A message from Ian Bowsher to the Barrenjoey Community

It is with a heavy heart that I write this email. I wish to inform you that I have recently

been appointed to the role of College Principal at Sydney Secondary College based in

Balmain, effective 12th October 2020 (just ten minutes from home). This means my final

day at Barrenjoey will be the end of this term, 25th September.

I have absolutely loved my tenure at Barrenjoey and thoroughly enjoyed watching the

school develop into the wonderful place of learning that it is today. When I arrived in

2008 I had plans to stay for six or seven years and then move closer to home, however,

the Barrenjoey community got under my skin and together, we created so many great

initiatives I just couldn’t leave.

Barrenjoey truly sits in the centre of a fabulous community and together we have

overcome many challenging times in the past thirteen years. I feel very confident that no

matter who is next to take over the reins at Barrenjoey, the school will continue to thrive

thanks to the outstanding staff who provide unparalleled leadership and care for the

young people who attend.

It's bittersweet to be leaving a school that I’ve enjoyed so much. I realise I have been

very fortunate. This place, this work, and its people have meant so much to me. I am

proud to have been a member of the Barrenjoey team. I’ll have more to say as the term

draws to a conclusion, however, I’d like to thank all the community members for the

level of support I have experienced at this very special school.

Kind regards

Ian Bowsher

LEARNING HUB LOWDOWN

This week the Lowdown has been written by one of our Senior students, Elise Inger. Elise

is a member of the SRC and has described the new space from a student’s perspective.

At the beginning of Term 3, Year 11 and 12 were privileged to be granted access to the

newly reconstructed Learning Hub and Senior Study space in the Library. The Hub was

altered in order to not only accommodate for students’ academic and educational needs but

also for their emotional and wellbeing, with the introduction of comfy sofas and beanbags,

background music and, best of all, lots of heating for the winter. The space is now a lot less

closed off, with a lot of the walls knocked down so that it is more open and inviting.

Additionally, the area is not only used by students, but also by teachers and classes who

often choose to spend lessons in the learning space where it’s warmer and more

comfortable than classrooms. This physical as well as atmospheric transformation of the

space has meant that students are more motivated to work harder and be more productive

during study sessions, and I'm sure will be appreciated by students in years to come.

PLOVERS HAVE HATCHED

The plovers have had a successful hatching (four chicks) and are now feeding their growing

family by moving around the back oval during daylight hours and returning to the nesting site

at night. This behaviour means the students may need to be moved on from their regular

areas for a short time while the family moves through/on. It will not be long until they are

moving around the entire school and will soon after that be able to fend for themselves (fly off

from danger) and not be a nuisance to anyone.

If you are on duty on the back oval I know you have your hands full with the students in the

COLA but please keep an eye out for the family and keep the students away from them.

ARTIST OF THE WEEK

Olive Castles

Year 7 Visual Arts

has completed an

excellent self-

portrait using the

technique. Her

drawing

demonstrates a

maturity in

technique, and the

completed drawing

bears a striking

resemblance to

Olive. Well done.
