4-H Fast Finder for the Month: Tracy Moline

Congratulations for being our 4-H Fast Finder this month!

We hope you enjoy the Pepin Pacer !

ATTENTION Marie Ritscher’s daughter, Ali, works at

Froedert/Medical Colleges of Wisconsin. They are in need and are

accepting home sewn face masks. Marie is inviting Pepin County 4-H families to

help her out!

We have the recommended pattern for you to follow. If you need fabric and thread let

Marie know. She has “stock” at her house. Please call ahead to make

arrangements for pick up at her house in Nelson at 715-495-1658 or Gwen, at the

Extension Office in Durand, at 715-672-5214. Be sure to call ahead as the County Government Building has limited public access and the doors are locked.

Marie hopes to send a shipment out next week Wednesday and if needed in the

weeks to follow.

Managing Your Personal Financial in Tough Times The coronavirus, also known as COVID-19, is impacting households, communities and businesses. Here are some common financial challenges as a result of COVID-19 pandemic with the links to government websites and they types of assistance that might be available. https://fyi.extension.wisc.edu/toughtimes/covid-19-financial-resources/

Home Alone - Preparing Children for Self-Care This self-study for parents and children help prepare for safely staying home and making a family plan. https://fyi.extension.wisc.edu/homealone/

In response to the unprecedented effects of the COVID-19 virus outbreak, UW-Madison

Division of Extension Buffalo and Pepin Counties have temporarily overhauled their service

delivery model. By moving youth development trainings to an online format and preparing

easy-to-use roadmaps for financial assistance, Extension researchers and educators provide

valuable resources at a confusing and concerning time.

Examples of these innovative delivery methods from across the state are being captured on

an online Extension resource (https://fyi.extension.wisc.edu/covid19) dedicated to COVID-19

response and include:

• Navigating COVID-19 for small businesses and non-profit organizations

• Helping children feel safe and talking about emotions during scary events

• Virtual meetings and trainings for 4-H youth and clubs

• Food safety and the implications of COVID-19 on grocery stores and takeout

Here are some direct link examples:

Preparing for Coronavirus on Farms The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has brought the need for business continuity planning to the forefront. China’s influence in agriculture is wide-ranging. In the case of the COVID-19 public health situation, there will almost inevitably be some unexpected consequences as supplies become limited or unavailable. https://farms.extension.wisc.edu/coronavirus/

All animal exhibitors, with the exception of Cats & Dogs, must complete the Youth for the Quality Care of Animals (YQCA) each year. Exhibitors have the option to complete the training online.

https://yqca.learngrow.io/Account/Login

Wisconsin State Fair and other national exhibitions will require certification in YQCA for participation in events. The training must be completed by July 1.

Pen of 3 Competition September 13, 2020

Jefferson Co. Fairgrounds

The Pen of 3 would like to invite Wisconsin 4-H Clubs and Sheep Production leaders to participate in this unique educational experience held during the Wisconsin Sheep & Wool Festival. 4-H youth and volunteers can learn how Sheep Producers have a Pen of 3 lambs judged both live and indexing measurements taken after har-vest to determine loin eye, back fat, and leg score to assist producers with Genetic, Breeding and Feeding deci-sions for their respective flocks. During the live Judging, an actual lamb buyer will be available to answer ques-tions regarding factors important for placing, purchasing, and transport of lambs. Sheep Producers partici-pating in the event will be on hand to discuss their sheep, the breed, feeding, care, and their views regarding this reality-based competition.

Participation by the public is encouraged for this Event. Interested Festival goers can place pens according to their preference and also try to guess the loin eye size of a lamb of their choice. Results of this portion of the Event will be posted in the online version of the Wisconsin shepherd and on the Wisconsin Sheep & Wool website.

Meat Animal Additional Educational Experience due July 24th. Online opportunities for completing the Additional Educational Experience are available

at https://buffalo.extension.wisc.edu/4hyd/4h/member/meatanimal/

After completing the Meat Animal Additional Educational experience, click on the following link to access the Google Form to complete your additional educational requirement form: https://goo.gl/forms/HwJDXZNBd4BesxjB2

During the month of April YQCA will be offering web-based trainings for $9, instead of $12.

Those wishing to take part in the flash sale will need to purchase $9 web-based training coupons from YQCA. Coupon order form link is attached. There is a memo that explains the details step by step. Once the order form and proof of payment is received, coupons will be issued and returned to the purchaser within 3-5 business days. This flash sale will be offered in April only. If states/instructors would prefer to see if travel and gathering bans are lifted and instructor-led trainings are able to take place, that is their choice. However, if bans are not lifted and instructor-led trainings can’t be held, full-priced, web-based trainings will be the only option.

SHOW ANIMAL SALES FOLLOW THE “SAFER AT HOME ORDER”

At the direction of Gov. Tony Evers, the Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS) on

March 24 issued an emergency order closing all nonessential businesses and operations. The Safer

at Home order has prompted some questions about what types of businesses are considered

“essential.” Among the questions: Are show pig sales, or other sales of animals intended for show,

considered “essential” under the Safer at Home order?

No. While the emergency order did not list show animal sales, the Wisconsin Economic Development

Corporation (WEDC) has indicated that they are considered nonessential services. For more

information, please visit the WEDC website at https://wedc.org/essentialbusiness/. The site includes

a form for anyone who has additional questions about their business’ designation. This will not alter

the Division of Animal Health’s activities regarding importation of animals, or the requirements

outlined in ATCP 10.

The Safer at Home order is in effect until 8 a.m. on Friday, April 24 or until a superseding order is

issued.
