Additional lanes are needed by the year 2020
PURPOSE - To add capacity to meet future transportation demand (Year 2040), improve travel time reliability and to provide long-term mobility options. The project includes operational, capacity and safety enhancements at the US 441 (SR 7), Lyons Road and Florida’s Turnpike (SR 91) interchanges and Powerline Road intersection.
NEEDS OF THE PROJECT
38-63% increase in traffic from year 2014 to 2040
• South of US 441: 1 new lane by 2020. • US 441 to Lyons Road: 1 new lane by 2020 and 2 new lanes
by 2039. • Lyons Road to Florida’s Turnpike: 2 new lanes by 2020 and
3 lanes by 2035. • Florida’s Turnpike to Powerline Road: 1 new lane by 2023. • Interchange Improvements.
Corridor Traffic Demand• South of US 441: 38% Increase• East of Florida’s Turnpike: 63% Increase
Speeds drop to 20-50 MPH
Corridor Capacity Needs
Travel Time Reliability• Speeds drop to 20-50 MPH
during peak periods.
MPH
Increase in population will result in increased traffic
Population Growth• Broward County population will increase by 12% between 2010 and 2040.• Population of surrounding cities will grow between 11% and 21%.
Long-Term Mobility• Residents and workers in the area will face
severe congestion affecting their economic viability and quality of life.
• Congestion will lead to increase in accidents.
2010 2040
Emergency Evacuation• This corridor is critical during
emergency evacuation periods.
System Linkage• This project provides continuous
express lanes along the Sawgrass Expressway and connects with the future Florida’s Turnpike express lanes.
Severecongestion affects economyof the cities
Transit Operations• Existing congestion impacts
transit operations• Express Lanes provide
opportunities for transit expansions

NO-BUILD ALTERNATIVE CONDITIONS
LEVEL OF SERVICE (LOS) DEFINITIONSFree-flow traffic with individual users virtually unaffected by the presence of others in the traffic stream.
Stable traffic flow with a high degree of freedom to select speed and operating conditions but with some influence from other users.
LOS A
LOS B
LOS C
LOS D
LOS E
LOS F
Restricted flow that remains stable but with significant interactions with others in the traffic stream. The general level of comfort and convenience declines noticeably at this level.
High-density flow in which speed and freedom to maneuver are severely restricted and comfort and convenience have declined even though flow remains stable.
Unstable flow at or near capacity levels with poor levels of comfort and convenience.
Forced traffic flow in which the amount of traffic approaching a point exceeds the amount that can be served. LOS F is characterized by stop-and-go waves, poor travel times, low comfort and convenience, and increased accident exposure.
