindle Fire– Limited Store (Kindle rather than full android store)– Poor battery life– OS struggled with more than one app open– Screen too small

What’s next?• No large scale adoption at this stage• Ipad / Ipad mini appears to be the best option• Need to consider further disciplinary differences• Demonstrates nature of personal device • No replacement for the laptop / desktop• Useful for collaborative activities

• We need further reflection and to continue discussions with students further
