FAREWELL TO THE 2015 SCHOOL YEAR!

It hardly seems possible that another School year has all but finished!

The last few weeks have been a traditional blend of examinations, tests and report writing and Presentation Ceremonies.

Last night saw the Year 10 and Year 11 students farewelled and tomorrow evening sees the Year 9 Graduation and Presentation evening being held.

Next week the Primary School has its Presentation Assembly on Tuesday morning and that evening the Year 7 & 8 Presentation Evening will be held.

These events are a reminder of what has been accomplished over the course of another busy year for the School.

In our classrooms, on our sporting fields, our stages, in our Art, Dance, Music and Design and Technology studios, in our Libraries, on interstate and overseas tours and Pilgrimages, in Co-Curricular programmes and in our daily interactions our students have had wonderful opportunities at every Year level to develop their knowledge, their understanding of the needs of others and their potential.

These opportunities are the result of the dedicated work of the students’ teaching staff which, in turn, is so ably supported by the School’s non-teaching staff.

To all of the School’s staff I extend, on behalf of their students and their families, my many thanks for your commitment to the noble profession of teaching and all its many demands.

To the members of the School Council I extend my thanks for their support of the School and their willingness to contribute in many ways to its development.

To all School families I extend the compliments of the festive season to you along with my wishes for a restful and, above all else, safe holiday.

I take this opportunity to record the departure of Mr. McLean after nine years of leadership of the Senior School. I thank him for his many labours and wish he and his family success and excitement as they relocate to Kuala Lumpur where Mr. McLean will be the Principal of the Senior and Middle Schools at the Australian International School. Father Chris Beal also leaves us at the end of this year after five years service as our School Chaplain. Both men have contributed much to the ethos and evolution of our School.

Mrs. Natalie Shaw will be the Acting Associate Principal of the Senior School in Term One, 2016, with a permanent appointment to be made to this role during Term One, 2016. The School will advertise at the start of next year for a Chaplain to commence at the beginning of Semester Two, 2016. Mrs. Linda Pilton will carry out the work of the School Chaplain in Semester One during which the School will invite clergy to the School to administer the sacraments at the School’s Communion services.

As the year ends, one could be forgiven for feeling somewhat melancholy and despairing about the state of the world. In truth, however, there has never been an era of history free from challenges and tragedies. Yet, it is also true that the health, longevity and quality of life of the citizens of our world has never been greater. I have always believed that when you observe a society that seeks to educate and enlighten its citizens you will find a society that prospers. Australia is such a society and our school is founded on eternal Christian values that centre on the worth of every individual’s life. Equally encouraging is the fact that around the world the awareness and pursuit of democracy, human rights, elim-ination of discrimination and the promotion of equality amongst all peoples has never been more vigorous than it has been today.

Schools such as ours have an indispensable role in reinforcing and developing the Christian sense of the worth and val-ue of our existence and the purposes to which the Grace of God can be put. The School’s Carol Service on the Primary School Oval on Thursday 26th November was a seasonal reminder of the importance of the gift of this grace from Jesus’ life.

May I conclude my thoughts by quoting the powerful concluding words of the 1927 poem, Desiderata, that have an es-pecial meaning as we reflect upon another year and look forward to the next: With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Strive to be happy.

SENIOR SCHOOL Farewell from Mr McLean Just over nine years ago, former Principal, Mr Doug Swingler, offered me the chance to

become the Head of the Senior School. To this day, I have remembered his wish that I

listen to those around me and watch and learn. Almost immediately, I had the chance to

meet our wonderful staff at the end of Year Review and practise those listening skills! Re-

view complete – I finally had my chance to start meeting students and families.

What an enjoyable nine years it has been since. As I said at the Year 12 Valedictory Even-

ing this year, I am very proud to have helped guide 679 out of the 798 graduates from our wonderful School. Right

from my very first group of graduates, with Kate Major and Shehan Mathew as Head Girl and Head Boy, through to

this year’s graduates led by Caitlin Paroczai and Matthew Sellwood, I have enjoyed being a part of something much

bigger than myself; being a part of our wonderful School’s history. Students from all age groups have made me proud,

as they have continued to build the history of our School.

Relocating to Malaysia has been a difficult decision; however, it is a decision that my family and I are excited about.

Ultimately, we want to experience the challenge that many of our School families have experienced themselves – to

experience different cultures in a foreign country. Learning to live in a system unlike ours will hopefully give my chil-

dren new experiences to be cherished. Even though I will miss my colleagues, past and present students and families

we luckily still live in a world where electronic communication makes contact much easier. So I say thank you to all

who have been associated with me through this School, particularly Mr Dowse as Principal, whose thoughtful and pro-

fessional guidance wields a large influence over all of us.

CHAPLAIN’S CHAT Dear Friends,

A busy year at Peter Moyes Anglican Community School draws to a close, and the great sea-son of Christmas approaches when we remember the birth of Christ who came that there might be peace on earth where people are of goodwill toward one another. This peace does not come by a magic wand, but by Shalom - our daily struggle for peace strengthened by the Spirit of God.

Over 2.5 Billion Christians will pause on Christmas Day to remember the birth of Christ who came as one of us, weak and human, but strong in the power of the Holy Spirit. 1 billion Moslems will also recognise this day, as they consider Jesus to be one of the great Prophets of God. Many Buddhists and Hindus will know of the meaning and sacred significance of Christmas. This means that well over two thirds of the world's population will pause on Christmas Day to recognise Jesus Christ as the Anointed Messenger of God.

This is my last Chaplain’s Column as Chaplain to PMACS. Thank you for your friendship and for the privilege of being the school chaplain for 5 years.

May the Peace and Joy of Christmas be with you and those you love this Christmas, and may you strive daily for God's Shalom.

Best Wishes Father Chris Beal School Chaplain

YEAR 7 INDONESIAN On Thursday 5th November 2015, the Year 7 cohort went on an excursion to the Perth Zoo concurrent to their studies in Indonesian this term. The Year 7 Indonesian Continuer students are conducting a unit of work on Kebun Binatang where they design their own Indonesian zoo while the Beginners are learning about vocabulary related to going on a social outing. The students, staff and parent helpers thoroughly enjoyed themselves. The students also learned a lot through the authentic learning experience. Below are two student accounts of the day.

Ibu Swailes

LOTE Teacher

That amazing day at the zoo… where we had close encoun-ters with harimau, orang utan dan gajah and spent the day wandering about. On the 5th of November, the Year Sevens along with teachers and parent helpers cruised through the zoo encountering animals of all types, for our Indonesian classes. It was a day full of laughter, smiles and excitement and an unforgettable day. It was full of fabulous moments such as watching both the tiger and sun bear up close; seeing the lion lying on his back lazing in the sun, as well as watch-ing the meerkats play mischievously. I would like to personal-ly thank all the parents for giving up their day as well as the teachers for giving up their time , but especially Ibu Swailes, for organising this fabulous day. From Lily Graham 7.3 (Indonesian Continuers)

On Thursday the 5th of November, the Year 7 students departed

from school on an excursion to Perth Zoo, as part of the Indonesian

language programme. It was an amazing day. We split into groups

and walked through all of the attractions. We saw reptiles, penguins,

tigers, orang-utans, tortoises and lions- in fact, almost everything! I

enjoyed visiting the zoo as it had been a long while since my last vis-

it. We ate a picnic style lunch sitting on the green grass, and then we

were left to explore the zoo by ourselves and revisit any of our fa-

vourite exhibits. This trip has enhanced my knowledge of the envi-

ronment and animals in Indonesia and contributed to my learning. I

think it was a great trip and a good way to spend an educational day.

REACH EXTENSION PRESENTATION EVENING Tuesday 17th November saw eleven Year 7 & 8 students present their independent studies to parents and staff. Deanne

Baker supervised the students’ year-long study. All studies followed the Kaplan Model of research and enquiry and were

extremely diverse.

Students chose a topic of interest to them and researched, interviewed and produced a final product that included a

short film, posters, books, models and even a crime scene! They worked extremely hard and this was evident in their

polished presentations. Students presented very informative information ranging from sustainable housing to the

effects of alcohol.

Parent and sibling support was invaluable throughout the process and they were thanked for the support over the year

and attendance on the evening, particularly those who had starring roles in films and video presentations!

A particularly personal presentation was given by Preston Jones about survival rates of prematurely born children, as he

was a premature baby born at 26 weeks.

Congratulations to all students, the presentations were very impressive and you should be proud of your efforts.

Presentations:

Dylan Sheikhzadeh – Film making on the topic of bullying

Finn McCaffrey Nichols – Sustainable Housing

Cody Paull – Solving a crime using forensics

Albie White – Developing a computer program

Andre Durrheim – The invention and use of codes in ancient and modern civilisations

Joshua Melendez – Animation Creation

Paris Wong – Comparing the Prussian, Finnish and American Education systems

Mia Wilkinson – Narratives on Natural Disasters

Alicia Cooke – The development of Bionic Limbs over the last 20 years

Ethan Syme – The influence of Drugs and Alcohol on crime.

Preston Jones – How have the survival rates and quality of life improved for premature children over the last 20 years?

Physics Olympiad Success The Physics Olympiad is a national competition, where students are selected after demonstrating a keen aptitude for Physics and the capability to apply their understanding to a range of diverse problems. The vast majority of students are selected are achieving already high marks within the current syllabus. The content of the questions is designed to apply their knowledge to problems that would be encountered at University level. This year five Year 11 students were selected to take part in the competition: Ross Godwin, Jason Hughes and Stefan Wollhaf all received Credit certificates, placing them in the top 60% of all students. Oliver Martin achieved a Distinction placing him in the top 30% of all Australian students. Congratulations to them all on their excellent achievements! Phil Carr Physics Teacher

MUSIC DIRECTOR’S CHOICE 2015 The evening of Wednesday, November 18th saw our annual Music Director’s Choice Concert held in our school auditorium. It was a great musical evening with many highlights. Every performance brought forth beautiful music and many smiles. The concert began with the first performance by our newly created Junior Orchestra playing two short items which included pizzicato to show off the strings as well as some powerful woodwinds, brass and

percussion. It was an ex-citing sound for the fu-ture. Brandon Orgill sang with remarkable musical maturity followed by our Primary Choir with a Christmas touch. Trevor Stockton-Rice hit the keys before our PMACS Vocal Ensemble sang “Royals” a-Capella which I admit, was one of my favourites of the evening. Claudia Harrison sang with lovely tone and was beautifully accompanied by Preston Jones on acoustic guitar. Tess Crocker and Banafsheh Sheriff sang a duet accompanying themselves with four electric keyboards (yes 4) before Ame-lie White and Jocelyn Melendez showed why they won their section of the

2015 ASC Piano Competition. The Middle School Choir under Melita Bursac’s very able direction brought back memories of “Yesterday” before Georgia Jansen, Reuben Reade, Brandan Martins and Byron Horgan from Primary School rocked the scene. Brittany Hamilton gave her usual powerful, professional performance before ‘Muzomix’, our busy community involved band, brought us home with three contrasting arrangements.

There are so many people to thank that I am reluctant to try. Parents whose support is of many hours, Bronwyn Booth who has yet again gone exponentially beyond the norm, Andrea Black with whom I have enjoyed team teaching Year Fives to help create the Junior Orchestra, Andrew Frankish and Michael Connolly who set and control the scene, our fifteen instrumental teachers and many patient classroom teachers, as always our School’s administrative team, and I know there are very many more doing the essential ‘not so little’ things and, most of all, our simply brilliant students.

A DAY IN SENIOR SCHOOL FOR YEAR 7 Last Thursday, the Year 7 classes spent a day in the Doug Swingler Senior School building. Fortunately for the seven Year

7 classes, this was a day when there were no WACE Examinations and the students set up home in the first floor class-

rooms and Lecture Theatre.

The reason for this was that Year 7 students had to make way for the Year 6 Transition Day with these students moving

into the Year 7 area.

The Year 7 students learnt what it was like for Senior School students to move from one area or classroom to another as

they worked their way through the seven periods of the day. Avoiding the distraction of the beautiful ocean views, shar-

ing the stairs and facilities with the Senior Students and seeing different teachers walking past classrooms all made for a

different sort of day.

Senior School students enjoyed seeing the students, in some cases who were younger siblings, in “their area”! It was a

great way to promote sub-school integration, albeit for one day.

TRANSITION TO MIDDLE SCHOOL This year, the Transition to Middle School programme welcomed all Year 7 2016 students to the Middle School on Thurs-

day 19th November. A well-structured programme of ‘get to know you’ games as well as familiarisation with classes and

classrooms has been developed with our new students in mind. All students tried their hand at a few Science experi-

ments with Mr Patel and Mr Phillips, sampled their edible wares from the Foods department or made a letter rack in the

Woodwork workshop!

The aims and objectives of the day are to familiarise students new to the Middle School with the physical environment

they will occupy, meet a few new teachers in addition to their Team Leaders, Deputy and Associate Principal. Anxieties

were dissipated, new experiences were had and new friendships were made. I hope the students are excited by the year

ahead, the learning experiences that will challenge them, the activities that they will participate in and the firm friend-

ships that they will make. We look forward to sharing their journey with them.

PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWS As the year comes to an end, let us pause to give thanks for the blessings received by the School over this year. It has

been an outstanding year for our Primary School and we have a lot to celebrate. I am constantly amazed at the aptitude

of our students and staff as they continue to achieve at the highest level.

We are increasingly seeing evidence of innovation and creativity happening each day in the classroom and beyond,

offering flexibility to learn in different environments or settings. This could take place outside in the fresh air or using the

technology tools for greater global access. In lower year levels, our children have been learning through investigative

play and discovery. This sits alongside explicit teaching to enhance their knowledge of the world around them.

In the Primary School we see teaching and learning as an opportunity to engage with each other in exciting learning ex-

periences. We are increasing the expectation in ICT capabilities by making the most of the digital technologies available

to our students and adapting to new ways of doing things as technology evolves. Our Year 4 team of staff are committed

and ready to implement our 1:1 laptop programme next year. We have held three very successful parent seminars for

our Year 3 Parents in readiness for the launch of this programme.

CAROLS BY CANDLELIGHT AND NATIVITY PLAY

Last Thursday night our Primary School hosted a most successful Picnic and

Nativity Carols singing service. It was a delightful occasion, and I was won-

derfully surprised by the size of the audience. The ngiht was well worth the

effort by a large team of staff led by Mrs Karen de Swardt, Mrs Andrea Black

and Mr Justin Tonti.

We wanted something friendly, participative and simple for the community

to enjoy in readiness for the Christmas season.

Parents of Year 6 students are invited to attend the Year 6 Transition As-

sembly to be held in the Allan Shaw Centre on Friday 4th December. This is a lovely way to acknowledge the Year 6 stu-

dents, the role of the Primary School as a foundation to their education and to wish them well as they prepare to com-

mence their Middle Schooling.

CHRISTMAS DONATIONS

We have been encouraging our students to donate a book to Anglicare and some to Alkimos Primary. The school com-

munity has rallied together to share the gift of knowledge with others through books.

Each day we have watched as our Christmas Book Trees grow. They have become quite large now and we are all very

proud and touched by the generosity of our students.

Thank you also for the donations of non-perishable food items to be donated to Anglicare for those less fortunate or in crisis in our area. Our Primary Captains have worked hard in collecting and sorting this into hampers.

DEPARTING STAFF

I wish to acknowledge the work of the following staff who are leaving at the end of the year:

Mrs Andrea Black, who sadly has only been with us this year and is leaving to join St Hilda’s Anglican School for

Girls which is very close to home and less distance to commute with a young family. She has been an outstanding

operator in her short time with us. We welcome Mrs Tess Loewdin as her replacement from Perth College.

Mr Atish Patel will join Middle School for one year and will be replaced by Miss Rebecca Nelson and Mrs Mel Law-

ton will leave us to go on 12 months maternity leave with Miss Lucinda Williams taking over the helm. We wish

Mrs Lawton well with the forthcoming birth of her second child.

Miss Chloe Kyriakacis is leaving to work at Guildford Grammar as Mrs Jan Golding is returning from Maternity Leave. Mrs Edell Roberston will not be returning from Maternity Leave next year nor will Miss Jodie McQueen from Long Service Leave.

END OF YEAR REMINDERS

Music Concert – Tuesday 1st December 2.00pm – 2.40pm There will be music items from Years 3 and 4 with some music solo performances and the Year 5/6 Choir to enjoy.

Moving On Up Day – Wednesday, 2nd December 9.40-10.20am

During this time all students will have an opportunity to experience the environment of their next year level class, mak-

ing for a smoother transition for the new School year.

Year 6 Transition Assembly – Friday, 4th December 1.30-2.30pm

PRESENTATION ASSEMBLY – TUESDAY 8TH DECEMBER 9.00 – 10.30AM

I encourage all parents to attend the finale of the year in the Primary School, as it is one of the most significant events

our School calendar. It is an opportunity to focus on the Primary School at Peter Moyes, not only celebrating our stu-

dents in their achievements and awards, but also providing an opportunity to acknowledge the roles of our students,

staff and families in our School community.

Morning tea will be provided after the Assembly for parents and guests.

CHRISTMAS WISHES

Thank you for working with me and my Primary School staff this year. I look forward to welcoming you back in 2016. I

hope you will be able to take the time over the holiday season to renew, refresh and rejuvenate with friends and family,

and reflect on the significance of the Christmas message.

ACADEMIC ALL STARS CONTEST On Tuesday 24th November nine students from Primary Reach Academic Extension competed in the annual Academic

All Stars contest held at Alkimos Baptist. This year we competed against Quinns Baptist, Alkimos Baptist and for the first

time, our sister school, St James’ also joined in the fun.

Working in teams of three, the students tackled six quick ten

minute activities, on diverse topics such as Maths “Brainsnack”

problem solving; puzzling Quizzles; geography; famous land-

marks; animals and inventions.

For the longer challenges, they had to design and construct a

balloon powered car and create a poster and jingle to educate

migrants to Australia about one unique aspect of our country.

Despite the tight deadlines for both of these tasks, the creativi-

ty and ingenuity displayed was inspiring.

The following students are to be congratulated for demonstrating excellent teamwork and representing the school with

pride. Whilst all of our teams excelled at the lateral thinking puzzles and engineering task, it was Quinns Baptist Green

team who were awarded the medals as the overall winners.

PLAY IN THE PRIMARY SCHOOL Can you remember happy times as a kid, playing outside with friends, building cubby hous-es, exploring nearby bush, climbing trees and over rocks, rolling down grassy hills, paddling in creeks? You might think you were ‘just playing’ – having fun, messing about or maybe getting up to mischief!

However, these experiences give children im-portant cognitive, physical, social, emotional and life skills, from resilience and problem solving, to learning about getting on with others.

There is a growing body of research that sup-ports the idea of connecting our children with the natural world through free play.

So, in the last few weeks the Primary School stu-dents and staff have been extremely busy learn-ing through play. We engaged the services of

Nature Play Solutions to lead our Messy Mud Day for the Pre-Primary classes and the Loose Parts Play for the other year levels.

The students had so much fun. It was terrific to see the smiles on their faces and how engaged they were with items of junk that they all used in so many imaginative and creative ways.

Please ask your child about the experience and enjoy the photos.

MINECRAFT CO-CURRICULAR The Minecraft team welcomed parents, grandparents and siblings into the Primary Library to demonstrate their achievements this semester. The visitors where taken on a train ride around a theme park of famous building replicas, including the the Louvre, Bucking-ham Palace and the London Eye. MOVEMBER Movember is an awareness raising campaign which provides donations for research into prostate

cancer.

During the year, male students in the Senior School kindly donated to Movember whenever they were required to im-

prove their personal presentation to be clean-shaven at School. The benefits have been two-fold, with students looking

their best at School and looking after their own future health with a possible cure for prostate cancer in men.

A group of staff in the School have actively supported the Movember call to raise money for this worthy cause. The Sen-

ior School donation of $46.00 has been given to boost Scott Horrigan’s Movember campaign.

P & F NEWS – WEEK 8 TERM 4 2015 Final 2015 Meeting

Thank you to those who attended our final meeting for 2015. Although it was a small turnout, we had constructive

conversation and reflected upon our P&F goals for the future.

One of our major priorities is to encourage and welcome new parents to our committee next year. There are a multi-

tude of positive rewards associated with becoming a member which all of our existing and previous members can

attest to. We will endeavour to promote the benefits of being involved in this organisation which fosters a close-knit

relationship amongst families at PMACS. In 2016.

If you are interested in joining or learning about what we do for the school community, please contact

[email protected] or Amanda Chila (President) [email protected]

You are warmly welcomed to attend any of our open meetings and we hope to see lots of new faces in 2016.

We look forward to working together and another rewarding year ahead!
