PERTON GARDENING CLUB MARCH IN THE GARDEN

The weather should be warming up and everything in the garden is coming alive. Easter is upon us and British summer time starts at the end of the month, which all makes a busy time ahead for gardeners. While we are still enjoying the spring flowering bulbs it is now time to think about planting summer flowering varieties such as alliums, crocosmia and gladioli. Look out for them in the garden centre and check that they are firm and do not have any sign of mould, follow the instructions for planting details. Prune and fee roses and tie in all climbing roses. Cut back coloured stemmed shrubs such as willow or dogwood and any growth left on perennials for winter interest and prune buddleia. Protect tender plants such as Japanese Acers and Pieris if frost is forecast as tender new leaves can be burnt. Sow seeds in the greenhouse or indoors and take cuttings from your over wintered dahilia tubers. Pot on plug plants and any seedlings that are large enough, always handling them by the leaves and never the stems.Prepare lawns for mowing by raking to remove dead grass and moss, leave mower blades on their highest setting for the first cut.

Words of Wisdom from Rev Julia Cody

“ One of the real joys of my job is visiting our schools. I love the fact that many of the youngsters in the village know my name, and when I go shopping, I get lots of friendly greetings!

I’m typing these thoughts on 14th February, and earlier this week I took assemblies in both Perton and Sandown First Schools. We were thinking about Valentine’s, Pancakes and Easter - quite a lot in one assembly! But as we tried to get to the heart of these celebrations, and explored them together, we came up with a profound idea... If Valentine’s Day, at its heart (pardon the pun!), is about taking time, in words and deeds, to show someone we love them... then Easter is God’s Valentine’s Day.The Bible says,“God loved the people of this world so much that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who has faith in him will have eternal life and never really die”. This is the heart of our Easter celebrations. So as you enjoy egg hunts and chocolate, try and remember the simple yet profound truth which the children and I explored... that Easter is God’s Valentine’s Day - God taking time to show us, through Jesus’ death and resurrection, that he loves us so very much. Happy Easter!p.s. If you’d like to explore Easter further, check our website for details of what’s going on, or see the Easter card which will be arriving on your door mat!

A Word From Your MPThe last month has been extremely busy, following my debate on the promotion of manufacturing in the West Midlands. This is an issue that has always been at the very forefront of my mind since getting elected, not only because I worked in the manufacturing sector myself before entering parliament, but also because it plays such an important role in South Staffordshire. In 2011, there were 3,600 employees in the manufacturing industry in South Staffordshire. This accounted for 15.7 percent of all employees in the area.

While manufacturing is incredible important to the economy of the local area, we cannot take it for granted that it will continue to thrive and, indeed, over the past 15 years, we have seen a gradual decline in the sector. I was particularly happy to see South Staffordshire somewhat bucking that trend, with the investment announced by Jaguar Land Rover to build their new engine factory in my constituency. Since the debate, I have continued to work to get further manufacturing investment and it is my hope that, in the coming months, we are going to be able to announce yet more good news, resulting in well over a hundred million pounds worth of extra investment coming into South Staffordshire.

On a further positive note, I remember talking in an earlier copy of the Perton Pages of the frustration I often feel when trying to get the authorities to adopt a more sensible approach. I made this particular comment in reference to my work to see the removal of the no left turn ban at the Jenny Walkers Lane traffic lights. While I am afraid to report that I have not been able to secure a permanent removal, I am pleased that some common sense has prevailed and we were able to get a temporary lifting of the no left turn while the Nancherrow Tough Guy event was taking place. Please rest assured that I will continue to do all I can do to see a permanent removal of this ridiculous ban.

If there are any issues that you would like to raise with me personally, please don't hesitate to get in touch. I look forward to welcoming any of you to my new office, should you wish to visit. To contact me call 01902 701479 or 0207 219 7150

Wild About Perton in MarchIt will soon be officially Spring again but I think it actually begins as the days begin to lengthen in early January; it’s certainly when our birds begin to look their best again. By March the birds that dropped into Perton over the winter like the Goosander seen on the Lower Lake in February are long gone. Our resident birds have paired up with nest building beginning in earnest, including the buzzards that will have touched talons high in the sky to confirm their bond. Each year we put out our cat’s brushed hair in the garden and it is many a blue tit that begins its early life in the warm embrace of our ginger tom’s fur. In Bluebell Walk the bluebells produce their dark green leaves early, to gather the energy they need from sunlight before the oak and ash trees come into leaf and shade out the light. This is also a good time of year to see birds in Bluebell Walk and particularly those who don’t visit our gardens regularly. Look out for Blackcap in our shady woodlands and tree lined public footpaths, with its hallmark black cap male and red brown cap female. Many of these migrating birds now over winter in Perton but in the spring their ‘teck, teck, teck’ song rings out. During March bird song seems to increase daily building towards the crescendo of the Dawn Chorus in April and May, but more of that next month.Wild About Perton leads a wildlife walk every first Saturday of the month starting from Perton Library. Some walks may involve muddy paths, fields, ditches or stiles etc. Robust footwear and outdoor clothing suitable for the time of year and activity are strongly recommended.

Tips from Your Local PGA ProAt Perton Park Golf Club

Spring is just around the corner and it’s less than 6 weeks to the Masters. Now is the time to sign up for my “6 Week Game Changer Program.” Give me a call or email for more details. If you followed last months tip or are

already on the program you should be ahead of the game already. If you have only just got your clubs out after winter you are probably feeling really rusty and even a little nervous standing on the first tee. Here are a couple of tips to get you back into the swing of things.Your best set up key under pressure- the tendency is to freeze over the ball and put a death grip on the club. To combat this, keep some motion in your fingers and feet. Waggle the club back and forth. If you lock up, your nerves will get you.Try turning your left shoulder behind the ball. Nerves typically make the backswing fast and short. It's tough to recover from a snatchy move like that. If you're feeling tense (like on the first tee or a tough driving hole) focus on making a full, rhythmic motion to the top. The best thought, even if you don't have the flexibility to do it, is to turn your left (for right handers) shoulder behind the ball. You'll load into your right side so you can shift forward coming down. Remember, the ball's not going anywhere, so take your time swinging back.Try maintaining your arm speed to the finish - If you're feeling totally lost on the tee; you need a swing key that combats a lot of potential problems. Try keeping your arms swinging at a constant speed through the ball and all the way to the finish. Many golfers swing to the ball and stop; they "throw" the club at the ball. This can lead to misses of all kinds, so picking the proper correction can be confusing. If you keep up your arm speed, you'll create good rhythm and flow through impact. You might be amazed at how things fall into place. Making an aggressive pass through the ball is always better than trying to steer it down the fairway. Remember, you're making a golf swing, so keep those arms swinging. Good luck and get out playing and practising, we have a great offer at Perton Golf Driving Range Happy Hour 5pm – 6pm Weekdays only.
