March 8, 2015 3rd Sunday of Lent / 3° Domingo de Cuaresma Pg. Three/Tres

Food for thought……

Reverence during the Liturgy of the Word and Liturgy of the Eucha-rist allows us to go deeper into our faith. Listening and praying with everyone makes us in solidarity with Jesus and as one body of Christ.

Materia en que pensar…… Ser reverentes durante la Liturgia de la Palabra y la Eucaristía, nos permite profundizar en nuestra fe. Escuchar y orar con los demás nos hace solidarios con Jesús formando un solo cuerpo en Cristo.

THE LENTEN SYMBOLS in our Church

Lenten Reflections

The Church gives us the liturgical season of Lent as a period of renewal. We surrender ourselves to prayer, we sacrifice by giving up food and material wants, and we turn our attention to others by sharing our gifts from God, generously, in service and almsgiving, it is the time to cleanse one’s mind, and heart a time of serf-examination and penance. May the Lenten environment assist us in our Lenten journey. Purple is the color of Lent. Its association with pain an suffering is based upon the passion of Jesus leading up to his crucifixion. “They put a purple robe on him, then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on him” (Mark 15:17) under the weight of sin, we bear our pain, suffering, and journey with him to the cross. Purple is a mixture of red, the color of blood, and blue, the color or heaven. In the bloodshed of the Son of God, heaven is brought low to us. Purple hanging invite us into a spirit of acceptance our own torment and pain. They are the means to a joyful meeting with God. Purple is also the color of royalty and so as we reflect on Jesus’ suffering and death for our sins, we anticipate the resurrection and our hope of transformation into new creatures. Barren branches: In front of the ambo and the vestibule are barren branches. Once green and fruitful, the branches are now specimens of dryness and emptiness. Crooked, rough, and withered, they reach heaven-wards as if in prayer. They remind us of ur own parched lives and the need for self-sacrifice and prayer so that our forgiving Lord may grant us new life. Empty jars: In front of the altar are clay jars used as storage of grain and seeds. They are now devoid of their usual contents. More jars are tipped over unable to provide water to slake one’s thirst. The ab-sence of what makes for basic sustenance is a stark reminder of our total inadequacy before God and our profound need for Him. The emptiness gives us a “silence” that allows us to hear God in our hearts. Rocks and stones: Rocks and stones are a symbol of austerity and rigor. They re-mind us of the desert wilderness where Jesus spent 40 days. The Spirit led him there right after his baptism. Jesus needed the still-ness of the desert and a space to himself to discern God’s will for him. His ministry lay before him and he needed to figure this out. So he prayed and fasted so that he would be more open to God’s word an guidance. Jesus invites us to find our own place of still-ness, an austere place where we can fully direct our hearts to God. Fasting and prayer helps us find this “place” and focus. Jesus was tempted in the desert. “the tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread. Jesus answered, “it is written: ‘Man shall not live of bread alone, but on every word that come form the mouth of God.” (Mt 4:3-4) Jesus, by his answer, made the stones a symbol of over-coming temptation. Rocks: also symbolize the unchangeable and eternal nature of God. God is our rock. We must rest our faith in him.
