    PHARMACEUTICAL PACKAGING

Pharmaceutical packaging is the means of providing protection,

presentation, identification and information, containment, and

convenience to encourage compliance with and closures.

    FDA-

Packaging is the science, art and technology of enclosing or protecting

products for distribution, storage, sale, and use.

An economical means of providing protection, presentation,

identification, information and convenience for pharmaceuticals

product from the moment of production until it is used or

    administered.

    METALS

    Metals used in packaging including

    Tin (15%)

    Aluminum (60%)

    Lead (25%)

These metals are useful in the preparation of collapsibletubes.

    Type of metal containersa.Collapsible tubes

    b. Metal containers for tablets and capsules

    c. Metal foil

    TIN

    Tin:

    ADVANTAGES

Tin is chemically inert of all collapsible tube metals.

It offers a good appearance and compatibility with a widerange of products.

    Aluminum

Aluminum tubes offer significant savings inproduct shipping costs because of their light weight.

    They provide good appearance

    Lead

Lead has the lowest cost of all tube metals and iswidely used for nonfood products such asadhesives, inks, paints, and lubricants.

Lead should never be used alone for anythingtaken internally because of the risk of leadpoisoning.

The inner surface of the lead tubes are coatedand are used for products like fluoridetoothpaste.

COLLAPSIBLE TUBES The collapsible metal tube is an attractive

container that permits controlled amounts to bedispensed easily, with good re closure andadequate environmental protection to the product.

The risk of contamination of the portionremaining in the tube is minimal, because thetube does not "suck back.

It is light in weight and unbreakable, and it lendsitself to high-speed automatic filling operations.

The ductile metals used for collapsible tubes aretin (15%), aluminum (60%), and lead (25%)

    Closures Emphasised On Metals

    Closures-

    METALS

    1.Tin

    2. AluminiumClosures Are Available In 5 Basic Designs

    1) Screw-on Closure

    2) Crimp-on Closure

    3) Roll-on Closure

    4) Friction Closure

    5) Press-on Closure

    Tamper Resistant Packaging

    As per FDA

It is a packaging in which there is an indication or barrier

to entry which if breached or missing, can reasonably

be expected to provide visible evidence to consumer

    that tampering has occurred.

    Advantage of Metals

They are sturdy. They are impermeable to light, moisture, and

    gas.

They are light in weight as compared to glasscontainers.

Labels can be printed directly on to their surface.

    Disadvantage of metals

    They are expensive.

They may shed metal particles intopharmaceutical products.

They are not generally used forextemporaneous dispensing.

They react with certain chemicals of drug.
