Shebeen runs for 15 yearsTAMMY PETERSEN
A SHEBEEN that is believed to havebeen operating sporadically for over
15 years, has residents spitting fire be-cause police operations at the Otteryhouse have failed to stop the alcohol fromflowing.
Locals claim that vagrants and homelesspeople are a common sight in Doig Road, andthe sale of liquor continues to increase thenumber of unsavoury characters loitering inthe street.
A resident, who asks to be known only asAnne, says she regularly notices “dirty-look-ing people” making their way past her house.
“Once I decided to follow them in case theyplanned to break in at one of the neighbours. But instead I saw the three guys going to thathouse and coming out a few minutes laterclutching a bag.
“My friend later told me that the home own-er is dealing in cheap liquor.”
An elderly man says people living in “poor-er neighbouring areas make a voetpaadjie” tothe house at all hours.
“Once I sprayed them with my hose pipeand told them to stop coming here. Theyswore at me and said they only wanted to getdop. They aren’t even shy to say it!”
He says he and a few neighbours onceplanned to speak to the shebeen owner, but“thought better of it”.
“This isn’t the type of person I even wantto waste my breath on. The law will eventual-ly catch up with him and then we will see whohas the last laugh.” People’s Post visited thearea on Friday and was approached by unem-ployed men who sit at the corner of the road.
“Everyone knows he sells the dop,” a mantold the reporter as four others nodded inagreement.
“When we wait here in the morning and no-
body picks us up, we see the people walkingto the shebeen down the road. They say heis cheap.”
Another man says he “always” buys his liq-uor at the house as it’s on his route home.
“I have been going there for years. It’s nota secret. I always thought he had permissionto sell.”
Warrant Officer Robert Lakey, the spokes-person for Lansdowne police, says officersare aware of the liquor business at the houseand that regular operations are held.
“On Friday, we held an undercover opera-tion at the house where a man was sent withR10 with the instruction to purchase liquor.
“He returned with the wine and confirmedthat they were selling alcohol illegally.
“Our members raided the house, recover-ing the R10 and the man who had helped himwas arrested.”
The 60-year-old man was charged withdealing in liquor, and appeared in the Wyn-
berg Magistrate’s Court on Monday.Lakey was unable to confirm the outcome
as the docket has not yet returned from court. However, police believe that the man isn’t
the person behind the operations and that hewas only working at the house.
Lakey adds that numerous searches havebeen carried out over the years, but that ow-ing to the sporadic nature in which tradingtakes place, the successes at the house havenot been “major”.
“We are keeping an eye on the operationsat the property, but we need anyone with in-formation or who notices anything untowardat the house to phone the station on (021) 700-9000 so that the matter can be followed up.”
On Saturday 16 July theCape Town City Hall wasthe venue for a gala dinner evening that raisedR3 million for the NelsonMandela Foundation. The evening was attended by 500 selectedguests, including formerSpringbok rugby playerChester Williams, modelKimora Lee Simmons,Oscarnominated actorDjimon Hounsou andChelsy Davy.

EXCLUDING MATTRESS
Dedicated Red Cross staff recognisedALMOST 60 employees of the Red Cross WarMemorial Children’s Hospital have receivedawards for prolonged years of service to theWestern Cape Department of Health. Threeof the 56 recipients were recognised for 40
years of service, 17 received 30-year serviceawards and 25 were rewarded for 20 years ofservice, exclusively to Red Cross, and 11 for20 years of service to the Western Cape De-partment of Health.
.
The nasty electricityprice shockerI’M beginning to think that Eskom em-ployees and city councillors are toowell paid to understand the impact ofthe electricity price increases.
They talk in percentages but we pay inrands, lots of rands. And they have madeit extremely difficult to make direct com-parisonsbychanging the tariffs blocks, byusing and then discarding daily servicecharges and changing the rules to usecombinations of tariffblocks.
It all makes the storyabout as confusing as acellphone contract.
To get an idea of theimpact in real terms, Idug out some of my oldelectricity accounts so Inow have the actual fig-ures in black and white. They may not be com-pletely representativebut I’m doing the best Ican. So here we go:
In a 29-day periodover July and August in2008 I used 745 kWh orunits of electricity. Be-fore VAT that costR425.48. At today’s tariffs the cost wouldbe R815.80.
So in threeyears thebill has almost dou-bled.Now if you’re a councillor earningabout R30 000 a month for a part-time job, that is small potatoes.
And if you chair a subcouncil or haverisen to an exalted position on the Mayor-al Committee, it is petty cash. And at Eskom, where the average salaryis nearly R500 000 a year, it must be reallydifficult to understand why people arecomplaining.
Now let’s look at where the money goes.To do that we need to know what the Citypays for the electricity it buys from Es-kom.
In July 2008, Eskom’s average sellingprice was 24.4 cents a unit, but Eskom haswholesale and retail customers and CapeTown, as one of the biggest wholesale cus-tomers, pays less than the average. Wedon’t know how much less, so 24.4 centsa unit is the best figure we have.
So, in July 2008, my 745 units nettedR181.78 for Eskom, and the City grabbedthe other R243.37.
Three years later Eskom’s average sell-ing price is 50.37 cents, soits share of a bill for 745units would be R375.26.The City will get the oth-er R440.54.
So the City is still get-ting more than half themoney. We know that Es-kom is spending massiveamounts on new powerstations, but what is theCity doing with itsshare?
The City’s distributionand service costs shouldbe rising in line with in-flation, but Eskom’s arerising in line with the in-flated cost of their over-priced power stations.
Last year, when Eskom tariffs went upby 26,3%, the National Energy Regulatorsaid municipalities should increase theirtariffs by just 15%.
But Cape Town and the other munici-palitiesmoreor less toldNersa to get knot-ted, and bumped up prices by 25% andmore. Electricity is Cape Town’s biggestsource of revenue. The City expects reve-nue of R8,1 billion from electricity salesthis year, nearly twice as much as theR4,6 billion from property rates.
So you can see just how profitable it isto use the Eskom increases as an excuseto hike our tariffs over and above what isreasonable.
And we pay VAT on top of that!

Robbers have asmashing time atintersectionTAMMY PETERSEN
MOTORISTS are being advisedto exercise extra caution whenapproaching the intersection atJan Smuts Drive and LansdowneRoad, after a recent surge insmash-and-grab incidents by loi-terers who frequent the set of ro-bots.
This comes after a 49-year-oldwoman was accosted by two rob-bers who made off with her hand-bag while she was waiting for therobot to change on Wednesdaymorning. Warrant Officer RobertLakey, the spokesperson forLansdowne police, says patrols inand around the intersection havebeen increased owing to the spikein the number of opportunistic rob-beries at the busy intersection.
“The woman had pulled up at therobot and as she waited for thelights to turn green, two men ap-
proached her vehicle and smashedthe passenger side window. Theygrabbed her bag from the front seatand ran off towards Hanover Park,”he explains.
Various complaints have been re-ceived about criminal activity atthe intersection, but very few mo-torists lay charges, Lakey contin-ues.
“We have also heard that numer-ous attempts to rob drivers havebeen made, but very few formalcomplaints have been received.
“We would like to encourage any-one who has been hit or has almostfallen prey to these guys to come tothe station so that we can followup.” He advises that drivers shouldnot leave their valuables on thefront seat, but instead secure themin the boot or out of sight.
“It also seems that mostly womenare being targeted, especially thosedriving fancy car models. We ad-vise them to be especially careful.” NUMBERS BOOST: Nine hundred students were officially sworn in as police constables at a graduation ceremo
ny held at the Good Hope Christian Centre in Ottery on Friday 15 July. Wellwishers provide a silver liningWellwishers provide a silver liningANDRE BAKKES
NEARLY every morning the angelicvoice of 85-year-old Stella Wolhuter
fills the halls of Beit-ul-Aman Home forthe Aged.
“Oh what a beautiful morning, oh what abeautiful day, we are so blessed and content-ed, everything’s coming our way,” she sings.
Her uninhibited proclamation is conta-gious, and soon everyone within earshothums the tune to themselves.
The 72 residents have been given a chanceto live out their golden years in relative com-fort.
Most of these frail residents are of the Is-lamic faith, so the home is run on Islamicprinciples, though it prides itself on beingmulti-cultural.
Beit-ul-Aman has been serving the commu-nity since 1979, and was initially created toprovide specialised care for Muslims in par-ticular, since there wasn’t a similar place forpoorer seniors to go to.
Thirty years later and the home is still theonly facility of its kind in the Western Cape.
As a result, the demand for residency ishigh, so the representatives of the home have
to first do house visits to see if there isn’t anyother alternative for the person seeking ac-commodation. “We don’t want to be a dump-ing ground,” says Naadir Agherdien, the cur-rent chairperson of the board.
“In our community there is a strong feelingthat there shouldn’t be old age homes, sincethe family must take care of them, but thesedays it is difficult. Some even forget about ourelders.”
Living life in the fast lane has its draw-backs – the most tragic of these is that manyfamilies can also not give the necessary careto its oldest members.
The options for those who need special careis very limited, especially if they are Muslim.
While Beit-ul-Aman receives a monthlygrant from the Department of Social Develop-ment, it mostly relies on donations from thegeneral public to help make ends meet andkeep its doors open to those in need.
Their operational costs alone are morethan R1 million rand a year, so these dona-tions are essential for the running of the ha-ven.
“The average shortfall for operational ex-penses comes to about R80 000 or R90 000 amonth,” says Agherdien, before adding thatthey have to raise the money themselves by
having at least one fundraising event amonth.
Thenext fundraiser is a golf day inOctober,a popular event and a highlight on their cal-endar.
In 2009 the home very nearly had to closeits doors, since the economic downturn sawdonations drying up.
The Oasis Crescent Fund Trust intervenednot a moment too soon, and stepped in tomake a generous donation of R1 million.
This ensured that the home could build upa reserveof funds, but theyare always inneedof help from the community.
Agherdien says many old age homes havenot been completely fire-compliant, so afterone home was ravaged a few months ago, allwere ordered to bring in sweeping changes.
They must now become compliant by theend of July or August, which means theymust dip into that reserve fund.
It will set them back about R300 000.This is just a once-off payment, but their
biggest expense is for adult nappies. All of this just serves as extra motivation
for their valiant sponsors, who will undoubt-edly come to the home’s rescue once again, says Agherdien.
Its dependence on the private sector is the
lifeblood of the home, since companies haveto date not followed the sterling example setby Oasis or the well-wishers within the com-munity.
Funds are, of course, not the only thing theresidents need.
Some of them have no family to speak of,and become desperately lonely.
Volunteers come in to keep them company, but there is always space for more.
On 1 July superintendent Zulphaa Hassenwas appointed, but apart from her, the staffis almost solely made up of contracted volun-teers.
“The need for volunteers will continue, butthey can’t run the place. So there is a needfor qualified personnel to address the resi-dents’ needs. Now with Zulphaa, most of thiswill be managed and we will run the place bet-ter,” says Agherdien.
On Mandela Day (yesterday July 18), Islam-ic Relief sent 10 doctors to the home to holda health programme, and do some much-needed exercises with the residents.
Agherdien says he cannot thank donorsenough, but in the same breath he imploreseveryone who can lend a hand to step forwardand make a difference.

SINGING TO HER HEART’S CONTENT: StellaWolhuter (85) makes up for her lack of eyesightwith a singing voice that moves the world.
ON THEIR TOES: “Domino convener” AmienNieftagodien (80) plays dominoes with someof the residents on a regular basis.
ACCORDING to www.didyouknow.org, the first public television pictureswere transmitted in 1926. The first TV interview was made with Irish actressPeggy O’Neil in April 1930. The first televised sporting event was a Japaneseelementary school baseball game, broadcast in September 1931.

New hub for communityTHE City of Cape Town’s MayoralCommittee Member for CommunityServices, Councillor Tandeka Gqada, officially opened the Lotus River Rec-reation Hub on Saturday 16 July.
The new hub is part of the Sport, Recre-ation and Amenities Department’s strate-gy to bring sustainable activities and pro-grammes back to community centres. Sit-uated in the department’s District 2Region, the hub will offer a range of activ-ities, including aerobics, arts and crafts, board games, dancing and table tennis, amongst others.
A recreation study conducted acrossthe Cape Metropole showed that only24,6% of adult residents in Cape Townparticipate in physical activities in theirspare time, yet 60% rate themselves ashealthy. Almost 90% of Capetonians feelthat sport and recreation is important forcommunities in Cape Town. Capetoniansare most interested in recreational pro-grammes such as health and fitness, arts, crafts and games – rather than formalsporting codes such as soccer and cricket.
The department embarked on a projectto identify specific facilities within eachdistrict for the establishment of recrea-tion hubs. These hubs are the core facili-
ties at which various recreation pro-grammes and activities will take place ona regular basis.
“The research findings confirm that anumber of the Sport, Recreation andAmenities Department’s facilities, pro-grammes and events are well-targeted,and are making a positive difference tothe lives of many people, both young andold. Conversely, some of the findingsidentify areas for improvement. This re-search will help to steer our grassrootsdevelopment programmes, whereby thehubs are used as centres for communityupliftment,” said Gqada.
“We regard sport and recreation as animportant development tool – contribut-ing not only to youth development, but al-so to the development of communitiesand contributing to the fostering of socialcohesion,” said the City’s Director forSport, Recreation and Amenities, GertBam.
District 2 Region comprises Retreat,Ottery, Lotus River, Parkwood, GrassyPark, Elfindale, Steenberg, Seawinds,Claremont, Hout Bay, Newlands, Plum-stead, Wynberg, Mowbray, Diep River,Simon’s Town, Muizenberg, Fish Hoek,Kommetjie, Kalk Bay, Clovelly, MistyCliffs and Ocean View.

Residents eager to host world’s loudest sportHANRIE BOSCH
ATLANTIC SEABOARD residentscan look forward to driving on For-mula 1-standard roads by Septem-ber 2013 if plans are approved tobring the loudest sport in the worldto Cape Town.
The proposed Monaco-style rac-ing track will wind its way past5,3 km of iconic Cape Town land-marks, such as the V&A Water-front, Cape Town Stadium and Ta-ble Bay Harbour.
The route will start and end in theCape Town stadium, and will alsomake its way through the streets ofGreen Point, Sea Point and MouillePoint. People’s Post took to thestreets to find out how residents feelabout hosting the richest, and loud-est, sport in the world, and surpris-ingly the idea was met with over-whelming enthusiasm by local resi-dents.
Harry Berry is a local Sea Pointresident who says that he is readyfor the noise and excitement of aFormula 1 race on his doorstep.
“It’s the best thing in the world tobring the Formula 1 here. It is aworld-class event that will be verygood for the area and for the entireSouth Africa.
“I love the noise of the Harleyswhen they drive down the road, andI will love to have the roar of For-mula One cars in the area.”
The Cape Town Grand Prix BidCompany has proposed the inner-city street circuit, and is one ofthree companies that will be pre-senting their plans to Formula 1boss, Bernie Ecclestone, in the nextfew months. Spokesperson, EstherHenderson, said that the Monaco-style racing track was proposed forCape Town due to its “sexy loca-tion”. “This location will immedi-ately identify Cape Town and show-case what we have to offer to theworld. It will help to position CapeTown even further as a world-classtourist destination.”
Atlantic Seaboard resident, Vic-tor Ndalama, also feels that Cape
Town needs an event like this toshowcase its abundance of naturalbeauty to the world.
“It will be a mind-opener for therest of the world to have such anevent here, and I think that every-one here will be up for the noise fora few days in order to show theworld what we have.”
Councillor Grant Pascoe, Mayor-al Committee Member for Tourism,Events and Marketing, said that theCity had not yet been approachedwith a proposal, but that hostingsuch an event was in line with theCity’s goal to establish Cape Townas the events capital of South Afri-ca. “Events of this magnitude bringhuge benefits for all Capetonians inthe form of tourist rands spent inour city, increased exposure, andinvestment in the city.”
Constanza Colorito agrees withthis statement, and feels that thistype of event will do a lot for CapeTown’s international status.
“It is very good for Cape Town, asit will bring more tourists and itwill boost the economy.”
Jaco Swanepoel is also excited tohave the world get a taste of SouthAfrican culture and food.
“This area does not differ muchfrom other coastal countries likeMonaco and Brazil, and it will giveforeign visitors a chance to experi-ence a taste of South African cul-ture and food. This area is beautifuland the world needs to experienceit.” Henderson admitted that theywere concerned about how resi-dents would react to having theworld’s loudest sport on their door-step. Residents in the area needed
to be taken into consideration be-fore the plans could be taken fur-ther. Cedric Stuurman feels thatthe noise from the event will notmatter to the local residents, asthere are far more advantages thandisadvantages.
“A lot of people in Cape Town willenjoy this event, and it will alsobring ina lot of tourists, so thenoisereally will not matter during sucha festive event.”
However, Pat Waddle says thatshe has some “mixed feelings”about the Formula 1 coming to herdoorstep.
“I think it is great, but I also thinkthat there will be a lot of oppositiondue to the noise, but I do not reallymind as it will be a great boost forthe area and I would definitely gowatch it!”
ANDRE BAKKES
THE possibility exists that Cape Towncould be hosting a Formula 1 Grand
Prix within the next two to three years.
The economic spin-offs are expected togreatly benefit the entire Western Cape, butthe precise location of the race is far from fi-nalised.
One of the three possible venues is a Mona-co-style race track that will wind its way past5,3 kilometres of iconic Cape Town land-marks, such as the V&A Waterfront, CapeTown Stadium and Table Bay Harbour.
The route will start and end in the stadium, and will wind through the streets of GreenPoint, Sea Point and Mouille Point.
The chairperson of the Green Point Rate-payers’ and Residents’ Association (GPRRA),Bob Goebel, is however, totally against it be-ing held at this venue.“I’m speaking on myown behalf,” he says. The GPRRA will onlydiscuss their official stance this Wednesday.
“I object due to three reasons. First, the in-frastructure around the stadium, Beach andBay roads is built to reduce speed to 40km/hbecause it is a pedestrian-friendly area - upto 12 000 people go to the park on a weeklybasis. My second objection comes down toecology. Twenty thousand litres of fuel gasper race will be spewed into the atmosphere.Thirdly, the noise levels would be amplifiedup the hill because the whole Green Point isreally a giant amphitheatre,” he warns. Peo-
ple’s Post will reveal GPRRA’s formal objec-tions in the near future.
The other two bids involve new tracks be-ing built at the airport or near Atlantis on theWest Coast. Even though much has to beagreed upon before a race of such magnitudecan be held on these shores, CEO of CapeTown Routes Unlimited, Calvyn Gilfellan, says a Formula 1 race in the region can becompared to the World Cup in terms of tour-ism – the only difference being that the GrandPrix is a yearly event. “It will be more sus-tainable than the World Cup, and would un-doubtedly be a huge injection into the touristindustry,” he says.
“Also, like the World Cup, it would presentimmediate spin-offs. Work would be created, but the flip-side is of course that there wouldhave to be huge investments from the publicsector,” continues Gilfellan.
“I don’t watch the sport myself, but I knowCapetonians are very interested in motor-sport.”
Regional chairperson of Motorsport SAWestern Cape, Joyce Dolinschek, verifiesthis notion. “I work with interested young-sters every day, and they all want to be thenext Sebastian Vettel. It is the pinnacle forall youngsters to aspire to. Our locals love allkinds of motorsport,” she confirms, beforeadding that it would be “brilliant” for thesport. According to Dolinschek, it would alsocreate a valuable opportunity for 18 to 26-year-old “petrol heads” in Cape Town to leavetheir illegal and dangerous “drifting” fasci-
nation behind once they saw how profession-ally the sport was run and how many safetyprecautions went into a race.
CouncillorGrantPascoe,MayoralCommit-tee Member for Tourism, Events and Market-ing for the City of Cape Town, applied thebrakes ever so slightly when he recently said:“There is a long road ahead before this canbe realised. The City has not yet been ap-proached with a proposal to host the Formula1 Grand Prix in Cape Town. We will only con-sider the prospect of hosting the event oncewe have been presented with a proposal. Itwill then have to go through all council proc-esses, including public participation, to en-sure that the views of the local residents aretaken into consideration.” People’s Post tookto the streets to find out how residents feelabout hosting the richest, and loudest, sportin the world, and the idea was met with rea-
sonable enthusiasm. Harry Berry is a localSea Point resident who says that he is readyfor the noise and excitement of a Formula 1race on his doorstep. “It’s the best thing inthe world to bring the Formula 1 here. It isa world-class event that will be very good forthe area and for the entire South Africa.”
Cedric Stuurman feels that the noise fromthe event will not matter to the local resi-dents, as there are far more advantages thandisadvantages. “A lot of people in Cape Townwill enjoy this event, and it will also bring ina lot of tourists.”
However, Pat Waddle says that she hassome “mixed feelings” about the Formula 1coming to her doorstep. “I think it is great, but I also think that there will be a lot of oppo-sition due to the noise, but I do not reallymind as it will be a great boost for the areaand I would definitely go and watch it!”

Fire leaves family with almost nothingLILLIAN AMOS
AN OTTERY family wasleft with little after a fire, apparently started by va-grants, spread to a con-tainer where all their sup-plies were stored in theearly hours of Saturday 9July.
The family of five wereliving in a container as theLeon Court flat they wereliving in, just opposite theOttery Bruce Road Commu-nity Centre, was being up-graded. Malicka Salie (41)was informed of the contain-er burning by a neighbourwho came knocking at herwindow.
“I was in shock and Ididn’t know what to do.Someone who lives in thecourts phoned the fire bri-gade and the police,” saysSalie.
It has not been confirmedwho started the fire, but thecommunity suspect that thevagrants who usually comethrough the fence near thecontainer of started the fireto keep warm as they usual-ly do and it got out of con-trol.
John van Niekerk, whosecontainer is linked to Sa-lie’s, says: “There are a fewmen who come here oftenand make fires next to thecontainers.
“We’ve tried keeping
them out by closing upwhere they sneak in, but itdidn’t help because theythen just jumped over thefence.”
Salie says: “I am veryheart-sore because I workedso hard to get these thingsfor my family.
“I’m unemployed and Ijust do odd jobs from time totime. My husband died a fewyears ago. Now it’s just meand my daughters.”
Salie lives with herdaughters aged eight, 12 and19 as well as her sisters’daughter.
Fortunately the chil-dren’s school uniforms wer-en’t burnt, but most of theirother clothing items were.
Along with clothes the fami-ly also lost a lounge suite, cupboards, wardrobes, abed headboard, kitchenutensils and many otherhousehold items. Stationcommander of the OtteryFire Station, Cedric Dan-iels, confirmed the incident.“We arrived at the gate butit was closed. We had to waitfor someone to open thegate, then only could wefight the fire. We are not ex-actly sure what started thefire, but we did as much aswe could.”
Anyone who is able to as-sist the Salie family withany kind of donation orhelp, is asked to call Mal-icka on 084 288 5986.

Cape Town leadsby exampleHANRIE BOSCH
The City of Cape Town has been crownedrunner-up in the Department of Environ-mental Affairs’ Cleanest Metro Competi-tion for 2009/10.
This is the third year in a row that the Cityhas finished in the top three.
In 2006/07 Cape Town managed to win thetitle and in 2007/08 took third place. But allCapetonians can help to make a differenceand to bring the title back to Cape Town nextyear by making well-informed green choic-es. Jacques du Toit, of the City of CapeTown’s Strategy and Planning Department, says: “The competition is about more thanjust having a clean city, it is about workingsmartly with our limited resources. We ap-peal to residents to start living smartly.”
As the runner-up, the city has wonR750 000, but no cash changes hands, as theCity has to create specific projects in line
with the Department of Environmental Af-fairs’ Expanded Public Works Programmecriteria.
And the City has opted to “lead by exam-ple” by installing energy-efficient solar wa-ter heating and lighting devices in fire sta-tions, nature reserves and areas of its 44Wale Street building.
“The City cannot tell its residents to con-serve energy and resources if we are not do-ing it, so we have opted to install these ener-gy-efficient devices in public areas.”
According to Du Toit, nature reserves inthe area are extremely cash-strapped and itmakes economic sense to install energy-effi-cient fittings to help them conserve energyand save money.
“People will also be able to immediatelynotice the change, and this will reinforce theCity’s attempt to encourage energy-efficientliving. The more the public embraces theseinitiatives and go green, the better chancewe have of winning the title next year.”
Ray of hope for autistic childrenTERESA FISCHER
PATRICIA HENDRICKS (54) says she wasborn to work with problematic children.
For 16 years she has been working with au-tistic children and is currently employed asa teacher at one of the special schools in theWestern Cape.
But she says there are only two schools forchildren with autism, and that these cateronly for those with money.
“The saddest thing is there is no place forautistic children frompoorer families,” shesays.
And when they turn 18,the majority of these pu-pils are forced to returnhome, if they are not em-ployable.
But Hendricks, wholives in Strandfontein, has a vision of opening acentre where mentallydisabled learners, espe-cially those with autism, can practice their skillsin vocational and educa-tional activities aftertheir school years haveended.
She describes herself as“an ordinary teacherwith a helluva lot of experience”. She hasbeen teaching since 1977.
Regarding autism, she says there is “nomanual”, and that there are degrees of au-tism.But she explains that if you want to seeprogress, you must stick to a routine, as mostautistic children don’t understand time..
“Autistic children are unpredictable, anddevelop certain obsessions,” she says.
“For example if they are used to eatingbrown rice and one day you change to yellowrice, they will smash that plate.” Bridgingthese obsessions is part of behaviour thera-py.
She also says that autistic children makedifferent sounds for different feelings.
“Finally I can speak the language of the au-tistic child.”
An added difficulty when caring for autis-tic children is that they don’t understand
danger, she says, adding that her first en-counter with an autistic child “almost gaveher a heart attack”.
“The child ran out of the school bus andinto a brick wall, with such force ... but thenburst out laughing like it was the funniestthing,” says Hendricks.
She explains that these children must bekept busy, but that nine out of 10 end up backat home when they turn 18.
“Theyareveryupset by the change in theirroutine and feel they are being punished,”
says Hendricks, who adds thattheir caregivers often have nolife.
Hendricks says she has thesupport of the Department ofSocial Development for herproposal, which she has beenworking on for over four years.
She also has obtained thebacking of overseas and localsponsors. But she says it is notabout the money and that sheis even prepared to put in herpension.
Hendricks adds: “Every dayI see the sadness in parents’faces; I know I can make a dif-ference.”
The idea is that the facilitywould especially be for thoseparents who are experiencing
financial difficulties. The only costs wouldbe for transport to the school, which is pro-posed for one of the buildings at Valken-berg.Hendricks says she needs an idea ofhow many parents would be interested in thefacility, in order for her to take the next step.
Megan Gobey’s son Gregory (15) has beencared for by Hendricks for six months, andshe says in that space of time the change inher son has been “phenomenal”.
Gobey says his speech has improved, he isa lot more self-sufficient, confident in him-self and also happy.
“Patricia has an absolute gift,” saysGobey, adding that no-one else thought thisprogress would be possible.

Isaacs started fasting“on and off” last year, sharing the days be-tween whole day andhalf day.
She attends Pine-lands Primary – “theblue school” – and“loves eating” and hav-ing conversations.
This year would beher first time fastingevery day for the wholeday, and she says: “I amlooking forward to it.”
During the fast,Isaacs explains, her fa-vourite meal is chickenand potatoes, but shewill be looking to “keepfit”. She loves taking cake to her neigh-bours, and enjoys the minutes just beforethe fast is broken, watching people stare at
the different foods and cakes on display.“I really just want to look more thin after
the fast, so that is maybe why I am so excit-ed as well,” says Isaacs.
She says last year she found certain daysto be “very difficultbut challenging”, andis looking forward togetting her perma-nent fasting days offto a good start.
According toIsaacs, she sees thefast as being the idealopportunity to main-tain “your body andforget about eating”.
“I’m looking for-ward to the fast thisyear because I thinkI’m going to loseweight,” Isaacslaughs.

In keeping with the worldwide geesof making the world a better place by volun-teering just 67 minutes of your time, People’sPost partnered with Proudly South Africa(PSA) in a campaign to create 93 000 jobs with-in a year.
The 93 000 Jobs for Mandela Day campaignwas launched on Saturday 16 July, a partner-ship between selected Media 24 titles such asPeople’s Post, Tygerburger, City Vision andDie Burger.

South Africans have shown that they havethe power to unite as one in their indefatiga-ble quest for democracy and, with equal gus-to, in achieving world glory through success-fully hosting the World Cup.
Here is our chance to take centre stageagain in shaping our economic destiny; ourchance to soar above unemployment, povertyand despair.
The statistics speak for themselves; withabout a quarter of our population jobless, ourunemployment rate ranks as among the high-est in the world. We have the power to turnthat statistic aroundandmakeMadibaproud. For 67 years, he fought oppression.
Oppression has many guises and beingpoor subjects one to the most damaging, hu-miliating, soul-destroying oppression.
The responsibility for job creation restswith government, industry and each individ-ual. We are playing our part by creating aplatform for business and the unemployed toconnect. Regardless of how small the job isthat is created, each job is a giant step towardsempowering an individual, a family, a com-munity, a nation.
The platform is here. All you have to do isstep up!

Where is the good service?I HAD a look at the story about the HanoverPark hospital in last week’s People’s Post(“She was a real fighter”, 12 July).
I would like to send my condolences toKaashiefa Ismail and her family, and wouldlike to say that my wife and I went throughthe same thing with the same hospital.

I agree she should take action against thedoctors and nurses at Hanover Park day hos-pital because they get paid to assist us, butinstead we get messed around. I will nevergo to that hospital again.
There are uneducated people workingthere, and it’s frustrating when you have to
beg for help. What must we do to get betterservice? I foughtwithHomeAffairs lastweekand told one of the big bosses that there areincompetent and uneducated people work-ing for them.
Don’t know how they got the job, but thosejobs should be given to people who reallywant to be there and actually care.
Action should be taken against the wholegovernment, because they are all a bunch ofcrooks stealing the people’s money.
I got to say that Groote Schuur Hospitaldoes a good job, and yes you do wait long forsomeone to assist you, but we’re happy.HILTON RUSTINHanover Park
Pit bull statistics are skewedTHE pit bull, or American pit bull terrier touse its full name, is indeed a specific breedand definitely not a type representing otherbreeds and cross breeds.
The United Kennel Club (UKC) in the USAwas the first registry to recognise the pit bullas a breed in 1898 already. Pit bulls are alsoregistered with the American Kennel Club,as well as the American Dog Breeders Asso-ciation in the USA.
In South Africa, pit bulls are recognisedand registered by several bodies, includingthe National Dog Breeders Council (NDBC),Canine Breeders Association, (CBA) and theUnited SA Pit Bull Registry (USAPR), toname but a few.
To include other breeds as well as crossbreeds in the same group as pit bulls whencomparing statistics will be a huge mistake,
as well as very unfair towards this greatbreed.MARNUS PRETORIUS, CHAIRPER-SON OF THE PITBULL UNION OFSOUTH AFRICA
Pretorius provided the above informa-tion in response to a request for commenton the statement that statistics that claim“pit bulls” are responsible for some per-centage of attacks are lumping manybreeds together, then comparing that toother dogs that are counted as individualbreeds; as well as the statement thatbreed identification is left up to victimand witness testimony, and is oftenwrong. Due to negative press, biting dogsof almost any breed have been called “pitbulls” – Ed.

Positives from pulsating clashPositives from pulsating clashTASMIN CUPIDO
DESPITE opening their Absa Currie Cup campaignwith a draw to GWK Griquas, Allister Coetzee andDHL Western Province will be positive that theyoung, inexperienced side was able to put up afight.
The 26-26 scoreline at DHL Newlands on Saturday af-ternoon proves that the youngsters in royal-blue-and-white will put up a challenge in the annual competition, despite the Cape side being plagued by injury and anumber of players performing international duties.
Due to the DHL Stormers’ participation up until thesemi-finals of the Super Rugby competition, the Prov-ince squad only had eight days to prepare for the kick-off of the Currie Cup – the Griquas had already beentraining together for three weeks.
Coetzee says they are positive after the performance.“Of cause we are disappointed about not being able towin, but it certainly is not all negative,” he said afterthe match.
“We had eight players making their Currie Cup de-buts today, and the youngsters showed that this teamhas tons of potential.”
He also admitted that they had missed importantpoint-scoring opportunities during the match. “Webutchered a few chances and some of the new combina-tions need to settle and be refined,” Coetzee said.
“But I amconfident thatwecan takeanumberof posi-tives from this match – the youngsters stood up to thechallenge and impressed.”
Coetzee also defended a decision to not take a shotat goal after receiving a penalty late in the match, say-ing that the captain had consulted replacement flyhalf,Demetri Caterikillis, about whether the shot was with-in his range. The kick, which could possibly have putProvince in the lead, was not taken.
Two young players who impressed on the field wereflanker, Siya Kolisi, and flyhalf, Gary van Aswegen.
Kolisi, who scored one of WP’s two tries, was impres-sive on attack and defence, while also showing steel atbreakdown points. His ability to gain valuable metreswith ball in hand was also notable.
Van Aswegen, who scored 16 of his side’s points fromhis boot, was a real general in theback line, often takingthe lead in making sure the troops were organised. Histactical kicking was impressive, while his defence has
improved noticeably.. This Friday Province look to win their first match
when they travel to Potchefstroom to take on the Leop-ards at Profert Olen Park.
TO THE TRYLINE: DHL Western Province flanker, Siya Kolisi, manages to slip through the tackle of Frikkie Spies of GWK Griquasduring the 2626 draw between the two sides in the opening match of the Absa Currie Cup at DHL Newlands on Saturday.
