The world’s energy systems are changing but consensus is that the world will continue to rely onfossil fuels for decades to come because they are low-cost, reliable sources of feedstocks, processenergy and power.

Technological advancements with drilling and completion techniques have unlocked tremendousliquids-rich natural gas resources in North America, flooding domestic and international markets withnatural gas and the associated liquids. Petrochemical feedstock accounts for 12% of global oildemand, a share that is expected to continue to grow driven by increasing demand for plastics, fertilizers and other products.

If we consider the alternative, a phase-out of coal with growth in non-hydro renewables such as wind, solar and geothermal coupled with electricity storage, will these new sources of power becomeaffordable enough to displace natural gas? If so, what will the impact to the petrochemical sector be?

In this time of energy evolution, what role will the Canadian petrochemical sector play in globalmarkets? Can Canada expand its market share by exporting affordable and reliable petrochemicalfeedstocks to meet growing demand? What might the impact to Canadian natural gas production andassociated liquids be, and, would an increase in feedstock exports impact the potential for Canada tosee continued development of large petrochemical facilities here in Canada? Are current policieshelping or hindering Canada’s petrochemical sector?

How will growing LNG production impact the sector? Where are the natural gas liquids going?

Session 1: Energy System DisruptorsToday’s energy systems will look significantly different than those of the future. We asked ourpanel to discuss several energy system disruptors on the horizon and what the associatedimpacts to the petrochemical sector might be.

Game Changer: US Natural GasThe US natural gas phenomenon has allowed American producers to capture a large and growingposition in the global market. What does this mean for Canada? How can the Canadianpetrochemical sector work with the upstream producers to ensure availability of feedstocks?

The LNG EffectGerry Goobie, Principal, Goobie Tulk Inc. Energy systems and sectors are interconnected and evolving. The world’s efforts to transitionfrom coal to natural gas have opened doors for potential Canadian LNG producers, given WesternCanada’s abundance of natural gas. LNG is also a beacon for Western Canada's petrochemicalproducers, who use natural gas liquids as feedstock for their own products. Without new marketsfor methane, feedstock supplies could be at risk. How can LNG producers work with thepetrochemical sector to create value add scenarios for all involved?

The Global Decarbonization of Electricity SystemsAs the world seeks ways to curb greenhouse gas emissions, including some provinces’ plans tophase-out coal, and federal regulation of coal phase-out by 2030, how will electrification impactthe petrochemical sector? Will renewable sources of power gain enough market share todisplace natural gas? If so, where will feedstock for petrochemicals be sourced?

Session 2: Market Demand for PetrochemicalsModerator: Paul Pryce, Principal Advisor, Consulate-General of Japan in CalgaryPetrochemicals are found everywhere in modern energy systems around the world. Demand fromthe construction, automotive, agriculture, electrical and electronics sectors is projected toincrease dramatically in the coming decade. According to the 2018 International Energy Agency(IEA) report, “The Future of Petrochemicals”, the demand for plastics has surpassed demand forsteel, aluminum and cement. The IEA projects that petrochemicals will account for “more than athird of the growth in world oil demand to 2030, and nearly half to 2050.” Where is all thisdemand coming from? Join the panel to examine three key opportunities for the petrochemicalsector.

Demand Growth in AsiaWith increased supply in the region, will the Asian market continue to provide demand forCanadian petrochemicals? Will slower natural gas demand growth in China grind global LNGmarkets, already grappling with oversupply and low spot prices, to a halt?

Electric VehiclesSynthetic oil, plastics and lubricants all come from petrochemicals. Various polymers andplastics provide lightweight, inexpensive, plentiful, easy-to-shape, durable products used to makevehicles lighter and more fuel efficient. The efforts to reduce vehicle weights are compounded bythe motivation to convert to electric vehicles to extend their range. How will the petrochemicalindustry be impacted by this drive to lighten vehicles? And, just how big is the opportunity?

Alternative FeedstocksRenato Monteiro, Director, Business Development, North America, MethanexOutside of North America and the Middle East, naphtha is the favoured feedstock in Europe andChina. Are there other feedstock alternatives that should be assessed? Are biofuels and CO2utilization emerging sources for feedstock substitution? What is the role of methanol in thismarket evolution?

Session 3: Life With PlasticsPlastics change lives but present environmental and social challenges. The societal benefitsoutweigh the risks associated with the production and use of plastics, but end-of-life disposalcontinues to plague the sector. How does the sector join the conversation and collaborate onsolutions? How can a shift from a linear to a circular economy allow for the continued productionand use of plastics? What is the business rationale for a circular economy?

Defining Single Use – Details MatterChirag Kothari, Senior Consultant, Energy & Chemical Advisory, NexantPlastics change lives – they keep items secure and tamper-proof, reducing disease transmissionand increasing efficiency and hygiene of medicine. They are light weight and durable, reducingfuel usage in vehicles and preventing perishable items from rotting prematurely, resulting ineliminated carbon dioxide emissions. Plastic seals windows and doors, making them draft-freeand more energy-efficient. Plastics provide many benefits which improve quality of life. Butplastics pollute oceans and landfills around the world. Calls for bans on single use plasticsinclude little detail about how producers and consumers can reduce impact while maximizingbenefit. How can the risks and benefits of single use plastics be qualified, quantified andweighted against various environmental, social and economic criteria?

Alliance to End Plastic WasteMichael Burt, Vice President & Global Director Climate and Energy, Dow Chemical CanadaPlastics revolutionized the world once before. It is time for another revolution to keep plasticwaste in its place. The rapid growth of middle-class and industrial economies has drasticallyincreased the world's plastic consumption in recent decades – and infrastructure developmenthas not kept pace. The result is a dramatic increase in plastic waste. While there is no singleanswer to the issue of plastic waste in the environment, the sector is collaborating to promoteinfrastructure development, education and engagement, innovation, and clean up efforts to keepplastic waste in the right place.

Circular Economy Pietro Di Zanno, StantecThe benefits of a circular economy for business are clear. More effective use of materials meanslower costs and less waste. It means new sources of value for customers and citizens, better riskmanagement of raw materials, and improved approaches to the supply chain.

Session 4: Growing PainsModerator: Dave Tulk, Principal, Goobie Tulk Inc.How the petrochemical sector intersects with the upstream natural gas sector  is important tounderstand. How does a healthy Alberta natural gas sector support investment inthe  petrochemical industry? What is Alberta doing to ensure the health of the natural gassector?  How will potential growth of the petrochemical sector be impacted by broaderenvironmental policy goals? Supply chain logistics are complex. How can improved tracking andvisualization of the transport of petrochemical products improve operational efficiency?

The Impact of Climate-Related Financial Risk DisclosureCanadian petrochemical projects face a number of challenges including global competition, supply concerns, global volatility and procurement of off-take agreements. Sustainable finance isabout to add to the list of hurdles. How will financial institutions deal with the due diligence ofclimate related risks and ESG matters, especially environmental and social risk impacts? TheEquator Principles are one of many global frameworks that companies, as well as financialinstitutions, will need to take notice of.

Sustainable Growth through Digital TransformationTerry Chmelyk, Vice President, Operational Excellence & Automation Solutions Execution,Spartan ControlsThe Pan-Canadian Framework for Clean Growth and Climate Change is the Government ofCanada’s plan to help Canadians meet emissions reduction targets, grow the economy, and buildresilience to a changing climate. How can the petrochemical sector support efforts to becomecarbon neutral by 2050? How does the sector digitally transform to ensure it has the rightemissions data to inform decisions about the design, construction and operation of complexpetrochemical facilities? How can data and analytics help the sector better understand its fullemissions footprint and put in sustainable management systems?

The Future of Supply Chain: Are You Ready?Brian Cornick, President & CEO and Corrie Banks, Director, Logistics, Cando Rail ServicesToday, the biggest issue facing the rail industry, or more accurately its customers, is a lack ofdata. Shippers continue to move product, despite this data deficiency, but at what cost? Aretransportation inefficiencies only discovered at the point of shipping or could operational andinformation efficiency help to reduce a fleet, without diminishing the volume shipped, before it’seven purchased? How can real-time data help to debottleneck your business?
