Course InformationCourse Description

The diagnosis and management of childhood tic disorders and Tourettes syndrome can be difficult. These disorders are often misdiagnosed and mistreated in the community. Child neurologists are not always up-to-date on the newest means of diagnosis or management. There are other entities that mimic the more common movement disorders that children have including tics. New molecular diagnostic tests are now available to determine the etiology of some of these movement disorders.

Based on multiple referrals from the community and the above concerns, this year’s Pediatric Neurology Update course is focusing on the more common childhood movement disorder and also new developments in the diagnosis and management of these movement disorders. A variety of different movement disorders will be emphasized, especially Tourettes syndrome, PANDAS syndrome, and new paraneoplastic syndromes. Also molecular diagnosis of rarer causes of abnormal movements including the cerebellar ataxias will be reviewed.

Learning Objectives

• Update attendees in newer concepts in the management of the diagnosis and management of Tourettes syndrome including newer diagnostic (often molecular) tests and newer drugs.

• Update attendees in the diagnosis and treatment of non-tic childhood movement disorders including stereotypies and ataxia and ideologies for these movements including PANDAS syndrome

• Update new advances in the diagnosis of non-infectious probable autoimmune encephalitis in children and adults.

Target Audience

Neurologists, neurosurgeons, pediatricians, neuropsychologists, nurse/nurse practitioners and allied neuroscience and pediatric health care professionals.
