as one of Osceola’s most dependable and dedicated teachers, having both a wonderful command of all facets of the curriculum and the gift to know how to present them successfully to her students, all of whom have had minimal success in reading. Kissimmee, FL - El Centro para las Artes de Osceola desea felicitar a los estudiantes y maestros del Distrito Escolar de Osceola, incluyendo las escuelas privadas, charter y los de educación en casa que participaron en el 22do Espectáculo Anual de Artes para Estudiantes del Distrito Escolar Osceola el cual permanecerá en exhibición en el Centro hasta el 15 de abril de 2012.28 maestros de arte sometieron

hasta 10 piezas de obras de arte de cada escuela para competir por las cintas para 1ero, 2do y 3er lugar en las siguientes divisiones : Escuela Superior, Escuela Intermedia, Elemental de 3 a 5 y Elemental de K a 2. Todos los estudiantes recibieron una mención honorífica o una cinta por ganar uno de los tres primeros lugares en las siguientes categorías : Pintura, Medio Mixto, Dibujo, Cerámica/Escultura, Gráfica/Fotografía y la Categoría Especial - Retrato. Se otorgó una cinta de Mejor del Espectáculo.

Vincent Medina, estudiante de 2do grado de escuela elemental, cuya maestra es Laurie Dunwoody, ganó la cinta de Mejor del Espectáculo y un cheque de $100 como premio por su escultura de una girafa. Ayudando a entregar los premios

este año en la recepción de apertura el jueves, 15 de marzo estuvieron la Coordinadora de Artes del Condado Debbie Fahmie, la Asistente del Superintendente Melba Luciano, la Maestra de Artes Linda Robinson y la Directora de Artes Visuales del Centro Jules Davidson. “Esta exhibición es siempre muy divertida para asistir y compartir con nuestra comunidad. Hubo sobre 230 piezas de obras de arte y se entregaron 74 cintas de premiación,” dijo Davidson.La exhibición del Espectáculo de Arte

Orlando, FL – After an exhilarating season filled with vampires, mad scientists and an edgy battle between the sexes, the Orlando Ballet continues to push the envelope with a new twist on a classical favorite. Swans: Black and White promises an enchanting look at the classic romance Swan Lake. The performance takes place March 30 – April 1 and closes the Ballet’s 2011-2012 season.Based on the Russian folk tale of a

young princess transformed into a swan by a vengeful sorcerer, Swans: Black and White illustrates the undying love between two childhood friends and the curse which threatens to tear them apart. Choreographed by Artistic Director

Robert Hill after Marius Petipa, and set to Tchaikovsky’s powerful Swan Lake score, Swans: Black and White blends a beloved classical tale with innovative choreography. “We look forward to presenting this

production,” said Hill. “It’s designed to delight our audiences with a story they love while surprising them with an

unexpected approach. We are proud to explore this theme of the duality of human nature to the stage.” Young ballet enthusiasts can also

enjoy a similar story as part of the Orlando Ballet’s Family Series production, The Swan Princess (March 31 at 11 a.m.). primaria criolla republicana de Puerto Rico no estuvo libre de controversia. Al final, Mitt Romney se impuso sin problemas sobre sus contendores, incluyendo a Rick Santorum.Mientras esos precandidatos han

usado a los indocumentados como piñata para ganar adeptos en las primarias entre los sectores más conservadores de Estados Unidos con una retórica no sólo anti inmigrante sino anti latina, luego cruzaron el charco a buscar los votos boricuas que poco les habrían importado a no ser porque a Romney se le ha hecho tan difícil cerrar el trato con los republicanos.Claro está, no son sólo los 20

delegados boricuas su interés, sino los cuatro millones de puertorriqueños radicados en Estados Unidos, muchos en estados importantes en la elección general, como Florida, que sí pueden votar en noviembre contrario a los isleños.Además de aprovechar la escala

para darse un bañito de sol en su hotel en la Isla, según muestra una foto que circuló, Santorum ofendió a algunos cuando en su accidentada escala dijo que si los puertorriqueños quieren la estadidad, el inglés tenía que ser su idioma primario. Oh my

God! ¡Ay Dios mío! ¿De verdad dijo eso en la Isla de cuatro millones de hispanoparlantes donde el español y el inglés figuran como idiomas oficiales y el español predomina? ¿Dónde queda la ‘estadidad jíbara’? El próximo plebiscito sobre el “estatus” de Puerto Rico es el 6 de noviembre, día de las elecciones. Santorum dijo que “la ley” requiere

que los estados hablen inglés, pero el inglés no es ordenado por ley federal. Parece que dejó en casa la Constitución que siempre carga consigo y el numerito hizo que el ex senador del Partido Nuevo Progresista (PNP), que aboga por la estadidad para la Isla, Oreste Ramos, pidiera que se borrara su nombre de la lista de delegados comprometidos a apoyar a Santorum.El diario El Vocero citó una carta

de Ramos señalando que “aunque tal requisito sería inconstitucional, y además se estrellaría contra nuestra realidad sociológica y lingüística, como cuestión de principio no puedo respaldar a una persona que sostenga dicha posición. Como puertorriqueño, hispanoparlante y ciudadano de Estados Unidos, considero ofensiva la posición del señor Santorum”.Santorum luego aclaró que la prensa

había tergiversado sus declaraciones y habló de lo importante que es hablar más de un idioma aunque su

tardía defensa del bilingüismo ofenda a muchos de sus copartidarios y seguidores que ven el bilingüismo y la diversidad como un problema y no como un beneficio para este país.Y es que para estos sectores

recalcitrantes ni siquiera los ciudadanos latinos pasan la prueba. Santorum siempre habló de Puerto

Rico como un país, esto para beneplácito de algunos sectores boricuas, pero para molestia de otros que por décadas han pensado que si los puertorriqueños llegaran a elegir la estadidad en un plebiscito cuyos resultados sí cuenten, el Congreso de Estados Unidos los recibiría con los brazos abiertos y de inmediato

le colocarían la estrella 51 a la Red, White and Blue. ¿Se imaginan un estado de cuatro millones de personas cuyo idioma predominante es el español y que muy probablemente se inclinarían a ser demócratas? Pero eso es harina de otro costal.Muchos se preguntarán qué tienen

que ver los boricuas con la inmigración y cómo las muestras de falta de conocimiento, las ofensas directas o veladas, y la retórica nos afectan. national republican primaries of Puerto Rico weren’t free of controversy. At the end, Mitt Romney won over his contenders, including the defeat of Rick Santorum.While these candidates have used

the issue of illegal immigrants as a prominent issue to win over more votes at the primaries in the most conservative of sectors in the United States, they have also supported an anti immigration and anti Latino stance. The Puerto Rican vote didn’t matter before, but because Romney has yet to secure his candidacy with the republicans, he makes a trip to Puerto Rico to try and gain their votes. In addition to using his trip to Puerto

Rico to sunbathe in one of the island’ hotel, according to what a photo circulating demonstrates, Santorum offended some of the people when he accidentally said that if Puerto Ricans want stability, English needs to become their primary language.

Oh My God! Did he really say that in a place where four million people use Spanish and English as the official language, but the primary tongue is Spanish? Where does this leave the natives and traditionalists of Puerto Rico? The next plebiscite about the status of Puerto Rico will take place November 6, on the day of elections.Santorum states that the law

requires that all states speak English, but English is not mandated by the federal law. It looks like he left the Constitution he always carries with him at home and this ordeal prompted ex Senator Oreste Ramos, of the “Partido Nuevo Progresista (PNP)” which advocated for Puerto Rico to become a state of the United States, to ask that his name be removed from the list of delegates committed to the support of Santorum. The daily paper El Vocero, quoted

a letter from Ramos that states “although such requirement would be unconstitutional, along with going against the social and linguistic

reality, as a question of principle I cannot support a person that takes such a position. As a Puerto Rican, Spanish speaker and citizen of the United States, I am offended by Mr. Santorum’s position.” Later, Santorum stated that the

media had twisted his statements and spoke about the importance of speaking more than one language, although his late apology in defense of being bilingual offends many of his party members and supporters, who see being bilingual and diversity as a problem as opposed to a benefit for this country.It seems that for these closed minded

sectors Latin citizens are just not good enough.Santorum always spoke about

Puerto Rico as its own country; this was welcomed by some Puerto Rican parties, but a bother to others, who for decades have thought that if the Puerto Rican people chose to become a state of the United States, Congress would receive them with open arms

and immediately add the 51st star to the red, white and blue. Could you imagine a state where four million people, whose primary language is Spanish and who would most likely be a democratic state? Well, this is another issue in and of itself. Many may ask themselves, what

do Puerto Ricans have to do with immigration and how does the lack of knowledge, direct or hidden offences and the rhetoric affect them? In the first place, we are all Latinos, undocumented or citizens by birth. Secondly, in the most radical and conservative sectors there is no difference between a Puerto Rican citizen and an immigrant of another Latin American country. They place us all in the same category. Ignorance and discrimination are not able to distinguish. If you don’t believe, ask the Puerto

Orlando, FL - College students from Japan will soon be studying at Valencia College while interning at Walt Disney World. Representatives from four Japanese colleges visited Valencia on February 16 to finalize an agreement that would provide for overseas academic training opportunities for their students. The agreement, established by

Valencia Continuing Education, links academic coursework at the college with an academic training experience at Disney. During the program, students are enrolled in a six-month certificate course and are placed in an internship at the Walt Disney World Resort that relates to their major area of study. The program is designed to help students apply the knowledge and skills learned in the classroom to a real-world environment. Students who successfully complete the academic training requirements receive a certificate in Business Management from Valencia College.During the visit, two agreements were

signed with Baiko Gakuin University and Shimonoseki City University, and three more are pending with the University of Kitakyushu, The University of Tokushima, and Akita University. This marked the group’s third visit to Valencia, which was coordinated by university co-operative associations located in Japan. The college expects the students to

begin their program in February 2013 with a group of 15 to 25 students. The agreement came following U.S.

State Department approval in 2011 to allow Valencia to accept exchange visitors on J-1 visas. Foreign visitors are eligible to participate in the J visa program if there is a written agreement between their educational institution and Valencia. They must also meet certain requirements for English proficiency; Valencia offers an Intensive English Program for those whose English does not meet the requirements. En vez de permitir que sus estudiantes de 11mo y 12mo grado que “vuelven a tomar” el FCAT, pierdan la motivación después del FCAT de primavera, la Sra. Brillant introduce a sus estudiantes a la poesía de una manera única e intrigante, que todos los estudiantes terminan escribiendo, editando y analizando la poesía como si fueran críticos de la alfabetización. Los estudiantes se integran totalmente en la lectura, la poesía y se sienten lo suficientemente confiados para preguntarles a otros maestros y adultos sus opiniones sobre los poemas.

Osceola County, FL - As a paraprofessional for the Osceola School District’s Alternative Programs Department at the Juvenile Justice Commitment Facility, Laura Walker displays an exemplary work ethic as part of the collaboration necessary to provide effective and relevant educational services to adjudicated youth. Her hard work and dedication, along with her desire to help students better themselves, have earned her the prestigious title of Osceola School District’s 2012 “School-Related Employee of the Year.”On a daily basis, Ms. Walker is the

first to arrive and the last to leave the lockdown facility to ensure that all tasks are complete for both educators and students. She arrives early to set up computers for the vocational classes, and monitors and maintains a library of over 500 books kept in locking book carts, of which she personally catalogued each one

and arranged them according to subjects for the students. She also is instrumental in testing every student that enters the facility in STAR math and reading. In addition, she monitors Accelerated Reader tests and scores, encouraging students to do their very best by asking questions relating to the story prior to testing. This past summer, one of the

programs housed at this facility was shut down and all of the school equipment, furniture, supplies, and materials had to be moved and/or surplused. She took initiative on the project to label every piece of school property, to use her own vehicle to move items, and to set up the new classrooms. Her outstanding organization and attention to detail prevented the instructional momentum of the teachers and students in summer school from being interrupted in any way.

Ms. Walker has also been instrumental in getting the school involved in charitable activities. Her involvement with the Ronald McDonald House collection of can tabs has created a friendly competition between the adults at the facility, as well as in various classrooms throughout the district.Colleagues are quick to point out that

the word “no” is not in Ms. Walker’s vocabulary. Whether she is asked to moved furniture, help maintain teacher records, work with a student, distribute materials, set up classes, or ask for donations for student recognitions; she will gladly perform the task in an outstanding manner. Superintendent Andrews will now

proudly forward her nomination on to the Florida Department of Education for consideration for the State’s “School-Related Employee of the Year” award.

programas de esta facilidad fue cerrado y todo el equipo escolar,

mobiliario y materiales tuvieron que ser movidos y/o enviados a otro lugar. Ella tomó la iniciativa de hacer un proyecto para poner etiquetas a cada pieza de propiedad escolar, utilizar su propio automóvil para mover los artículos y arreglar los nuevos salones de clase. Su extraordinaria organización y atención a los detalles, previnieron que se interrumpiera el momento de instrucción de los maestros y estudiantes durante las clases de verano.La Sra. Walker, también ha sido de

vital importancia de que la escuela participara en actividades de obras benéficas. He grew into a very talented center and was no longer fit for a backup

role. Knowing he had value, the Orlando Magic traded him to the Suns for a package centered around Vince Carter. As much as that did not work out

positively for Orlando, Gortat has proven to be an excellent starting-caliber center

in Phoenix. He is averaging over 15 points and 10 rebounds a game for the Suns this

season, but was squashed by his former teammate on Wednesday night.Orlando was coming off of back to back losses

against Chicago and Miami, and were looking to get the stale taste of failure out of their mouths. Unfortunately for the Suns, that would all come against them. Orlando jumped out to a lead early and never let up. Phoenix’s most potent weapon is the pick and roll with Steve Nash and Gortat, and Orlando came into the game very prepared for it. They shut both players down, only allowing 2 assists for Nash and 4 points for Gortat. Howard had a great game even for his standards, scoring 28 points and pulling down 16 rebounds in his dismantling of Gortat. Ryan Anderson shot the ball extremely well,

scoring 29 points while hitting 7 three-pointers. His backup Glen Davis had one of his best games in a Magic uniform, scoring 16 points and grabbing 7 boards. Guinness Book of World Records attempt to host the world’s largest Zumba class came up just a little short, there was still a very big winner at the event. The American Cancer Society received a check for $20,000 from the proceeds of the record-breaking attempt. The event adjudicator representing

the Guinness Book of World Records tallied 1,847 participants who

exercised to Zumba’s spirited Latin melodies for 30 minutes. Solivita needed 2,013 participants to set the new world record. The community of Twickenham, United Kingdom, still retains the record set on June 11, 2011. “Even though we came up a bit

short it still proved to be a very festive event. Everyone who participated had a great time,” said Ken Plonski, AV Homes’ communications director.

AV Homes, builder of the active adult community Solivita, was one of nearly two dozen companies who sponsored the world record attempt. “There were a lot of Solivita residents participating, but we also had a great turnout from the people of Poinciana and the surrounding area. We are very grateful for everyone’s support,” Plonski added.Proceeds from sponsorships and VIP

registrations raised $10,000 dollars
