Counselors have completed meeting with 9th grade students to discuss
course selections for next year. 9th graders and parents can now view

Harwood Junior High is pleased to announce that it has been named a 2016 Honor Roll school by the
Educational Results Partnership (ERP) and the Institute for Productivity in Education (IPE), making it the
second consecutive year that Harwood has received this prestigious honor. This award recognizes
higher performing, higher poverty schools that are distinguished for their academic achievement and
for closing achievement gaps among students.
Harwood joins LD Bell High School and Bedford Junior High as the three HEB-ISD schools to achieve
this honor and is the only HEB-ISD school that was recognized with this distinction for two consecutive
years. Only 21 out of 512 schools in Tarrant County were named Texas Honor Roll schools. As an
Honor Roll Star School, Harwood is among a select group of high-poverty, high-performing,
achievement-gap-closing schools who are consistently outperforming their peers, so-called Look-Alike
Schools who have similar percentages of specific demographic groups.
Through national research, the ERP has identified a common set of success factors in higher performing
Honor Roll schools. These include clear, specific learning objectives aligned to college and career
readiness, along with evidence-based instructional practices; establishing system-wide mission of
college and career readiness for all students; investing in human capital; maintaining data and
assessment systems to monitor school and student performance; and deploying resources and
guidance to support schools’ efforts to prepare all students for college and career. Harwood is very
proud to have met and exceeded all of these benchmarks for recognition.

Before the lesson, students made finger foldables and glued them in their science
journals. The students then participated in a gallery walk, writing a vocabulary word on the front of the foldable and the definition behind it. The foldable then served as a great
learning tool for studying body
systems vocabulary. Students enjoyed getting to walk around under our gorgeous Texas sky while learning
their science vocabulary!

Congratulations are in order to two former Harwood students. Patrick Norman won the $500 Megan Newstrom scholarship, and Carson Thye won the $500 Jay Hendrickson scholarship. Both scholarships will be given to the Trinity seniors at Harwood’s awards ceremony, and they will be honored once again at Trinity’s awards ceremony. Congratulations to both students and best of luck to them as they start college. Thank you to Rhonda Powell for organizing all of the applications!
Please don’t forget that we have a campus shutdown on May 3rd and 4th for STAAR and EOC testing. No visitors will be allowed on campus either day.
The district VIPS luncheon will be held on May 3rd at 11:30 a.m. If you logged one or more hours before March 31st, you should have received an invitation to the VIPS Luncheon. Please RSVP as soon as possible if you are able to attend.
Teacher Appreciation week is coming up next week. We will be holding a luncheon for Harwood teachers and staff on May 5th. If you would like to be added to the distribution list to help with donations, please contact Marsha Greeley.
Our 9th graders will also be celebrating with the annual yearbook signing party on May 5th from 6:00-8:00 p.m. This year, the party will be a banquet. 9th graders can purchase tickets to the event for $5.00 and a sit-down Italian dinner will be served. It’s a fun night where the students can dress up and enjoy the company of their friends as they finish the Harwood chapter of their school career. If you are a 9th grade parent interested in chaperoning during the yearbook signing event, please contact Marsha Greeley so she can add you to her distribution list. Sign-ups will be emailed soon.
