The Animal Welfare Branch of the Department of Primary Industry and Resources reminds pet owners to plan for the care of their pets during the cyclone season. Advance planning will help keep your family and animals safe. Cyclones are stressful for pets as well as people. Animals react differently under stress. Even the most trustworthy pets may panic, hide, try to escape, or even bite or scratch. Keep your pets safe during the cyclone season For more information visit www.securent.nt.gov.au or contact Animal Welfare on 1300 720 386 Prepare an emergency pet pack with: pet food for a minimum of three days, with bowls and treats in cans or waterproof containers potable water in plastic bottles a can opener for canned food pet medications and medical records in a waterproof container sturdy leashes or carriers so you can move your pets safely and they can’t escape recent photos of your pet in case they get lost the name and details of your veterinarian pet beds and toys, if there is room. If you decide to stay at home with your pets: be prepared for disruption to power, water, and communication bring the animals inside and keep them in a secure room where they are safe and comfortable encourage calm pet behaviour with praise and attention—close the blinds, put on a radio, and distract pets with games and food rather than trying to sooth and comfort obviously scared pets, be cheerful and in control to demonstrate that nothing is wrong ensure you have an adequate supply of food and water ensure a toilet litter tray or newspapers are provided provide bedding. Going to a shelter with petsMostemergencysheltersdonotallowpets,butsomeundercovercarparksintheDarwinregionaredesignatedasplaceswhereresidentscanshelterintheircarswiththeirpets,providedtheyareproperlyrestrained.Carrybirds,rabbits,guineapigs,mice,snakes,lizards,etc.,incages,secureboxeswithairholes,orinpillowcasestiedtightly.

Thecarparkswerebuilttocodebuttheyarenotdesignedasemergencyshelters.Theydonothavesupportingstaff,arenotfullyenclosed,arewithoutamenities,anddonothavedebrisscreens.Vehiclesandpetsmaynotbeleftunattended.

Horses and livestock, stay or relocate?Thedecisiontorelocatelivestockmustbemadeearly,asalateevacuationcouldincreasethechanceofinjuryordeath.Assessthelivestock’senvironmenttodetermineitssuitabilityduringthecycloneanduptothreedaysafter.

Therisksyoushouldconsiderintheeventofacycloneinclude:• thelocationandaccessibilityoftheproperty

(closetomainroads,accessroadnotpronetoflooding)

• theconditionandplacementofthestable,yardsandfences(fencesingoodrepair,potentialforflyingobjectsordebrisattheproperty)

• inaflood,assessyourabilitytomoveanimalstohighgroundwithadequatenaturalfeed.Additionalfeedmayberequiredforstockthat’sstranded

• theresourcesavailabletocombatacyclone(accesstolocalemergencyassistance,helpfromothers).

Staying with horses and livestockIfyouleaveyourlivestockinastable,ensureitiswellconstructed.Leavethehorseinasoundstructurewiththesurroundingareawellsecuredandlooseobjectsstoredortieddown.

Ifyouleaveyourlivestockinapaddock,thefencesneedtobeingoodrepairsoanimalsdon’ttaketheopportunitytoboltiftheyarefrightened.Ifleavinganimalsinapaddockorstable:• placealightrugandbellbootsonhorses• leaveanadequatesupplyofdrinkingwater• markgatesandwaterlocationsonamapof

yourpropertyincasesomeonehastomovestockforyou.

IdentificationRegardlessofyourplan,ensurethatpetsandanimalsareproperlyidentifiedwithanametagincludingcontactphonenumber,amicro-chip,orabrand.
