The University of the Third Age is a unique Worldwide movement that encourages older people to take up or continue educational and other

interests in friendly and informal settings. U3A Dubbo began in 1991, and currently offers more than 20 courses to nearly 400 members.

Course Leaders provide their time and services free of charge. This allows us to keep our fees (currently $20.00 per annum) to a minimum.

Enrolment Days Friday 2 February and Monday 5 February 10am to 12.00 noon. Western Plains Cultural Centre Members are advised that the format for enrolling and paying are being reversed from previous years. Instead of entering via the ramp, that is now the exit. Entry via 2 steps into old Seniors Room (now Science) where fees are paid and enrolments further down corridor in Art Room. If access via steps not suitable, the ramp can be used if needed. Fees remain $20 for year.

Annual General Meeting Monday 5 February - after 12.00 noon

Music room (formerly Bindyite) - WPCC Refreshments will be served preceding meeting. Professor Andrew Vann, Vice Chancellor of Charles Sturt University has very kindly accepted our invitation to address the meeting. Nominations for positions form can be accessed at WPCC on stand inside front door. It would be nice to see some new faces offering to stand for positions. Ukulele Group After a short summer break, local ukulele players are eagerly waiting to sign up for more tuition and fun in the 2018 U3A class with Dennis Wilson. Keen uke players have spent some of January doing their own practice, and gathering in small groups to spread ukulele joy around the central west. Anyone who is interested in playing the ukulele will find strong support around Dubbo.

THE THIRD AGE - DUBBO Providing an educational experience for seniors

in Dubbo and surrounding areas

Planning is underway for WestWordsFest 2018, September 14-16 at the WPCC in Dubbo. The theme is Romance, but don’t think bodice ripping romps in hospital beds is all there is to Romance writing. Think right outside the box to the possibilities of Futuristic, Paranormal, Supernatural, Gender Bending, Historical, Contemporary, Time Travel, Gothic, Rural and Urban Romance! Planning to self-publish or Indie publish in any genre and need a hands-on workshop on marketing? We’ve got that covered. Pitching to publishers and—fingers crossed—an agent? Got that covered, too. That’s only a taste of what you can expect during WWF2018.

Stay connected by liking OWC and WWF on Facebook or become a member.

The festival is only part of what OWC offers regional writers, particularly members. Membership has dropped to $12 for the second half of the financial year. Follow this link to become a member or renew your membership. 123tix.com.au/events/outbackwriters

What do you get for $12 membership? Publication of short stories, memoir and poems in our newsletter, which is emailed to you and available on the OWC website. This enables you to publish 300-word challenge responses—you don't have to come to the Hub to contribute. Send your 300-word challenge contributions to [email protected] (Subject to the editor's discretion.) Challenges coming up are - February: Bosses/Workers, March: War/Peace, April: Early Settlers/History. Facilitated book launches - Links for authors, editors, and other writing related businesses, published at www.outbackwriters.weebly.com will drive traffic to your website, blog, business and books, increasing your traffic and sales. Provides opportunities to sell your books at our monthly Hub meeting, workshops and festival. Emailed updates of opportunities and competitions. Optional - ongoing participation in the Orana Writers' Hub where members network and share their work for critique.

The Hub meets on the first Saturday of each month in the Board Room of the WPPC from 10am to 1pm.

Here are some comments on why the Hub is important for those who attend: ‘For most of my life I lived in an isolated community. Now retired I am thrilled to be able to attend such a group, as it is something I have always wanted to do.’

‘I keep coming across items I have written over the years. When reading them now I apply the information I have learned at the Outback Writers Hub and am pleased with the result.’

‘I feel that it is rather important to record that era of my parents and my life as the young members of the family do not have the pleasure of listening and learning from their grandparents these days. They are far too busy with their own generation. One day though, they may appreciate the family history.’

‘I enjoy meeting the other members of the group. I like the subject matter we are invited to write about and enjoy the challenge of keeping to that word limit. ‘Writing' is a lot more involved than I ever imagined and if you think you could write a book without 'too much trouble', you have a lot to learn.’

‘I enjoy other people's outlook on life, their writing, and am learning a lot as Treasurer, supporting the events that we held throughout the year.’

‘I enjoy the company of like-minded people, who are helpful with suggestions for improvement of stories. The monthly 300-word challenge ensures that one is constantly in touch with a creative bent. Australia wide competitions some of which offer cash prizes for winning entries, can be accessed through information from members. I look forward to meeting up each month with friends made through the organisation.’

Interested in improving your writing, or hanging out with writers? Check us out on Saturday 3 February. For more information email Val

The Palmer Street Singers had an extremely busy performance schedule

through November-December of 2017, singing Christmas Carols at various venues

around the local community. After a well-earned summer break and a jovial New Year party this choir is now offering Irish a cappella music throughout March,

because St Patrick's Day is observed on March 17. If you are involved in a local group interested in having PSS entertain

you, please get in touch with Di Clifford, on 0458 032 150. This SATB a cappella group, choosing a wide selection of sacred and secular material, practises in Dubbo on Wednesday evenings, 5.45pm-7pm. If you would like to share in the enjoyment of singing in a group: Just give Di a call. The feel-good effect of singing and sharing musical experiences is real, as every singer has found!! Come along, sing with PSS and surprise yourself with community service and palpable joy. Jan Condie

Music lovers flocked to Gulgong at the end of December, for the 32nd Annual Gulgong Folk Festival, to enjoy iconic bush band, “The Bushwackers”, who shared centre stage with other groups and individual performers from many parts of eastern Australia. GFC Inc President, Marcus McLennan, was pleased that the program also offered direct musical participation for festival goers through workshops for vocals, ukulele and guitar. Two visiting choirs, including ’Sounds Live' from Bathurst, added to the great mix of musical genres. Enthusiastic guitarists entered the acoustic guitar competition with the winner, Pete Riley, from Dubbo, receiving a magnificent Cole Clark guitar from the Old Bank Music Shop, also from Dubbo! Festival volunteers were kept busy at HQ where a 3-day Festival pass cost $90, $80 at the early bird price. Festivals such as this need funding, and the challenge for organisers is to provide a great event whist keeping costs as low as possible. This represented the best Festival value in Australia, as a ticket to see the Bushwackers in Concert costs around $50. On Saturday morning Buskers' Corner was taken up by harpist, Kath Morgan, who delighted local shoppers in Mayne Street. Other musicians stepped up on Sunday, to offer their own unique sounds. The John Dengate parody writing competition was presented to an enthusiastic capacity crowd, which was treated to 80+ minutes of entertainment. The organisers thank Lachlan Dengate, son of Dale and John, for being available to present the award to the 2017 winner, songwriter and musician Derek Dowding from Wallsend. Volunteers to be thanked include Lee Hilder and Kevin Endacott from Dubbo, who were highly valued for their expertise at the sound desks. The GFF Committee was pleased to use great music venues in the CBD of Gulgong such as the CWA Hall, the RSL Club and the Opera House, as well as popular pubs such as the Prince of Wales, the Commercial and the Post Office Hotel. For some festival attendees and performers this was their first GGF, and they will be warmly welcomed for the next Festival, with interest starting to mount already. Local musicians were clearly appreciated at GFF 2017, and there is always more room for performers from regional, local and metropolitan/ interstate areas. Happy New Year to everyone, and may you experience some great and absorbing music through 2018. Marcus McLennan - President

EVENTS

Alexander Mackendrick's 1955 film was the last great Comedy out of England’s iconic Ealing Studios and would become its most iconic. A gang of thieves, headed by Professor Marcus (Alec Guinness), takes two rooms at a boarding house run by the eccentric Mrs. Louisa Wilberforce. Here they pretend to be a practising string quartet as a cover for their true intention -- a security van robbery. Although the gang successfully carry off their heist, the criminals are eventually undone by their own greed and their various, unsuccessful attempts to murder their meddling landlady who remains oblivious to their crime -- or does she?

A simple, haunting musical phrase whistled offscreen tells us that a young girl will be killed. “Who Is the Murderer?” pleads a nearby placard as serial killer Hans Beckert (Peter Lorre) closes in on little Elsie Beckmann . . . In his harrowing masterwork M, Fritz Lang combines direct social commentary with chilling suspense, creating a panorama of private madness and public hysteria that to this day remains the blueprint for the psychological thriller.

On a hot day in New York, three men set out to rob a bank. It's supposed to take ten minutes, but things start going wrong from the beginning when one of them bails at the last minute. Four hours later, the bank is surrounded by police, a media circus, and crowds of spectators. Dog Day Afternoon was based on a true story, and like Lumet’s other great masterpiece, 12 Angry Men, was filmed majorly in a single location riding on the strength of its two sensational lead performances. The film captures the social upheaval of 1970s America and helps to create a new hero out of the disenfranchised.

As It Is – From Di As we peruse the articles in this newsletter and other print media we note the many opportunities for social interaction. This may be in our own neighbourhood, or in a regional centre some distance away. We have an amazing array of choices. The internet, with YouTube, Facebook, Skype, email facilities and more, offers instant local or even global contact from the comfort of our own home on an individual basis. Or, we can drop in to a favoured local cafe, store or cultural outlet to collect information or meet up with friends and acquaintances. Shared drinks, snacks, meals and conversations can meet needs apart from the immediate physical ones! From birth we connect with others. People need people. Our closest connections teach us language, ways to meet our immediate needs, social skills and the first appreciation of the world we live in as we develop from babyhood. The social web which we create is a powerful source of support and inspiration.

Around the Orana Region we see modern developments in education. A new school in Dubbo, the Central West Leadership Academy, has opened its doors to students as of January 29. Congratulations to Principal, Mandi Randell, and her team. Other educational facilities around NSW seem to be able to assess current and future needs of our youth and our society, and develop policies ready to cater for developments through the 21st century in the best possible way. Social values and interactions are what makes any school special. School and community connection play a big part in any annual plan, with benefits for all.

When we do our grocery shopping, attend band /choir /sports practice, go to community group meetings and events or support a cultural presentation we happily mix with others. Self-help creative groups can be most helpful and empowering. The newer groups found locally including the writers, film makers, artists, dancers and musicians offer strong modelling for individual and group support. This attitude spills over into the general community, with benefits for everyone.

When radio and TV news brings us the latest developments in worldwide events we may wonder what mankind has learnt, from history. As the saying goes, 'anyone who has not learnt from past errors is bound to repeat them'. Our social fabric is possibly starting to unravel. Extreme right and left-wing groups have gained power and influence, with economic and political ideology often negating the needs of citizens around the globe. Those with power are urged to use it wisely for the sake of the environment, political cordiality, and all nations around the world.

There is much to be gained from positive attitudes, and a sense of appreciation of all cultures. There is much to be said for tolerance. May 2018 be a year of increased cordiality and strong development of our personal and social web.

Dubbo Artz Inc needs your support also. if you are not a member, perhaps you could show your solidarity in the local cultural sphere by doing something special, and joining Dubbo Artz. Your new membership may help ensure the survival of this vital community group. Good resolutions and a positive attitude for 2018 will be beneficial for everyone in our community. This is the good news. The Dubbo Artz Committee is happy to hear from any individual or group wishing to have a voice on local issues.

I look forward to seeing you at many of the fine events on offer around Dubbo through the next year, and beyond.

Bangarra Dance Theatre:

Wednesday 14 February @ 7.30pm

The Nutcracker: Thursday 29 March @ 7.30pm

Afternoon’s Tonight! with James Valentine

Saturday 17 March @ 8pm

The Wine Buffs: Friday 23 March

@ 7.30pm

The Diamonds: Saturday

3 February @ 7.30pm

After yet another successful Season Launch, our 2018 Subscription period has now closed, and patrons are able to purchase individual tickets to shows in this year’s program. Once again, the popularity of classical dance is evident, both The Nutcracker and A Russian Triple Bill were popular choices with our subscribers and, undoubtedly, seats will sell quickly over the coming months now that regular non-subscribing patrons can purchase tickets.

Patrons at our 2018 Season Launch got a sneak peek at The Diamonds, an all-female singing trio who have loads of energy and great dance moves and who will kick off our Season on Saturday 3 February at 7.30pm. At the launch we were lucky enough to have the very talented Mighty Big Band from Dubbo as a backup band for The Diamonds, however next month they will be accompanied by their touring four-piece band The Players, who have been described as sensational and backed Boys in the Band when they performed at the Theatre last year. Although The Diamonds could be selected in the subscription package, it has also been on general sale since November, so if you are keen to start your theatre-going year with a huge dash of dazzle don’t delay with your booking.

As a reminder to patrons who did subscribe, keep an eye out for the arrival of your subscriber card in the mail mid-February. This handy little card includes our details, the logos of our hospitality partners so you remember where you can get a discount, and your special code word, which gives you access to discounted tickets when booking on-line or over the phone. Don’t forget to flash your Subscriber card at the Box Office when collecting your discounted tickets, and when using the code word to purchase tickets at the Subscriber discount rate keep in mind it is for your use as a Subscriber only.

Early enquiries at the Box Office indicated that many patrons are looking forward to the return of Bangarra Dance Theatre with their contemporary work OUR land people stories. This performance includes a trio of dance pieces, one of which features two Dubbo-born dancers, Beau Dean Riley Smith and Daniel Riley. Set on the Talbragar Reserve, the abstract dance story Miyagan maps their cultural heritage from Wiradjuri country and will resonate with our local audience. Note that Bangarra Dance Theatre’s show is on a date that may also resonate with romantic types, Wednesday 14 February, Valentine’s Day. Make a night of it with that special someone and dine out before coming to enjoy the performance at 7.30pm, or pre-order interval drinks if you are keen to impress and toast the occasion.

Speaking of Valentine’s Day and theatre dates in general; what do you do if your special someone isn’t interested in taking you to the theatre, or your bestie isn’t interested in a particular show, or can’t make up their mind to go to a show, or if your special someone is you and you don’t want to go alone? Join our FAB Club of course! Our newly introduced Friends and Buddies Club is the solution to all these dilemmas! If you would prefer not to go to the Theatre solo, by joining the FAB club, you will be seated in a great section next to other solo theatre-goers and maybe make a new friend (or two) and share your passion for drama, or dance, or opera or whichever genre of show you are attending. When booking your seat let the ticketing staff know you would like to be part of the FAB club and on the night (or day) of the show make a beeline for the ushers who will be near the Box Office ready to welcome you and make casual introductions, so you know a few other FAB club members. If your New Year resolution was to be more social, or meet new people then the FAB club is definitely for you, and if you had no New Year resolution well, you can still join it! From the team at DRTCC

Staging Stories In 2015 Orana Arts commenced the Staging Stories project. Funded through an initiative by Create NSW, Staging Stories aimed to develop and provide support for Aboriginal playwrights and performers across the whole of regional NSW. In 2015 Orana Arts supported six workshops in Dubbo to bring together Aboriginal people with an interest in theatre; be it storytelling, performing, writing, acting, or fun. Aboriginal theatre is rare in regional NSW and people did not really understand what or why Staging Stories was being developed. As the project developed, however, it became clear how important it is to tell Aboriginal stories from Aboriginal perspectives and that regional NSW is rich with stories lived by Aboriginal people. One such narrative is the life story of Narromine Elders Dick and Ruth Carney. Keen to have their experiences presented on stage, the couple began working with professional playwrights and producers to develop their story into a script. A reading of the initial script was staged in Dubbo – at the Black Box Theatre in the Western Plains Cultural Centre in November 2017 – to showcase the draft script and process, as well as some special insight into the stories behind the stories. It was an incredibly special event and the response was overwhelming, with one audience member saying: “Thank you for inviting me to this fabulous event. I felt so thrilled and thankful for the opportunity to learn about the lives of Aunty Ruth Carney and Uncle Dick Carney. I felt that the format was intimate and welcoming; entirely appropriate for the subject. The vibe was wonderful and the venue perfect. The event gave me an important and extraordinary insight into the hardships experienced by Aboriginal people in rural Australia through the voices of those who had lived it. It also spoke to the dignity, integrity and strength of Aunty Ruth Carney and Uncle Dick Carney, and their love for each other. They have brought a special light to me personally”. In 2018, the creative process continues, with Melbourne theatre professional John Harvey and regional writer/director Sam Paine working with Dick and Ruth Carney to stage a full production. Staging Stories will be performed to a wider audience mid-year.

The same is true of our January gathering and it was great to see Linzi with a full session’s worth of songs. Jock and Dawn have been entertaining the wonderful people at Timbrebongie House in Narromine and are currently working on Australia Day. Our March meeting will have an Irish touch in honour of bold Saint Paddy. Our meetings have changed somewhat, and the emphasis is on the music always. Once again, I would like to remind any interested creative people that we are first and foremost about music. The word “Folk” is interpreted loosely and old-time country, bluegrass, blues, country-folk and acoustic versions of jazz and rock songs have been heard from time to time. All this of course is in addition to traditional and contemporary Australian and Celtic music. Looking forward to seeing and hearing you at 2.30pm, the second Sunday of every month at the Western Star Hotel in Dubbo. Yours in music Jock Webb - President
