Spring 08 1 PERSPECTIVE Vol. 16, No. 2 Spring 2008 billets. We gave our last performance at First United Mennonite Church and were warmly received. Members of the church prepared a traditional Colombian meal, which definitely hit the spot. With food in our bellies, we loaded our instruments and luggage for the last time, and departed for home. Five of Westgate’s music groups performed on tour: the Vocal Jazz, Concert Choir, Concert Band, Jazz Band and Brass Quintet. Mr. Brownlee did a great job of having the audience participate. At every concert, he asked a volunteer to come up and conduct the Concert Band in playing a song called “Instant Concert.” (Christine Peters) We were physically challenged on a number of hikes in the mountains. We rode a water-bus from Pender Island to Salt Spring Island, which was a new experience for most of us. (Megan Friesen) The audience seemed to really enjoy all of the groups that performed on tour. They also loved when Vocal Jazz sang the song “Annie Waits” by Ben Folds. Jake Enns sang the solo in that song and probably made every girl in those schools melt. (Tayler Fehr). O n April 19th, 2008, 78 students and four courageous staff members began a 26-hour bus ride to British Columbia. Beginning with a balmy 22 degrees, students were less than impressed that by Medicine Hat we were delayed because of a full-fledged blizzard. Eventually, we arrived in Abbotsford, where we successfully completed our first performance. Abbotsford also included a hike where most students realized their physical condition wasn’t as stellar as they had presumed. Changing pace, we took a ferry to Pender Island, a quiet town where we made up seven percent of the population. Most importantly, Mr. Brownlee’s mother lives there and got to witness him conduct and did some conducting herself. We then made a day trip to Salt Spring Island and enjoyed the crafty stores and fresh ocean air. Next we took a ferry to Victoria and spent the day sightseeing, eating and overall recuperating. Vancouver added a more shopping-oriented aspect to the trip, but ended with some traditional Mennonite MUSIC TOUR While many Senior High students were away on tour, the remaining students had an opportunity to participate in a wide variety of classes, from East Indian cooking to used book tours. Events included a city bike tour, led by Mr. Wiebe and Mr. Durksen; a salsa dance class, arranged by Mrs Dyck; and a complete sausage-making experience, from the slaughtering, butchering and finally the smoking of the sausages, hosted by Mr. Baerg. BAND NOTES(HEE HEE)

The instrumental side of Westgate’smusic program has had a most activetime since returning from the long-

past Christmas Break!

In early January, two of the school’s smallensembles, the Grade 7 Clarinet Trio, andthe Senior Brass Quintet, played at theManitoba Band Association’s Solo andEnsemble Festival. Both groups preparedchallenging pieces, and were rewardedwith positive and constructiveadjudications. Both groups earned goldmedals for “Outstanding Performance”!Congratulations to Jo Lee, Louis Martinand Debora Stasolla in the trio, and JakeEnns, Nicole Froese, Rebekah Klassen-Wiebe, Julian Kroeker and Jason Bergenof the Quintet. The Quintet went on toplay for the Winnipeg SymphonyOrchestra’s Musicians in the Making, performing at the Concert Hall. Twoladies from Newfoundland in theaudience particularly enjoyed our twoEast Coast folk arrangements!

In early February, both the Grade 9 Bandand the Senior Concert Band playedparticularly well at the OptimistInternational Band Festival. Commentsfrom the international adjudicatorsincluded: “Fantastic stage presence…youhave an awesome band sound!” and

“Excellent technical development anddiscipline.” The Grade 9 Band wasawarded the elusive plaque for “SuperiorPerformance 2008” and the Senior Bandwas invited to perform at the Nationallevel for Musicfest Canada. Well done, all!

Not to be outdone by their oldercolleagues, the grade 7 and 8 bands wentout to perform at the MBA Level 1 BandFestival held in mid-April. Both groupsseemed to wow their respectiveadjudicators, prompting one to write“You guys play insanely well!” (I’m notmaking this up!) I was particularly proudof the professional manner exhibited byall of our students both on and off thestage.

Further congratulations must go out tothe Westgate students who auditioned forthe Manitoba Provincial Honour Bands. Each prepared challenging solorepertoire and recorded a CD which was

submitted to a panel of adjudicators whochose these students from hundredsacross the province. Well done Erin, Elisand Kate Schroeder, Nathalie Daudet,Jeremy and Justin Wiebe, Merridy Peters,Kathryn Kroeker, Marie Bergen andBrendan Wiebe. ■ Ross Brownlee,Director of Bands

W I N T E R C A M P I N GOn February 7 and 8, a group of 31 bravestudents and five teachers ventured outinto the wilderness on Ingolf Lake for anovernight winter camping experience. Wewere blessed with exceptionally warmweather amidst a cold winter season. Itwas a beautiful warm sunny day as wedragged our gear across the lake and upa ridge, behind Mr. Hummelt’s cottage toour final destination. It was a survivalexperience as the day was spentpreparing ourselves for the one night’sstay. Snow needed to be piled high assoon as we got there to ensure the

quinzees would stand strong when theywould be hollowed out. Wood was hauledto make our fires for water and cooking.Pine boughs were gathered to make ourbeds soft and insulate us from the cold. Itwas a team effort to achieve all thatneeded to be done to ensure a comfortablenight in our quinzees, and the camperscompleted these tasks with enthusiasmand excitement. The joy, energy andexcitement of the day’s events continuedas we were closed into our “snow tents”for the night. What an experience it wasto sleep in a snow house! It was a greattwo days spent with excited campers inGod’s beautiful creation. ■

The 40 days leading up to Easter were atime for our community to reflect onwhat Jesus’ death and resurrection

mean. Students were encouraged to givesomething up or perhaps even more so toadd something to their lives that mightfacilitate drawing them closer to God. Theoverall theme this year was an invitationto join the Peaceful Revolution as presentedby Mennonite Central Committee.

The time of Lent ended with a fast. Over80 people from the school community

A LENTENJOURNEY

took time to fast and be mindfulof the need for peace in ourworld. During the 29 hourswithout food, students wereinvited to replace their desiresfor food with a hunger andthirst for righteousness. Thefirst evening, we were guided by

Esther Epp-Tiessen through prayerstations at Home Street MennoniteChurch. Learning about how peaceintersects with environmental issues, war, hunger, injustice and consumerismchallenged students to share theirpassion and be a part of overcoming ofviolence in many forms. The finalworkshops involved learning some basicconflict resolution skills and serving inthe name of Christ at MCC. Our organic, meatless feast was deliciously andgraciously prepared by parent volunteersLorraine Rempel and Karen Fuhr. Sir Gawain and the Green KnightFair knights and gentle ladies weregathered to hear the story of Sir Gawainand the Green Knight. Although SirGawain was forced to accept the GreenKnight’s challenge, he performed his dutydespite obstacles and challenges. Thecast of this play did the same. As a firsttime director, I was amazed at the numberof students and staff participating —frommake-up to sets, lights and costumes, tothe actors. A special thank you to AndrewWerner for supplying us with handmadechain mail to lend authenticity to ourperformance. Congratulations to the crewand cast for a story well told! Mother Goose Has Flown the CoopMother Goose had gone missing andthings were not going well on Fairy TaleIsland. And so detectives Hickory (AdamFuhr) and Dickory (Justin Braun-Janzen)were called in to set things right. MotherGoose Has Flown the Coop was a fun, fairy tale-filled whodunit. ONE-ACT PLAYS

Andrew Werner (pictured second from theleft with fellow actors) recently lent his chainmail making abilities to the costume crew of“Sir Gawain and the Green Knight.” Andrew,a grade 9 student at Westgate, had alwaysbeen interested in Medieval Warfare but itwas not until he was in grade 7 that hestarted creating it. He approached the staffwith the idea of lending his chain mailcreations to the One Act Plays and theteachers were more than happy to accept.Thank you, Andrew.

worried about the sky falling, to theintimidating Fairy Godmother (KerensaPeters), this play went through most ofthe fairy tales and nursery rhymes manyof us learned as children. Happily, the bigmystery of Mother Goose’s disappearanceand other, smaller mysteries (why didLittle Bo Peep lose her sheep) werewrapped up in a simple solution by thegood detectives. Doug Durksen

Oh No! I Shrunk the Substitute!Having a substitute can be an adventureinto the unknown…especially if yoursubstitute-solving experiment goesterribly wrong— just ask JacquelynKlassen and Michaela Publicover. Theplay really left me wondering …wouldthese two (or any of the others) really bethis concerned about the shrinking of ateacher?? I imagine a conversationbetween students would sound somethingmore like “who should we shrink next?”

All kidding aside, One-Act Plays arealways a highlight. The students workedvery hard in a short amount of time andnever disappointed. Nancy Runke ■

SENIOR DRAMA: “You Can’t Take It With You”

“Well sir, you should’ve been there. That’s all I can say, you should’ve beenthere”. This 1930s comedy was definitelyone not to be missed. It all began with 16enthusiastic students who simply cameinto the play with a passion for the stageand a love for the arts. However, this highenergy quickly progressed into a journeyof hard work and determination thateventually molded the play into a livelysuccess.

Over the course of a seemingly short sixweeks, more than 1,000 lines werememorized and free evenings became ararity. In order to achieve the comediceffect that captivated the audience threetimes over, the talent and wisdom of ourdirector, Mr. Dyck, was essential.Throughout our experience, nothingmade us happier than to hear thelaughter of our audience. Thank you forsharing this performance with us. ■
