A Note from theExecutive DirectorIn October I began my 25th year at Perkins

Center. At a recent board of trustees meetinga board member asked me what I wanted mylegacy at the Center to be? My initialresponse was abrupt because I didn’t reallylike the idea of thinking about legacy and inhindsight that’s probably because I amrelentlessly focused on doing—somewhat

obsessive with my to-do lists, crossing off completed tasks and addingnew ones in an endless cycle. But since that fateful meeting I can’tseem to get the word, legacy, out of my mind.

In the last couple of grant proposals I’ve been including the CoreValues of Perkins Center’s 2014–2017 Long Range Plan. These Valuescapture the spirit of Perkins Center and I’ve realized that it’s my contri-bution to these Core Values that I envision as my legacy, it’s a culturein which these core values are embraced even as they continue toevolve and change over time.

At Perkins Center for the Arts, we value:

n an environment that supports the arts as essential to ourhumanity

n the imagination, knowledge, and discipline of art making.n the culture of contribution that has inspired our legacy andstrive to preserve and steward our creative, environmental and his-torical resources.

n a culture of integrity, respect, inclusion, teamwork, humor, service and excellence.

These Core Values are the foundation for how Perkins Center oper-ates and while the nonprofit and for-profit worlds share a commensu-rate work ethic, the culture of nonprofits tends to be very different.Collective decision making and working in partnership with bothboard and staff are critical components in a successful nonprofitorganization. While ultimately a board vote or final decision by the EDoften takes place, much energy is put into discussing the issues, seek-ing consensus, letting every voice be heard—and sometimes heardagain and again—so that when action is taken, it is a collective actiondesigned to fulfill and deliver the mission and values of the organiza-tion. Gathering input from everyone takes time, but it has the fortu-nate byproduct of buy-in, as each board member, each staff member, becomes committed to the organizations mission with a willingness towork together making sure the mission is delivered and clients areserved. After all, we are all in this together.

Another way that we’re different than the for-profit world is that noone owns a nonprofit—we serve some portion of the public good, delivering a product and services as outlined in our mission, “promot-ing excellence in the Arts and providing a wide range of creativeopportunities for all people at every level of artistic development.” Webuild a business around the mission, for the public; you might saythere is collective ownership in a nonprofit, a unique ownership struc-ture and one which has made me so proud to be a part of Perkins Cen-ter. And, equally, I thank you for being a participant, a supporter, avoice and participant in the life and programs of the Perkins Center forthe Arts!

Alan Willoughby, Executive Director

Meet “Joe Getz”For the next several issues of ournewsletter, you will have theopportunity to “meet” some ofthe members of our Conservatoryof Music faculty. In this issue, we’dlike to introduce Joe Getz. Joeteaches percussion and has beenwith the Perkins Center sinceOctober, 2008. He graduated fromThe University of the Arts with aBM in music performance andwon the Excellence in DrumsetAward as a graduating senior.Since completion of his degreehe has worked with numerousindependent artists as a record-ing and performing artist.

“My teaching style is to ensurethat all of my students have afirm grasp on the language ofrhythm, since drumming is prima-rily rhythm-centered. Then wemove on to technique. Thisinvolves learning the proper wayto hold the sticks and strike theinstrument while learning basicmusic notation. Coordination isthen addressed on the drumsetwith simple beats andexercises. Lessons are tailored toeach student’s goals. I use manydifferent printed methods toteach from, as well as videos,Modern Drummer articles, andrecorded music.”

Joe is a busy musician, withrecording sessions, periodic smalltours and performances that takeplace in and around the Philadel-phia area. He plays with severalbands, including Mercury RadioTheater, Geology, Cape Wrath, theByways and F. Woods. He has alsoplayed in pit orchestras for the-atrical productions and writtensoundtrack music for local filmmakers.

In his free time, Joe likes to spendas much time as possible out-doors. He enjoys the visual artsand likes to paint and draw whenthe inspiration strikes. He recentlyhad a one-person installation ofoil paintings in Philadelphia. Joealso attends as many live con-certs as possible from all styles ofmusic to broaden his musical sen-sibilities.

When asked what he likes bestabout teaching at Perkins Centerfor the Arts, Joe said “I findPerkins to be an extremely posi-tive and inspirational environ-ment for young people to comeand study the arts; that is whatmost excites me about being atPerkins. It has been such a greatpleasure to work alongside suchan amazing staff and faculty overthe years. The students and theirfamilies have made me feel thatthe community of Moorestownand its surrounding neighbor-hoods are very friendly and hos-pitable.”
