Unit Description

To learn basic perm student will understand hair formation, its structural characteristics and

physical and chemical properties of hair, which form the fundamental basis of hair. Student will

also learn origin and formation principles of permanent wave and factors that affect wave

formation through perm chemical’s 1 and 2 liquid’s components.

Application of the Unit Students can become a hair designer with theoretical and practical knowledge and a talented

beauty care expert through basic skill training and field-centered education that will help students

adapt faster.

Licensing/Regulatory Information

This unit contains information for taking Beauty Care Technician Certification and Higher Beauty

Care Technician Certification exams.

Pre-Requisites

This unit must be assessed after the following prerequisite unit:

No Pre-Requisites

Elements and Performance Criteria Pre-Content

Elements and Performance Criteria Element refers to

a key outcome

of a competency

unit

Performance Criteria describes the outcome needed to demonstrate

achievement of the element. Performance assessment is carried out in

accordance with the “Evidence Guide”.

Definition and

history of

permanent wave

Permanent wave means a wave that is permanent or lasts for a long time and

is done with physical and chemical means on the hair

Principles of

permanent wave Perm works by applying physical and chemical means to natural hair to

change its structure and form semi-permanently

Permanent wave

tools and

instruments

Permanent wave procedure materials include permanent wave lotion liquid 1,

liquid 2, rod, tail comb, end paper, hair protection product, customer gown,

towel, cape for perm, rubber glove, plastic cap, rubber band, stick, timer,

wagon, shampoo, rinse and electric heating instrument, etc.

Permanent wave

procedure

1. Scalp and hair diagnosis before procedure.

2. Presentation on procedure process.

3. Presentation on precautions.

This section will explain the required skills and knowledge in this unit.

Required Skills 1. Diagnosis of scalp and hair before procedure

1) Check health status of scalp

2) Check health status of hair

2. Procedure process

1) Preprocess

(1) Shampoo

(2) Apply product appropriate for the scalp status

(3) Precutting

(4) Select perm rod

(5) Blocking and sectioning

Page 4: Permanent-Wave Practices€¦ · Permanent wave means a wave that is permanent or lasts for a long time and is done with physical and chemical means on the hair Principles of permanent

4

2) Wave process

(1) Apply liquid 1 (reducing agent)

(2) Winding

(3) Pin sticks

(4) Put on towel and cotton

(5) Apply liquid 1

(6) Put on plastic cap

(7) Determine processing time

(8) Test curl

(9) Mid-rinse

(10) Apply liquid 2 (oxidizing agent)

(11) Take off rod

3. Precautions

1) Find reasons why permanent wave doesn’t work well

2) Effects on the skin

Required Knowledge Knowledge of scalp or hair while permanently winding

1. Health status of scalp

Scalp must be examined very carefully. Scalp must be checked carefully for scratch or

infections and permanent procedure must be postponed if any damage is found until the

scalp recovers.

2. Health status of hair

Customer’s hair health status changes depending on natural causes such as exposure to

strong sunlight or wind, climate of the region, altitude and humidity, and also past physical

and chemical beauty care procedures.

Basic knowledge of permanent perm

Page 5: Permanent-Wave Practices€¦ · Permanent wave means a wave that is permanent or lasts for a long time and is done with physical and chemical means on the hair Principles of permanent

5

Beauty care terms, principles and the following techniques

1. Humidity – Curl formation depends on hair’s moisture level

2. Tension – Tension can be given for healthy hair, but for a more damaged hair no tension is

important

3. Temperature – Hair curl formation depends on temperature, and over time can do great

damage so this is very important.

4. Angle - Volume depends on the hair panel’s angle so understand the importance of angle.

5. Speed – Understand that an appropriate speed must be maintained.

Evidence Guide

The Evidence Guide provides guildelines for assessment and should be viewed in conjunction with

the Performance Criteria, Required Skills and Knowledge, Range Statement and the Assessment

Guidelines for Training Package.

Overview of assessment

Critical aspects for

assessment and

evidence required to

demonstrate

competency in this unit

The following skills will be assessed

-Exact understanding in components, principles, theoretical concepts

and visual differences in permanents will be evaluated.

-Procedure appropriate to the topic through practice in design

application cases will be evaluated.

-Creative and artistic styling will be evaluated.

-Ability to understand principles of permanents

Theoretical background of permanents must be examined in

connection with practice.

-Ability to understand shape of head

Location in spherecal shaped head must be exactly understood to

figure out volume and shape.

-Blocking and sectioning

Winding direction in horizontal, vertical, diagonal, triangular and

rectangular shapes must be set according to blocking and sectioning.

-Ability to apply reducing agent (liquid 1)

Even application on hair and scalp protection will be evaluated.

-Ability to select rod according to hair length

Volume formation depending on strand angle must be checked.

-Ability to style according to shape of face

Styling must be done in accordance with individual shape of face, hair

or general external look.

Page 6: Permanent-Wave Practices€¦ · Permanent wave means a wave that is permanent or lasts for a long time and is done with physical and chemical means on the hair Principles of permanent

6

-Ability to understand the work’s characteritics, techniques and length.

Change in wave shape according to hair’s length and thickeness of

rod must be examined.

Context of and

specific resources for

assessment

In assessment, the usage of the following must be checked

Check for correct usage of tools selected in assessment guide.

Check for compliance with permanent requirements.

Check for conformity to topic.

Check for the work’s characteristics, techniques and correctness of

length.

Method of assessment

In assessing practical skills and knowledge various assessment

methods must be applied. Some example of applicable methods is as

follows:

In lectures student’s attitude such as sincerity and enthusiasm

will be examined during practice process and individuals will

be watched during basic cut practice procedure.

- Does the student work sincerely and with good attitude

during the project?

- Does the student accept feedback and fix or supplement as

necessary?

- Are the necessary materials prepared accordingly?

Interim checks will be done before the final design is created.

- During Q&A appropriate criticism will be given and fixes and

supplements will be checked.

- Through peer review with other people students will be able

to know their objective level.

Guidance information

for assessment

Assesser must plan an integrated assessment activity that assesses this

unit along with other units combining contents related to industry,

field and duty.

Application of expertise in practice

Proposal of efficient and creative design in hair design

Range Statement This section contains information relating to performance and devices. This can affect the work

environment as well as performance. This can be included in education and assessment as

necessary criteria (availability of device and needs of local society and businesses).

Principles of permanents.

1. Physical effects

-Application of liquid 1

-Change in wave due to physical force on rod during winding

- Application of liquid 1

2. Chemical effects
