Most patients today prefer a partnership with their physicians and want to share responsibility for their care. Meeting these new patient needs isn't time consuming, but it does require adjusting the communication skills you already have. Listen empathetically, have a keen understanding of nonverbal behaviors and always try to give well-reasoned explanations.
