In June this year Queen Elizabeth II becomes

only the second monarch in our countrys

history, after Queen Victoria in 1897, to

celebrate 60 years on the throne. And with

the nation caught up in the Jubilee, sports

fans can also look forward the 2012 Olympic

Games and the annual return of the

Wimbledon Grand Slam. Throw in all the

usual fun of the British sun, such as garden

parties, trips to the beach and walks in our

wonderful countryside, and it all adds up toan extraordinary summer of national pride.

The Jubilee celebrations may only be lasting

for a short time, but you can still get timeless

and stylish items for your home that will look

great for years to come. While the Union

    Jack features prominently on many

interesting pieces, this doesnt have to

dominate your dcor. Simply look for

    furniture and accessories that showcase

traditional British design, go for a neutralscheme that is punctuated by reds and blues

Belling has been at the heartof cooking for 100 years

    F

ounded in 1912 by Charles Belling with just

150, a shed in Enfield and a young assistant, kitchen appliance brand Belling has been at

the heart of British cooking for 100 years.

At the forefront of kitchen innovation for a

century, Belling has been responsible for a number

of industry firsts including the first enamel cooker

(launched in 1931), the first cooker with glass doors

(1935), the UKs first domestic fan oven (1971), the

first black ceramic hob (1977) and the UKs first

    slot-in oven (1982).

Richard Belling, a young cousin of Belling

founder Charles and Chairman and MD of Belling

between 1965 and 1992, says: Bel ling appliances

have been used in British homes for a century. Your

mother or grandmother probably used one and you

most likely learnt to cook on one. Indeed, Her

Majesty the Queen and Princess Margaret both

learned to cook on a Belling.

Today the brand continues to innovate. In 2010 it

was the first company to be approved and

recommended by the Energy Saving Trust across

freestanding, built-in and range cooking, whilst its campaign to

bring induction cooking to a wider market has seen the

technology become accessible and affordable for all. The past

five years have also seen Belling bring the majority of

    manufacture back to the UK.

Denver Hewlett, Chief Executive of Bel ling, says: As

the current custodian of the Belling brand it makes meimmensely proud to see this famous and much loved

company celebrate 100 years in business. The key to

Bellings success has always been innovation, responding

creatively to the needs of families and Brit ish cooks, and

this has continued apace in the 20 years since Glen

Dimplex bought the business. We have had many

challenges along the way, one of which has been bringing the

majority of our product manufacturing back to the UK. Today

90% of our products are made in our UK factory.

This year Belling has unveiled the 100 Collection, a suite of

appliances designed with a futuristic white glass and chrome

aesthetic launched to celebrate its 100th anniversary. The

brands legendary Baby Belling table top cooker, first launched

in 1929, has also been given a makeover for the occasion.Denver adds, It is an exciting year for Belling, not only are

we celebrating our past, we are looking to the future with a

    Style TipThe secret of French

country style is the blend ofornate details with a downto earth practicality. Realbeauty always come from

    appreciating nature

    SUSAN DICKERSON

    Deputy Editor

After the magical experience of l iving in

Provence, Karen Price wanted to recreate

some of its splendour in the West Country

when she returned to England. She moved to

Chewton Mendip, 16 miles from Bristol, with her

partner John and was charmed by the former

village post office and adjoining bakery.

The post office was a 17th century Grade II

listed building and the display boards and counters

were still being used when I first saw the property,

says Karen. In fact most of the fixtures hadnt been

changed for over 80 years. The bakery had supplied

the village with bread for generations and I loved

knowing that these two buildings had so much

history. I felt sure I could continue welcoming

people into the village by converting the buildings

    into a bed and breakfast.

Karen had her guests comfort at the forefrontof her mind as she began restoring the buildings in

their original style. I wanted to create a home

away from home and also provide a place to

display my treasured collection of Gilles Sacksick

artwork, she says. I decided that a simple, relaxed

style would be best rather than trying to cram too

    many things in.

Simple startAs Karen dislikes clutter and overfull rooms, she

took stock of her existing furniture and sold some

of the heavier pieces. To this day her dcor

continues to evolve, as she combines her love of

sumptuous, comfortable living with her passion for

light and soft tones. She began restoring the house very carefully

I loved knowing that these two village buildings had so much historyKAREN PRICE, OWNER

furnishings. Karen sourced original furniture from

the south west of France as well as exploring the

local reclamation yards and antiques shops. I

wanted to get the business up and running as soon

as possible but I knew I had to take my time to get

the look and the feel just right, says Karen.

Mix & matchIt was a delicate balance and she wanted to

consider every last detail thoroughly which took a

lot of time. She decided to retain the original

flagstone flooring wherever possible and used it as a

basis for the whole scheme. The stones lend colour

and depth as well as a feeling of warmth. They

catch the eye as soon as people come into the

house and Im so pleased we lavished so much

    attention on them, says Karen.

In the living room, pride of place goes to a

beautiful French-style fireplace bought from a local

reclamation yard. It is dressed with a bespoke

mirror made by a local designer after Karen realised

the chances of finding anything which was theperfect match were slim.

I had a picture in my mind of what I wanted

but I just couldnt find it on my travels. In the end

John suggested that we should bite the bullet and

commission something. Im so pleased we did as

the mirror makes me smile every time I see it. He

    was absolutely right, she admits.

Karens Top Tips Make sure your home reflects the seasons. Move

furniture around, add fresh flowers and keep

thinking about how you can display items to make

the best use of the changing light.

Avoid clutter. If you have spent a lot of money or

time sourcing furniture you love then overdressing

a room can really distract from it. Keep surfaces

clear so you enjoy the beauty of the materials and

the workmanship that has gone into it.

Choose patterns with care and avoid anything too

bright as it will jar your senses. Stripes and checks

are classics and will appeal to all age groups.

Work with what youve got and respect the

integrity of your building. If you fall in love with a

particular style think about how you can borrow

certain elements rather than trying to replicatesomeone elses look. You need to make it yours.

    Best of both

Throughout the project Karen was keen to integrate

the best of modern technology with period features.

I choose some freestanding antique units in the

Old Bakery kitchen and combined them with some

sleek appliances, says Karen. I wanted to make

the accommodation as versatile as possible so I

decided to make the Old Bakery a self-contained

annexe where guests could cook for themselves.

It was quite a challenge to make a home away

from home but she has done a brilliant job. French

oak floors and travertine tiles have been installed

throughout for a clean and stylish finish. The living

and dining area has a lovely high ceiling rising to the

eaves with its thick old beams. It is painted in

Farrow & Balls soothing Old White, which gives it

    plenty of character.

The stone fireplace is a wonderful feature and

there is room for at least six people to dine at thelarge refectory table. Once guests step through the

French doors, they can enjoy their own private

    Mediterranean-style courtyard and even

sunbathe on a day bed. The walls are lime

washed in Farrow & Balls Yellow Ground for an

    extra splash of sunshine.

Upstairs the pretty bedroom which was once

used to store the bakers flour and yeast hasmullioned windows. The bed is dressed with

crisp and fresh white linen which contrasts with

the pale, golden wooden headboard and the rest

    of the furniture.

The rest of the Post House exudes a French

country ambience from the moment visitors

cross the threshold as the hallway is home to a

pretty armoire from Burgundy. I really enjoyed

using lime wash throughout the house when I

was decorating. I couldnt get enough of it, says

Karen. I love how it gives a pleasing and subtle

effect that gently fades with time.

The two guest rooms in the Post House have

very different personalities. The Blue Room is

painted in Farrow & Ball Skylight Blue and

headboard made from a tongue and groove panel

and guests are charmed by the freestanding tub

and decorative washstand in the bathroom.

I was so thrilled once Id finished this room,

she said. We even put in a fridge so people could

enjoy a nightcap and have a place to store snacks

after a days sightseeing in Bath or Bristol. Were

also convenient for Glastonbury and Wells sothere are plenty of places to explore.

Karen really thinks of everything and even

bakes her own recipe biscuits for her guests to

make them feel even more at home. I feel that

sharing our home with our guests is a real

privilege and I want to make everyone feel that

    I

have always loved vintage, the posh word we all now use for second-

hand things which arent quite antique and are also rather fab. My love

affair started when I was 14 years old. I spent some of my precious

pocket money on a Singer sewing machine and some 1930s glass vasesfrom a jumble sale run by the Scouts in the local village hall.

My passion continued through college days, though scrap yards were

more my modus operandi. In my early twenties I explored the thrift stores

and swap meets of Southern California. Today my appreciation has

resolved into a passionate advocacy for the cost-ef fective quality and

character that vintage can offer, not to mention the ecologically sustainable

aspect of this kind of resourcefulness.

Watch out though! You dont want to end up like the naive yummy

mummy customers in the infamous Harry Enfield sketch set in a shop

tellingly called I Saw You Coming, and paying wildly over the odds for stuff

Enfields character has just heaved out of a skip. However I must confess

that skips are good places to look. I have found some extraordinary things

from a WWI wheelchair to an original Paco Rabanne dress.

Wise buysThe good news is that there is absolutely no need to fall into this

particular trap thanks to the breadth of the items available. As with most

things, research is key, and the blessing of the internet means we can do

this quite extensively from the comfort of home, ensuring the best price

    for the best quality.

When it comes to furniture, a makers mark is a fairly obvious indication

of good or bad quality, though in absentia scrutinise the joints. You are

looking for firmness and also for signs of woodworm. Take your time and

trust your instincts. If youre not sure but cant put your finger on why, it is

better to walk away rather than take a chance.

Dont be shy in auction houses or showrooms, and have a really good

ferret around a piece, looking inside and underneath. Take the drawersout too and inspect them

    properly. Just remember to put

    them back!

    In my experience, people

    who trade through sites like

eBay tend to be honest about

    imperfections as they know

    their customers cant inspect an

    item thoroughly before they

    buy. The traders business relies

on their integrity, as the site is

    designed so that customers can

    rate the sellers.

New dimensionsI believe the key to success with things vintage is two-fold. First you need to

have to hand plenty of the resources to renovate or even upcycle and

secondly you need to know how to work your vintage pieces into yourexisting home dcor.

Having worked with numerous upholsterers I now refuse to go anywhere

else but to Belinda Dillon (belinda-upholstery.co.uk). She recently gave a

master-class on my most recent design course and revealed the mysteries, as

well as infinite benefits, of really good upholstery. I have also worked with a

French polisher in my own home this month and I cannot recommend the

practice highly enough. I feel it is magical and affordable, a rare combination.

Upcycling adds another dimension to the joys of vintage, where those

unloved, less precious pieces are given a new lease of life by being

transformed into something rather different to what their original

    creator intended.

You can be inspired by pieces made by Committee, a great London

design studio whose floor lamps, consisting of totem poles of vintage

crockery, sit proudly in museum collections no less (gallop.co.uk). Squint

(squintunlimited.com) is another company which has demonstrated the

integrity and value in upcycling, by artfully pasting fabric to otherwise rather

inconspicuous pieces of lighting and furniture for a dramatic effect.

The nationally acclaimed designer Lucy Turners charming upcycled

midcentury furniture (lucyturner.co) can be bought in Peter Jones while

Retrouvius and Baileys offer an ever-changing and inventive parade of

upcycled objects (retrouvius.com and baileyshomeandgarden.com). Im

particularly fond of each companys light fittings, made respectively from glass

    funnels and wine bottles.

I always follow one simple rule to successfully decorate with all things

vintage, especially when combining old with new. The trick is to ensure that at

least one element in each piece is echoed at least once in another

component, so you do need to be very discerning when you are shopping foryour scheme. I like to take pictures of

the items I already own and use them

as an aide-memoire. Pay attention to

colour and texture, shape and scale

and youll be well on your way to

    vintage decorating victory!

Shaun and Kim Clarke always dreamt of

starting a new life somewhere in continental

Europe. But living in a small one-bedroom

flat in Harrow, they never imagined that they

would one day be the proud owners of a four-

storey, 17th-century townhouse in the beautiful and

historic Belgian city of Bruges. Wed always

fantasised about a new beginning somewhere

overseas, explains Kim, who is a speech therapist.

Eventually the daily grind of working and living in

London really began to fuel those ideas. So in the

end we decided to stop wishing and start looking.

Country lifeI suppose because we were living in the city, our

initial idea was to find some charmingly

dilapidated farmhouse to rescue, surrounded byfields and vineyards somewhere in the sunny

regions of rural France, the typical vision really,

says Shaun. So we went on a lot of trips to the

Loire valley and the Dordogne during our first 18

    months of searching, but we

    never saw anything that was

    completely perfect, or which

    truly inspired us. We often

made a detour on the way

back, and after one of our

    journeys we ended up in

Bruges. Id been there a lot

    when I was younger and

    remembered it fondly, and

the first time I took Kim she

loved it straight away. So one

    day we stopped there again

    on our return from another

    round of tiring, fruitless

    searches. We strolled by the

    canal to unwind until the

    penny finally dropped this

was where we wanted to live.

A mere hours drive across the border from

Calais, Bruges is widely regarded as one of the

most perfectly preserved medieval towns inEurope. Its central market square is overlooked by

the towering 13th-century belfry, and the streets

    are lined with tightly packed

    buildings, with faades

    ranging in style from Gothic

    to Renaissance. Looking

    around felt like a pleasure

    rather than a chore for

    almost the first time since

    we started, says Kim.

    When we first visited the

    area I was concerned that

the house was right in the

    heart of town which attracts

quite a lot of tourists. But

    once we turned down our

    little side street I couldnt

    believe how peaceful it

    suddenly became. Best of

    all the house itself looked

lovely from the outside, despite being in need of

    a new coat of paint.

Bleak houseWe both felt really encouraged, but steppinginside was something else, says Shaun. The

building was a complete mess, and everything was in

a very poor state. Various pieces had been piled up

over the years, almost to the ceiling in places. There

were boxes and barrels everywhere, and we even

found ancient salamis hanging in the cellar. It looked

like the perfect film set for the production of aDickens novel.

We knew it would be a tall order, but we could

still see great potential in the neoclassical detail and

the size and proportion of the rooms, says Kim. I

remember going upstairs, crouching in the low attic,

and through a gap where a tile was missing we

peeked out at a tantalising glimpse over the rooftops

of Bruges. At this point we knew we had to have it.

The price is rightThe Clarkes made their offer, and while the deed of

sale was being drawn up they began clearing out

each room. The housing market is very different

here in Belgium. Once both parties have signed a

sale agreement its 100 percent legally binding,

which means that everybody is seriously committed

and theres no reneging by anyone at the last

minute, explains Kim. I think its a good system,

and it allowed us to get on with removing all the

mess, while a young local architect drew up plans for

what we wanted, ready to submit them for

permission. We could do all this before the place

    was officially ours.

The pair soldiered on, clearing out the property

before embarking on stripping off layers of old

wallpaper in each room in order to remove the

crumbling plaster below. It was tough, especially inthe beginning, recalls Shaun. At that point we were

doing it all at weekends, coming over from London

where we were still working. I look back now and

wonder how we managed. The only major setback

occurred when they arrived one day to find that the

original half-tonne marble fireplaces in the living

room and dining room had been stolen. We had to

source reclaimed replacements and theyre not quite

the same, which was all a bit of a blow, says Kim.

But we had a fantastic team of local builders and

craftsmen helping us who regarded the property as

part of their citys heritage, and took pride and care

in their work. And we could go back to England in

confidence knowing that they could get on with

    things during the week.

Major work continued on the property at a good

pace, including restoration of all the beautiful

neoclassical coving and ceiling mouldings. A full six

tonnes of fresh plaster was applied to the walls, and

the house was rewired and re-plumbed throughout, anew kitchen fitted, en-suite bathrooms added to

each of the three bedrooms and the attic converted.

It was an enormous amount of work, Shaun

recalls. But it was worth it to make the place finally

feel a bit more like a home.

    Paint the town

Once the structural work was complete it was time

to get to the fun part Id been looking forward to

from the start, says Kim. I couldnt wait to chooseall the right period wall colours and the furnishings

for each room. We removed the salon doors that

originally divided the living and dining rooms on the

ground floor to create a large main reception room,

which is now home to the reclaimed black marble

fireplaces. The high ceilings and coving have

been kept a bright matte white to create a smart

contrast, and a pair of Lavenham five-light cream

chandeliers from Laura Ashley hang from the

ornate rosette mouldings. Meanwhile the walls

have been painted in subtle but warm brown grey

called Fin de grisfrom the Flamant paint range, and are enhanced with a pair of blue and cream

Persian rugs. For the kitchen, the couple chose

units from their local Ikea branch outside Brussels,

while the wall tiles used are Moon Shadow from

    REAL HOMES Belgian Townhouse

Fired Earths New England range, and the paint is

    Flamants Cappuccino.

Upstairs the oval bedroom, so called because of

the striking ceiling moulding, has been painted in Flos

de Bleu, also from Flamant, which they then used on

the Victorian roll-top bath in the en-suite bathroom.

This master bedroom is sparely but elegantly

furnished with a large double bed and wall-mountedreading lights above and a pair of Gustavian-style

bedside tables, while the quilt and cushions were

sourced from French company Madura. We bought

a pair of Lloyd Loom chairs for the second bedroom,

to create a cosy seating area by the window, says

Kim. And at the other end of the room we used a

    slender, turn-of-the-century mahogany writing desk

and chair as a feature. We also really enjoyed

converting the attic into a third bedroom by raising

the roof line and lowering the floor to provide

additional guest space. We painted the walls in

Farrow & Balls String and Biscuit, and it is this area

that has the spectacular cityscape views.

    Over the finish line

When the work was completed the Clarkes were

able to look around their beautiful new home from

top to bottom, and see their long-held dream had

come true. I think its better than we ever dared to

hope, says Shaun. The whole project was

something of a gamble from the start. We bought

the house for 190,000 and spent a further 250,000

on the restoration and refurbishment. Recently, a

local agent came round and put an instant value of

800,000 on the building. It was never about the

money, but I have to say it did feel like the final

affirmation of our hard work, and it was good toknow that taking such a big risk and putting in so

    much effort had paid off.

    The house I grew

up in was a mill cottage in a

    cobbled street in Bury,

    Lancashire. Ill always remember

the back door which my father

made using a beautiful old stained

glass window, I was mesmerised by

it! It was a colourful picture of a

hillside with a winding path leading to a

lovely cottage. There were clouds and bluebirds in

the sky and the sun rose up from behind the hill withits rays splayed out.

When I'm planning a room I always think about

the light first of all. Then I consider what the room will

be used for and which colours will work best there.

The best advice I ever had was from my old

college tutor Jo Tyrer, who also taught Ossie Clark.

She told me to always buy the best quality that I could

    possibly afford.

My motto is one I learned from my grandmother. It

is If it suits the wearer, ignore the stirrer! I love this

saying because Im very individual, both in my clothes

    and my furnishings.

I wish more people wouldbe brave and use more

colour. I must confess I find the fashion for bland and

    stark rooms just so boring!

I think the next trend in interiors will be colour

    and maximalism!

My favourite room is my studio where I can go to be alone

and work deep into the night. I get completely absorbed and

sometimes it is hard to drag myself away. There are designs,

fabrics, embroideries and pictures I love everywhere. It feels

like a real haven for me.

The thing I like best about my house is that it is

comfortable. I love the way it makes me feel so welcome when

    I return from my travels.

My favourite place in Britain is Bath. I love its beautiful

architecture and its history. I feel it is such an elegant city and

    its setting is simply divine.

My top tip when decorating is to make a mood board

and start with an image of something you really love that

inspires you. It might be a particular colour, a picture, a flower

or a fabric. Then keep adding more images and colours until

you have a look or a plan that youre happy with. You never

know where your inspiration will take you!

The property had many charms, but it was the factthat it came with planning permission to extend

which clinched the deal for usSARAH SCHOFIELD, OWNER

This beautiful 18th-century converted barn inSomerset had already been transformed into

a three-bedroom house when Sarah and

Jason Schofield bought it. Needless to say the

property had many charms, but it was the fact that it

came with planning permission to extend which

    clinched the deal.

Our family was growing and we needed more

space, explains Sarah. We love the area and we

have lots of friends here, so we didn't want to move,

especially as the children were so settled. With this

in mind, the opportunity to extend was the ideal

solution. It meant that the Schofields could add a

dining room, a utility room, a fourth bedroom and

an en-suite to the master bedroom.

    REAL HOMES Barn Extension

Best laid plansSarah and Jason worked with a local planning

consultant, Simon Corbett, who secured permission

for their design. We got it approved first time

around, remembers Sarah. I think it was because

we spent six months going into every last detail to

make sure the process would be as painless as

possible. The only dif ficulties they encountered at

this stage related to the engineering. Clearing metresof space in the garden wasn't easy! she laughs.

However the build itself got off to a bit of a

shaky start, as Sarah recalls. It had been my 40th

birthday party the night before and my son Henry

had fallen out of a tree and broken his arm, so we

had spent hours in casualty! she says. Thankfully

things took a turn for the better and the project went

    on to run smoothly.

Living in all the dust wasn't ideal though, she

adds. There was so much of it that we took the

children to stay with their grandparents who live

nearby. We had to put up a dust screen for the

kitchen, which left us with only a tiny space to cook

in and Tiggy the dog wasn't very happy about havinghis bed moved either.

But Sarah and Jason kept their goal in mind.

Whilst consultant Simon took care of the

technicalities, Sarah looked after the financial side of

things. We managed to stay on budget, she reports.

Again, I think that all the planning we did helped us

there, plus Jason and I have experience in property

so we were able to use our contacts.

Interior flairJust as the couple spent a lot of time planning the

new structures design, so Sarah put a lot of thought

into the interior decoration. I collected colour

swatches and clippings from magazines and Iwatched property programmes on television, she

remembers. What we really wanted was a light

social space for the whole family.

One of the ways in which Sarah created a sense

of continuity between the old and new parts of the

home was by using the same neutral colour scheme

throughout. The paint on the walls is Farrow & Ball's

New White and the doors are finished in a soft grey

green shade. Another feature which adds to the

feeling of flow is the creamy tiled limestone flooring

which has been laid over underfloor heating.

Lighting also plays an important role in these

two spaces. The spotlights in the ceilings have ten

different settings, so you have complete controlover the ambience. It's been used to great effect

during dinner parties, reports Sarah. On top of

that, one of my favourite things in the house is the

illuminating store cupboard in the kitchen. I'd

    always wanted one.

    Style TipLike Sarah, create a

feeling of flow between oldand new spaces by laying

    the same flooringthroughout or painting

    your walls incomplementary shades

Also in the kitchen is an original AGA dating

from 1945 which Sarah and Jason had re-enamelled.

It helps retain the period heart of the barn amongst

the contemporary renovations, she says. The kitchen

units were in place before the Schofields started on

the new extension, but they have managed to

incorporate some brilliant new features into them.

Jason now has his wine cooler built into one of

the corners and I have a nifty pop-out food processor.

There are also plugs which pop up from the work

surface and all the wires are hidden away, giving the

space a very clean look. I fell in love with the Vanessa

Arbuthnott fabric I used for the blinds after seeing it

    on a property programme.

Room to growIn the garden room extension, the beautiful long Oak

table and chairs are from Challicoms of Clevedon, a

department store near Bristol. I re-covered the seats

myself using fabric from Romo, the same company I

got the wallpaper above the fire from, remembers

Sarah. The settee at the back of the extension is

from John Lewis. It's great to sit there and enjoy the

light flooding in through the windows and roof

lantern. The smaller touches like the lamps and thecandle sticks were from a local florist and finish the

    room off perfectly.

    REAL HOMES Barn Extension

Now that the extension is complete, Sarah and

Jason are thrilled with the new space it provides.

It's essentially meant that our family can stay in

this house, says Sarah. We spend most of our

time in there. The children do their homework, we

eat and it's a great environment for entertaining,

which we love to do. It's a wonderful space andwith all that natural light it is invigorating and

    relaxing at the same time.

The process of house hunting can have its

ups and downs, and chance often plays a

hand in the proceedings. This was

certainly the case for Ali and Nick Guttridge when

they were inadvertently sent the wrong particulars

for a property which turned out to be their ideal

home. It hadnt been put on the open market

yet, says Ali. But as soon as we saw it we knew

immediately that it was for us. The couple had

been sorely let down on the purchase of a

number of other houses and had become

disillusioned with the house-hunting scenario until

they saw this property. It ticked all the boxes in

terms of scale, location and the level of work

required to transform it into a family home that

suited our needs, says Ali. We had to have it.

Having fully renovated and refurbished their

    previous 17th-century Somerset farmhouse, they

were in no hurry to take on another huge project,

so fortunately for them the property was in great

shape. The previous renovation took over our

lives and left no time or money for anything else,

recalls Ali. We werent looking for something

major, and luckily this house was carefullymaintained by the previous owners and only

    needed a cosmetic make-over.

Centre stageSet in five acres of land in a designated conservation

area, this Grade II-listed property adjoins a 14th-

century church and small pub at the heart of the

village, with views across the sweeping Chew Valley

and Somerset countryside. Originally a farmhouse, its

Georgian additions create a contrast of styles, with

    formal, grandly-proportioned areas working alongside

more cosy low-ceilinged rooms. With it being a listed

property it meant that there were restrictions that

    REAL HOMES Georgian Manor House

During this process the bathrooms were re-

sited, a new staircase was incorporated and the

basement was converted to provide games room

facilities for their two teenage children, Tilly and

Harry. Thankfully, with my experience in design, I

was able to coordinate all the specialists and

craftsmen needed to renovate the property into its

present state, says Ali. The house enjoys a

generous amount of natural light, so we decided to

accentuate this by using a neutral palette

throughout, with splashes of colour and texture

added to spice it up a little.

New lease of lifeThe spacious and elegant rooms in

the Georgian wing have allowed for

    the inclusion of large-scale furniture

and contemporary art, mixed in with

old finds and antique lighting. Moving

from a period farmhouse where we had acquired

a lot of old pine and reclaimed furniture meant that

we had a lot of pieces that didnt really suit this style

of house, says Ali. So the task of interspersing

them into a new setting was both exciting and

rewarding, and we slowly filtered out what wasnt

appropriate. One of my favourite uses of the old pine

items was a workbench that we picked up at a flea

market. When we moved here we remodelled it to

    create our kitchen island unit.

With a fairly minimalist approach to furnishing,

Alis intriguing pieces are given room to shine against

the neutral backdrop. The entrance hall walls are

painted in Bone Estate Emulsion while the woodwork

is Slipper Satin Oil Eggshell, both from Farrow & Ball,

and here sits one of her favourite finds. We weredelighted to come across this beautiful leather chaise

at a brocante in France. Having travelled home with it

strapped to the roof of our car, it now takes pride of

place here where everyone can see it.

Upstairs, all of the bedrooms had previously

interlinked, but each room now filters off from a long

landing in the older part of the house. It was installed

during the Second World War when the property was

used as a school for boys after it was evacuated

during the bombing of Bristol. In the Georgian part

of the first floor the couple have created their

master bedroom suite, with its own bathroom

and dressing room. This beautifully sparse

and tranquil setting is dominated by the

grand headboard on the bed, which is

flanked by a pair of bedside tables with

bleached oak fretwork and an old nursing

chair that Ali revived. I have a real passion

for chairs, and this Neisha Crosland Zebra fabric

has breathed new life into the design, says Ali. I

think it really enhances the curvaceous shape. A

similar theme has been employed in the guest

bedroom where the imposing bed acts as a

marvellous show piece, while a pair of chic bedside

lamps from John Lewis sit either side.

our pressure-free plans are constantly evolving. One of

the drawbacks of working in the interiors business is

that I use the house to experiment, and it can be very

tempting to change cushion fabrics or try out new

paint colours. The whole thing has taken quite a bit of

time and patience. Financially it couldnt all be done at

    Timefortea

Imust confess I adore afternoon tea. It

recalls a refined and elegant era and

gives me an excuse to use some of

the pretty tea wares Ive collected over the years.

According to Jane Pettigrew, doyenne of

everything tea-related and author of several books on

the subject, afternoon tea became a new social event

in the 1830s and 1840s. Legend has it that Anna Maria,

the Duchess of Bedford invented the meal as she

experienced a sinking feeling in the middle of the

afternoon because of the long gap between luncheon

and dinner. She asked a maid to bring her all the

necessary tea things and something to eat probably

bread and butter to her private room. This lightrepast evolved into a meal especially for ladies (as men

would be out at work or in their clubs).

By 1872, Anna Marias invention was known as a

little tea, thanks to the dainty amount of food served

and the neatness of the meal. Another term was low

tea because guests sat in low armchairs with matching

side-tables on which to place their cups and saucers.

Pot luckThe teapot took pride of place and the basic design

has changed little since tea was first introduced to

Britain from China in the 17th century. The most

exquisite pots came from the town of Yixing which is

east of Shanghai, explains Jane Pettigrew. The clay

deposits varied from the famous purple sand to rich

teaspoons, infusers, strainers, caddy spoons and mote

spoons (these have a pierced bowl and a tapering

handle and were designed to skim the leaves or

motes after the tea hadbeen poured into the cup). If

you feel drawn to textiles then there are fine damask,

linen or cotton tea cloths, which are plain,

The British East India Company imported large

quantities of tea wares, along with teas, silks, spices,

exotic woods, tortoiseshell and silver from the 1700s.

The translucent porcelain tea pots, bowls, saucers and

tea jars which held the precious leaves were highly

    prized by the upper classes.

It wasnt long before European and English potters

wanted a share of the market so they began copying

the Oriental designs, particularly at Meissen. Josiah

Wedgwood perfected his cream ware and re-named it

Queens Ware in honour of Queen Charlotte in 1766.

Porcelain pleasuresThe more enterprising manufacturers and craftsmen

began experimenting with porcelain. Fine tea wares

were made by companies such as Worcester and

Minton and cabinetmakers produced wooden tea

boxes to replace the original porcelain tea jars and as

an alternative to silver caddies. The term caddy

comes from the Malay word kati, which is a unit of

weight around 600g, and came into use towards the

    end of the 18th century.

Today there is a wonderful choice for collectors.

    REAL HOMES Victorian Townhouse

Just a few steps from the bustle of Oxford

Street is an American family's perfect pied

    a terre.

Leading London designer Katharine Pooley was

the natural choice to create a classic and refined

English interior which encompassed the household's

love of global travel. The whole project was a joy to

work on as the clients loved getting involved in every

detail so we knew we were giving them exactly what

    they wanted, says Katharine.

Fortunately the townhouse had already been

restored to a very high standard so the clients, anAmerican businessman, his wife and their three

sons, could focus on creating a personal space

which was comfortable and reflected their own

tastes. They all wanted to pick items which were

interesting to them and to make the place as homely

as possible because the master of the house would

often be there on his own on trips to Europe. The

property is also used as a bolt-hole for summer

    holidays and Christmas breaks.

Katharines design team wanted to use rich, earthy

tones throughout to enhance the nurturing feel. The

house had already been decorated with Farrow & Ball

shades so her designers could concentrate on sourcing

one-off pieces using the services of Colefax andFowler Antiques (colefaxantiques.com) and Guinevere

    (guinevere.co.uk) on the King's Road.

The main challenge was making the scheme

coherent as it was full of eclectic pieces, says

Katharine. As our client was very hands-on we

urged her to consider what would be sympathetic

to the property as a whole. As with all our projects

the key question to ask is how will this piece fit the

available space? And how will this work with

    other elements?

    Best of both

The Victorian townhouse is close to All Soul's

Church and Portland Place. It has a wonderfully

village atmosphere as it is in a quiet residential

street with small restaurants and has a rather

European feel, Katharine says. The team wanted

to reflect the locale. The end result is a

remarkable fusion of English style with eclectic

items from around the world combining the

charm of the Old World with pieces inspired

by Asian schemes. Given that most townhouses

have small rooms and the property was not the

main residence, the smallest details can tell their

own story. We spent a lot of time working on joinery

and every single finishing touch, says Katharine.

Be patient when putting togethera scheme. Let

local dealers know what you are looking for

and keep an eye on auctions. Quality items will

always last and if you are prepared to lavish

attention on beautiful pieces, they will repay

you by looking good for years.

Remember that how something feels and

supports your body is just as important as whatit looks like. Think carefully about the ambience

you want to create in particular rooms and

consider your reception rooms from a guest's

    point of view.

If you are grouping objects you'd be surprised

how moving them just a little can change the

whole feel of a table top or a mantelpiece.

Don't put pressure on yourself to have finished

your scheme by a certain time. Keep

experimenting until it feels right for you.

Never neglect your private space in favour of

public rooms. Even if you are the only person

who sees your bedroom, you should still treat it

with great respect so your storage looks goodinside and out. You should always have

something lovely to wake up to on your

    bedside table.

For example the master bedroom has a very

refined finish in ebony. We were very particular

about patterns in the marquetry in the room

schemes. The team brought in Oriental shapes

tastefully so that geometric patterns are echoed

    carefully throughout the room.

One of the biggest challenges in the project

was working with the quality of the light. In the

Northern hemisphere the light can be quite greywhich is why Mediterranean hues can often fall

flat in British homes. Adding lustre throughout

the scheme from door handles to glass

accessories and the strategic use of mirrors

    helped to combat this.

Family fr iendlyThe familys favourite room is the downstairs den

where they gather to watch films and snuggle up

on the generous settees. This room is dressed with

plaids and leather for a calming and comforting

ambience. While some of us buy with our eyes, the importance of touching and engaging with

objects in our homes is vital. This space, above all,

had to feel really personal for the family, says

Katharine. As the man of the house spends a lot of

time staying in five star hotels on business trips it

really had to feel like home, even when his family

weren't there. Everyone on the team takes a lot of

pride in knowing that when he is in London alone,

this is the place he goes to as he gets back from

    Heathrow to relax and unwind.

The grounded and reassuring feel of the snug

continues in the country style kitchen. Welandscaped the terrace outside to ensure there was

greenery all year round. Although the house is a

stone's throw from the racy side of Oxford Street

with the buzz of the crowds and the shops, it needed

to feel like an oasis of calm, Katharine explains. The

room boasts a generous range cooker and plain white

hand painted cabinets. Glass-fronted units to

showcase favourite crockery add to the homely feel,

so although it is smart, it is still very approachable.

The key question to ask isHow will this piece fit the

    available space?KATHARINE POOLEY, DESIGNER

Art of displayOne of the joys of working on a second home is that

there are fewer requirements for storage but this can

mean a greater emphasis on what is put on display.

With a number of period fireplaces throughout the

property, the design team wanted to keep them

simply dressed and very clean so they didn't

dominate each room. The use of simple ornaments

in metallic hues complements picture frames and

light fittings in similar tones so every detail matches.

As with the best designs, the more a visitor
