Natural User Interfaces (NUI) are implemented at ports for crane operation
Description: The concept of Natural User Interfaces (NUI) covers computer systems which are operated through natural human actions such as touch, speech, gaze etc. NUI operated systems are curently used in a variety of devices that are used every day:• Touch recognition is the main way of operating most of todays smartphones.• Gesture recognition is used in multiple gaming consoles such as Microsoft’s Kinect, Nintendo’s Wii and Playstations Move.• Speech recognition is used in many car GPS’es and for operating smartphone assistants suh as Apple’s Siri.• Gaze-tracking and recognition is used for operation of computers by people suffering from paralyzis or having other special needs. In 2011, Leonovo and Tobii
presented a gaze-operated laptop.• Brain-machine interfaces (BCI) where neural signals from the brain is used by a device to control a computer, a wheelchair or a prostetic limb.Allowing for an explorative mindset, the future application of NUI controlled devices in blue industries could cover:• Cranes operated through touch recognition and gaze-tracking• Chemical addition to mud streams on drilling rigs is controlled using speech recognition.• Data collection and sampling on wind turbines is done through voice-operated systems.
Benefits (to people/profits/planet): NUI operated systems can benefit the blue industries on multiple leves:Reduce cost: Intuitive actions are carried out faster than non-intuitive actions. Today, devices which are developed with NUI are done so to be easier and faster touse. In the offshore industries, faster operations equals reuced costs and so NUI operated devices and systems can represent an innovative cost saver for manyindustries.Improve safety: In many cases, removing the physical interaction between humans and machines can remove safety risks. NUI operated devices and systems canrepresent a safety improver in some cases.

Description: This idea covers the opportunity to develop 3D printing for repair of faulty components and re-design of wind turbine components. The idea isrepresented through 3 technological steps, in the end resulting in repairs and updates being carried out without sending personnel offshore.STEP 1: 1:1 REPAIRSWhen components are due for repair or replacement, personnel is sent to the wind turbine; personnel can bring portable 3D printers or 3D printers can bepermanently installed at the turbines. The faulty components are either repaired using 3D printing or remanufactured completely.STEP 2: IN SITU RE-DESIGNThe next step after 1:1 repairs, is to widen the concept to also cover updates to components. If a component requires repair but the existing version of thecomponent has been updated or re-designed, then instead of 3D printing a 1:1 version of the faulty component, the updated version of the component is printedinstead. If the updated component requires update of other connected components as well, these are also re-printed in their updated version. The result is an insitu technological update of the turbine components.STEP 3: 3D PRINTER OPERATION THROUGH AUGMENTED REALITY (AR)If 3D printers are installed at the wind turbines (e.g. inside the nacelles), this opens up the opportunity for operation through robotics rather than personnel.Robotic installations can be operated away from site. Sensors mounted at the wind turbine gives the operator a high-detail AR image of the target part of the windturbine where repairs or component updates are needed, and the operator can then operate the 3D printer through AR software.
Benefits (to people/profits/planet): In situ 3D printing of components represents a large opportunity for cost saving for the wind turbine park owners. Recycling ofmaterial greatly reduced the price of components, because rather than paying for the materials and production of the components, the park owner needs only topay for the 3D design of the component, which is also less costly to transport compared to physical objects. The safety risk associated with transportation ofpersonnel is also largely reduced during Step 3, resulting in more safe operation of wind turbines, especially in offshore settings.

Description: The Dutch fisheries cluster has been pioneering the use of electric pulse fishing. The system is also used to a limited extent in the UK andGermany. Electric pulse fishing is a fishing technique sometimes used in trawl fisheries which produces a limited electric field above the seabed to catch fish. The pulse trawl gear consists of a number of electrodes, attached to the gear in the tow direction, that emit short electric pulses. The electrodes replace thetickler chains that are used in traditional beam trawl fishery. The pulse trawl fishery is mainly aimed at flatfish like sole, with by-catch plaice. In addition, thepulse trawl gear is applied in shrimp fisheries on a limited scale. Technically, the use of electricity to catch fish is prohibited in European waters. However, the European Union is able to provide exemptions to this rule since 2007. These exemptions are now mainly used by Dutch and British[2] trawlers in theNorth Sea.
Benefits (to people/profits/planet): Research on electric pulse fishing is ongoing but, Europêche pointed out that the catch of non-targeted species hasbeen reduced by 50% and the fuel consumption of vessels used by 46%. The gear used also has a lighter impact on the sea bed, reducing the area swept by20%.So the benefits are:-less discards (catch of non-targeted fish species)-Significantly less disturbance of the sea floor-Lower fuel consumption of fishing vessels, leading to lower CO2 emissions.
Key actors (& roles): Fishing companies (buying and using the electric pulse fishing gear); Suppliers of fishing gear; Shipyards (conversion of trawlers toelectric pulse fishing); Regulatory authorities (local and European, including European Commission); Scientific institutes (research on effects of electric pulsefishing); Industry associations (Europeche etc.) influencing regulatory authorities towards acceptance of electric pulse fishing

Description:With the world population expected to reach 9 billion before 2050, agricultural production has to increase with 70%. At the same time, less fresh water willbecome available for agriculture so the challenge is to produce more food with less water. While everybody is focussing on fresh water for agriculturalproduction, Salt Farm Texel has a different perspective. Worldwide about 1.5 billion hectares of land is salt affected and this number increases with 3hectare every minute. Also, the amount of brackish water is equal to the amount of fresh water. Up until now, these saline resources of the world have notbeen recognized as a way to increase agricultural production. Now, Salt Farm Texel is demonstrating the possibilities to use these resources by means ofcultivating salt tolerant crops.Salt Farm Texel specializes in evaluating the salt tolerance of conventional crops and halophytes, performing large-scale screening of possible salt tolerantcultivars, and developing saline agricultural practices. We work together with NGO's, breeders and farmers across the world.
Benefits (to people/profits/planet):One of the many adverse effects of global climate change is the rise of sea levels, which scientists say can increase the salinity level of fresh water reserves. As saline water cannot be used for irrigation, farm fields close to the seashore are lost to agriculture. But a farm in Netherlands has managed to growhealthy and tasty vegetables in soil irrigated with salt water.Salinization is reducing the world’s irrigated lands by 1 to 2 percent annually, according to the U.N.'s Food and Agriculture Organization.Country's in delta areas are struggling with this huge issue. Description:Vessels engines powered by waves. They are hybrid ships that use both waves energy and electrical power provided by solar panels placed onboard. In this way they can sail without CO2 emissions and without refuelling. They should be more lightweight than the today ships because they don't need place for fuel or big engines that better exploit the wavespower. The technology is already tested and validated, the optimization is still ongoing.

Description: Northern Europe is characterized by many rivers and sea arms, which are not all crossed by bridges. Smaller ferries, which cancarry People, bicycles and perhaps up to one car have been operating in the past in many locations, but often they have been replaced by landbased traffic for cost reasons. More recently technology has developed in the following main areas, which can be combined to develop amodular (=reconfigurable standard components):- Lightweight composite materials: light, robust, no maintenance- Fuel cells, battery or current driven: no emission, rechargeable- Autonomous driving: no operator, flexible use "on demand"Similar developments have been implemented or are in development, but those did not cover yet the large market for small ferries. Thosesmall ferries could yield immediate benefit for smaller communities and could serve as a good test for the a.m. key technologies beforeapplication in larger commercial ships.
