“2 A Word From Our Pastor Revival and Sunday Night Services

Summertime is here! As I write this article the echoes of VBS this morning still ring in the halls of the First Baptist Church of Pelham gold-mining camp! In July we will have several special Sunday night services leading to our revival in August. On July 10th we will have a Homecoming Block Party to celebrate our 2011 church-wide summer mission trip. Place and time are still under consideration just now. On July 17th we are having Mike Shaw leading worship and Mike Shaw preaching. I will bring a message that night from Romans 1 entitled “Eager to Preach”. On July 24th Bro. Robert Heard will be preaching and on July 31st I will bring a message entitled “Why Revival Tarries” (with

apologies to Leonard Ravenhill for using the title of his classic sermon on revival). In August, Dr. Dennis Nunn will be here with us for a revival that is called “Every Believer a Witness”. If you can envision what would happen if every believer left our church campus every Sunday to share their faith in every day settings, then you will want to be present for every service. Dr. Nunn will preach on Sunday morning, August 7th in all morning services and then each evening Sunday through Wednesday. Don’t miss any of these special services in July and August! I love you, I love you, I love you. God bless you and God bless America!

Dear Dave, My husband says there’s more risk associated with using a debit card than a credit card. Is this true? BrittanyDear Brittany, As long as you’re using a Visa or MasterCard debit card and processing it as a credit card, you will have the same exact protection against fraud and theft as a credit card—period. If your number is misused or your money stolen, both Visa and MasterCard require the member bank to replace the money you lost. In the case of a credit card, they would have to wipe it off your bill. Remember, your debit card has two functions. If you use your debit card as an ATM card—which means you enter your personal identification number—then your protection extends only as far as your bank or ATM system allows. These protections can vary depending on your particular bank. And most of the time, the protection you receive from the bank alone isn’t nearly as good! Dave

Dear Dave, Why do you only recommend 15-year mortgages? AnonymousDear Anonymous, I recommend 15-year mortgages, and never more than that, because the normalization of the 30-year mortgage has helped create a constant state of financial bondage for the middle class. It’s caused average, everyday people to lose hope of ever paying off their homes and being totally debt-free. I understand that it costs a little more

per month when you have a 15-year house note instead of a 20-or-30-year mortgage. But really, it’s just a few dollars more—like 20 percent more than you’d pay on a traditional 30-year mortgage. Plus, it gets you out of debt at least 15 years earlier! Think about this, too. Did you know that people who take out 15-year home loans have a higher probability of paying them off early? It’s true. It’s because they know from the start that they’re not going to have a house payment hanging over their heads for the rest of their lives. They can see light at the end of the tunnel right from the start. Broke people ask questions like how much down and how much per month. Rich people, or people with a plan who are going to be rich one day, ask how much or what’s the total price! Dave

The Counselor’s Corner

Stress is going to happen to all of us at some point. While we cannot always prevent the situations that contribute to stress, we can learn how to minimize the impact of stressors. A recent study re-vealed that a primate facing an unpleas-ant situation will get a stress response. But if the primate is put through the same stressor while in the room with a friend, the impact of the stressor is less-ened and the release of stress hormones is greatly decreased. Actual studies show

that stress hormones make us more sus-ceptible to illness (Sapolsky, 2004). Social support networks are made up of friends, relatives and brothers and sisters in Christ. When you are going through problems or situations that are stressful, it is important to share that burden with another. Social support comes in many forms, such as having a hand to hold or a shoulder to cry on, an ear to listen or someone to cradle you and tell you it will be okay. God tells

us to bear one another’s burdens and to comfort each other in the same way that we have been comforted.

Linda Story The HOPE Center

Stress is a fact of life

We have two success stories that we would like to share with our church family. One of our church members, Chris Vonderau, heard about a job opening and passed it along to the jobs ministry. We searched through our job seekers and found several people who would meet the criteria. One of our candidates went on the interview and got the job. In making calls to employers, it was discovered that one of them had a job opening. We passed this along to our job list and one of our church members, Lena Smith, went on the interview. She was hired for the job and has been there about one month. Lena is going to pass along any job openings within her new company to us so hopefully we can help some other job seekers. God is blessing this ministry through the help of our First Baptist Church Family. Thank you all for your support. Please remember to pray for this ministry and everyone involved. If you hear of job openings in the community, let us know. If you or someone you know are in search of a job, contact our office. Our e-mail is [email protected]. We meet at the church every Monday from 9:00 am until noon. Job Concern Ministry Staff

Pray Now! Please begin praying now for the “Every Believer a Witness” Revival with Dennis Nunn. It will be August 7-10. The most powerful thing we can do to make this revival a success

is pray, pray, pray! Will you join me in committing to pray daily for the revival, for Dennis Nunn, for faithfulness of our members, and for those who need to hear the gospel? I know that this revival has the potential to change our church and community forever. Please commit to pray, attend, and bring others with you.

New Adult Discipleship Training Classes The Fall Semester of Wednesday Night Discipleship Training begins on August 17, and Sunday Night Dis-cipleship Training begins on August 28. Classes include Spiritual Gifts, Precepts Bible Study, Book of Romans, Book of Revelation, and many others. Stewardship Emphasis

I want to say a special “thank you” to all who volunteered in our recent VBS. It was SO exciting to see so many children learning about Jesus with a huge smile on their face! Thank you to every student and adult who helped to make it happen! Many lives were changed for eternity! It’s summer and hot in Alabama. There are so many things going on and we are all running in ten different directions. I want to personally encourage you to make worship a priority in your life. Worship is something that is vital to your relationship with the Lord. We gather together every week to worship as the body of Christ, but there are many ways that you can worship God through-out the week. I believe that we are the busiest group of people that I have ever seen. Let’s not be too busy to remember what is most important, and that is our relationship with our Lord. We have somewonderful things planned this summer. As you read through the newsletter, take note of how you and your family will participate. First of all, we need to be in prayer for all of the decisions made during mission trips this summer. We are already prepar-ing and you have a wonderful opportunity to experience revival August 7-10. Our Music Makerz Choir needs a couple of work-ers to help lead them. They will start back on August 17, and we are already making plans. Our Praise Makerz Choir will need a few more workers when they resume on September 11. I know it seems like the staff is always asking for help, but our heart’s desire is that each one of the members here at First Baptist Church of Pelham find where they can BEST serve with their individual God-given gifts. That is vital to the success of any ministry. This is all God’s ministry, and this is His church, and we are here to be Christ’s hands and feet. God bless you all, as you continue to serve Him with your whole heart, soul, mind and strength. I love you all, Paula

Dear Senior Adults, Thank you Senior Adults, for your faithful work in Vacation Bible School. A special thanks to Bonnie Elder and her crew, who made Bible school work smoothly. Bonnie was pressed into action and she measured up to the task. Thanks to all the volunteers who came every day and helped all the boys and girls with the crafts. I am proud of every single one of you. Now on to the future. Remember: Senior Adult Luncheon in on July 12. It is a covered dish meal this time. It seems that the summer gets shorter each year, and I hope you are having a good one. We will take a day trip in July, but at this point, the plans are not fully developed. Sometimes you have to wait on other folk to answer your inquiry. We will have details for you soon. I know twenty-four Senior Adults are getting excited about the Alaska trip in August. It will be here before you know it. I love you all. Keep up the good work. For His Glory, Bro. Paul

Cheergivers MinistryMeet Florence Strickland This month the Cheergivers would like to introduce you to Mrs. Florence Strickland. Florence was born in Waycross, Georgia, where she lived for 19 years. John Strickland came to Waycross to visit a friend and they “crashed” a party that Florence was attending. She was 19 and he was 24. John went back to Birmingham and told his mother that he had met the girl he was going to marry. John and Flor-ence lived in the West End area when they first married, and moved to Center Point several years later. They raised one daughter and two sons there. They left Center Point when they moved to Riverchase to live with their son. John died in 2003. Florence has seven grand-children and nine great grand-children. Florence became a Christian when she was 18 and was baptized in a river. “It was so beautiful to see all the people from the church watching from the river bank”, she said. Florence lives at The Oaks and take part in all the activities. She requested prayer for her daughter-in-law and her family. Her daughter-in-law’s mother had died the day before this interview. She said the Cheergivers “spoil” her with gifts. She laughed and said she loves it. She is a lovely lady and always has a bright smile for us. Our church is to be sold Our church is to be sold! Yes, our church is to be sold! No, we are not about to lose our building through foreclosure or repudiated debt. However, our church must be sold to the city and county. It has been planted to wield an influence beyond its membership and walls. Thus, we are presented with an enormous challenge. Our church must be sold to the unchurched! There are scores of people in our community who would attend our church and join us in the Lord’s service if we would bother to sell our church to them. How much is our church worth to you? How much do you val-ue its ministry? How much do you value the Christ it proclaims? As a member of this church, you are selling your church to others every day. Are you selling it short? Has it helped you to the extent that you’re willing to sell it to others? Will you be enthusiastic in talking about your church? Will you share your church with others who have no idea what they’re missing? Take our church seriously and talk to people about what our church has to offer them. —copied

Freedom of religion President Franklin D. Roosevelt knew that freedom of religion was a necessary element in a true democracy. He believed that when there is no freedom to worship God as one chooses, democ-racy is not a reality. Roosevelt said, “An ordering of society which relegates reli-gion, democracy and good faith among nations to the background can find no place within it for the ideals of the Prince of Peace. The United States rejects such an ordering and retains its ancient faith.” —copied
