FEEDING DOGS AND CATS
FEEDING DOGS
Choosing the right dog food plays an important role in keeping
your dog healthy and fit. Feeding the best quality dog food
promotes health and increases the lifespan of your dog. It has
been found that dogs fed on high quality foods, are energetic
and have a shiny coat. Dog food analysis helps us know the
different ingredients used in making dog food. After examining
the ingredients, a veterinarian can analyze whether the food isof good quality. Dog food analysis is used to ensure that the
food meets the nutritional requirements of the dog.
There are certain factors that need to be considered before
choosing a dog food. For instance, underweight or overweight
dogs have different nutritional needs. Dogs with a higher
activity level need more nutrition-dense foods. Dog food
available in the market are classified into 3 main types. Theyare 'grocery store' foods, premium foods, and healthy foods.
Grocery store foods is the cheapest option to feed your dog.
Although these foods may be pocket friendly, they contain
ingredients which are not easily digested. They are blended
with additives and chemicals that are responsible for causing
diseases like cancer. These foods fail to provide the nutrition
required for the proper growth of your dog. Quality contro
standards are very low in these foods. As a result, in somecases, poisonous substances such as plastic, are detected in
the analysis. On the other hand, premium foods provide high
quality ingredients, but still contain certain elements such as
chemical preservatives, artificial flavors and colors that can
be harmful to your dog's health. Premium foods are much
more costly than 'grocery store' foods, as they contain a
higher grade of ingredients that are easily digested and are
beneficial for your dog. Premium foods are generally found inveterinary clinics and pet stores.

FEEDING DOGS AND CATS
FEEDING CATS
Your cat adds so much to your life, and you want to feed her a
healthy food, but with all of the choices out there, how do you
know which food is best?
First of all, keep in mind that there is no one food that is best
for every cat. There is no single food that will give every cat the
brightest eyes, the shiniest coat, the most energy, and the bestdigestion. Cats are individuals just like people, which means
that you could feed a brand of very well-formulated food to a
group of cats and find that most of them do great on it, some
not as well, and it may actually cause some gastrointestinal
upset in a few cats. Luckily, there are many well-formulated cat
foods to choose from today, and it is fine to try several to
determine which one works best for your cat.
When you have done some comparison and picked out a well-formulated food, make sure you allow ample time for your cat to
make the transition from his current food to the new one. Normal
bacteria in the intestine help your cat digest food. A sudden
change in food can lead to changes in the number and type of
these bacteria, making it harder for food to be digested, and
resulting in intestinal upset. To avoid problems, switch to a new
food slowly, over the course of at least 7-10 days. Start by mixing
25% new and 75% old food, and feed that for at least 3 days. If algoes well, go to 50% of each type of food for 3 days, then 75% new
and 25% old for 3 days. By now, your pet should be ready to eat
only the new food. If problems occur, consult your veterinarian for
advice.
After you have done all you can to make sure a food is nutritionally
sound, take a look at your cat after he has been on the new food
for at least a month. Bright eyes, a shiny coat, good body condition(not too thin or overweight), and good energy will let you know
you are doing a good job with your pet's nutrition

TIPS IN ORDER TO
FEEDING YOUR PET
7
A suitable feeding of dogs and cats it is important in orderto maintain the animal healthy, healthful and to help its
development. Also we can control the odor of its excrement
through the selection of the food. When you are selecting
it, you should to have present the age of the pet and own
characteristics of the race, in such a way that it does not
affect its health to him. In the market you can find a lot of
types and formulate. We can find products made in own
country and imported products. Nevertheless even thoughit considers that it has selected the best food for its pet,
should be kind to its acceptance and possible to affect for
example allergies, digestive upheavals and others.
For a right feeding, the aspects most important to
consider are the breeds, the age, and the formula of
the food. Nowadays you can fine pet food in a lot of
places and a lot of brands. The mains places to buy pet
food are veterinary, pet shop and supermarkets.
Brands that are offered in the commerce are for
example Science Diet, Dog Show, Pedigree, Whiskas,
Alpo, Ascan, Pro Plan, Eukannuba, Master Cat and
others. The amount of food that your pets should eat
depends on the breeds and the age. Some of the
breeds of dogs with greater risk of obesity are for
example the Labrador. The food also selected should
be considered in the formulation varies according to
the mark. The protein source is a one of the main
elements when buying food; we can find protein of
animal origin and vegetable origin. The foods with
protein animal origin can be formulated with cattle
meat, chicken, lamb, salmon and others. The vitamins
and minerals are other aspects that you should know
about the food that you provided to it. The Veterinary
Doctor can advise you for a suitable feeding.

TIPS IN ORDER TO
FEEDING YOUR PET
You understand that exercise is good for help your pet to maintain a healthy weigh, keep their muscles and helping their live longer and feel better. Cats have more
possibility to do exercise than dogs. Different pets require different amounts of
exercise, so it may be best to have a call with your vet before determining the correct
evel for your pets exercises. When are cases of obesity, you can be implemented
programs in order to correct. Program includes it walking and feeding with food that
contains low levels of calories. It is important the size of the place where the pet live
because he/she should have the possibility of move. If you can buy some toys for your
pet, is a best practice because its help to do exercises. You can buy to boons made withdifferent ingredients.

If you read the Health Worldwide Organization (OMS) information related to human
health definition is possible that you could find the following sentence: State of
complete physical, mental and social wellbeing and not merely the absence of
disease. Well, in the animal world, most veterinarians believe that the term health
refers us to the physiological well-being of an animal, not only broad concept that
refers to the presence or absence of diseases. Interesting similarity with the definition
of human health! In addition, the topic extends to non-infectious diseases,
overcrowding, stress, fatigue, nutrition, water availability, temperature, cleanliness,
attention and care, sheltered, and any other factor that alters the physiological
wellbeing. A healthy animal, in general, is always happy and alert. Therefore, any
deviation in the appearance and behavior (listlessness, drooping head, sunken eyes,
slow and clumsy movements, to name a few) will tell you that health is broken.
For these reasons, is very important to understand
the disease as an impairment of health or an
alteration in normal body functioning and identify the
different types:
Infectious diseases: Are caused by specific
pathogens: viruses, bacteria, fungi. Some of
these are themselves contagious, so it can be
transmitted to other animals, directly or
indirectly.
Parasitic diseases: Are caused by externa
parasites, internal or protozoa. Certain infectious
and parasitic diseases, in turn, may be
transmissible, it is common to man and animals.
Non-infectious diseases: Meanwhile, refers to
those caused by certain genetic abnormalities,
nutritional deficiencies, metabolic diseases, or
toxic by ingestion of certain toxic agents,
inorganic and / or organic.

Pet Health
Pet health and alternative health for pets have been
a part of my life forever. Alternative pet health was
used on our dairy farm when I was growing up.
think I might have even been practicing some of
Cesar Millans (the Dog Whisperer) behavior
echniques with our farm dogs and I didnt even
know it.
Cesar Millan wasnt even born yet. His famous
philosophy he uses for training people and
ehabilitating dogs is exercise, discipline with calm
assertive energy, and then reward.

Catnip
A medicinal alternative health practices for pets includes
the catnip plant. It was usually found in a shaded area
under our fir trees. The leaves and stalk were a luscious
green color with the leaves having a soft texture.
In the cooked state it provided a tea which was poured
over the cat or dog food. The tea was given if the animal
showed any digestive problems or cough or just signs of
not feeling well.
Another alternative health remedy for our pets was
placing this same tea on any skin or facial sores the cat
or dog had. This was a very soothing and comforting
alternative health practice.

Other Natural Solutions
For nutritional pet health our dogs and cats, on the
arm, were fed whole foods. This included
homemade whole grain breads, our own grass fed
meat, organic eggs, garden fresh vegetables, and rawwhole cows milk. Commercial dog and cat food was
not available until I was a teenager (just a few years
ago).
Today, alternative health for pets has expanded to
nclude therapies such as acupuncture, acupressure,
massage, organically prepared foods, and herbal
medicines.
One of the current methods I am using now for an
alternative pet health practice is the use of Tahitian
Noni Juice or beverage product.
use it for digestive issues that would include
vomiting or diarrhea and on skin and paw irritations.
t has very good anti-inflammatory components and
has no side effects.

We have long been fascinated by the idea of animal intelligence and many pet owners
have speculated on the mental abilities of their animal companions.
We like to know just how close animals are to humans do they think like us? Can they
problem-solve as well as us? Or even better? Scientists are also interested in animal
ntelligence more correctly known as animal cognition from the point of view of
comparative psychology and evolutionary psychology and with the insights it gives on
he development of human intelligence.
The Study of Animal Intelligence
The original method of studying animal cognition
also known as cognitive ethnology was to
perform experiments on intelligence in animals to
determine the cognitive processes and patterns
nvolved in animal behavior.
This included things like classical conditioning and
operant conditioning and was used to account for
he more complex intellectual abilities exhibited
by humans. However, this method only
considered overt behavior as valid data for study
in other words, only extreme forms of behavior
were considered as topics of interest.
The research methods were re-evaluated in the
ate 1900s and since then, researchers have
begun to use a different approach: they start from
known human mental processes and look for
evidence comparable processes in other species.
Most traditional research has always focused on
ats and pigeons but researchers began to focus
more on primates and cetaceans.

Their studies were also combined with results from studies of animal behavior in thenatural environment, via the fields of socio-biology, ethnology and behavioral ecology.
These latter studies often show that animals need certain cognitive abilities in order to
adapt to their ecological niche.
Are Animals Intelligent?
Some researchers in the field strongly support the idea that animals have minds but
while their position has strong support from the lay population, it has not found wideacceptance in the scientific community.
However, researchers have demonstrated animals strong cognitive ability in several
areas. For example, the studies of birds which catch their food through the use of a
sophisticated mind map or even the chimpanzee who learnt sign language. Animal
language acquisition and its importance in revealing animal intelligence is still a
controversial topic.
Areas of Animal Intelligence
In the search for animal analogs of human mental processes, researchers
have concentrated their efforts in the following areas:
Tools and Weapon Use the use of tools for finding food and as weapons
Categorization the ability to discriminate between different categories of stimuli
Reasoning and Problem Solving the ability to solve a range of problems, using
abstract reasoning and supplying spontaneous solutions to problems without
training Memory the use of spatial memory for food catching and the possibility of short-
term memory similar to that in humans.
Consciousness a hotly debated area, regarding whether animals have a concept of
self and can display self-awareness.
Attention - the ability to distribute attention between different aspects of a
stimulus.
Language another controversial area, this involves the attempt to teach language
or language-like behavior to certain species
Emotion perhaps the most controversial of all, this involves research into whether
animals have emotions or feelings which can be qualified in the same way ashuman feelings.

The animals are intelligent depending of the context.Because the animals use different language for
communicate, also helps promote the tourism and
physically are different of the humans. First, the
animals can communicate with certain type of
language created for half of symbols or draws. On the
other hand, the fauna increases the tourism of a
country for its exotic beauty. Thereby, it is cause new
experiences and increases the value of currency. Third,Charles Darwin in the origin of the species established
the explanation of the diversity seen in nature due to
the changes accumulated over the evolution of
successive generations. This is that he creates the
theory of the evolution in which all humans proceed of
the chimpanzees or monkeys. Thus, this it depend of
the religion and of our own criteria. Therefore, we
have long been fascinated with the idea of animaintelligence and many pet owners have speculated on
the mental abilities of their animals.
.We like to know just how close animals are

Scientists are also interested in animal
intelligence more correctly known as
animal cognition from the point of view of
comparative psychology and evolutionary
psychology and with the insights it gives on
the development of human intelligence. This
is, because the brains of a human and the
monkey are similar in many aspects. Though,
many scientists believe that our brain is
more similar that of a mouse genetically. This
is, because the medicaments in their
majority are tested in mice.

owever, other point of the view the animalsromote the tourism. The tourism is very interesting,
ecause it bring new experiences for a country. The
ourism can benefit the country, because it generated
ew currency with the tours and sports; for example:
sit the national parks, recreate tourism, etc.
hus, the tourism in Costa Rica is very cheap than in
ther countries, also the people receive an unequaledeatment, because the majority of the persons come
o Costa Rica for their nature, it is very common. But,
exist other persons that prefer to entertain knowing
he country by visiting the beaches, mountains and
vers.
The tourism generate relax conditions in the
persons, because they forget the stress of theirworks. Therefore, Costa Rica is considered a peace
country, because it doesnt have an army; though
now days the country is living a catastrophe era,
where the violence is increasingly prevalent in our
nation and government doesnt to do nothing to
mend the problems.
One of the points for that there the people visitour country, because it is very beautiful for your
fauna and flora that represent the 3% percentage
of the biodiversity around the world. In Costa
Rica, there exist many options of tourism; for
example, the national parks, museums and the
theatre, among others. Finally, the Costa Ricans
should feel very proud of their country, for all that
is generated with the animals tourism.

OUT OF CONTROL BEHAVIOR CAN BE CONTROLLEDBy: Daniel Estep, Ph.D. and Suzanne Hetts, Ph.D.
One of the most common behavior problems that owners tell us about is their dog
barking, jumping up and getting out of control when greeting new people, especially at
he front door of the home. We have personal experience with this, as our young
Dalmatian Ashley is beside herself with excitement when the doorbell rings. Through
domestication, we have probably selected for this trait of announcing the arrival of
visitors to the territory. Most dogs are like Ashley, and are friendly when greeting other
people, but a few may become aggressive due to territorial, protective or fearfu
motivations.Several things influence how the dog will react to
visitors, including the genetic predisposition of the dog,
early socialization with unfamiliar people, and later
experiences in greeting people. Owners can have a big
influence on whether a dogs greeting behavior getsbetter or worse. If owners allow or encourage barking at
the door to continue unabated, because they think this
is the dogs job, it may eventually be impossible to
talk to people at the door over the dogs barking. Out of
control greetings can often be prevented by teaching a
young puppy or dog new to the household to greet
people in a calm, quiet fashion. The dog can be taught
that the desired behavior is to sit quietly, and that if hedoes so, all the attention he wants plus a tidbit will be
his. Because the dog may be too agitated to learn this at
the door, start teaching this behavior when the dog is
less distracted. Puppy classes and basic obedience
classes for older dogs can help teach these skills.
Owners should never encourage dogs to bark, jump up
or get excited in the presence of strangers no matter
how cute it appears. By establishing consistent rulesfrom the beginning and then letting the dog know that
it is worth his while to follow them, out of control
behavior can usually be prevented.
Once out of control behavior has become established, it is much more difficult to teach
ew behavior. We know from experience with Ashley, as she was out of control when she
ame to us. Teaching her appropriate greeting behavior has been a slow process. Luckily,
er problem is just being too friendly. If the dogs greeting includes threatening or
ggressive behavior to strangers, professional help may be required.

Animals are spectacular, as living beings deserve our
respect and admiration. When we refer to dogs and cats is
like or similar to talk of other family member in many
cases. It is amazing the connection that we create with
these animals, they feel our emotions and feelings and also
we can detect the same. So, it is very important to give
them the best conditions in order that they can have the
optimal develop and maybe this is the key for avoiding bad
or aggressive behavior. Many times, we ask why our dog or
cat is unfriendly with us; this is a current situation thatrequires our analysis in order to understand the reasons
that are causing the problems. Bad behaviors can be
happen because they do not thinking about their acts, but
it is more important to take corrective actions on time and
always provide them a loving and unique home.
Why animals can be aggressive? Aggressiveness is a
means of communication used by the animals to
acquire or maintain a status within their community,
to protect their territory, ward off predators of their
offspring (pups), care for their food, respond to fear,
etc. 1 With this definition we can assimilate these
kinds of aggressive behaviors because they are the
result of the magic of nature. Each animal is unique
and depending of the environment, it reacts with
several attitudes. Dogs and cats communicate
differently from humans. They carefully see our
movements, facial expressions, eye contact and our
smell in order to define your correct behavior. This is a
natural process and we need to adjust to it and not
want to change it. Many problems occur due to
communication issues between the two species. In
this point, it is very important to learn from our pets
because they also learn from us.

As we know, aggressive behaviors can benatural and normal for dogs and cats, but
unacceptable for people. This is our first
problem because in many cases people do not
have tolerance and they decide not take
importance of the situation and to punish these
behaviors with violence. This is our second
problem, violence only brings more violence.
So, if we want eliminate aggressive behaviors, this is not the correct way. We have a lot of
possibilities in order to correct misconducts.
Understanding the behavior of a dog or cat is
the base to train him well. Based on this
argument, it is very important to mention that
we need to understand our dog or cat.
Happiness, sadness, fear and safety are your pet
expressing feelings continuously. Find out the
mood of your dog is very helpful. This is a guide
and it is necessary to ask you; do you know
when your dog or cat is happy or sad, or when
they are afraid or feel safe? To make these
questions can give an advice in order to know
what your pet wants.etguide Magazine

Pets are important in a number of ways. In
addition to being a living presence, they also
provide a comfort and solace in times of
stress. You can tell your pet your troubles
and they don't talk back or tell others what
you told them.
Pets give children an opportunity to become
more responsible as they are given the task
of looking after a pet - be it a fish, a gerbil, a
cat, a dog, a turtle, or an iguana. Each has to
be cared for, cleaned and fed, talked to and
nurtured. Just as babies die from lack of
contact, so can animals. That is why it is
important to ensure that you have the timeand patience to care for a pet. That you
know what you are getting into.
To The ReaderSection
Sometimes it makes sense to borrow a pet to practice with for a while before you
commit to a purchase. If you are thinking of getting a pet, check out the local animal
shelter and give a home to one of the homeless cats or dogs you find there. But there
is something more about being a responsible pet owner. You don't' want to have more
pets than you can look after, so it is important to take steps to ensure that your dog orcat does not have or create more babies than you can care for.
Yes, it may cost some money to get the pet "fixed," but in the long run the cost is well
worth it. If you've ever seen a dog or a cat who was starved to death, you would
understand how important this is. Bottom line - pets are important. They become a
valuable member of the family, so treat them well, keep them healthy, and you can all
be happy for years to come.

This project helps me to understand that also dogs and
cats have their own special necessities and requirements
about feeding. An inadequate selection of the food pet
should affect them its health. In my own case I had a bad
experience with my dog because he was allergy ill because
the kind of food that I was gives. I had to change by
another brand and formula with lamb and rice and he is
better.
Analyzing the information collected I can understand that
maybe we are not so different to animals, as humans. In
fact, we have a lot of conditions that make us superior in
many factors. So in my humble opinion, I cannot be aware
of animal abuse or neglect. We really appreciate your
support on the new project law related to criminalize the
people behavior whom commits cruel acts in detriment of
an animal, driven by the National Humane Association in
Costa Rica (ANPA).
When my family had a dog, it was an extraordinary
experience because we learned so much from our pet, every
day we learned something about his or her behavior and
attitudes, based on this we knew what it wanted and most
of importantly the things that it had the adaptation ability
to our lifestyle. So, write my own article as a part of this
project, was very interesting because I had the possibility to
read and know different aspects of animals. This magazine
