A thermistor is a temperature-sensing element composed of sintered semiconductor

material which exhibits a large change in resistance proportional to a small change in

temperature. Thermistors usually have negative temperature coefficients which means

the resistance of the thermistor decreases as the temperature increases.

Thermistors are made using a mixture of metals and metal oxide materials. Once mixed, the materials are formed and fired into the required shape. The thermistors can then be

used “as-is as dis!-style thermistors. or further shaped and assembled with lead wires

and coatings to form bead-style thermistors.

    THERMOCOUPLE

The basis of thermocouples was established by Thomas "ohann #eebec! in $%&$ when

he discovered that a conductor generates a voltage when sub'ected to a temperature

gradient. To measure this voltage, one must use a second conductor material which

generates a different voltage under the same temperature gradient. Otherwise, if the

same material was used for the measurement, the voltage generated by the measuringconductor would simply cancel that of the first conductor. The voltage difference

generated by the two materials can then be measured and related to the corresponding

temperature gradient. (t is thus clear that, based on #eebec!)s principle, thermocouples

can only measure temperature differences and need a !nown reference temperature

    to yield the abolute readings.
