It is with great pleasure that we welcome
Amber Wood into our TBI professional staff
team. Amber is our new Director of Operations.
Among her responsibilities, Amber will oversee
our office staff and maintenance staff as well as
coordinate the smooth functioning of all the
activities taking place in our building. She will
collaborate with the other members of our professional staff: Lori
Sagarin, Director of Congregational Learning; Marla Aviva Bentley,
Director of Music; and me.
Of course, Amber is no stranger to TBI having been a member of
our congregation for the past twelve years and having served as a
volunteer, board member, and officer. We are excited to welcome
Amber and look forward to working with her in this new capacity.
I am also pleased to let you know that Anne Richtman-Kaplan is
moving to a new position in our Temple office. Anne will now be our
Executive Assistant. In that capacity, Anne will handle administrative
responsibilities for Temple and for our school. She will provide support
to our professional staff and serve as assistant to me. I am thrilled that
Anne will continue to serve TBI in this new capacity. We should all be
especially grateful to Anne for the extra work that she did over the past
few months since Marlene’s retirement and we look forward to many
more years of Anne’s skilled contribution to our congregation.

I write these words sitting in Jerusalem on the eve of the 17th day of
Tammuz – the minor fast day on which, traditionally, Jews commemorate
the day on which the Romans breached the walls of Jerusalem in the
year 70 CE. In just three weeks, on Monday evening, July 31st, we will
observe Tisha B’Av – the day on which the Jerusalem Temple was
destroyed. I hope that you will join me that evening for our traditional
reading of the Book of Lamentations and for a conversation about the
place and role of Jerusalem in our lives. Our observance will be
graciously hosted by Susan Zoline. Please call the Temple office for the
address and to let us know that you will attend.

fRom the PResiDent
At last year’s High Holiday services, our Director of
Congregational Learning, Lori Sagarin, delivered a
sermon encouraging us to get out of our comfort zone.
That resounded with me as I thought about my role as
incoming TBI President. I do not consider myself to be
comfortable as the center of attention. I am not always
naturally a leader; often I take my cues and I follow. But,
inspired by Lori and in service to this remarkable community, I have
taken on a new role which will require me to lead, to be the center of
attention at times, and generally to get out of my comfort zone as I work
to help keep our community thriving and growing.
Stepping outside one’s comfort zone is an important and almost
universal factor in personal growth. How can we expect to evolve in our
lives and careers if we stick only to habit and routine? Reaching new
heights involves the risk of attempting something we might not succeed
at. Life provides many opportunities to take on new roles, to try new
things, to expand your horizons. Whether your comfort zone is keeping
you from joining a gym, looking for a new job, going back to school or
from volunteering at TBI, perhaps you may consider whether getting out
of your comfort zone might be worth the risk.
The TBI Presidency is a challenge that will require more than just
stepping out of my comfort zone. Here at TBI we engage in a wide vari-
ety of activities, from Adult Education programs to Shabbat Services;
from Mitzvah Corps providing meals at a Shiva house, to our Social
Action team taking in a refugee family; from Hebrew and Religious
School to Nosh Café to Havdallah and a Movie to our volunteer choir,
Koleynu, and so much more. Coordinating these varied activities and
finding new ways to enhance our community to make it even more
engaging and meaningful is a major undertaking.
Happily, our community is blessed to have an incredible group of
volunteers, staff, and professionals all of whom work hard to make TBI
run as seamlessly as possible for such a complex organization. As I take
on my new role, I am thankful for these important individuals who give
so much to make our community strong, regardless of whether they
have any title or get any credit for it.
While I am working to move out of my comfort zone, TBI also must
move out of its comfort zone. TBI is entering its 100th year. We
have many great memories, a meaningful history, and some amazing
achievements to celebrate. But we must not rest on our laurels. TBI
must look to the future. We must find new ways to engage our members
and to provide for the community with an eye toward keeping us
relevant for another century.
Like TBI, the Chicago Cubs have also been around for more than a
century. They certainly have had their share of adversity. (Anyone can
have a bad century.) At the recent commencement at Yale University,
Theo Epstein, President of the Cubs Baseball Operations, spoke about
the way the team came together during the rain delay of Game 7 of the
World Series. Despite blowing a 3-run lead in the previous inning, they
stayed positive; they focused on each other and on helping the team
achieve victory, rather than focusing on their own mistakes and the
mistakes of others. As we embark on this new administration and TBI’s
second century, we can learn from this group of young men and take
on our roles here and elsewhere with our heads up, feeling part of a
real team, alert and aware of others, embracing difference, employing
empathy, genuinely connecting, and putting collective interests ahead
of our own.
That is what so many here at TBI, both the staff and the many
volunteers who keep our community going each day, already do. I am
honored and proud to have this special role in our community as we
begin our 100th year. We have many goals and hopes and dreams and
we are off and running to begin the celebration of our first 100 years
as we move ahead to our next century as a progressive, inclusive
community.

high hoLy Days ReminDeR
The High Holy Days tickets and information will be mailed in mid-
August.
Please remember:
• Tickets are not required for Selichot, 2nd Day Rosh Hashanah, or
afternoon services on Yom Kippur.
• 2016 - 2017 dues must be current to receive tickets. Speak to a
financial officer if you have questions.
• Additional ticket requests must be received in the Temple office by
September 11th.
Please note: This year we will begin to
use a new machzor (holy day prayerbook). It
comes as a set of books, one each for Rosh
Hashanah and Yom Kippur. The TBI price is
$36 per set. Because TBI was able to get
this discounted price by buying in bulk and
then selling individual sets to our members,
we must restrict your payment options to either check or cash (exact
change requested); no credit card payments or billing will be possible.
It will be necessary for every worshipper to acquire a copy of
Mishkan Hanefesh. It will not be feasible to follow the service using our
former machzor, The Gates of Repentance, and we will not have a
supply of loaners. If you no longer desire to keep your copy of The
Gates of Repentance, we will collect them at Temple.
For additional information, please call the Temple office.

The summer is often a time for relaxing. Although I had
a wonderful trip to Israel filled with learning, time with
Eliana, and a lot of great eating, it is now back to work
planning for the busy months ahead.
This is going to be a very special year in the life of TBI
and its members. As we approach our centennial, we
will take the opportunity to honor our past and build
towards a very promising future. Throughout the year we will be holding
programs that will do just this. The calendar included with this bulletin,
includes numerous opportunities to celebrate!
As part of the centennial we are looking to grow our membership by 100,
to add 100 new households to our wonderful community. The only way this
can happen is with your help. We need each of you to think of those in your
lives who are not currently affiliated and with whom you would like to share
your TBI community. This could be a neighbor, a family member, or a co-
worker. Invite them to Shabbat in the Park, bring them to Kabbalat Shabbat,
or have them arrange a time to meet with our professional staff to learn more
about our community. Our able new Membership task force chairs, Alyssa
and Jordan Berman Cutler are eager to get to work and begin the goal of
growing our membership.
The faculty and I are busy preparing for the fall as well. We will be
continuing our Hebrew initiative thanks to the securing of two grants to
further this work. We will also be launching a history project through the
auspices of the Steinhardt Foundation that will help the 7th graders engage
in a Project-Based Learning initiative to study our congregation’s history.
All in all it promises to be a very busy year. I look forward to sharing more
updates with you as the year progresses.

We are young mothers, we are mothers of college age or married
children, we are grandmothers, we are single, we are married, we are
widowed, we are independent women. We work outside the home, we
are working moms, we are retirees. We are lawyers, teachers, doctors,
executives, business owners, and community leaders. Simply put, we
are a very diverse group of women. In other words we are every woman.
Temple Beth Israel and Sisterhood TBI are both turning 100 this
year. We have supported each other throughout the last century and, as
we embark on our 100th anniversary, we are looking forward to a year
of celebration, learning, social action, fundraising, and worship as one
community.
We have already planned a multitude of events and activities for our
centennial year and have many more in the works. Our goal is to
present programs and plan events that appeal to many different tastes
and interests.
We also hope to inspire in our members the desire and to provide
chances to assume leadership roles. Sisterhood TBI offers many
opportunities to join, support, or lead a committee.
Thank you to our new and continuing board members for your com-
mitment to Sisterhood as we all share and participate in our centennial
year.

Each Bulletin will include a tidbit about Sisterhood's history. This
month's tidbit is that a month after forming, Sisterhood TBI held the

this was a precursor of our Annual Artisan Faire?) On May 8, 1918 our

Thank you to our new and continuing board members for your com-
mitment to Sisterhood as we all share and participate in our centennial
year.

Temple Beth Israel meet to establish the new Sisterhood Temple
Beth Israel. This is just four years after 156 delegates representing
52 congregational women’s groups met in Cincinnati, OH to organize
the National Federation of Temple Sisterhoods (now Women of
Reform Judaism). Carrie O. Simon was chosen to serve as temporary
chairwoman and later as the first president of NFTS.
Our Sisterhood has a long history of supporting both TBI and WRJ
and, along with Temple, will celebrate our Centennial this year. Look for
exciting events, activities, learning opportunities, and celebrations from
Sisterhood all year long.
Each Bulletin will include a tidbit about Sisterhood's history. This
month's tidbit is that a month after forming, Sisterhood TBI held the
Sisterhood Bazaar at the Hollywood Barn on Kedzie Avenue. (Perhaps
this was a precursor of our Annual Artisan Faire?) On May 8, 1918 our
First Installation of Sisterhood TBI Officers was held at the Terminal Hall.
To kick off our Centennial, the buyer who makes the 100th purchase
at the September 10th Bake Sale will receive a $25.00 gift certificate for
the Judaica Gift Shop. Happy Buying!

fRom the PResiDent
Here at TBI we engage in a wide vari-
ety of activities, from Adult Education programs to Shabbat Services;
from Mitzvah Corps providing meals at a Shiva house, to our Social
