one of my favorite poems is by an unknown author (the best ones often are) and the poem is simply called

Don’t Quit. there is a line in that poem that has become a sort of mantra in my life and it goes, “Life is queer with its twists and turns, as every one of us sometimes learns.” that line pops into my head every time something completely unexpected happens. i can not tell you how many times that line has popped into my mind during the course of working on Pet Junction, from start to finish.

about 13 years ago Jackie and i started our publishing careers and nine years ago we published a magazine called the Pet Planet magazine. as business progresses, things change. there were some other avenues of publishing we wanted to explore so it seemed the best way to do that was to find Pet Planet a “new family” so to speak. And though we threw ourselves into our new project, our hearts still belonged to South Florida’s pet community.

Five years ago, i never thought i would be writing this note for a new pet publication, published by allen-Branca media Company, inc. but, life is queer with its twists and turns.

i can’t tell you how excited all of us here at allen-Branca media Company, inc are to bring this pet resource guide to our incredible South Florida pet community! it has been a humbling experience to be welcomed back with open arms by so many of our old friends. We appreciate your kindness and warmth more than you will ever know. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for helping us bring this much needed resource guide to our community’s pet people. Your support will save lives, of that i have no doubt.

So, what is Pet Junction? Pet Junction is so much more than a directory! Inside you will find all kinds of great information that will help to enhance your pets life. Sharing our lives with companion animals ourselves, we know how important information is and we know how important it is to have it right at your fingertips.

Inside you will find a vast array of pet related businesses eager to serve you, as well as “easy to follow” categorical listings. in each listing, you will find each businesses name, address, phone number, email, website urL, and the page number their ad appears on.

aside from business listings and advertisements (which paid for the publication, so please support the advertisers), you’ll find; a fairly large list of pet friendly apartments, pet friendly restaurants and pet rescue groups. You’ll also find a series of pet related articles with great information on how to better care for your pets. one article we are particularly proud to present in this issue is Ending the Euthanasia Cycle. We firmly believe that it can be done and we sincerely hope after reading this information you will too.

We have also included a large selection of fun pet facts, quotes, and jokes to keep you laughing all the way through the resource guide. make sure you look for those throughout the book!

our goal for Pet Junction is to be your one stop shop for everything pets in South Florida. it never ceases to amaze me how many people approach me when i am out and

about with my 12 year old umbrella Cockatoo who begin with, “i used to have a (insert type of parrot here) but i had to get rid of it because (insert excuse here).” i’ve heard every excuse in the book of why a person has had to “get rid of” their parrot as if the parrot were some throw away object that didn’t matter much. every time some stranger feels the need to fill me in on their gross irresponsibility, i get a pit the size of texas in the bottom of my stomach. they can give me any excuse they like but i know the truth. the truth is, they simply didn’t know what they were getting into and it was easier to let someone else deal with their “problem.”

So now the truth. Parrot ownership is hard. Parrots are loud, messy, moody, and at times unpredictable. they need special toys, special care, and a lot of interaction. not to mention the fact that they live extremely long lives! What’s more, most people do not have any clue what they are taking on BeFore they take it on. once they get into the throws of parrot ownership they think, “uh oh, what did i do?” the result? much like what we have seen happen with dogs and cats, we are now seeing with parrots. a lot of parrots, but few homes. or we see parrots in their 20s who have been shuffled around from home to home most of it’s life because each time the new owner has no idea what they have gotten themselves into, or even how to handle or care for a parrot.

if you’re thinking of adding a companion parrot to your household, here are some things to think about BeFore you bring it home.

Do you have the time to spend with your new companion?

Companion Parrot Ownership:

WHAT yOu

NEED TO KNOWBy: Shelly allen

Above: African Grey Parrot

Page 17: Pet Junction Sept 2011

SePt-marCh 2012 17

Parrots are flock animals, YOU are their flock. do you have the time that a companion parrot both needs and deserves?

Do have the space to give it proper caging?

Parrots require as much space as you can give them. as big a cage as you can house, that’s the size house they need.

Do you have the disposable income to buy them toys and proper food?

toys can be expensive, but they are essential for the mental and physical well being of your companion parrot. they also need essential nutrients found in specialized parrot food mixes, while food isn’t a make or break expense it is certainly something to add to the equation.

Do you have a plan for the parrot in the event your companionship does not work out?

Simply surrendering the parrot to your local bird outlet is neither fair to the parrot or for that matter, very responsible behavior on your part! hey, we’ve all had situations that just don’t work out, but deal with them like an adult and take responsibility for the situation. Find the bird a good home. i received my umbrella Cockatoo, Picasso, from a family that just couldn’t give him the attention he deserved. i did my research, i talked to dedicated parrot owners who gave me all the information i am giving to you right now. i knew what i was getting into and i did it with eyes wide open. that was 10 years ago and me and Picasso are still going strong. Good forever homes do exist, be responsible and find one.

Does your personality match the

temperament of the parrot your thinking about acquiring?

different breeds have different temperaments. Cockatoos love to be petted and scratched and loved all up. We match. amazons like to be talked to but do not particularly like to be touched. african Greys are very intelligent, they are estimated to have the intelligence of a five year old child. They can reason out that if they fall they could get hurt, they tend to be a bit neurotic, does that fit your personality?

the bottom line is this. i am in no way telling you not to share your life with a parrot. Parrot companionship has been one of the most enjoyable relationships of my life. Parrots are just such little characters, and they are so funny, and lovable, and cute. if you decide parrot ownership iS for you, don’t let a husband, a wife, girlfriend or boyfriend come between you and your parrot! Give it the forever home it deserves and you will have a best friend for life.

Domesticated for more than 10,000 years, the dog was one of the first animals domesticated by humans.

Your older dog has the same capacity to learn new training and behavior as he did when he was a puppy… and having been through it all once before sometimes helps make it even easier.

Cats’ bodies are extremely flexible; the cat skeleton contains more than 230 bones (a human has about 206), and

the pelvis and shoulders loosely attach to the spine. This adds to their flexibil-ity and allows them to fit through very

small spaces.

Cats are obligate carnivores. This means they must eat meat. So even if you’re a vegetarian, you need to come

to grips with the fact that your cat can’t be. He will get very sick and die

without meat in his diet.

Puttin’ On The DogEvery pet needs a little love!

Cats step with both left legs, then both right legs when they walk or run. The only other animals to do this are the

giraffe and the camel.

Cats have better memories than dogs. Tests conducted by the

University of Michigan concluded that while a dog’s memory lasts no more than 5 minutes, a cat’s can last as

long as 16 hours -exceeding even that of

monkeys and orangutans.

An estimated one million dogs are named as beneficiaries in people’s wills. Many people get so attached to their dog that they ensure they are cared for appropriately once

they have departed from this life.

In Australia, England, and the U.S., MAx wins as the most popular

name for pooches. Other popular dog names in the U.S. are Jake,

Buddy, Maggie, Molly, and Bear.

Cats are affectionate pets, but they are also instinctual predators. Way before

they became domesticated pets, cats were hunters who had to stalk game, catch their food, scale trees, run, and hide. For all those reasons, they were gifted with sharp claws so they would be able to look after themselves, hunting, climbing and surviving. to keep their claws in effective order, they scratch. the scratching not only cleanses their claws and keeps them sharp, it also helps them mark their territory, stretch out, and workout their extremities. Scratching posts help them do just that.

there is no way you, or anyone else, can halt a cat from scratching. they can’t help it as it is in their nature to do so. the best thing to do is to stop fighting with your cat and in turn find something that can make it leave the furniture and fabric alone. that’s the purpose of scratching posts.

declawing a cat is never an option. Cat claws are NOT like human finger nails that you can simply trim with no adverse results. Declawing cats implies having the final joints of the claws severed. it’s effectively an amputation and will leave your cat maimed for life. declawing also messes with a cat’s natural stability as you would have effectually abbreviated their claws.

Scratching posts are the best option for cat owners. they provide cats with an outlet to practice their instinctual scratching behavior. Best of all, you will be able to sleep soundly without stressing that you may find your furniture all shredded to

pieces when you return from work or awaken from a nap.

Additional Alternatives Aside From Scratching Posts

Scratching posts are an excellent way to keep your cat active and in great physical condition. however, it is also necessary to keep your special furry friend busy and well-exercised so that it will not even think of scratching your slacks, table legs or upholstery.

in addition to scratching posts, there are also cat toys that can help keep your pet busy. Cat trees are also great to use apart from cat scratching posts. Cat trees provide the cat all the scratching adventures they could ever want while permitting them to climb and perch.

there’s also catnip stuffed toys that can offer a cat a great time. You will find catnip-stuffed enormous mice, or tiny balls which you can throw to encourage your cat to play. these cat toys will allow you to share some fantastic playful moments with your exceptional furry friend. remember that a well-exercised... cat is a good cat.

Dogs aren’t color blind; they can see shades

of blue, yellow, green and gray.the color red registers on a grayscale

in a dog’s vision.

Cats’ eyes are distinctive in that they have three

eyelids and the eye is so designed that it makes it easier for cats to see in low lights. it is untrue that they can see in total

darkness.

Do birDs see color ?

Where we have 3 different cone types that make us sensitive to the spectrum of colors we see, there is evidence that at least some species of birds have a

fourth cone type that appears responsive to wavelengths out around ultraviolet. We don’t have that, so we don’t see ultraviolet light.

Some people think that feathers reflect ultraviolet light in such a way that parrots can tell, for example, males from females where we cannot. it could be that females’ feathers have a whole different ultraviolet reflectance than males’ feathers (within a given species) so the birds have no trouble telling boy from girl in species where we can’t see a clear difference.

beauty is in the “eye”of the beholDer.

ENDING THE EuTHANASIA CyCLE

“the greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.”

as americans, we adore our companion animals. We spend our weekends at local

dog parks, buy expensive organic pet food, and rush them to the vet at the first sign of trouble. We spend between $50 and $60 billion on them annually, and often put their needs before ours. But even as we dote on our furry family members, three to four million lost or homeless pets are being killed each year in our nation’s shelters.

it’s commonly believed that the killing of pets in animal shelters is inevitable for two reasons: “there aren’t enough homes” and “there isn’t enough money.” however, both of these excuses are inherently false – and animal lovers across the country are beginning to realize the truth, and demand that the killing stop. From this outrage, the no Kill movement has evolved.

Pet overpopulation is nothing more than a persistent myth. according to a study by the Humane Society of the US, 17 million american families are looking for new pets each year, and can be convinced to adopt from a shelter. only a small percentage of these people need to adopt in order to save the lives of all those being killed. additionally, it’s been demonstrated time and time again that a shelter’s budget is not related to its rate of lifesaving.

the no Kill movement has its own proven lifesaving program called the no Kill equation – a set of 11 proven, cost-effective steps for shelter leadership to implement. it is the only formula that has created no Kill conditions at open-admission animal shelters. Communities as diverse as Reno, Nevada; Ithaca, NY; Charlottesville, VA; Shelby County, KY and

austin, tX have all achieved 90%+ save rates for their animals. Compare that to the alternative: the national average is a 50% kill rate. in miami-dade County, 61% of the animals are killed. But that doesn’t have to be the case.

often, the no Kill equation can be implemented at, or even below, a community’s current budget. When a shelter makes the choice to adopt a no Kill philosophy, public support is always overwhelming, and many of the costs are often transferred to that public – versus government funding.

the steps of the no Kill equation are as follows:

I. Feral Cat TNR Program

trap neuter release (tnr) programs are the only proven effective methods of reducing a feral cat population, and no Kill communities across the country have embraced these tactics as a method of drastically reducing shelter intake and saving lives.

II. High Volume, Low-Cost Spay/Neuter

Low or no-cost, high volume spay/neuter programs are a key component to reducing shelter intake, and become especially effective over time.

III. Rescue Groups

rescue groups are an invaluable element of the nKe. any transfer of an animal to a rescue group reduces taxpayer cost for vet care and boarding (or euthanasia), in addition

NO KILL NATION

Page 40: Pet Junction Sept 2011

40 Pet JunCtion

to freeing up a kennel for another animal.

IV. Foster Care

Foster care is an irreplaceable way to drastically expand shelter capacity. Volunteer foster parents provide boarding, food and care for animals, and serve as key advocates for the shelter’s mission. these programs also save the lives of neonatal kittens and other animals who cannot survive in a shelter.

V. Comprehensive Pet Adoptions

You Can adopt your way out of killing, but it takes hard work and innovation. there are more than enough homes for our nation’s homeless pets, but shelters must compete with outside sources of animals - they must offer promotions, adoption specials and implement effective marketing programs to get pets out the door.

VI. Pet Retention

many of the reasons people surrender their animals are preventable, but shelters must work with the public to help them retain their animals. through offering advice and assistance to those in need, shelters can reduce intake and keep families together.

VII. Medical and Behavior Rehabilitation

a key part of any shelter’s responsibility is to insure the health & well-being of its inhabitants. animals must be treated for medical conditions and rehabilitated for behavioral issues. this step includes theimplementation of proper cleaning, vaccination, evaluation and other protocols.

VIII. Public Relations/Community Involvement

Community support is key to no Kill success. By increasing public exposure for the shelter, the community will get involved, which means more donations, more volunteers, more adoptions and more lifesaving success.

Ix. Volunteers

no Kill efforts cannot succeed without volunteers. they expand the shelter’s operational efforts without necessitating additional expense.

x. Proactive Redemptions

in Washoe County, nevada, almost 65% of intake are returned to their owners, demonstrating the high percentage of animals that need only be redeemed. actively working towards rto efforts can drastically reduce shelter intake and kill rates.

xI. A Compassionate Director

the number one most important factor in reaching a no Kill community is effective leadership. unless a shelter’s leader is progressive, compassionate and hard-working, other efforts are likely to fail. the leader dictates the policies & procedures of the organization, and if a leader makes a decision to stop the killing - it will stop.

our path is clear. Communities across the country have paved the way for the rest to follow. all we need do as animal lovers is demand change, and we can save the three to four million animals dying needlessly each year.

1. CLEAN uP

Man made debris literally kills - plastic objects like fishing line, hooks, floats, pens, lighters, bottle caps and toothbrushes. Animals mistake them for food or become entangled by them.

2. uSE TRASH RECEPTACLES

Garbage beside the road can attract wildlife in search of food to dangerous roads and highways.

3. ASSESS CONDITION

If you find an animal: Is it visibly harmed? Bleeding? unable to walk or fly? If so contact your local wildlife help center.

4. LEAVE WILDLIFE ALONE

if you fear that a nest or burrow has been abandoned, stay back, observe, and be patient. they may return. Keep children, dogs, and cats away.

5. CAREFuLLy CONTAIN

animals who do need to be rescued should be placed in a dark, quiet area. do not attempt to feed them. then contact your local wildlife help center. But be mindful of your safety. Some animals and birds should only be handled by professionals.

make sure you have a plan in place to guarantee the lifetime care for Your pets.

Components of a lifetime care plan:

STEP 1: Identify Caregivers.

identify people who could step in to take short term care of your pets in the hours, days, or weeks after an emergency, or who would adopt your pets should you become incapacitated or pass away. if you cannot find friends, relatives or neighbors to care for your pets, your veterinarian, local pet sitters and animal rescue groups may be able to help you locate potential caregivers.

STEP 2: Prepare written instructions outlining how your pets should be

cared for.

how do you want your pets to live - in another house or in a sanctuary? What kind of special care do your pets require? do you want your pets to stay together? to make sure that your wishes are followed, your instructions must be written down and someone must know where to find them.

STEP 3: Set up a fund specifically for the care of your pets.

You currently pay for food, shelter, supplies, and medical care for your pets. those expenses won’t stop, even if you aren’t around to pay them. You may want to set aside funds for temporary or foster care, transportation to a new home and the ongoing care of your pets.

STEP 4: Select a plan that’s best for yOuR pets.

An estimated 500,000 companion animals are relinquished and

euthanized in shelters each year simply because their owners pass away or

become too ill to care for them.

ALL ABOuT GREyHOuNDS

Greyhounds are one of the oldest breeds of dogs – their first signs were

discovered in temple drawings dating back to 6000BC in what is now turkey. they were worshipped in ancient egypt and in medieval europe with only people of nobility allowed to own them.

they arrived in the united States with immigrants from the British isles to help control the over population of crop destroying jack rabbits. unfortunately, in the early 1900’s greyhound racing was born in the united States, thus changing the fate of greyhounds worldwide.

Greyhounds are among the most gentle of breeds, eager to please and well- behaved. they form a very strong bond with their families. raised in a kennel environment, they are very polite and well disciplined. they get along with other dogs and most of them even get along with cats. they come in a variety of colors with no two alike in coloring, size and personality. When retired from the racing circuit, their average age is between two and five years old.

Greyhounds do not require a lot of exercise and most are content with a romp in the fenced yard or regular walks. however,

“I think we are drawn to dogs because they are the uninhibited creatures we might be if we weren’t certain we knew better.”

-George Bird Evans

they Cannot be off leash without being in a fenced-in area.

Greyhounds belong to the sight hound canine group. they can see clearly for almost a half mile and any motion can trigger their curiosity to explore. their coat is very soft, thin and delicate and their shedding is very minimal. Greyhounds are required to live indoors for they cannot tolerate extreme temperatures, especially heat. Greyhounds love soft beds, couches and soft squeaky toys regardless of their age.

these gentle dogs are very sensitive to your voice. they prefer gentle talking and soft or classical music. once used to the new home routine, they are very laid back. they enjoy long “siestas” and quiet times. they try to be as close to you as

possible, following you around the house, especially at the very beginning of being adopted. they seldom bark and if they do it is normally out of excitement. Greyhounds are very unique; they are devoted to you and love you unconditionally and they are in a way very thankful for their new life full of love and care.

Please consider saving a precious life. You will not regret it when you open your heart to a greyhound, you will be rewarded many times over. if you are interested in more information about Greyhounds or adopting a greyhound, please call hollydogs Greyhound Adoption, a non-profit organization created in 1995 to rescue, shelter and adopt retired racing greyhounds that otherwise would be destroyed. 954 - 925 - 7758 or visit our website, www.hollydogs.org.

ExCERPT FROM A CAT’S DIARy: DAY 774 - I am convinced the other captives are flunkies and maybe

snitches. the dog is routinely released and seems more than happy to return. he is obviously a half-wit. the Bird on the other hand has got to be an informant. he has mastered their frightful tongue (something akin to mole speak) and speaks with them

regularly. i am certain he reports my every move. due to his current placement in the metal room his safety is assured. But i can wait. it is only a matter of time...

Man to dog trainer: “Every time a bell rings, my dog

goes into the corner.” Dog trainer:

“That’s OK, he is a Boxer.”

Letting your dog run around regularly can reduce his stress level and risk

of ulcers (as well as many other problems).

A dog can carry half its weight comfortably in a backpack.

Dogs chew on grass to add fiber to their diet. It’s the K9’s salad.

No More No

Try it. For one month remove the word “No,” from your vocabulary when dealing with your dog. By Susan Claire, CPdt

modern dog training is reward-based, which means we reward

behaviors we want repeated, and ignore or re-direct those we want eliminated. Continually saying, “no!” draws attention to the wrong behavior. as parents, surely, you’ve heard the saying, “negative attention is better than no attention.” dogs have a knack for turning negative attention into fun games like “catch me,” or “keep away.” Fun for them, frustrating for us.

one of the core principles of positive, reward-based training is that all creatures repeat behaviors that result in pleasurable consequences and avoid behaviors that result in unpleasant consequences. in other words, dogs do what works to get them what they want. What do they want? mainly, food, attention from us, exercise and play. these are the things they will work to get and therefore, are reinforcers. We can learn to time these reinforcers to encourage desirable behaviors from our dogs. ignoring the undesirable behavior is more effective than saying, “no,” because most creatures, with the exception of some humans perhaps, don’t waste time and energy on behaviors that result in unpleasant consequences.

Let’s put this theory to work: Your dog is very excited when he greets you at the door. his jumping up has caused you to

lose your balance, drop packages, dirtied your clothes; he’s even given you a few bruises. You love him, but would like to see this behavior stop. Why is Buddy jumping on you? he wants your touch and attention. the problem isn’t what he wants; it’s how he’s going about getting it. instead of the usual “no! Buddy- no!” let’s show him a better way to get our attention. the solution is a two-pronged approach: make the undesirable behavior (jumping up) unsuccessful for the dog, and replace it with a successful behavior. each time Buddy jumps up, turn your back on him and walk away. Say absolutely nothing. then use a treat to get him to sit. Pet him immediately, praise him profusely. Bingo! Sitting gets him the attention he wants. Continue petting until he jumps again, then quickly and silently turn away. re-approach, pet and praise when he sits. timing is critical so Buddy makes the connection between his behavior and your reaction. do this consistently and Buddy will begin to offer you the behavior that works (sitting) to get what he wants (your attention). then you’ll know he’s gotten the message: Jumping makes people go away- sitting gets him attention. to your dog, attention is a valued resource-- use it wisely!
