1. PasswordsNothing is more effective than changing your online passwords
regularly. Make the passwords more complicated by combining letters, numbers, special characters (minimum 10 characters in total) and change them on a regular basis. Don't include personal info in your passwords (like birthdates, pets' names, etc.). Cumbersome as it is, use different user ID / password combinations for different accounts and avoid writing them down.
2. Secure your computerFirewalls are the first line of cyber defense; they block connections
to unknown or bogus sites and will keep out some types of viruses and hackers. Use anti-virus/malware software
Prevent viruses from infecting your computer by installing and regularly updating anti-virus software. Prevent spyware from infiltrating your computer by installing and updating anti-spyware software.
3. Protect your Data Use encryption for your most sensitive files such as tax returns or
financial records, make regular back-ups of all your important data, and store it in another location.
4. Be Social-Media SavvyMake sure your social networking profiles are set to private. Exclude
the following items from any of your social media profiles: Birthdate/place, Mother's maiden name, home address, planned trips, phone number, names/ages of your children. Be cautious when giving out personal information on the Internet.
5. Secure your Mobile DevicesBe aware that your mobile device—not just your computer—is
vulnerable to viruses and hackers. Download applications only from trusted sources. Lock your mobile devise/tablet.
6. Install the latest operating system updatesKeep your applications and operating system current with the latest
system updates. Turn on automatic updates to prevent potential attacks on older software.
7. Secure your wireless networkWi-Fi (wireless) networks at home are vulnerable to intrusion if
they are not properly secured. Review and modify default settings. Public Wi-Fi, a.k.a. “Hot Spots”, are also vulnerable. Avoid conducting financial or corporate transactions on these networks.
8. Avoid being scammedAlways think before you click on a link or file of unknown origin.
Don’t feel pressured by any emails, including pop-ups that threaten you to act immediately or else. Check the source of the message. Only trust websites with a URL that starts with https. Never reply to emails that ask you to verify your information or confirm your user ID or password.

partnership with the City of Austin’s Parks & Recreation Department (PARD) and based on extensive public input, the final draft of the proposal is currently scheduled for presentation to the Austin City Council on October 16, 2014.
Prior to the City Council meeting, several municipal commissions and committees will make recommendations regarding the Master Plan, including the Austin Parks & Recreation Board. To date, the Conservancy has received several letters in support of the Master Plan from neighborhood associations, community leaders, and the Austin Parks Foundation, among others.
The Master Plan provides a long-range vision for preserving and enhancing the natural, cultural, and recreational environment of the historically significant parkland in the heart of Austin. As stated in the report prepared by the landscape architecture firm Wallace, Roberts & Todd, LLC on the Conservancy’s behalf, the Master Plan “takes a position between status quo and radical makeover” to achieve these objectives.
"The draft Master Plan not only protects the natural environment of the park and adjacent greenbelt, it also dares to dream," said Gill. Among other things, it envisions an expansion of the shade canopy,
including the conservancy of existing legacy trees and the planting of new trees; the adaptation of the preserved 1920s-era Tudor Cottage as a public meeting place; the addition of new shaded picnic shelters and bathrooms; the development of an improved and extended trail system; the addition of new pedestrian bridges; and the creation of inviting gateways to improve access to the park.
The Conservancy and PARD began soliciting public input for the purpose of developing the Master Plan in the fall of 2013. A technical advisory group representing key municipal departments advised the planning team throughout the process of drafting this conceptual blueprint.
“During this process, we heard from over a thousand Austin residents,“ said Gill. “It's critical that the people of Austin continue to voice their support for this long-term vision for the park and adjacent greenbelt during the last stages of the City’s review, particularly when the City Council considers the Master Plan in mid-October.”
Interested persons may review the final draft of the Pease Park Master Plan report and its appendices at http://austintexas.gov/department/pease-district-park-master-plan.
