The member was sitting in his official po- lice unmarked vehicle when he was at- tacked and robbed of his official 9mm firearm,” provincial police spokesper- son Constable Noloyiso Rwexana. The provincial police commission- er, Lieutenant General Khombinkosi Jula has expressed his heartfelt condo- lences to the widow, family and col- leagues of the slain member and has given his assurance that the criminals responsible for the attack will be sought with all the resources at the po- lice’s disposal. “An attack on any member of the police is an attack on the entire police service,” Jula says. Detective Lindekile Patrick Sikade served for 10 years at the station and in his wake leaves behind a wife and three children – the youngest being born just last month. Grassy Park police spokesperson Warrant Officer Wynita Kleinsmith says the station was saddened by the news. “He was a very good detective. He was hardworking, diligent, dedi- cated and an asset to Grassy Park. He will surely be missed by all his col- leagues. His dedication to Grassy Park police and the community he served will not be forgotten.” Police have called on the public to help with the investigation and to com- municate any information relating to the incident. Information can be relayed to War- rant Officer Alfred Baker of the Hawks on 071 351 7464 or report to Crime Stop on 08600 10111. All information will be treated confi- dentially. Detective shot and killed PARKWOOD Negativity run out CHEVON BOOYSEN @ChevonBooysen A group of 14 aspiring cricketers were recently praised for their efforts to be- come part of something more positive in their community. The youth all from Parkwood ranging be- tween the ages of nine and 15 – including two girls – received their certificates for taking part in a cricket clinic which was recently hosted through the efforts of the Voice of Parkwood as well as the St Augustine Crick- et club in Elfindale. Diego Francis, Anzio Francis, Darren Johnson, Charley Matong, Caden Meyer, Calum Swartz, Marco Theunis, Damian Vin- ier, Tresslin Fourie, Therlo Fourie, Cindy Cupido, Faried Cloete, Dayzuan van Dalen and Carla Cupido received their certificates at the Parkwood Community centre last week. Voice of Parkwood chairperson Paul Phil- ips says the community faces many challen- ges and the cricket clinic programme which was initiated during last year is a positive for the youth. “The biggest issues we face in this commu- nity is the gangsterism and drugs. However, through this cricket clinic programme we are looking at creating positivity for our youth in the area,” Philips says. As part of the initiative, Philips says they plan to take back open spaces in the area again and mentioned that a space has been identified in the area which they intend to earmark for the development of a sporting ground. “Currently we have no facilities in the ar- ea for our children to enjoy. Our open spaces and parks are being occupied by gangsters and unsavoury elements who pose a threat to our youth. We need to take back these spa- ces to create a safe haven again for our youth in the area,” he says. Philips further added it becomes a safety risk for children to move out of the area to practise their talents at other facilities. “We should not have to send our children out of the area so they can practise their sporting codes elsewhere. They should be af- forded this opportunity in their community. It becomes a safety risk when a child has to walk to other facilities to be able to practise their talents that can be used in their own community,” he says. SLAVE ROUTE CHALLENGE

Honour heritagestep by stepEARL HAUPT

@EarlHaupt

The annual Slave Route Challenge whichsees runners being taken on a route that

encompasses an array of South Africa’smost historical sites, has become a favour-ite on the calendar of novice and elite run-ners alike.

The race, taking place on Mother’s Day(Sunday 8May), howev-er has a much deeperand more personalmeaning, says eventspokesperson FatimaAllie.

Having been born inthe Bo-Kaap, Allie wasraised in Walmer Es-tate and went to schoolin District Six and is aself-professed defen-dant of the Cape Ma-lays.

“When it comes to theSlave Route Challengeitself, we look at our an-cestors who came fromIndonesia, Java andMalaysia. They were the ones who camewith all the skill. They were the builders. So my ancestors were not slaves per sé, myancestors were exiled from Indonesia to theCape,” says Allie. She goes on to say that because the slaves

were forced to work and interact with otherlabourers brought to the area, that is howall the cultures started to mix and that asa result started to weave the fabric whichmeshes South Africa’s rich history. “If youlook around, the oldest standing building is

the Castle of Good Hope. The Castle of GoodHope was built by the slaves. You look atCity Hall and the Grand Parade, all of theseiconic and old places and structures inCapeTown were all built by the slaves. Then yourealise that there are so many historicalsites throughout Cape Town that people didnot even know of,” adds Allie.Besides the historical aspect the race af-

fords itself to, Allie says that there is anamazing atmosphere of to-getherness on race day.

“It is the spirit of Ubuntuthat you feel. You will see agrandmother who has neverever walked (in an event) inher entire life. She is nowwalking the 5km with hergrandchildren because herdaughter and her husbandare going to be running the10kmwhile their teenager isrunning the 21km, so this isa family event.”

Allie reminded those whostill wish to participate inthe 21km race need to enteronline no later than Sunday24 April. She confirmed that

there will still be opportunities to enter theother three events (5km fun run/walk,10km run and 10km big walk) on Sunday 1May as well as Friday 6 and Saturday 7Mayat Cape Town’s City Hall. “Come and ex-plore this whole journey of the Slave RouteChallenge where you run through the Cas-tle, District Six, and Gardens, through theBo-Kaap and the Sea Point area and backonto the Grand Parade where you can seethe beauty of Cape Town.”V To enter visit www.iamrunningfor.co.za

Fatima Allie channels the spirit ofUbuntu when speaking about andwhile helping to organise theSlave Route Challenge.

The Slave Route Challenge will take runners past various historical sites linked to slavery

engineering students from America andwill materialise this project, says they arevery excited to bring this project to theschool. The mission of the Parkwood Technology

Centre is to create a safe environment thatempowers Parkwood learners and the com-munity to learn the skills they need to suc-ceed in the digital age, she says.“Parkwood Primary School teachers

want to use computers as a tool to improveteaching and learning, but the school doesnot have adequate the space and computersto make that possible. We will solve theseproblems by expanding and upgrading anexisting lab at Parkwood Primary Schooland replacing its outdated, dysfunctionalcomputers with more reliable technology,”Abbett explains. The new space has also incorporated safe-

ty, she says. “The new space will have extrasecurity features and enough capacity to ac-commodate entire classes of children, mak-ing it a more useful space for teaching andlearning. Additionally, the centre will pro-vide computer access to parents and othercommunity members who otherwise do nothave access to technology after schoolhours,” Abbett says. The project is an international collabora-

tion between Parkwood Primary School,Bottomup and Engineers for a Sustainable

World (ESW) at Stanford University.Abbett adds they need to need to raise

money for the building project and the newcomputers by June and so far have donorsfrom South Africa and the United States.“Many learners in Parkwood struggle in

school because gang violence, drug abuse, and tough family situations make it diffi-cult for them to perform their best. Schoolslike Parkwood Primary are dedicated to im-proving the lives of these children througheducation, but they are under-resourcedand can only do so much to combat largersocial issues in the area,” she says. The project will also enable teachers,

equipping themwithbetter tools to improveteaching and learning.“It will upgrade resources at the school,

giving teachers better tools to improveteaching and learning. And secondly, it willprovide a space for parents and learnersfrom schools in the area to access technolo-gy and training. Parkwood Estate does nothave any public computer access – no li-brary or internet cafe – so safe, affordablecomputer access at the ParkwoodTechnolo-gy Centre will make a big difference in thecommunity.”Abbett says the project has been in the

making since 2014 already.“This project has been in development

since January 2014. Parkwood Primarywaschosen largely because of the need demon-strated by the community, as well as thesuccessful interventions already started byeducation nonprofit Bottomup,” she says.Abbett says they are currently in need of

ten new or used laptops as donations to sup-ply the computer lab while they raise fundsfor technology.V To learn more about the project visit http://park-woodtechcentre.org. If you would like to make dona-tions visit www.tinyurl.com/givengainPTC.

Parkwood Primary is currently undergoing a technological makeover as the school will receivea new technology centre through the efforts of engineering students.

Former District Six residents are tired ofpromises and want action in their questfor restitution for their forcible removalfrom the area in the 1960s.At a meeting hosted by the District Six

Working Committee (D6WC), held on Sat-urday at theBlackpool SportsClub inSaltRiver, the hall was packed with peoplefromdifferent historically disadvantagedcommunities who came to hear how ur-ban restitution should be approached andimplemented by all the relevant stake-holders in a holistic fashion, startingwith the healing process. Some of the important guest speakers

included Diana Oliver from the Restitu-tion Foundation, Amelia September andMario Wanza of the Manenberg People’sForumaswell as local councillor AchmatWilliams.Shahied Ajam, chairperson of the orga-

nisation, said it is important that the com-mittee impress upon theminister of ruraldevelopment and land reform, GugileNkwinti; the City of Cape Town and allrelevant stakeholders to develop the en-tire 30 hectare vacant land in District Siximmediately and simultaneously, start-ingwith the third phasewhich is current-ly in progress. There is some urgent action to take

place with regard to the Good Hope Cen-tre, Ajam said.“Wewill legally oppose the City of Cape

Town in court for closing the doors of theGood Hope Centre to the public threeweeks ago when the City voted unani-mously to lease it out to a foreignTV com-pany for the next two years. The commit-tee and its coalition partners launched an

urgent application to court lastweek,” ex-plained Ajam. Also discussed was the need to identify

state-owned land within the city periph-ery for those who cannot be accommodat-ed in District Six.“Urbanisation is rapidly increasing

and everybodyhas a right to the city espe-cially those who were previously evictedand dispossessed during the apartheidera. Integration in the inner-city space isparamount. The walls of racial and spa-tial segregation can be broken down inDistrict Six.”Members also passed a unanimous res-

olution to the effect that the referencegroup (who represent the approximately1000 beneficiaries who claimed between1995 to 1998), be fused with the D6WC andform one entity that will speak with onevoice for all the people. The D6WC has amandate to represent over 300 familiesand is already a legally registered entitywith the Department of Trade and Indus-try.The D6WC, in addition to assisting the

people of District Six, also assist manyother previously disadvantaged commu-nities with their respective restitutionclaims in areas like Ndabeni, Pinelands,Constantia, Goodwood, Newlands Clare-mont and Simon’s Town.“To push the envelope even further the

D6WC is planning a major march to par-liament during July to create an aware-ness to local, provincial and national gov-ernment that the people are serious aboutdignity restoration and coming back tothe city, sooner rather than later. Thepeople are gatvol of waiting for over 21years now.”V For more information about the committee call021 801 8437 or email [email protected]

I played soccer and cricket and thiswas my way of getting away form the evilsof society. And this is why we encourage

parents to enrol their children in sportingcodes and want them to become involved inprogrammes who expose them to their tal-ents and our club is always open to the com-munity,” he says.Philips has encouraged parentswhowanttheir children to enrol for the cricket clinic.“We recently held a soccer tournamenthosted by Oasis on the tarmac outsidewhere Jayden Boltman was killed a fewmonths ago. A team of six women are taking it to thestreets to do their jobs “better thanmen”.The City of Cape Town recently intro-duced its all women team from Heideveld –who fixes potholes and do maintenancework on footways and stormwater pipes –and the energetic team say they are morethan capable of doing their job better thanmen. This all-female roads-repair team is thefourth to be appointed by the City of CapeTown and is part of theWomen atWork Pro-gramme. The programmehas beennominat-ed for the fourth annualWomen inConstruc-tion Awards in the category for the most in-novative programme. The all-female roads repair team is basedat the Transport for Cape Town (TCT) depotin Heideveld and has been appointed as partof the Expanded Public Works Programme(EPWP)within TCT to repair and domainte-nance in Heideveld, Manenberg, Tambo Vil-lage, Athlone, Surrey Estate and the areasadjacent to Jakes Gerwel Drive.Mayco member for transport, Brett Her-ron, says the programme is to empowerwomen in the workplace.“Women at Work is a gender transforma-tion programmewithinTCTwhich is collab-oratively implemented by the TCT TrainingAcademy, the EPWP and selected roads de-pots across the city. The purpose of this pro-gramme is to empower women in the work-place by providing themwith skills forman-ual work that is generally associated withmen,” he says. With the skills and entrepreneurial abili-ties they develop during the 10-month em-ployment period, thesewomenwill be betterequipped to find placement in the perma-nent job market, Herron says. The team was established in March 2016and consists of Kashiefa Beck (34) from Hei-develd, Nomzamo Feni (43) fromGugulethu,JoyleenMelton-Gordon (40) fromHeideveld,Pumla Mfana (39) from Gugulethu, IlhaamEly (39) from Heideveld and Akeelah Abra-hams (34) from Heideveld. They follow in the footsteps of the all-fe-male teamsof theTCTdepots inNdabeni (in-troduced in August 2015), Fish Hoek (intro-duced in November 2015), and Kuils River(introduced in February 2016).“The team from Heideveld now countsamong the 24 pioneers of a long-termprocesswhereby the City is tackling gender trans-formation in the transport realm. Womenare generally under-represented in thetransport sector – for example, within TCT,women constitute only 3,4% of those in-volved with the physical maintenance ofroads and stormwater infrastructure,” heexplains.Herron says he is confident that thisproject will assist in changing perceptionsabout the type of work that women can do.The fourth annual Women in Construc-tion Awards will take place in Johannes-burg on Tuesday 10 May.“The City is extremely proud of this pro-gramme. I am confident that it will also berecognised on a national level as one of themost advanced and game-changing gendertransformation projects in the country,”Herron says. The women underwent a physical assess-

ment to test their ability to perform the typeof work required and they were interviewedand evaluated bymembers of the depotman-agement.“A total of 24 women would have benefit-ted through theWomen atWorkProgrammeby the end of the financial year. We havespent approximately R1m on this pro-gramme. We now aim to establish 10 all-fe-male roads repair teams accommodating an-other 60 women in the next financial year,”Herron adds. The 24 women will exit the programme onThursday 30 June. Thereafter, TCT will em-bark on a new recruitment process to findcandidates to replace them, as well as to ex-pand the programme with a further sixteams situated at other suitable roads depotsacross the city.

LEGAL TALK WITH DENZIL

Following instructionOver the years I have been askedmany times whether an employercan dismiss an employee, if theemployee refuses to obey an in-struction that falls outside oftheir job description?

This has always been a trickyquestion as the employee’s job de-scription is not always clearlyand precisely defined in their em-ployment contracts.

It is a well-known fact that em-ployees have a duty to act in goodfaith at the workplace, includingthe duty of employees to be subor-dinate and to comply with the in-structions of the employer in re-gard to their duties and work.

Employers have, however, de-veloped job descriptions in orderto allocate certain responsibili-ties to certain employees and tocreate a framework to promote ef-ficiencies and to ensure accounta-bility. The question remains, towhat extent does this impact anemployee’s refusal to performcertain tasks which fall outsidethe scope of their job description?

In Noosi vs Exxaro Matla Coal(June 2015), the Labour Court ad-dressed the issue of insubordina-tion and confirmed an importantlegal principle in regard thereto.

The case involved an electri-cian who had refused to obey theinstructions of the senior fore-man – to cease the operation of aconveyor belt which was operat-ing in dangerous conditions. Theemployee was charged with, interalia, gross insubordination anddismissed. He referred the matterto the CCMA, where the commis-

sioner found that the employeracted appropriately and as a re-sult the dismissal was fair. Theemployee then took the matter onreview where the Labour Courtfound that the test for insubordi-nation is not whether the instruc-tions fall within the job descrip-tion of the employee, but ratherwhether the instructions werereasonable and lawful. The courtheld and supported the position.

Should it be shown that the in-struction was unlawful, it wouldbe the end of the inquiry. If it isfound that the instruction waslawful, the expectation is that theemployee, to whom such instruc-tion was issued, should have com-plied. It will have little, if any, todo with whether the instructionis related to the employee’s job de-scription because it will never bea justification for an employee torefuse lawful instructions merelybecause the instructions are nothis or her direct functions.

This has a two-fold lesson forboth the employer and employee:

. Employers should regularlyensure their employees’ job de-scriptions are accurate.

. Employees still have an over-riding duty of good faith to theiremployers, whether the instruc-tion falls within their job descrip-tion or not, and a failure to com-ply with instructions which arereasonable and lawful may be suf-ficient grounds for dismissal.V This column was contributed by DenzilJacobs, an admitted advocate with ex-pertise in commercial law. Love isn’t divisionI would like to comment onDallas Broughton’s letter inPeople’s Post of 3 April(“No mercy for those whorape, murder”).

It is hard to fathom thatMr Broughton believes abetter world can comeabout when what heproposes is but replacingone evil with another.Creating even more divi-sion in society than therealready is can only contrib-ute to more of the sameproblems, no solutions.

I believe that it is onlywhen I can let go of my

fear and take a genuineinterest in another fellowhuman being that changecan possibly come about. To condemn another’sactions is to not under-stand. Love does not divide.Trust begets trust. I, too,can fail and go astray. Thepotential for evil is also inme.

May Mr Broughton oneday find that where loverules the world is changed, one small but significantmoment at a time.

Pensioners bewareOn the Good Friday Ireceived a call from awoman asking if I receive agrant or pension. I said nobut my husband getspension. She then asked formy husband’s ID number. When I asked why she saidshe is calling from Sassaand they are doing up-grades. My husband thentold her that he doesn’tgive out his details toanyone. She then said that

Racing to create safer streetsTIYESE JERANJI

@jeranji

Women fromdifferent organisa-tions are in a race to win

against gender-based violence andabuse.Brave.RUNwill be taking part in

a 30km run from Khayelitsha toCape Town to promote a culture ofnon-violence in society – especiallyagainst women and children. The racewill takeplace onSatur-

day 23 April.Transport will be provided to

runners who plan to complete theentire route, departing from Heri-tage Square toKhayelitsha at 07:00.Organised by Rock Girl, a grass-

roots movement that inspires, en-courages and invests in womenand girls, the event has been in-spired by the tragic deaths of twoteenage girls, Sinoxolo Mafevukafrom Khayelitsha and FranziskaBlochliger fromTokai (“Gender vi-olence outcry”, People’s Post, 12April).Both girls were brutally raped

and murdered just a few metresfrom their families. The races also looks to create

awareness about the countlesswomen who have experienced vio-lent verbal and physical attacks.Founder of Rock Girl, India

Baird, race organiser Linda Dokeand runner Lynn Davis have com-mitted to creating a culture of non-violence.They will come together with

other runners to complete the30km course through the streets ofKhayelitsha, Mitchell’s Plain,Nyanga, Gugulethu, Manenberg,Lavender Hill, Rylands, Langa andWoodstock, passing police stations

in eacharea and endingat theRockGirl benches onHeritage Square inCape Town.Brave.RUN is inviting women,

girls, boys and men from all com-munities to join in along the way, running or walking for a few me-tres or kilometres. Check pointsand water stations will be at policestations in each area, and trans-port will be provided at each policestation to take runners who needlifts into town.Baird believes the race sends a

message of support to all womenand girls, no matter where theylive, letting everyone along theway know that they are not afraid, but united.

“We are hoping that theBrave.RUN will become an annualevent. Rock Girls, trained as youthreporters and photographers, willfollow the run in an overland trucksponsored by Africa Travel Co, in-terviewing girls and women alongthe way about the conditions intheirneighbourhoods and the chal-lenges they face daily.”Cape Town is host to some of the

most beautiful runs in the world –from the Two Oceans Marathon tothe Cape Town Marathon, as wellas extraordinary trail runs like theTable Mountain Challenge.Elite runners, including Linda

Doke, have committed to runningthis event.

“We have some of the most beau-tiful places to run, butwe also havethehighest incidence of violence inthe world against girls and women– our most beautiful citizens.“For one day, let’s come together

to make the streets safe for every-one, everywhere across CapeTown.”Baird says the race is an impor-

tant one for the girls they workwith.“Rock Girl was inspired by a

group of Grade 5 girls who weren’table to participate in the afterschool running programme be-cause of gang violence and abusefromolder boys andmen. This racedemonstrates the girls ongoing

commitment to making their owncommunities, and all of SouthAfri-ca, safe for everyone.”Rock Girl is partnering with the

travel and tourism industry, aswell as with artists and designersto create safe spaces for all peopleacross Africa.Rock Girl has installed 55 Safe

Space public benches around CapeTownandJohannesburg, aswell asprovided after-school, weekend, and holiday leadership training toover 400 young people who live onthe front lines of some of the mostdangerous communities in SouthAfrica.V Contact Baird on 082 734 4569 or [email protected].

Dreaming of theOlympic GamesTIYESE JERANJI

@jeranji

“Giving up on yourself is not an option;striving for success is the only way to

a better and happy life.”These are the words that have kept teen

athlete Carla Johnson (18) from Retreat mo-tivated.

In spite of her challenges and lack of fi-nancial means at times, it never crosses hermind to stop what she really loves doing.Johnson is the best in running, long jumpand heptathlon and she has medals to showfor it.

However, at times she struggles to makeends meet and misses competitions becauseshe doesn’t have money. Her love for athlet-ics started when she was eight years old, in-fluenced by brothers who also love sport.

She has attained her Western Provincecolours and has represented the province atdifferent national competitions.

WhirlwindWhen she takes to the track, she runs like

a whirlwind. Her success on the track hasearned her national colours and the oppor-tunity to represent the country in Botswa-na, China and the USA.

Johnson says this is her life.“I really enjoy it. Sport is my passion,”

she says.Taking from her role models Sonja van

der Merwe and Usain Bolt, she is deter-mined to be the best in whatever she does. Now she is eyeing the 2020 Olympics andsays taking part will be a dream come true.

“I’m training so hard. I want to be partof the team so that I can show the world

want I can do.”Raised by a single mother, she says some-

times she misses sporting events becauseher mother simply cannot afford it.

Her wish is to have a sponsor who willhelp her with the sporting gear that sheneeds to take part in sport.

“My mother struggles a lot, but she triesto make ends meet.”

Her mother, Berenice, says Carla reallyloves what she does, although it hasn’t beeneasy for them but they haven’t given up.

“When she has tournaments coming up Ido fundraisingandeven sell stuff so that shecan at least have pocket money. She is verypassionate about this, so I support her allthe time.”

Carla Johnson (18) is passionate about sportsand she is appealing for a good Samaritan tosponsor her so that she doesn’t miss anymore competitions PHOTO: TIYESE JERANJI

Steenberg shinesin charity driveThe Steenberg Golf Club’s Ladies section

has set a solid benchmark at the startof this year’s club competitions for the

Sanlam Cancer Challenge as they raisedR19 000 in the effort to support the CancerAssociation of South Africa (Cansa).

The Sanlam Cancer Challenge is South Af-rican golf’s biggest charity drive in the fightagainst cancer and has teed off its 23rd yearat golf clubs around the country, with thou-sands of amateur golfers joining together totry and beat the over R3.5m raised last year.

From March to July, amateur golfersaround South Africa will take part in theirlocal golf club’s Sanlam Cancer Challengegolf dayswith the double aimof raisingmon-ey for CANSA as well as trying to qualify fortheir respective regional finals.

The winners of the regional finals, whichwill be played from July to August, will thenqualify for the National Finals to be playedon both the Gary Player Country Club andLost City Golf Club courses at Sun City from9 to 2 October.

And in this shared spirit of being proact-ive in the battle against cancer, 48 golfersfrom the Steenberg Ladies section did theirbit to work together as “Wealthsmiths” forthe greater good of their community.

“The Sanlam Cancer Challenge is a popu-

lar event on the Steenberg Ladies golf calen-dar. There has always been overwhelmingsupport of this fundraising initiative atSteenberg as many of our members are can-cer survivors whilst others have lost friendsand family members to this illness,” said DiBrooks, Steenberg Ladies committee mem-ber.

“The Sanlam Cancer Challenge repre-sents not only an opportunity to raise fundsfor a worthy cause but also for our membersto compete regionally and nationally. Steen-berg members have historically done well inthe Regional Finals and last year two of ourmembers, Peter Terrblanche and Gwen Or-tlepp, qualified for the finals, with Gwen fin-ishing second in the A Division nationally. It was a fantastic opportunity for these play-ers to play at Sun City and to meet a numberof interesting players from around the coun-try.”

The purpose of the Sanlam Cancer Chal-lenge is to raise funds and awareness annu-ally for the fight against cancer. In 2015, atotal of 35 863 golfers played in 780 club com-petitions held around the country in supportof CANSA’s prevention programmes and pa-tient care support throughout the year.V For more information visit www.sanlamcancerchal-lenge.co.za
